insulating radiator cover

I'm looking for suggesting for upping the r-value on top of my radiator. Every window in my apartment has a radiator underneath it. I'd like to have some plants by those windows ('cause y'know, they need light and all) but I'm concerned about heat from below drying & killing the plants. A couple of the radiators have covers, but they're metal, so no insulation there. Ceramic pots may provide some insulation, but I'd really like to lay down a layer of some kind of building insulation proper just to be safe. The question is, what kind? Batting won't work, and the foam insulation panels I've seen at the hardware store I know are a fire hazard... plus not too fond of plastic-type materials. My dad suggested something he called "thermal block" which I believe is aerated concrete panels, but which I can't find a source to purchase. I'd like to spend less than $20, preferably less than $10 on this. Please help!

how do i connect thermo switch with ele. radiator?

First things first notice: Iam in Europe so it's probably a bit different than in USA. I have electric radiator in my room. i bought thermo switch but i don't know how to connect it between the socket and the radiator. I must mention that the radiator had already same thermo switch before but it broke down after 5 years and I didn't write notes how it was connected. I already blown 4 fuses during the attempt. The wire has blue (P?), brown (N?) and yellow/ green (earth) wires. In the switch there's sheme sticker -> www.shrani.si/f/C/Nr/42sKtVVC/thermo.png. notice i have a plug and wire from the radiator both with mentioned wires. I checked blue wire and it's live (P??). Green-yellow wire is earth.. iam sure. so how do i connect the plug and the radiator??

Using peltier to cool my radiator?

I have this idea and wonder if it is possible and feasible. Stick a peltier to my car radiator to generate electricity and store the electrical and then using the same peltier to cool my radiator?

Can convection be used to drive a passive dehumidifier?

Ok, I have a couple of radiators and a greenhouse that is too humid. In winterr can convection drive fluid from a radiator mounted low in the warm greenhouse to a second radiator mounted outside in the cold and then back to create a chilled metal radiator that will have water condense on it and drip into the soil.

How do I wire a temperature sensor to operate a relay switch? What kind of relay do I need?

There's a 2-wire thermostat sensor in my hot water storage tank that I want to signal a relay switch to turn on a circulating pump when it gets hot enough and off when it cools. An in-floor-heating relay might work, as the principle is the same (although reversed), but the temperature range is different. I want my pump to come on when the water in the tank is 50 degrees centigrade, and off when it's 45. Any suggestions?

I plan to build a radiator for a room. I can do the physics i.e. heat transfer etc. My question is really to any heating engineers out there: Are there any design considerations that I need to include so that the new radiator does not upset the existing central heating system (that heats the whole house). Wood Stove feeding radiators

Hi, I'm hear again with a completely different question. Again, any help is greatly appreciated :) I installed a wood stove last year, and I'd like to install a coil to heat water and circulate it through my existing radiator loop. I was wondering if I could do it as in the image, I would install a new pump to circulate the water. I have a combination boiler, but I'm sure that doesn't really matter. The green circles in the diagram are to illustrate taps, that way I can close off the boiler when I have the stove on and vice versa.

Steam radiator made of copper pipe?

I have an old house that uses steam heat and has big, single-pipe, cast-iron steam radiators.  I wanted to replace one of them with something modern looking, and one company sells such radiators, but they are very expensive (sold here http://steamradiators.com/) My question is, can I make one of these  out of large (1.5" or so) diameter copper pipes, soldered together in the same fashion?  I've read that steam systems typically operate at 1psi of pressure, which sounds like it's well below the safety limit of copper pipes and solder joints. I think it would look fantastic, but would it work?

Innovative solar powered radiator - will it work?

Ok, so i live in a rented flat (apartment) in London UK. Its a small flat but its old and doesn't have a gas heating system so i'm stuck using expensive electricity especially as the windows are single glazed and winter is on the way! Brrrrr! I desperately need a cheap and effective heatsource Now I know solar water heaters can be suprisingly effective even in the cold and that got me thinking. I have a south facing garden. Couldn't I use the sun to heat the flat? Specifically, I was thinking, can I use a solar water heater to heat an insulated water tank, then use the tank to heat a radiator after dark? (See diagram below) Bear in mind in temperature during the day at the moment is 11 degrees. Will enough heat be generated to make the system viable? I.e. will the water heat the tank hot enough during the day to keep the room warmish for a evening? Other pressing questions: Do i need a commercial panel or will an instructables model work? Oil filled radiator or water filled? Will it auto-siphon or will i need a pump? cheers a million guys and gals!!!

