Water Bottle Raft

Finished Project - https://www.instructables.com/id/Project_rRaft_Building_a_Raft_out_of_Water_Bottl/After thinking about Reishee and his island, I asked my mom if I could build an island from water bottles...the idea was rejected. I asked my mom if I could build a raft, and she said sure...so i've started collecting water bottles. Not only does the final result get me excited, but people's responses do as well. Of course there are those who think i'm crazy (as there are with any of my schemes), but there are so many more who just love the idea, and get enthralled in it. A friend in crew is going to empty the boat house recycling bin for me, a teacher told me that the recycling bin in the teacher work room is over flowing, many more offer to collect water bottles from their families, and bring in the 20+ bottles from their cars. I bring a bag to school to collect them, and collect bottles from people...just being a part of this great recycling project (I want it to be 98% recycled) excites people, so when they see one person donate a bottle, others will hurry to finish their water and donate it to the cause as well. The whole thing has just opened my eyes to how many bottles are thrown out, instead of being recycled...it's amazing. Just because people will probably be asking, this is my plan:Two large water bottle pontoons will be on either sideA wooden frame/deck will be clipped onto the pontoons via eye bolts and carabinersHomemade oarsThat's the basics...I hope to have some luxuries too:Big ole water tight cooler bolted onto the back for storageTwo stadium seats bolted onto the deck to sit onTo keep up with the raft, visit rraft.blogspot.com

Amazing Family of DIY Pirates Cross Atlantic Ocean in Raft Made from Garbage!

This is actually old news at this point, but it's so awesome that I think it deserves some attention on Instructables. A unique family called the Neutrinos built a raft from garbage and scraps found on the streets of New York City, perfected their design during numerous trips along the coast, and then during the summer of 1998 spent 60 days floating it across the Atlantic in 20ft seas while fending off swirling currents and heart attacks!Needless to say, the story warranted some further investigation, upon which I learned that these empowered adventurers have built many rafts over the past 20 years. The children of the family were born in Mexico and raised in the circus. The more I read about their story, the more interested and excited I become.Check out the details at their extensive website - The Floating Neutrinos where they write about the other rafts they have built, brain reprogramming, and about their newest project: The Vilma B, a floating 128' orphanage housing up to 25 children!National Geographic TV featured their home-made a movie about their journey across the Atlantic, and a new movie about the family is on the way. Watch the trailer here.If you don't have time to dig through the entire site, you can check out the condensed summary of it all at http://www.paulsorganic.com/most-fascinating.htmIf anyone knows more about these people please reply - I can't stop reading about their adventures and getting exciting about floating somewhere myself!

Jedi Training Center

I live on a lake and want to put in some fun stuff for fun and training.  Free stuff is a plus...budget is $50 or so.  Must be able to take out of the water in the fall. First idea I had was to anchor some of those (closed) blue 50 gallon barrels so that people could try and stand on them and fight each other.  I haven't tested this out yet...they may be just too unstable.  I also have to figure out how to tie and anchor them to a cinder block on the bottom of the lake so they can just stay there and float.  Any ideas? Other things....log rolling....diy diving board....let your imagination go.  i haven't found any pics or sites on the internet on this topic, so any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

I would like to make an assault boat like what the SEAL's use but I'm on a tight budget... duct tape? ... any ideas? Answered

My title kind of explains it but I would like to make an Assault Raft like what the SEAL's use. To buy one runs about 200 grand... ridiculous if you ask me but that's the way it is... I have been thinking of using duct tape and PVC, kinda following the Myth Busters template. Awesome episode I just saw! Anyways, if anyone in the Vancouver, WA area who would like to help is welcome to... other than that I could just use some help on the brainstorming. THANKS!

CAD

Hi ppl, Recently I decided to design my own raft this year for the Guildford raft race. The raft will use pvc piping for floatation and my (and an unsuspecting friend) will sit on two bicycles which will power two paddle wheels. Anyway, long story short i thought it would be a cool idea to model it up in some sort of CAD (maybe as something to send possible sponsors to show what i am going to attempt to do if they give me a load of pvc hehe), and, was wondering what software is best to use? thanks ppl

fun question # 2!

Ok so i decided to start another one because i felt like it this one might be gross to some people. ok would you rather starve to death on a island or eat your own foot? you can have a knife some ketchup and mustard and thats it. and you get to magically get to heal your foot with ancient worships. after you eat your foot you explore and find a dead elephant and feast on it for a year then you make a small raft made of leaves and now tell me what you would do with the raft? (after you tell me if you would eat your foot or not.

