Raspberry Pi

Hello everyone I wanted some suggestions from the users of raspberry pi on where to start after getting the raspberry pi. I've searched the web and found a lot of things, but they weren't exactly beginners friendly. I am upgrading from an Arduino to a Raspberry pi and the difference between them is enormous. Arduino seemed a lot more welcoming and easier compared to Raspberry pi. So do you guys have some tips or places to start from for me? Any help is appreciated. Thank You

Raspberry Pi Composite?

I have built the Ben Heck portable Raspberry Pi.  I had it working, but then I bumped the case and after that, the video will not start up.  My wiring to the monitor is all still good, and I know that it is getting power.  The only thing is, that during the bump, the video data and ground cables may have shorted.  Could this have caused the problem?  Whether it did or not, can anybody please help me fix it?

Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

Well I am a 16 year old High School student interested in engineering and things of that sort. I recently took an engineering class at my school and was thoroughly pleased with the concepts. My father is also an engineer, and would like me to dive deeper into these sorts of things. Being a long time Instructables  user I came here to seek guidance. Most of the Instructables of recent times have used Arduino and/or Raspberry Pi. I would like to learn more about these tools and what they are used for. Which one do you think is better, easier to use, and/or faster to learn.

Raspberry pi and MHL

Can you control a raspberry pi through MHL. My aftermarket radio supports MHL to control android phones and display the screen as well all from the USB and the cable. So, I was wondering if the raspberry pi could be controlled the same way. I've though of installing a USB touch screen overlay on top of the radio to control the raspberry pi that way and provide video with rca converters or just the rca 3.5 jack on the raspberry pi. Any clues or advice?

Raspberry PI power?

Hey yall! I just recently bought a Raspberry Pi! Those of you who want to order know how hard this is, so Im pretty excited because i didnt think Id b able to order for awhile. Anywho, I wnat to make or buy a portable power supply for it, but I am not sure how to go about doing that. I know there are tons of portable CHARGERS out there for iphones and what not, but I am afriad these will attempt to "charge" my PI, therfore frying the board. Do they just supply power and the device recognizes power being recieved, so it displays charging? And I will be attachin a BUNCH of things via a usb hub to the Pi, so I doubt regular bunch of 4 rechargeable AAs will pwer my device for long with all thse extrra things drawing power. So my question is 3fold: can I buy one of those portable chargers to power my Pi or will it fry it? will 4 AAs be enough to power the Pi and all the extra usb things? and will it be more cost efficient to make a power supply? (I definetely want it be rechargeable, though). Any links to products, or guides to make one would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance!!! Also, I already have a wall supply, but I need a power supply that is portable.

Is this possible with the Raspberry Pi?

So I have recently purchased a Raspberry Pi and I finally go the time to mess around with it a little bit.  So far i have only installed the NOOBS software and have downloaded the recommended Raspian operating system, and have been using it as a desktop computer.  That is all I have done so far.  So I have an idea of something i want to create with the Pi.  I also have the camera module for the Pi and I'd like to put it to use.  I would like to have the Pi, with the camera module attached and operating, in one location, with a monitor of some sort, possibly a cell phone or just a display i would purchase, and have the camera wirelessly send the video feed to the monitor.  I'm assuming this is possible because i have seen instructables on here where people use the Pi to make security cameras. My idea is similar, just none of the ibles i found quite hit the idea on the head.  So, i guess i'm looking for someone to tell me if this is possible, and point me in the direction of how to go about doing this, or if there are any ibles on here that are exactly this that I have missed. Thanks

Raspberry Pi sensing audio?

Hi all -- I have been programming all kinds of things all my life, but I have never had a chance to build a program that responds to audio input.  Suddenly: Dancing Baby Groot.  I have a great idea for an algorithm for making a very clever and funky Dancing Baby Groot using Raspberry Pi or Arduino -- if I can figure out how to get the processor to "listen" to audio input. How would I get one of those processors (or any processor) to "listen" to the mic and translate it into either digital or analog data which one could then plunder to figure out the tempo and beat in order to get Baby Groot to Dance?  I am 100% sure I can do the plundering (because it works on digital files) if I can get the processor to "listen" to the mic and create a file of numbers which represent the music being played. Any suggestions?

temperature logging with raspberry pi

New here, and to Pi/Python looking to log data from a few different sensors from Atlas Scientific (RTD & PH).  I've gotten really stuck so fare in getting these going and was wondering if anyone here can help me out.  so far I've used this code:  import smbus import time import datetime #SMBus(0) - Raspberry Pi Model A #SMBus(1) - Raspberry Pi Model B bus = smbus.SMBus(1) #I2C address of sensor address = 0x66 def temperature():     rvalue0 = bus.read_word_data(address,0)     rvalue1 = (rvalue0 & 0xff00) >> 8     rvalue2 = rvalue0 & 0x00ff     rvalue = (((rvalue2 * 256) + rvalue1) >> 4 ) *.0625     #print rvalue1, rvalue2     return rvalue print("Temperature Data Logger\n") while True:         #Open Log File     f=open('tempdata.txt','a')     now =     timestamp = now.strftime("%Y/%m/%d %H:%M")     outvalue = temperature()     outstring = str(timestamp)+"  "+str(outvalue)+" C "+str(outvalue*1.8+32)+" F"+"\n"     print outstring     f.write(outstring)     f.close()     #log temperature every 10 seconds     time.sleep(10) I've got the two sensor boards connected to the raspberry pi 3 mounted via a Whitebox Tentacle T3.   The boards are in i2c mode and i can see them using sudo i2cdetect -y 1 (they show up address 63 and 66)  but when i run this program above I just get a red error light when it reads the temperature.   The log file reports a measurement of 2C and 35.2F which is not correct but the red light on the board tells me that the Pi is trying to connect with it.   Anyone able to help?