Heating Control

I have been thinking for some years now that I would like to have finer control over my central heating. The problem Now we are older we feel the cold more so in winter the heating is on all the time. This means that we have to keep altering the thermostat on each radiator at different times of the day or just leave them and so waste energy. One method means wasting energy but the other means rooms will be colder than we want initially.   The system and what i have We have a combination boiler which has a digital timer and also on the panel are temperature controls for hot water and radiator temperature. Each radiator has a thermostatic valve so each room can have it's temperature set independently. I have a computer which runs 24/7 and also a bit whacker which I can control via python code and electronics has been a hobby for over 50 years My idea I would like to have some system which would allow me to adjust each room temperature via computer control.   Possible solutions Solution 1 Fit a stepper motor to each thermostatic valve to adjust it at different times of the day/night. This would allow precise control but would be quite expensive to set up. Solution 2 Fit a small structure round each valve with a filament bulb or resistance wire in the bottom so that when power is applied to it then the temperature around the valve will rise and so the valve will close or, at least partially close. I think this would be much cheaper to implement but would have the small on-going cost of using power to the bulbs whenever the room temperature needs to be cooler that it would normally be. My initial plan Build a small structure around one of the valves with a low voltage bulb in it. It would have vents at top and bottom and so air would circulate. I have a portable digital thermometer so i could gather information and try different bulbs to see how much power would be needed and therefore what the on-going cost would be. Also try various shapes of structure to see what the effect would be.   So guys what do you think?

Watercooling a PC with a central heating radiator?

So I'm completely new to water cooling, I own a closed loop cooler and I know the names of the water cooling parts and assembly, but I have no real experience. I presume it's possible to use a normal radiator as a passive radiator in a loop, but I've got a couple of questions. First, do I have to be worried about what the radiator and waterblocks are made of, are the metals important? Second, will I need a significantly more powerful pump than the standard D5? Thanks! P.S. the rad I had in mind is this http://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-type-11-single-panel-single-convector-radiator-white-300-x-800mm/38602   It's rated for 1505 BTU/hour, which equates to 441W, which is in theory plenty my PC (4670K, HD7850 which I'll probably upgrade in the near future) The reason for using this kind of radiator is because they're far cheaper and passive, although I suppose the increase in pump power may negate quietness of no fans. It's also more fun ;)

How Do You Remove Radiator or Heater Hoses That Are Vucanized (Stuck) to Their Mounting Pipe?

I have a 30+ year old motorhome which has several hoses that I need to remove from engine cooling and heater connections.  They are stuck to the "pipe" they are mounted to and the pipe is fairly fragile brass.  I can certainly try to cut them off but I don't want to scratch or damage the pipes.  It would even be nice to just be able to remove and reuse the hoses but I can't see how that is possible. How can I heat my unheated basement using the existing hotwater pipes but without altering the hot water system? Answered

My basement is freezing as it doesn't have a radiator. Its does however, have two 3m hot water pipes from the central heating system above running accross the ceiling. How can I use the heat from these without altering the hot water system? I was considering encasing them in ducting and using a 12v fan to blow cool air in one end and warm air out of the other. Thoughts? Would painting them with a specific paint help? I need ideas. I'm FREEZING! :D

What can be inside of this (Attachment) ? It should be a device you put under your bed to neutralize health effects of Hartman and Curry grids - Earth radiation. I am guessing a simple coil, but what is happening if you connect it to the power outlet's ground? What do you think about it? Is this bogus device, and would there be a way to neutralize those radiations? (I do not have this thing, I just want to prevent my father from wasting $50... by the way there are no possible returns)

CFL's putting out too much UV radiation?

Our local (I think) news service has done a story about CFL's emitting too much UV radiation, You can view it here.Would you rather sit under an incandescent light or a CFL for a extended period of time?Do you think they should have warning labels on them?Do you have any other opinions on CFL's and energy saving globes?Or do you think this is all just a way to get more people to but the old incandescent bulbs?

Best way to solder thin copper heat fins to soft copper pipe for radiator/heat exchanger with small butane blow torch?

