how to rig a static trapeze?

I've built a sturdy static trapeze (welded bar, spliced rope) and would like to know how to rig it in a cost effective but safe manner. My mounting point is a steel beam, and the two ropes of the trapeze end spliced around 24mm galvanised steel thimbles which I need to fix to the bar. It would be great if methods could be provided that utilise materials found at local hardware stores - I know you can use crane slings but the only supplier I can find is a prohibitively distant one :)

Jury-rig it contest...

Either the requirements for the contest failed to be made clear, or the entries were assessed and chosen on a different set of requirements. It seems to me that a lot of the entries were on the fine line of professional engineering, not a fast solution to an everyday problem. Paracord fishing lure? Of course. Frankenstein laser engraver? Not very 'McGyver-ish,' more 'Einstein-ish.' Sour grapes? Maybe, as I had en entry. But I still say that the automatic TIG feeder was 'engineered' not 'McGyvered'. Maybe the contest itself should have won.

Treetop Ornament Mover/Squirrel Ski Lift/Aerial Transporter

Not sure where this should go, exactly, feel free to recommend.  Last year, for a Christmas lawn decoration, we wanted to have some plywood "gifts" delivered across the lawn. Combined with Santasaurus Rex and his Reindingos, we came up with the following: (embedding not working out for me, link here) We used 20" bicycle wheels held horizontally, supported entirely from above, and ended up using the cheapest electric drill from home depot, with a wheel chucked up, to friction drive one of the bike wheels. This worked, but it was very loud, and the setup from last year was mostly destroyed when we took it all out of the trees.  I'd really like to take another shot at moving ornaments, and the drive end is the biggest hangup. Does anyone have a suggestion on doing something similar?

Bicycle Generator upgrade for a rig

Okay- My boyfriend thinks I'm absolutely crazy, but I would like to modify the bicycle generator a la this instructable. I was hoping to have some way to attach it to an axle of an 18 wheeler tractor. Then the trouble would be hooking up the battery to a generator so we wouldn't have to pay for gas to power the ac and tv when we're sitting still. I'm hoping some good mind out there would have some tips! Many thanks!

Rigging Laptop SSD to Desktop SATA

So I'm looking at upgrading my computer with a Solid State Drive to make it boot faster, but I don't want to pay like $200 for one off newegg. I was wondering if it's possible to rig one from say an EEE PC (which can be bough used/for parts pretty cheap on ebay/CL these days) into my regular SATA port, and what the performance would be like compared to a desktop SSD drive. Thanks!

3 Axis Rotating Flight Simulation Rig

I have currently started building a 3 axis rotating Flight simulation rig that can simulated any 3D motion with a pilot inside the main cabin in control. I know the project needs a lot of disciplines working together (Steel design-mechanics-electrical-electronics-control-programming) So I assembled a team of engineers who got interested in the idea but we are not all highly experienced and the issue is new to all of us. So far we managed to design the rig it self as in steel design area. when we started moving along to the next phase which is the mechanical parts and joints we faced a lot of issues regarding the weight and balance of the rigs. The attached image is for a flight simulator done by a company in Russia. We have great ideas for improving that design and building our own non expensive simulator. I didn't post our full design model done in solid works cause it's not yet perfected. All I asking is that , if there is any one out there willing to help us share the knowledge or has a bit of experience in the subject, or wants to join our collaborate work, please don't hesitate to contacts us. I don't know the forum rules so I won't post my contact information here, but please feel free to discuss the subject with us on the forum, so we might benefit all together from this experience.

SEEKING: I need a safe way/fx rig to explode a watermelon on a tv show...? Answered

Hi gang, I'm working on a show and I need to make a live audience believe that their 'telepathic psychic powers' have made a watermelon explode. I can build a booth with a lexan/plexiglass window so that watermelon doesn't spray the audience, this will also allow me to hide special fx rigs in it. I've done a somewhat similar rig before where I made the watermelon fall unnoticed through a trap door while a nozzle simultaneously sprayed watermelon guts against the plexi (so it looked like it exploded but didn't really). This time I'd really like to make it blow up.  I have a pyrotech license and have access to some basic explosives, but I think I would prefer to explore compressed air-based explosions. Anyway, any ideas would be appreciated. Please find a rough sketch attached. Many thanks! DAZU

Could I rig my motor to run a bike?

