RE: A Bug!

There is a bug on this page. I cannot use "enter" to go downward in lines. I tried. First, the site's page, https://www.instructables.com/id/Beer-Bottle-Lock/, has a bad download link in IE for the looking.stl file. I had to use Google Chrome to download the looking.stl file. The keep.stl file works on IE, though.

Re-purposing a refrigerator

I am re-purposing a refrigerator to make an egg incubator. What crossed my mind was that perhaps rather than using another source to heat it, perhaps the chiller system (which is fully intact and working) could be reversed? Has anyone on here undertaken a project which involved deliberately causing a refrigerator to work in reverse and so heat up inside? Any information would be gratefully received.

Polygraph re-purpose?

Okay, here was my idea: an old polygraph is basically an amplifier connected to a pen graph. pen graphs and amplifiers were used on the old oscillographs. Those were replaced with oscilloscopes, where the amplifier connects to the deflection coils on a CRT (or into an AD converter, then yadda yadda yadda.) My thought was, because people with old polygraphs in my experience want to dump them, while people with an oscilloscope of the same capabilities want a premium for them. One guy near where I live has an uncle who collected stuff, and he has an old Heathkit oscilloscope he'd like $75 for. Square tube, relatively massive body, very, very low bandwidth. He also wants about $50 for the old tube base done, with the round CRT display. And it won't show a trace when powered up. But he has a somewhat dinged up polygraph with chart recorder that is for about $10. Could I, perhaps with some modifications, turn that polygraph into what works as a low-bandwidth oscilloscope/oscillograph? The old tube based one would be of collection interest only, and being old and Heathkit, I doubt their accuracy. Is there any way the old polygraph could be turned into the world's least practical oscilloscope?

Question Re: Installation

I have a few questions regarding a scultpure I am making- To keep it simple, let's say the sculpture is simply a rectangle, ~4'x8'. What I would like to do is set up eight motion sensors (one in each corner and one in the middle of each side) that when triggered activate a corresponding tape player with a tape loop inside to play on a central speaker unit. So the goal is simplest terms is for people to walk around the installation triggering a musical note and with enough people organize a composition or a chord. Each motion sensor would have its own respective tape player, but I don't have the funds to supply eight seperate speakers. I also don't have much money to spend on PIRs, however, ebay has a bunch of PIR home security sensors for around $5. This project is most likely going to be crude, so I'm not overly worried about how sloppy it may turn out. What I imagine is to have the tape players always on, always running their loops, and a way for their respective sensors to allow the sound to play through the speaker. The gaps I need filled- 1) Is it sensible to use the PIR sensors I'm finding on ebay? (Aleph XP-40, Ademco 998) 2)short of buying eight speakers, is there a way to hook up all eight tape players to a central speaker unit? 3) If I am making this overly complicated, might you know of a better way to accomplish the task?

"Re-inventing The Wheel"

Say hello to Mr.T.  He is old, simple, and there is really nothing special about him.  However, Mr.T is a sneaky little feller.  He likes putting on clever disguises like iron sights and stocks and even removable magazines to make people think that he is special.  But he isn't.  He's been around for years now, and for some reason, can't accept that his time is done.  As a community, we are going to get rid of Mr.T. I hope you found that funny, but more importantly, I hope that you took it seriously.  No, I am not talking about the guy who played Clubber Lang in the third rocky.  I am talking about the K'nex gun that has been built and posted thousands of times, and makes the rest of the Instructables community hate K'nex gun builders.  At this point, pretty much any search done on this site will result in at least one K'nex gun.  What is worse?  They are all the same.  The "T" format is the most simple, most redundant approach to building a K'nex aside from the now heavily discriminated block trigger guns.  They involve three things: 1.  A vertical magazine 2.  A firing ram 3.  A trigger Any gun that requires only these three components to operate is, in my opinion, pointless.  Despite cosmetic features such as stocks and iron sights, all "T" format guns are exactly the same.  Yes, they do work, and some of them even work very well, but at this point, improvement will only occur with change, not with repetition.    Compared to a few years ago, this K'nex community is dwindling on the edge of a cliff.  Many people have lost interest because nothing new was being made, so they just quit.  I do not support this decision, but I cannot blame them either.  Like many of the other "veterans" on this site, I have been on and off, but have never officially quit.  Sometimes one just needs to think.   Hopefully by now, I have made it clear: not another Mr.T should be posted ever again.  They are great guns for those learning the ropes.  That is about it.  There are so many other options out there.  Horizontal magazines, pump systems, lever systems, bolt systems, and so many more.  Make up your own system!  Combine different systems!  There are millions, maybe billions of different ways to put a thousand K'nex together, so why limit yourself.  You are all builders, which means that you see things in your head before you make it.  But sometimes these ideas come to us in inopportune times, so what do you do?  Write it down.  Even if your drawing skills are as pathetic as mine, just scribble it out so you can make sense of it, and then refine it later with a ruler.  Then get to work on it. So, here are the steps you can take to advance this community: 1.  Stop posting Mr.T!!!  He can be a good teacher, but that is about all. 2.  Be different!  My goal when I entered this community was to make guns that nobody has ever made.  No two of my guns are similar, nor are my guns like any others out there.  You have millions of options.  Make use of them! 3.  If you have an idea, write it down!  Even if it seems absurd, I guarantee that it, even if it only be small parts of it, will improve your building skill. I really hope this has made you want to make something different. Not much more I can say.  Just go do it. Oblivitus and TheDunkis have started building a database of different gun elements and different ways of approaching them.  Check it out and feel free to contribute!   http://knexbuilding.wikispaces.com/