Trying to attach 36cm (14") x 5cm(2") x 0.125mm(0.005") thick electrolytic copper heat-fins to 20 hollow soft copper tubes 6mm outer diameter, 0.4mm thick walled copper pipes. Would ideally like to use silver based solder rather than tin-based. Is it realistic to use high-silver-content solder on such thin copper, and with a small butane blowtorch (has to be small as fins only 1cm apart)? Can I use silver solder or do I need to use tin solder? Any help/suggestions welcome!

Using Neutron radiation from Aluminum foil is this Legal to do?

I am wondering if I expose plants to Neutron radiation and carefully burn them afterwords.at 500 deg C is this safe and more importantly is it Legal?? I plan to use a 4% thorium Rod (Welding Rod). What about Beta and gamma radiation is this Legal. I heard on youtube it is as long as you Properly dispose of the seeds.  I did a similar Project with clover a few cm away from a total of 20,000 volts 35 mA power supply and dosages above 400 volts per meter squared killed the clover plants very quickly. I sterilized the soil and seeds with bleach and incinerate it with High heat 500-600 degrees C. I washed by draining most of the bleach out of the seeds.

Thermal Electric generation using peltier modules and a household plumbed radiator?

My idea was being energy conscious of some how incorporating thermal heat from the heating system of my house to power LED Lights in the rooms where there is radiators. I need to find a way to incorporate a make shift kit using peltier modules heat from the radiators and a natural way to cool in a bid to reduce the electric during the winter months. Advice is welcomed and opinions also taken onboard as regards to its productivity and if it will be able to do its designed task. Thanks.

How To Repair A Car Radiator Leak In The Plastic Area? ? ? ? ?

I have a radiator leak that I want to repair instead of replacing the whole radiator. I tried a couple of 2 parts epoxy glues and it won't hold for long. I think the heat just makes it weak. They are small leaks(2) on top of the plastic area. I was thinking maybe trying some fiberglass resin and cloth since I have some leftover from my fibeglass speaker box I've done a while back but not sure if I should go that way. Anyone knows of another way? Anyone had this problem and got a fix? or if there's a website where I can get the top piece to replace it myself please post a link. It's a 2000 dodge neon. Thanks.

Use car radiators for solar collectors. Any advice?

I have salvaged 2 car radiators, they aren't leaky. I want to use them for active closed loop solar collectors. Any advice? My current plan is to put them on the roof (in a hot box), then plumb them into an old water heater in the attic. My hope is they can recirculate glycol in a closed loop, convection only, but I may need to install a thermostat and pump. Anyone have experience in this? I want to dump the heat to my 2 water heaters in the basement (they are plumbed in tandem, so I can use the 1st tank for solar boost and 2nd tank for final temperature control). Heat exchangers: either the Butler Solar Wand, or Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger (single or parallel). Differential Temperature Controller from www.jc-solarhomes.com. Rapid decompression cooling? Answered

Is a possible way to super cool a gas (nitrogen or oxygen) to liquid temperatures by using a sub-zero tank of 5000 psi compressed air to blast that gas over a radiator and therefore cool the gas in the radiator to a liquid, then quickly pump it to a chilled high pressure insulated tank.

How to make a home made air cooler?

I want to cool the air inside the cabin of a my boat but I don't have room to install even the smallest of air conditioners.  I would like to build something like a swamp cooler (Evaporative Cooler) but without the evaporative part.   I don't want to blow additional humidity around in the cabin.  I can use a pump to get a never ending supply of cold lake water.  I'm wondering if putting a fan in front of a radiator cooled with lake water will give me any sort of a reasonable deltaT on the air flowing through it?  Basically using a radiator in reverse.  Anyone have any thoughts on if this works? what kind of radiator to use?  and if I can get any reasonable temp drop on the air going through the radiator?

I am afraid to use the microwave oven much because overusing it can possibly cause health problems in the future because of the radiation that emits into the food.  So I mainly use toaster ovens. should i be concerned, any experts in this field?  thank you.

"Radiation," the invisible energy given off by radioactive materials, can be either "subatomic" particles or electromagnetic. The most common particles emitted are "beta rays," high-energy electrons, and "alpha particles," helium nuclei. Some sources can emit neutrons, protons, or "positive beta rays" (anti-electrons, or positrons), but those are much less common.The units we use to measure radioactivity are becquerels (Bq, decays per second) or curies (Ci, 3.7 x 1010 decays per second).