The duct tape challenge, says you could win a roll of duct tape, but when you click on the "duct tape" link it takes you to Duck tape.. What do you do with it, kidnap ducks? tape several ducks together to make some sort of raft? or is it like fly tape, hang it from the ceiling to get rid of ducks in the kitchen? Or is it for repairing broken or leaking ducks? If you win what will you do with your duck tape?

Banned Books Week! 9/29 - 10/6!

Did you guys even know this existed? Are you doing anything for it?Quite nerdy of me, I know, but my store has a neat display going on right now and I wanted to share. And it's good to spread the word about events like these, I think! :DSo my friend Seth and I decided to go with Alcatraz... but with books. I think it turned out fairly well considering we tried to use materials we had lying around the store. The whole thing cost less than $20. We wanted to have "Where's Waldo?" escaping on the raft but the book is much too big, so I thought LotF was fitting. :)Oh, and for more information about banned and challenged books, visit these sites!deletecensorship.org - Half Price Books websiteALA website - lots of nice lists and explanations!

1.5 Litre Waterbottles, Lots of them.. what can I do with them!

Hi there! I live in an area that I've got to buy bottled water because the water here isnt so good. So every week I go through like 12 bottles of water. We have recycling, but going down to the recycling bin every couple days is annoying. So I figured that there must be something I can do with them. I can do planting and such, so I'm looking into that. But in reality I cant plant 300 different plants! So what sort of things do you think I could do with all these bottles?UpdateThanks for the comments guys (gals)! Some of these ideas are really really good! I just either (a) lack the lake/body of water to build the rafts (b) have no desire to launch myself into the air (c) or live where it doesn't rain....Either way, I love these ideas. I thought this topic got buried! THANKS!!

Best solution to problem - powering a 15 meters LED strip and 60W LED worklights outdoors?

Hi everyone!I am a new one to the world of the LED lights. However, I have an oncoming project with LED strips. There will be 3 separate runs of a LED strip (4 meters, 4 meters and 6 meters each). In each run LED strip will be put in 1 meter long LED strip profile. I am planning to connect the runs in parallel. The strip will be RGBW with RGBW controller (all the stuff I am planning to use is provided at the end). So, the question is: Is it possible to power all the setup with car 12V battery and what else do I need for that as the project will be on a motorized raft outdoors? What is the possible wiring diagram for the best result? Do I need any led strip power amplifier? I also have planned to use two 60W LED worklights at the same place? How can I power them?LED strip:https://goo.gl/vp8LX9LED strip controller:https://goo.gl/ipRKv4

DIY Waterprrof Iphone case.

Hello, I have an iPhone 5s and want to make a durable waterproof case for that, specifically for white water rafting. So I have an outline plan and want your inputs if I am doing something wrong or if you have a better suggestion. 1) Get a plastic box in which iphone cases come (some thing like this but which is strong http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v3/1574895035_1/iphone_5s_case_hard_plastic_box.jpg) 2) Get a rubber seal and fit it exactly for the size.     http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/AlwAAOxyOalTYCK2/$_35.JPG 3) Make a wrist strap with some elastic and make a holder for iphone with it.       This holder is needed to keep the phone in place on hand and when I want to take the pic I can easily get it off, shoot and put it back. 4) Fish wire.      This will be used to connect the actual phone case and wrist strap so if I drop the phone it still remains with me or use a retractable cable to make it more professional. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZbiJQuOsL._SX466_.jpg So far this is my idea, what do you guys think about it ?

Great Adventures

Does anyone remember the old Great Adventures sets? I collected almost all of them for my kids when they were younger. We had the castle complete with all of the Knights, the King, the invading King, the bad knights, the wizard, the small dragon, the large dragon, the "Special" knights, the boulder launching cannon etc. We also invested in the western town set. We had the sheriff, the deputy, the jailer, assorted bandits, the bucking bull, etc. Another set was the pirate ship. We collected the large ship, the small ship, all of the captains, sea serpent, pirate island, shark raft, the iron whale, and over two-dozen pirates! We had a ball playing with these things. Me and the boys spending good quality time together. Then we had a small problem. i was transferred for work and the boys thought they had to leave everything behind (including the great adventures sets they loved!) They never told us though. We thought that they were just having issues with the move in general. We followed some tips from a buyers agent website (mainly the one entitle Communication) and figured out that they were worried about leaving behind everything. We quickly fixed the misunderstanding and resumed a peaceful move.

My name is Kiteman, and I'm an addict... needing a fix!

Some time ago, Lost started on British TV. I'd heard it was good, but I missed the pilot. I also heard that, if you missed the pilot, nothing else made sense.  So, I avoided watching the series, figuring I'd catch the repeats. ...and suddenly they're on season five, and I haven't seen any of them! So, I bought season one on DVD.  Seven discs, twenty-five episodes and a bunch of extras. I picked it up on Saturday, and despite spending a day in school, and a day visiting a friend and her new baby (awww.....), and managing to hunt down my first Mediterranean Gull, I've just watched episode 13 17. Please, no spoilers, I just wanted to say... Whoa! UPDATE: All done.  Twenty-five episodes, and the extras (except the commentaries - I don't like commentaries). We never got to see the Big Scary Monster (although it sounded distinctly mechanical by the end), we never found out where Ethan came from, nor the polar bears. What about the four on the raft?  Last we saw it was still burning, and little Walt! So, I'm now haunting ebay for Season Two - we need to find what's down that ladder....

Why does my printer add defects to my prints (nothing to do with slicer)? Answered

So I have a FDM 3D printer which I designed and built, it is very sturdy so I am sure that none of this is caused by flexing/resonances of the printer. My set up makes use of Repetier host and firmware, with cura being my preferred slicer. I have noticed that it has started to add strange details to my prints, both on corners and on rounded sides (see photos). These do not show up on the  slicer preview, and when i switch between slicers (cura and slic3r) they still remain. This has led me to believe that it may be a issue on the printer side. I have watched the printer as it prints and they are definitely being added on purpose by the machine (as in no flexing/resonance/lack of tension in the belts). this made me think it might be a firmware issue. It also does not go away if I slow down the printer. This has only happened recently, but  I can find no settings on the firmware that I have changed in this time period that would indicate something like this should happen. Just to be clear, in the photos, the near circular print should be perfectly circular, and the other print should have a perfectly square cross section. It also happens on both the models and the rafts/brims that I use. Any thoughts or ideas will be much appreciated.

Bio-mechanical electricity - 13W per knee.

A stroll around the park may soon be enough to charge the raft of batteries needed in today's power-hungry gadgets.US and Canadian scientists have built a novel device that effortlessly harvests energy from human movements. The adapted knee brace, outlined in the journal Science, can generate enough energy to power a mobile phone for 30 minutes from one minute of walking.A slow walk can generate an average of 5W of electricity, but they have models that will produce 13W - enough power for a one-minute stroll to provide half an hour of talk-time.The prototype makes you sound like an extra in Terminator, but the inventors are predicting saleable products within 18 months, probably powering (in the first instance) modern prosthetic limbs.Soldiers may also benefit from wearing the knee brace to power the multitude of devices they now carry ,such as night vision goggles and GPS."They treat batteries like they treat food and water - they are so essential to what they do," he said.Link to BBC articleLink to BBC VideoLink to Science Magazine articleThis whole idea seems like a "Good Thing" to me - even without the computer-control, I don't see why a pedestrian or jogger couldn't wear a pair of generators similar to those in wind-up torches, charging phone and PDA as you stroll around doing the shopping or jogging across the park. Get them with a Nike or Motorola logo, and we'd see hundreds of people wearing batman-style utility belts, stacked with all the gadgets the modern human "needs". It could really help wearable computing take off as well.

Anyone ever read this book? "Boys Handy Guide" (?)

I used to have a book, from about the 1920's, which I believe was called something like "The Handy Book for Boys" or "The Boys handy Guide" or something similar. It was a HUGE book, with illustrations, on how a boy could make just about anything - from building a raft, or a rowboat or a sailboat, to making root beer, fireworks, forts, aquariums, aviaries, traps, bows and arrows, games to play, how to whittle - it was a most amazing book, and of course, I lost my copy. So when this new book came out: "The Dangerous Book for Boys", everyone & myself included, got all excited about it, but it seems to be a pale imitation of what I used to have. the one thing I do remember about that old book, was it made a lot of assumptions about being able to easily acquire things that I would have no idea how to go about today - chemicals and glazier's leading and such, but I sure wish I could find another copy of that book. I bet it would be a great resource for creating new instructables or getting ideas - anyone else out there know about this book, or where to get myself another one? It seems like perfect reading material for this website! Some other things I remember; I remember the book being red, and being printed in England - it made a lot of references to the United States and had a very "English" writing style and wording. Ah-Hah! thank you Tool Using Animal - your perseverance has paid off for me. If anyone is at all interested in these books - look at the links in the comments below for a Project Gutenberg copy of the Boy Mechanic and a PDF version of The American Boys Handy Book from Google - both great resources for How-To's for all ages. Especially check out the illustrations for the boy-sized glider inside the Boy mechanic book - can you imagine allowing a kid to do something like that nowadays? Think of the lawsuits!!! :-)

Zombies, and what are your plans and ideas for killing them?