Raspberry Pi PC temp checker

Hello forum, I'm planning on buying a raspberry Pi this week. I know a couple programming languages, but only the basics. I've had this idea for quite a while: Connect multiple thermal sensors to the Pi, and then connect the Pi to my old Android cellphone (Nexus 2), and mount the phone to my PC case, so I get read outs for the PC components (CPU, VGA, PSU, HDD, and so on). Can someone help me, and explain how I can do this? I see it as a fun hobby to get into programming, and also reuse a cell phone, so I don't throw it away.

Motion stream crashing [Raspberry Pi]

Recently, I've been toying around with a USB webcam and a little addon called "Motion" on my rasberry pi 2. My goal was to make and dd treating webcam. I successfully done this, but not without encountering a major issue. When I connect to my stream, it works for a few seconds, then motion crashes. I can tell because the little light on the webcam goes out. Why on earth is it doing that?

Raspberry Pi Zero Dedicated Console

I have written a small 15 Puzzle game in Java—the only programming language I am fully comfortable with. I’m satisfied with the game itself and would like it to have a simple platform on which to play it rather than it just being a .jar on my computer. I would like to make a small handheld with raspberry pi zero just to run the game on boot and let that be that. I plan to use a usb encoder to map the buttons, so I don’t have to worry about programming the gpios with Java (as I have found this to be a bit of a hassle). I would love any ideas or assistance regarding the best way to play the Java program on boot and maybe a way to effectively shut down the handheld without potentially corrupting my microsd. Any other neat ideas or tips for the project are also, of course, quite welcome. Thank you!

Raspberry pi 2 processing capability?

Hearing the announcement of the new latest and greatest Raspberry Pi 2, now a backwards compatible computer with a 0.9GHz ARM Cortex-A7 quad core processor and 1GB of LPDDR2 SDRAM, I was wondering of the feasibility of using it as a very cheap and basic solution for a simple computer for my lab. Currently, I am using a compaq presario C700 Pentium Dual-Core laptop, that has been maxed out with 2GB 800MHz kingston RAM, and is running Kubuntu. I should also not the HDD has been replaced with a 120GB one from an old and broken Xbox. I do not like it much anymore, because although the performance of it is acceptable, the screen is a bit low res, at 1280x800, it's pretty dark (or at least until it 'warms up' to full brightness), it had a major scratch on the screen, (no idea how it got there) and after buffing it out with many methods, including with an eraser, the area has became discolored, like a portion of the screen has higher gamut and brightness, and lower black levels. :( Oh well. The main killer for it is that it's form factor. It is too big, heavy, the screen is too small, and it is very cumbersome to use far away in the corner of my workbench. Of course being a laptop, the 'base' of it is fixed to the screen, and to move it closer to me takes away lots of valuable space on my really messy bench. I mostly use it to research part numbers, get schematics off of google, watch YT videos, log data from serial ports (including my UNI-T multimeter with basic data-logging capabilities), and stuff like that. I may have as many as 20 tabs open at a time, which did tax my old compaq C700 when it had 1GB of RAM, but that was likely due to a memory leak issue with chrome, since I have the SAME issue with my main desktop, with 8GB of DDR3 RAM. If the video by MAKE is anything to judge, it looks just as powerful, as this embedded video is large! My hope is to replace it with a raspberry pi, and be able to use it for these basic operations w/ a old LCD monitor which can be picked up off of craigslist for cheap. Maybe I can even find one in the dump :P. Maybe I can configure the GPIO pins to be COM and parallel ports, w/ clock, Tx, Rx, and everything else! That way an external FTDI chip and using the limited number of USBs is not an issue. Is that possible?

Switch on EL wire with Raspberry Pi

I have bought a small 3 m length of EL wire along with a portable 3v controller like this one: there is a tactile push button which cycles through the operating modes (on, flash, off etc) id like to be able to turn the EL wire on using my raspberry pi.  I have opened the controller and soldered 2 wires over the push button contacts such that when you touch these wires together, it has the same effect as pushing the button. thats as far as I have got.  Has anyone got any idea on how to us the raspberry pi GPIO to switch this on?  Transistors are a bit foreign to me, especially ratings and required resistors!

Thoughts on Arduino/Raspberry Pi Idea?

Hi everyone, I am part of a research group at UC Berkeley working on a product involving the Arduino/Raspberry Pi. We are conducting market tests, and would really appreciate your help answering these questions. Thank you for your time! If you use Arduino/Raspberry Pi, how often do you use it? How do you use it? Would you consider it mostly a hobby or do you use it for school/industry as well? How were you first introduced to it? What are your general thoughts on the Arduino/Raspberry Pi? Did you learn to program by using the Arduino/Raspberry Pi or did you have some prior experience? If you had prior experience, how much? What languages are you well-versed in? Would you be interested in a model-based approach to programming Arduino/Raspberry Pi functions? This would be something akin to Matlab’s Simulink or Labview’s visual programming (flowcharts). The basic idea would be to remove the need to code in C. If you are not interested, why not? If you are interested, what specific features would you enjoy? Do you believe such a tool would be an efficient way to teach/introduce students to programming? In addition, here is a 1-minute survey (on a similar subject) if you are interested: Survey:
