From Anime to Reality

Someone was such a fan of Akira that they recreated Kaneda's bike from the manga and the movie. The bike is actually street legal and I'm looking forward to reports of it tearing it up in Neo Tokyo in vicious street gang battles. Extra bonus points if it manages to create light trails. Link

Logic breaks reality

My friend told me about this earlier today and I thought it was brilliant: Cheese has lots of holes. The more holes you have, the less cheese you have. The more cheese you have, the more holes you have. So logically, the more cheese you have, the less cheese you have. This got me thinking and I'd quite like to see if anybody has anything similar to this logic fail.

3D soldiers and aliens on your desktop ! - Augmented Reality

So for the past few weeks augmented reality has been in the news and all over the blogs quite a bit, with smart-phones getting more powerful augmented reality has become feasible.I get really excited about this kind of stuff, its geeky, techy and i love it.So obviously i really wanted to try this new "Augmented Reality" software,There are various applications for iPhones and Android phones but i have a blackberry with no internet so no joy for me there. There are quite a few different pieces of software for both Mac and PC But i don't have the latest Operating system for my mac so none of it worked for me.So then i started looking for online augmented reality, something where i wouldn't have to download an application. Finally i found a promotional website for the new movie "District 9" The AR (augmented reality) was on the website and you dont have to download anything to use it.All you have to do is print a marker and hold it in front of your webcam. This is not the best AR software and the applications you download run smoother, faster and have more features, but it is a nifty piece of of web design and marketing that will give you a taste of augmented reality. The first time the little 3d soldier pops onto your screen you will be amazed. The website can be found hereMulti-National United TrainingAnd you can download and then print the marker from that website. This is a video demonstrating how to set it up, and a demo of the AR if you dont want to try it yourself. Thanks for reading, Leave a comment saying what you think about augmented reality and how you would like to use it !

The Lost Ring ARG

We just sat in on our friend Jane McGonigal's SXSW talk on how life could be far more awesome and rewarding were it organized more like alternate reality games, and were lucky enough to get a peek into her new game, The Lost Ring. The concept is pretty neat: Ariadne woke up blindfolded in a corn maze outside of Johannesburg with no memory, Olympic-calibur athletic skills, and a tattoo bearing the words "trovu la ringon perditan" -- Esperanto for "find the lost ring." She sets out to find what is happening to her, and discovers others with similar stories. There's already a wiki, and the game will almost certainly spawn offshoot projects all over the net and physical world. Background info:The Lost Ring is a global alternate reality adventure created in partnership between McDonald's, AKQA and Jane McGonigal. Designed in collaboration with the IOC, The Lost Ring invites players from across the globe to join forces online and in the real world, as they investigate forgotten mysteries and urban legends of the ancient games. The Lost Ring recognizes McDonald's historic sponsorship of the Olympic Games, and brings the spirit of the Games to people around the world. It started a week ago and should run for around 6 months. Go check it out, and join up!

Rube Goldberg TV Show Casting Call

This sounds like fun:A new Discovery Channel show is looking for teams of ARTISTS, SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, ARCHITECTS and DESIGNERS with experience in building RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINES. (Thanks to BoingBoing for the link!)More details:This show shoots in January in Los Angeles so the application process will be moving quickly.Super Rubes is a weekly one-hour show that follows a band of talented creators as they design, build, and set off a massive Chain Reaction Machine in front of a cheering crowd. The point of a Chain Reaction Machine is to do something very simple, like turn on a light bulb, using as many steps as possible. This is an opportunity for engineers to let their creative hair down and have some fun building a giant Chain Reaction Machine. Our team will take on impossible challenges (i.e. , Can you crack an egg with a human hair?) in a race against the clock. We are looking for fun, interesting, charismatic and outgoing individuals of all ethnicities and types 25-39 years old to comprise a diverse team of people who are involved in engineering/building: This means architects, engineers, scientists, pyro-technicians, art directors/designers, even professors or hobbyists who are simply passionate about these topics. We don't need an expert in every area, just someone who loves to design and build. The team should be a mix of a skills, a mix of personality types, and have a playful, funny camaraderie, so if there are existing teams out there, all the better, or if couples/triples have worked together and want to present themselves as the start of a team, we are open to that too.

Instructables' Alternate Reality Game. Why not?

