Is there a way to wire a button that would be pushed in order to activate a video playing on a monitor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you.

Radioactive lift controls recalled in France

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India's atomic safety body said Thursday that radioactive scrap metal which found its way into buttons installed into lifts in France had been traced back to a western Indian foundry. At least four Indian firms were involved in the manufacture of the components, an official said, but it was still unclear where the contaminated scrap originated."We are tracking back the whole chain," Satya Pal Agarwal, head of the radiological safety division of India's Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, told AFP."We are taking steps in each place. Exporters have been advised to buy monitors to check their materials before exporting."France's Mafelec firm delivered thousands of lift buttons to Otis, a subsidiary of the US elevator company, which installed them in at least 500 lifts in the country over the summer.Otis has said it is now in the process of removing the buttons, after France's Nuclear Safety Authority announced Tuesday that 20 workers who handled the lift buttons had been exposed to excessive levels of radiation. The French nuclear safety agency has said the lift buttons contained traces of radioactive Cobalt 60.AFP articleSteel items imported {into Sweden} from India showing faint traces of radioactivity were found in Sweden, before the same substance was traced on Indian-made lift buttons in France, officials said Wednesday. The levels of Cobalt 60, a radioactive form of the metal, were considered harmless and the steel components have not been recalled, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) told AFP."Dutch customs discovered that a shipment of industrial flanges from India to Sweden showed traces of Cobalt 60," SSM spokesman Mattias Skoeld said.Focus Agency feedFrench elevator maker Otis said it would remove the buttons from hundreds of lifts it has installed after a radioactivity scare over Indian-supplied materials. The company made the announcement after France's Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) said 20 French workers who had handled buttons used in lifts had been exposed to to excessive levels of radiation. An Otis spokesman said the firm's plan to remove the buttons "concerned 500 to 600 lifts out of the 2,500 that Otis has installed, modernised or repaired between August 21 and October 9 even if there is no danger for users."The ASN classed the incident at factory of the Mafelec firm in the east-central French town of Chimilin at "Level Two" on a scale of seven because of the exposure of more than 10 people to doses exceeding the reglementary limit.SA Times article

My most treasured memory was the collection of books at school, they had pictures of Illuminated Letters. Chimp beats students at computer game

Young chimpanzee can recall number placement better than people can.http://www.nature.com/news/2007/071203/full/news.2007.317.htmlA particularly cunning seven-year-old chimp named Ayumu has bested university students at a game of memory. He and two other young chimps recalled the placement of numbers flashed onto a computer screen faster and more accurately than humans."It's a very simple fact: chimpanzees are better than us -- at this task," says Tetsuro Matsuzawa, a primatologist at Kyoto University in Japan who led the study. The work doesn't mean that chimps are 'smarter' than humans, but rather they seem to be better at memorizing a snapshot view of their surroundings -- whether that be numbers on a screen or ripe figs dangling from a tree. Humans may have lost this capacity in exchange for gaining the brainpower to understand language and complex symbols, says Matsuzawa.

Looking for: Metal detector for Non-Ferrous metals.

Hello, I'm looking for a detailed schematic ( or two ) on a metal detector capable of locating non-ferrous materials to an extent. ( titanium in specific )  I recall finding a fair bit of documentation on such a thing a few months back, but I can no longer recall the exact method that they used. If anybody knows where I can find some detailed information and/or schematics I would very much appreciate it.  I have a reasonable amount of experience in building somewhat complex circuits, and can learn what ever I do not yet understand, hopefully. ;) I have a very good object to test such a device on, should I manage to build one. It's something I keep close to me at all times, and goes wherever I go.   ( that sounds kind of like a riddle ) On a side note; anybody had Deja Vu over four times in an hour? I think my mind is running in loops. Any help or insight would be very much appreciated.  -Jake

Private Publishing and Messaging - feature idea.

A repeated thought about publishing private projects, and PMing in general:It would be good to be able to mass mail a link to a private project, especially "to everybody I subscribe to" and "to everybody who subscribes to me".Is such a thing technically possible? If it is possible, is it likely? I feel it would make an excellent inducement to turn pro ("features not content").(I know this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I don't recall seeing a response.)

Dilithium created and observed in the laboratory!

According to a news report in Physics Today, scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have confirmed the creation of element 114 first reported by Dubna physicists in 1999. As true afficionados may recall from the original Star Fleet Technical Manual (pictured), element 114 is dilithium, used to regulate the matter-antimatter reaction for warp propulsion. Unfortunately, with a lifetime of just a few hundred milliseconds, it's unlikely that crystals of element 114 will be produced any time soon.

Anyone have a instructions on how to build an electric arc engraver?

I want to build my own electric arc engraver similar to an Actograph or a Martindale. Not prepared to spend $400+ for one. Not the vibrating kind like a Dremel but one that burns into the metal. Had one at a shop I used to work at but I never got around to copying it. Volume of gas from given weight of dry ice?

I'm rusty on basic chem. specifically, molarity, molecular weight... Dry ice, frozen CO2 is sold by the pound. After seeing this, it has me wonder if anyone has anyone else experimented with making fishing lures? Particularly, has anyone tried making any unusual fishing lures? With any success? Well, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the appropriate place, so tell me if I am not, but here is my scholarship entry: I would make the physical incarnation of SmarterChild, the infamous AIM robot. It could make casual conversation, remember your name, and do certain tasks on command, such as recall information and entertain a user with dances, jokes, and games. My other idea is a study bot. I would make it so that it could get the information from the subject of choice and quiz you, making buzzing noises when you got the question wrong, and lighting up when you got the question right.

Will I still have 3G access if I buy a used Kindle? Answered

It seems like such a simple question, but I can't seem to find a clear answer. I seem to recall reading a while back that the 3G access was tied to the account, not the Kindle, so if you bought a used one the subscription wouldn't transfer. Other places seem to suggest that you have to somehow transfer its registration with Amazon. Amazon doesn't have any answers, they want you to buy a new one. And yes, I know not all Kindles are built for 3G access, let's assume that I'm getting one that is.

How may I filter out certain instructables from my account, so they would no longer appear in my searches/browsing? Answered

Howdy! I recall in the early days of Instructables, there was more of a focus on actual working technology ideas. Nowadays, many of my searches become jumbled with Instructables of nature more asthetic than function. It is my desire to be able to filter out these instructables from ever appearing in my searches again, preferably individually for higher precision. Is this possible? Or have I just suggested a new feature to include in an upcoming site upgrade? Thank you kindly, your help is incredibly appreciated. Phunky Monkey, esq.

re-spoke bicycle wheels

When I was much younger, I re-spoked two bicycle wheels off-center and put them on a bicycle for a parade. I don't recall how I did this except it wa s an article in pop. mech. or pop. science magazine, or similar mag. I do remember that I used 24" wheels on a 26" frame and that they must have been less than 2" off-center to fit the frame. It was fairly easy to ride at slow speeds, but terribly hard to go fast, as it would tend to throw you off. It was a lot of fun, though. I hope someone can tell me how to build one of these again. Tin Cloth

I am concerned Instructables could be hurt by the Prudometer being ratched too high on comments.  That's bad for the company. Here's a post just sent to Tin Cloth that was automatically rejected for either being irrelevant or abusive: "I recall 60 years ago when my parents bought me an oil cloth slicker in Istanbul, Turkey.  It was kinda smelly, but it worked until I outgrew it.  That was just plain cloth, not canvas. I use that mix of bee's wax, turpentine and linseed oil as a preservative for old tools.  I got a paint can of it in the garage.  Much more durable than WD-40." How "plain Jane" can you get?  I came back to visit because of the newsletter.

Has anyone converted a waterbed to adjustable airbed?

I have a California King, dual mattress waterbed that I would like to convert to an adjustable airbed, similar to the Select Comfort " Sleep Number" bed. (they cost over $1500).  My wife has a real bad disc in her back, and I have to keep increasing the water level  firmness.  We use a memoryfoam top, with a very firm density of 5.5 lbs per sf, if I recall correctly.  She cannot sleep on a regular mattress (we have one).  Surgery is out (no insurance, unemployed, own too much land, etc, to qualify for aid).  Has anyone tried this?