Re-Use, Individual Cells from 18V NiCad

Seems that with a bit of randomnity in mfging, some cells in an 18V battery might fail before others. With that in mind, I'm trying to re-use individual cells after a pack craps out.  Test 1  Battery pack from a "drill master" which I got for  ~$2 at a thrift store. Google informs that this is a harborfreight tool, so expectations are low.  Upon disassembly of the pack, 1 of the spot-weld connections between cells had broken.  Since I don't currently have a 1.5v source, I'm using a 3v  source to charge 2 cells in series. Only charging for a few minutes at a time. Currently, this 2 cell set will light a couple xmas lites for a few minutes after charging for a few min. I'm uncertain of the calibration of my v-meter, but it currently indicates 2.65v for these 2 cells. Depending upon the source, NiCads should max out at 1.45 to 1.65 v per cell. Test 2: Pending- Ryobi drill batteries I'm uncertain how to get a good read on the accuracy of my meter without a high-end meter to compare against. Suggestions? Hopefully, I can find a proper 1 cell nicad charging device.  Thoughts? concerns? insights?

Farewell - Jules Verne's fiery demise.

Europe's first Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) Jules Verne successfully completed its six-month ISS logistics mission today with its controlled destructive re-entry over a completely uninhabited area of the South Pacific. Following a final deorbit burn at 14:58 CEST which slowed its velocity by 70 m/s, the ATV entered the upper atmosphere at an altitude of 120 km at 15:31 CEST. It broke up at an altitude of 75 km with the remaining fragments falling into the Pacific some 12 minutes later. The words and pictures are from the ESA website, but I got first notice from SpaceWeather.

Re-using 'company logo' shirts; I have a number of shirts, both polo/golf and button-down with logos over the breast.

I'm looking for some way to re-use the shirts, as they are pretty good quality shirts, so  don't want to just cut them into rags.  I'd rather get some wear out of them, but not advertise the company.  The emroidery is very strong, so picking it out destroys the base fabric.  Other than something else to iron over or taking them to a commercial embroidery machine, how else might I use them?

battery with easy charging method? Answered

I am looking for the best way to implement a battery supply for my project. It needs to be able to fit in an enclosure measuring 5 x 2.5 x 2 inches. It needs to have a voltage in the range of 7 to 12 volts and have a fair amount of capacity. (maybe around 1500 - 5000 mAh?) The battery(s) also should be easy to charge, such as through a regulated voltage supply, with no complex control circuitry. It can be multiple batteries. I am mainly looking for the best type of battery here. (NiMH, SLA, Lithium, etc.) Any suggestions?

Ideas for restoring a steamer trunk on a budget?

I acquired this great steamer trunk today with the intent of turning it into a coffee table/storage trunk for my growing collection of jadeite glassware.  However, I was so excited about finding it that I didn't inspect it as closely as I should have, and as a result, I've now got a very rusty steamer trunk on my hands - in some places the rust got so bad that it ate through the metal entirely, showing the wood beneath.   Now, as a college student, I simply just don't have the budget to get it professionally restored, and I'm okay with that; I'm looking at it as more of a stopgap than an investment.  But, I was wondering if there was something else I could do to fix it up?  I considered stripping off the remaining tin sheeting and using a rust-stopper on the hinges, etc, priming the exposed wood, and then simply painting over the entire thing. Any suggestions, tips, etc, are very much appreciated!

Editing & Re-Publishing Instructables

I've been getting a lot of subscription emails lately and they are for the same Instructables. (NO, not a bug).  I'm making the assumption that members are editing their Instructables and instead of just saving it, they are going through the publishing step again.... which sends yet another email about the same ible. While I understand the need for re-publishing (say you made a significant update after a few months) so I'm not suggesting that the publishing step be removed after ibles are already published, BUT there must be a better way. Perhaps there should be a NOTE on the publishing step saying "You're Instructable has already been published. It's unnecessary to re-publish". OR disable re-publishing within 24 hours of the last time the step was completed? Its almost getting to the point that I want to turn off notifications completely for Instructables, because I don't want an email about the same ible 6 times in one day... Thoughts anyone? UPDATE: How to Edit an Instructable without Re-Publishing: 1. Open your Instructable, make your changes and click the "Save" button. 2. Then hover your mouse over "More" (to the right of the "edit", "publish" & "share" tabs) and click on "Full Preview".   3. If you need to go back, click "edit" from the "Author Options". As long as you've clicked on the "Save" button there is NO NEED to Re-Publish for edits to take effect. Re-Publishing is unnecessary and just resends everyone who subscribes to you another subscription email.

I don't recall how I did this except it wa s an article in pop. mech. or pop. science magazine, or similar mag. I do remember that I used 24" wheels on a 26" frame and that they must have been less than 2" off-center to fit the frame. It was fairly easy to ride at slow speeds, but terribly hard to go fast, as it would tend to throw you off. It was a lot of fun, though. I hope someone can tell me how to build one of these again. Re-winding a PMDC motor?

I have a 12V 5000RPM 15A PMDC motor and even at its top speed I can stop it by hand which is just not right. I took the armature out and here is what I found: Its a 2pole with 16 winding slots, each winding is quite large but theirs only 3 wraps! I know if you half the wire surface area and double the wraps you get half the RPM. Currently the rotor has 3 wraps per coil of 18guage wire with easily enough room for 10x that. What wire size and how many wraps should I re-wind this motor to get maximum torque at 2000RPM?

Laptop batteries re-use

Hello all Instructables users (who read the forums anyway) I'm hoping to get an old laptop with a broken hard drive and @ sign on the keyboard. My plan is to turn this into a media pc, running off AC continuously (when needed, obviously, not all the time). Plug in a new hard drive, a tv and (possibly wireless) keyboard with trackball (and use an old android phone as controller too, maybe - a side project), and install geexbox, and there we go... But, this leaves an old laptop battery, which AFAIK holds a perfectly suitable charge, with nothing to do. Having just got an ebook reader, and being someone who enjoys a quiet read sometimes, I would quite like to use this battery to power a light so that I can read with as little impact to the environment as possible - I reckon a laptop battery would last a fair while with a few high power LED's. I'd also like to leave it in it's original packaging so that I can recharge it fairly easily. Is this a pointless pipe dream? Is this dangerous, as it's a Li-Po battery? Can I canvas for thoughts? TIA Steve

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle!

Lately I've been taking my spare time and using it to sit down (or sometimes stand) and desolder stuff from circuit boards. Just from one old computer motherboard that no longer works, you can harvest quite a few fully functional capacitors. For my example I'll post a couple pictures I took a while ago, one is a pile of parts beside my keyboard from an old motherboard I nearly completely stripped except for the sockets and other things I didn't need or didn't have the patience for. Tonight I found 4 more things to strip down, 2 mini power supplies (one from an old xbox, one from a junk tv set top box) and two toasted subwoofer amplifiers (no I don't plan on harvesting the transistors from them). I find it completely wasteful to see all the electronics that go into the landfill, simply because it broke, and from experience a lot of electrical failures are usually limited to one or two parts shorted out or gone bad (although this is not always the case). So this is my little "effort" to help save the planet. Does anyone think I could sell bulk "used" capacitors/resistors/diodes in say, mystery bags with random types of capacitors/resistors/diodes? I'm also doing this for my own personal sanity as I have gone to fix several motherboards in the past that simply required a bad capacitor to be replaced, woopy do, but it does no good if I can't find any parts in my parts bins! What do you guys think!? Also, would someone be willing to help me (maybe through msn would be easiest) identify certain parts I've found that I'm not entirely sure what they do or they're lacking of any useful numbers on them????

How can I by-pass power supply from old overhead projector?

I am wondering how I can use the power supply of the overhead projector and also use the High voltage supply it comes with. It does seem to be dependent on other circuitry and a quick Google search doesn't reveal much about this. The power supply needs feedback from a thermistor and a motherboard that is attached to the supply with a dual row pin of total 20 pins. The motherboard needs to be there in order for anything to work. I am wondering if there is a pin I can short similar in fashion to a computer power supply.  Any suggestions?