While I was at work I hit on an idea.  The instructable's community if filled with people with broad expertise, talents and interests from all over the world.  This is the key element in both creating and solving alternate reality games.  For those who may not know, an ARG is a game that is played by hiding clues around the world for people to find and solve.  These clues can be extremely vague or even downright unbelievable.  This sounds daunting and like it wouldn't work but it actually works better than you could believe.  ARG's have been used to promote movies, products, etc by engaging players in a reality within our own and attracting press attention.  Some better known examples are: A.I.(The Beast) - This site also includes some other examples Star Trek - this one is unbelievably complicated but with thousands of dedicated fans it was pretty much solved. The thought is we, the community here at instructables.com, could run an ARG to draw in people and the media to promote a topic of our choice using the people and talents found here.  If we work together we might be able to succeed at something amazing and promote instructables or even environmentally friendly lifestyles and technology.  I don't know if I personally have the time to fully dedicate myself to something as big as this and I have never had the chance to participate in one but with the right group of instructable members this could become a reality. Story example:  Messages from a future where the world is coming to an end due to widespread global disasters begin to appear all over the planet warning and guiding its players through efforts that might be able to prevent such a future.  It might even be possible to run the game over several years/decades and never let people know if it is real, just a game, or even who is doing it.  If done right, this might even cause people to affect evironmental change in their area. This would work kind of like the biggest, longest stealth flash mob ever created : )  The benefit is the costs would be significantly lower than traditional ARG's since we are all over the world and know how to do/build amazing things and love doing so in our free time. Any thoughts? I would suggest that specific details should be kept out of public forums like this one to prevent an information leak if this becomes a reality. UPDATE:  I have setup a webpage(http://arg.42dotservegame.org) to help manage the different aspects of a multi-user project like this.  The page is restricted to only those that have been invited to join.  To get an invite, please PM me and I will get you setup with an account.  The username will be the same as your instructable username to prevent confusion.  This is to limit access initially until everything gets rolling.  Later, active users will be given rights to invite others they think will be good resources.  As of right now there are still some things that need to be worked on within the page but I think it is functional enough to be used.  Features that are provided are: -Integrated chat -Forums -Wiki -News -Calendar -Limited/restricted file uploads and downloads

Existentialists, how do you find a meaning for life? Answered

Lately (and by lately I mean for a while now) I have been experiencing existential/nihilist/teen angst. I'm totally detached from reality, especially the future which is what I'm supposed to care about, what everyone cares about. I think that life is essentially meaningless, it came to exist because of a fluke, and it continues to exist because perpetuates itself (evolution). So I've been trying to make life matter to me, existentialist style. But I can't seem to get the knack of it. I don't know what I want out of life, I'm not clear on what exactly there is to want....I'm not even sure that anything is real except me. Lately I've taken to telling myself that things are meant to be, and there is a greater purpose, I just can't comprehend it yet.....which may be the most ridiculous thing I've ever told myself..... I know most people think this stuff, but don't take it seriously. They just go on living. But I just can't....perhaps because these abstract thoughts seem as real to me as everything else (not very)? Sorry if I'm totally incoherent.... HELP. please?

DIY Virtual Reality Omni-Shoes

Since buying an oculus rift, realizing the limitations of movement. I've been researching all the different types of Omni-directional methods of moving in a virtual enviroment. Infinadeck seems to be the best option but it's probably too expensive for me.Vortrex looks a nice concept, I would like to try and see what it feels like having my forward motion cancelled out. By building my own conveyor belt shoes, there is a video on youtube demonstrating powered shoeshttps://youtu.be/C5hPyHxrz94The prototype above, uses roller skates powered by two motors with flexible shafts This is similar to what I want to replicate. I dont mind being tethered by power cables.I'm trying to put together a list of the main components suitable for operating under these load conditions. What motors/flexible shafts are a good choice for this application?.

Possibility of "gravity chamber" becoming a reality

I used to watch the show  "Dragon Ball Z" when I was younger, on some of the episodes there was a gravity chamber which would increase the gravity in the room. It would go up to 450G (1G= 1 times the Earth's gravity) I know this is completely impossible but could a device like this even exist and if it did would make it to 2G's? Before you respond I know this is just a show and not reality. If this did work this would help athletes train and astronauts (if and when the moon is colonized)

Ambitious Paper, Fabric Folding Project PLS HELP ME?

