Reading Online

Since you're reading this right now, you clearly read online. But exactly how we read online is not so clear. Slate, my favorite place to read online (besides Instructables), takes a very interesting look at the trends behind online reading. No puns, though? I refuse that refuse. And make sure to rest your eyes after reading the article.Check it out here

Reading Comments

When a person reads reviewer comments serially, over a period of time, the order 'newest-to-oldest' works well. But if a person reads a bunch of comments (often spanning a number of days) at once, it is much easier if the comments can be viewed 'oldest-to-newest'. Any chance of adding that option to the instructables page?

Read Later

Suggestion: I quite often go through your site thinking I want to read that later. As it does not seem possible at the moment it would be great to have a tick box on every instructable that allowed users to keep those instructables they want to read as a list under their own name. You could then look through your own list and read when ever you want to without having to search for it again then unselect the instructable when its finished with.

Should I let my son buy headphones? Answered

My sons birthday came and I bought him a cellphone and have him $50. We went shopping for a little while and pointed out some brand new gaming headphones that were $50. A Read Later button

Hey! I just want to suggest that the instructables team adds a "read later" (or something similar like "want to do") button that bookmarks an instructable you're interested so you can check it out later because sometimes you want to build a project and don't have the materials on hand,so with a read later button you can come back to the instructable later without a lot of searching for the exact one you were planning on doing. Not sure if this is in the right place so please redirect if it isn't. Thanks!

Read with your Kids

Hey this is Brett. I have something that's extremely important for you to know. You need to READ with your KIDS! You need to do it regularly! You need to do it at the same time each day! It's been proven that kids who are read to by a parent can read better, earlier! In this day and age far too many kids are dropped off at a daycare and plopped in front of a TV set. I remember the good old days, growing up on the farm. As a four year old I remember settling down with Mom in front of our wood-burning stove. I would stare at the dancing flames as Mom would read "Dick and Jane" to me. The older children would do something constructive like a jigsaw puzzle or draw pictures at the kitchen table. Dad would sit off to one side of the room and carve us some small animal figures out of walnut. Thinking back to those days really brings back those feelings of warmth and security. It tears my heart out to think about my grandchildren and what they might have to look back on. Instead of the glow of a cheery fire and the safety of Mom's lap. They might look back and only remember the cold glow of the computer screen and the uncaring embrace of a beanbag chair. Once again, Please. Please read to your children. This really works! Books on tape just don't cut it. I read to my own children every night from the books they picked out. They've grown up now and are starting their own families. I hope that they'll think back to their nights with Dad and pass on this tradition of reading to their kids. Thanks, Brett.

Can you read it?

I've been meaning to show you this for a while, but I finally took some photos when I went to visit my parents. It's a clock. Really, it is. The arm rotates once per hour. The ball on the end is a camera, pointing at the ground. To tell the time, you walk around the clock to find out what hour is circled at the base of the arm, then look through one of the small round windows on the large sphere to see a TV that shows what the camera sees. The minutes are only marked every ten minutes, and in between those times the camera looks at featureless ground and confused people trying to see the time by looking up at the camera. On the hour, the arm raises in the air, and the camera has a look at the shop roofs, which are as ugly as commercial roofs the world over, and the speakers next to the benches (when they're working) make an odd fog-horn sort of noise. It's a bizarre, unfunctional object, in too small a space. Maybe if it was in a wide open square it would work as public interactive art, but here, wedged in a corner of a town with high unemployment it's a criminal waste of money.

Reading plan.....what do you all like to read?

I have taken a break from the technical reading and am reading something a wee bit on the ligher side: I tend to read 2 - 3 books at a time,  switching off from one to the other depending on WHERE I happen to have the time to read.  Currently, I am reading The Varieties of Scientific Experience,  by Carl Sagan.  When at the wash house, or waiting for Ellen to get read to go/do something, I am reading The Enchanted Loom by Robert Jastrow. Both are fairly easy reads (at least I think so).

edge space

The layout of the pages in Instructables, sometimes makes it quite difficult to read the left hand edge of the page. May I suggest that the page should not start hard against the left hand edge, but that a small space (margin) be allowed to ease the transition from one line of print to the next.

Reading 12 rows of data from an SD card every minute and storing the data into Arrays using Gboard pro Arduino

Hi, I am working on a project that measures temperature and current, store it on an SD card (csv file) and send them to a website. I decided to sample the signals every 5 seconds and store the data to the SD card using time interrupt (TimerOne). My plan is to sample and store data for 1 minute and then read the sampled data from the SD card and store them into 2 Arrays i.e Array1 for temperature and Array2 for the current and send the data to the website. Thus far I have managed to sample and store the data using the time interrupt. I also included a count variable in the interrupt subroutine so as to know how many times the interrupt has occurred. Since I am sampling and storing the data every 5 seconds and I want to read the data stored in the SD card every minute, so when count = 12 I would like to read  the last 12 readings (24 since its current and temperature ) and store them into 2 Arrays.   The problem I have is that I do not know how to read the data from the SD card and store them into two Arrays and would like your help. Note: the Reading of the SD card will not be in the Interrupt subroutine Any help or suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks Muundu

"Read more" doesn't actually allow me to read more

The "read more" link that's on the right when I'm viewing someone's profile, including my own, doesn't seem to do anything. All the text is already visible, nothing happens when I click the link. I'm assuming that the link would work if there is something that's not being shown, but why have the link at all when there is nothing more to show? Testing now... no, even when there is something more to show, the link doesn't work for me, in SeaMonkey or Firefox (latest versions) on XP. It just doesn't respond when I click it.

Reading a 16x2 LCD screen

Dear Techfreaks, I have a rather technical question for you guys. I have a big, company-suited coffee machine which I'd like to mod, to be internet connected. My idea is to read the LCD screen of the machine, by intercepting the wires, and interpreting the signals with a microcontroller. I'd need to read the data, and convert it into ASCII, so I can drop them on a website, and in fact have a (sort of live) view of the LCD.  The used LCD is a standard 16x2, 16-pin LCD. Does anyone have any experience with doing this? Or any tips? I couldn't find a project online which wanted to do the same thing as I did. Thanks in Advance, Willem.

K'nexers (and others too) - please read

I have noticed recently that a number of members have been arguing with each other, and myself over similar subjects. Some of it is still hanging over from the zak incident which has subsided now. But, the majority of it is to do with skill, and hierarchy. Let me tell you all something, and it does apply to almost all k'nexers, including me, except for a select few.K'nex is a toy, in principle. It is meant to be fun. The whole point of k'nex on instructables in the first "era" (and, in fact, instructables itself) was to show the world what you have made (I have been browsing the site since mid 2007, and have witnessed this). But in the last year or so, in the k'nex section of instructables, k'nex hasn't been meant just for fun for a lot of people. It has become a competition. I don't know why, but it started at the invention of KI. Now I'm not pointing fingers, but since the split of members, there has been a rivalry between KI and instructables. Then, KI members decided that they were all better and more advanced in k'nexing skill that iblers, and then the majority quit ibles all together. This started a full scale feud. There are arguments, not because of the people, but because of their website "allegience".Now, this has become even worse, with people coming in from nothing and arguing simply because they can.K'nex is a toy, meant to be fun. There should be no competition, or hierarchy. We seem to have forgotten the whole point of the site. To show the world what you have made, and to help each other make them better, not to make fun of people who aren't as good as you. We can still have fun, just don't make fun and arguments. Think.

Can't read replies to a comment

How can I read the replies to a comment for an instructable? Every time I click on "4 replies", for example, for a comment, nothing happens. This happens even though I am signed in, and for any type of instructable. It is really frustrating, as I might want to reply, but don't want to say the exact thing one of the other replies has just said. Plus, being able to read the replies is many times as enlightening as the instructable. Also, writing this question is very limiting, as this applies to every category and every channel, but there is no way to write it that way.

FSR - Conductive foam readings

Hello! I am making a prototype of a force sensitive resistor, and i am using, to old 97%kobber coins, metal sheet and a tiny piece of conductive foam that i got from a tv-repair shop. The setup is not very good, but its a start, and i am planning the next move for better results... Now... I want some decent understanding of how the readings work, and why I get these results.. First test, are written with black, and and as you can see it, has the same amount of space between 0-1kg and 1-2kg, but 2-3 and 3-4 changes to a very small space? Why is that? Second question is, that i have used the x10, to read larger forces. 0-2,5kg and 2,5-5kg has same amount of space. Will the space decrease too, when getting further up the scale too?  - I know the conductive foam has its limits too, but just to be clear of my readings. Thanks in advance! I hope you can see the readings on the picture..!

Time Machine read failure?

Hey all- back again. my time machine is giving me grief again for an unknown reason. I got my drive (seagate replica 2tb) about a month ago, and it has worked great until now. I split the drive (not a partition) into 2 parts, one for my itunes library, and one for my backups (this was about 1.5 weeks ago). Last time I checked it (3 days ago) it worked fine. I accidentally left my computer on while we were gone for a few days- and now that I have come back my backups fail. It says that my drive is read only now. I have checked and it says my last backup was they 25th at 12:08 AM, so its been about 24 hours since the last backup. I try to repair the drive in disk utility but it fails and tells me to restore the drive. I can access all my itunes data on the volume on the same drive, but my backups wont work. Anyone know how to fix this?

INSTRUCTABLES MEMBERS PLEASE READ!

Well, firstly, I would like to start by pointing out that people cloning other Instructable Members shouldnt be done as it may affect the real, original member. Secondly, I have seen quite alot of 'Ibles mebers being cloned. --Example: A person called Dj-Radio had cloned the real Dj Radio. Now I really don't know what this person's intentions were, but I believe that he was doing it to make the real member look bad. Recently or previously cloned members: -DJ Radio -I Am Canadian -Jollex -Dutchwarlord -Dsman -Kipkay -Killerk -Mykhailo -If there is someone please tell me and I will add to the list. On one occasion, I saw a comment that had been made by this 'Dj-Radio' person that included very bad language and it was breaking the 'Be Nice' policy. Fortunately the comment was removed by a community request but his account remained active by the looks of things. Now I believe that any form of bad language or innappropriate behaviour on any account should lead to a temporary ban from the website or even a permanent ban if needed. Anyway, Please keep this in mind in the future. Thanks, Hiyadudez.