Plans? Ideas? Instructables? Bullets, ammo, makeshift guns, what are your plans? Hygiene, Food, escape routes? Can you suggest guns (THAT YOU HAVE USED!!!)? Here are my plans... Im saving money for a Walther P22, possibly buy a silencer, (They are illegal to use in my state, I belive not to own one.) I will be stock piling ammo for a 20 gauge scattergun, .357 rounds, .38 special rounds, .22 rifle rounds, plan on buying a cheap .223 rifle for picking them off. Also buying sights and scopes for a 20 gauge shotgun, a .22 long rifle, and a .357 magnum. Whenever my brother or parents drive me around places, I look for friends houses, some who have guns, Ideas to signal that im human, geographically and easily defendable homes and areas. I look for random scrap wood and metal, and I try to find out who will be able to take the stress. I try to meet people in my area. Still in the process of stock piling water, and getting those canned peaches I love so much. Im saving wood pieces, trying to find heavy sheet metal, just as gadget-evilusions said. I have actually begun to devise gadgets, weapons, landmines, makeshift munitions, ammunition, and other anti-zombie things. Plans on quick-welding lawnmowers to the front of a car, 2x4 plus nai equals effective weapons, chemical warfare angainst the Brooks zombie, and others. One of my main projects is printing and laminating topographical maps from google maps and applying section numbers to them. I have told my friends when the day comes, Ill be knocking on your door to save your butt. Im planning escaoe routes, and am in the process of building a two person raft. Pyrotechnics for signaling and otherwise are in effect. Everyone, get ready for Z-Day, and please, tip the chef! (Beacause, you know, chefs have big knives...) ~RoAr

Did you miss me?

You may have noticed that I mysteriously stopped posting for a couple of days. I've been camping! I came on as a last-minute substitute when another leader was unexpectedly hospitalised, and whizzed off to Gilwell 24 with a small group of our Explorer Scouts. It's an awesome event for teenage scouts - from 09:00 Saturday, to 09:00 Sunday, 24 hours of non-stop activities without the requirement of sleep.  Four thousand Explorer Scouts took up the challenge, and almost all of them managed a full 24 hours of extreme Scouting. 3G Swing Archery Bushcraft Zone Bouldering Campfire Climbing (Outdoor rock and revolving wall) Craft zone Crate stacking Disco Fairground Flying Trapeze Geocaching Giant games Gilwell gauntlet Global Zone - including Shelterbox High ropes course Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting Mountain boarding Orienteering Outdoor arena Quad Bikes Outdoor Woodland Quaser Raft Racing / Boat Racing Rifle Shooting Competition Scavenger hunt Scuba Diving Slacklining Speed climbing Segways Simulators Technology zone Water rockets Assault Course Car driving Go Karts Power Boking Inflatables Fire Building Fishing Military Activity Team Speed Stacking Caving Zorbing As well crafts and other activities going on all the time (I had my first go at wood-turning at 14:00, and was soldering together an AM band radio at 22:30 (goodness me, the writing on a capacitor gets small later at night!)). Add to that a month's rain in about 20 hours, giving liquid mud on the scale of Glastonbury, it's hardly a surprise that every single Explorer fell asleep on the train home. Because my standing-in was very short notice, none of my electronics were properly charged, but I did get a few snaps of the atmosphere before my iPod completely died. I have never been so wet or so dirty on a camping trip, and I was taking it easy - it's the first time I've been forced to pack my tent away wet and muddy at the end of a camp. If you're a Scout or an Explorer, and will be over 13½ next July, why not take up the challenge yourself? If you fancy taking part, offering an activity, or otherwise getting involved in next year's event, they are already taking comments and ideas.  If you're not in Scouting, and didn't realise it was so awesome (or that girls are allowed at any age), then why not think about joining? (As an aside, I'd never seen Rock-It-Ball being played before.  Looks fun.)