Our teacher asked us to do an origami product, to show off how geometry is strongly related into that. I decided to make a small project, which is a landscape demonstrator. I tried to be a little bit off the box, but I guess that I failed to bring that into reality. the design as shown in the attached image, should be like a semi-circular plane (70*150cm) which contains the landscape picture, that should fold and fit in a small portable box ( 30*10*10cm). The folding action should be controlled by a small electric motor which is already inside the box. I really don't know how to make this come to reality, and I don't know which pattern I'm going to use.

C3 Corvette Stingray to Flex Fuel/Swapping engines? Or, Tell my if my boyhood fantasy can be a reality

Short story: How hard would it be to drop a new, maybe flex-fuel, oh-say-maybe-an Impala engine into a C3 Corvette? Long story: I love Corvettes. A lot. I have decided to save up enough money over the next two years to purchase a C3 (1968-82) Corvette, and bring it up to modern motoring glory. I've been poking around, and looks like I can get a POS for about 10-15 grandios americanos. ANYWAY I'd like to replace the old engine with a nice new fuel injected, computer controlled, more efficient engine then whatever is inside. All I'm really after is the body. Frumpy 70's interior and matching engine numbers be screwed. My question to you: Several new Chevys are flex fuel, how hard would it be to get a wrecked car (I'm thinking an Impala might be about right), take out the engine and computer control goodness, and stick it in said 'Vette? My plans for the Corvette, I'm thinking a '80-'82 if I have choice, I'd totally get a '64 split window, but they be EXPENSIVE: ~Complete interior overhaul; brushed aluminum dash (retro-motorfied-Apple-esque?), sound system etc... ~New paint job; blue with silver racing stripes (like the new Shelby Cobra, reversed) ~New engine, and what ever mechanical tune-ups are required. ~I might make the sunroof removable ~Whatever else comes to mind in my owner ship of the most awesome thing on 4 wheels Thanks!!

Maker Movement Gaining Recognition

Tim O'Reilly has some really nice things to say about Instructables and our community of people building things and doing it themselves over on the O'Reilly Radar post Maker Movement Gaining Recognition. In addition, what today is "do it yourself" is tomorrow's big business. The hacker building homebrew robots shows us something about the future of robotics. The crafter incorporating technology into traditional crafts shows us something about how computing is becoming pervasive. The folks playing with laser cutters and 3D printers are telling us something about the future of manufacturing. The folks hooking up sensors to tie physical buildings to their analogues in Second Life are telling us that the future may not be in virtual reality but a new kind of augmented reality. For a long time, Tim has had success identifying trends by looking to hackers to see what they're up to and how the problems they're solving will soon become mainstream. So, what problems are you working on right now? What's you're next Instructable that's poised to go mainstream?(The image is from our July Show and Tell.)

Need information regarding hallucinatory diseases Answered

I'm doing research for a novel and one of the characters is schizophrenic, or whichever form of disorder would best suit the plot. A have a few questions regarding the nature of schizophrenia, and wikipedia can only help so much: What are the main causes of schizophrenia? Is it possible to be brought on by trauma or through nurture? Or is it mainly genetic? Just how realistic are such hallucinations? What is the level of interactivity between the person and hallucination? I.e. Would it be possible for a schizophrenic to imagine an entire person (like an imaginary friend, only much more real)? And if it's possible to hallucinate an entire being, could they, say, carry out a conversation? How difficult is it for an average schizophrenic to differentiate hallucination and reality? If someone has a recurring hallucination, will they eventually realize it is a hallucination and not reality? What is the probability that only one type of hallucination would be present (like, going along with the imaginary friend bit, that the person would only see the friend and wouldn't have any other hallucinations)? Please realize that this is a work of fiction and a bit of artistic license may be applied. I thank you greatly for any light you can shed on this matter. -Y

Ring Contest Question

I have a question regarding the ring contest. Did you have to actually make the ring or could you have designed it, planned out what went into it, created a mold model, and had a jeweler create the finished product from your design? I designed my wife's engagement ring with drawings and even a wax model but did not have the proper tools or materials to actually make it so a local jeweler put my design into reality and I critiqued it until it was exactly as I wanted.