Okay, so I have a permanent magnet motor I was using as the generator for a Giromill (wind turbine). It's rated at 375 RPM for 120V I believe, and I'm uncertain as to its other characteristics... I've read that voltage is generally proportional to speed in a motor, and amperage to torque, so would hooking up a couple of car batteries or something similar be an effective way to power me and a bicycle around, or am I missing something (other than a control mechanism, of course)? In short, I know that car batteries can work to power a bike, but the unknown here is my motor, and whether it'd be able to work in this circumstance.

How to rig a capacitive touch to a usb keyboard (or gamepad)?

I need to make a touch sensitive (capacitive) button that triggers a key. I got a capacitive demo board from qprox that should be fine...I touch it and I can hook it up to an LED that gets lit. But if I try to put the wires from a button on a gamepad to the out of the demo board, the button is constantly in the "Down" state. I think I remember reading somewhere about a polarity reverser or something so that it reverses the On and Off state, but not sure what I need. Also, the demo board is powered via a small watch battery which is perhaps conflicting with the power from the USB? I'm not quite sure the best way to do this. I think I can power the demo board using the USB power rather than the battery. I also would like some advice on creating the Capacitor to a 3" button surface are that goes through 1/4" glass. I've got a resistor that upped the Qs so that it works through glass, but not sure how to make it fit to a desired "button" shape.

Need help understanding LED drivers

Ok, I'm a newb to electronics and i'm having trouble figuring something out. Inspired by Dan's instructable, I decided to try and build my own headlamp. However, I've run into a problem. I have no idea what LED driver to use. I'm planning on using three of these bulbs, at 3.7v each and a max wattage of 4. I know if I rig them in series, the LED driver needs to be at least 11.1V, but my question is does the wattage of the driver need to be 12? Or should I rig the bulbs in parallel from my power source, and have one of each of these rigged to them individiually? Also, advice on whether it would be preferable to rig them in series or parallel would be great. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Outrigger specs seem a little etchasketch??

Three piece plywood outrigger canoe, current rig has a 16 foot hull consisting of the two outer pieces, and is 22 inches wide. It’s hooked up with a tacking rig, a 14 foot mast, and an 11’-10” boom. Originally, it would total 24 feet with the third middle section, but I’m not building that. With a hull 16' long coupled with a fat 22" width, and a simple tacking rig, am I guna get much speed on this thing? What’s more is that the closest body of water is "Steal house lake" and other various lakes in and around the Killeen, Ft. Hood, Austin (Texas) area, everything’s bigger in Texas, but they're still just lakes, coupled with a 24' monster designed to cut and glide over ocean class behemoths (also why I kicked the 8' mid section that i really, really don’t need in these tiny waters). So what do you think, the plans I’ve got are solid, clear, and decisive, the boat and rig are all drawn up, and I’m about to start the first piece of the hull tomorrow (soon as I get the wood). Should I stick with this 16' by 22" hull, should I add the 8' even though I’m just on a lake (a big one ill grant, but a lake all the same), should I jump for a strip-planked composite, or go somewhere else entirely, what should I do, what should i do?? p.s. Rig also computable with an oceanic lateen, or “Crab-claw” rig, lest that’s what i think it’s called.

A mechanism that moves in the opposite direction of the applied force?

I am building a camera rig, and I would like to be able to accomplish very fluid movements with it. I have seen all kinds of existing camera rigs, but they all seem relatively static in one way or another. Simple bi-directional movement is alright, but something capable of vertical, horizontal and rotational movement would be preferable. If you push downwards, the camera moves upwards - that kind of thing. Even a material that is semi-flexible would work, as a rod to attach the camera to that would provide some sort of resistance, and a position to snap back to. I'm not looking for the whole design, just a starting point if anyone has any ideas about something that already exists that sounds like what I'm saying.

Effects of Inductors Coupling?

This is a follow up post from this thread >> https://www.instructables.com/community/Guitar-Wah-Wah-Pedal-Help/ (It was about how to fix my Wah-Wah guitar pedal, it turns out the Inductor was not working, so I replaced it) I replaced a broken 500mh INDUCTOR in my guitar pedal with a new one. It works now. However, I am planning on keeping the broken inductor in my wah wah pedal (because it yielded a cool volume pedal sound). I want to rig up the circuit so that I can switch from from the GOOD conductor to the BAD conductor. My questions are: Will there be any major effects from having two inductors coupling? Should I be wary of the 'winding' of the coils? If so, what should I do in order to be consistent with the winding? And out of curiosity, how could I rig this up?  Here is the schematic >> http://www.voxamps.com/downloads/circuits/wahwah93.jpg 500mh Inductor = L1 I have 3 terminal DPST switch. This is how I imagine rigging it up: I'm thinking of having wires from the inductor terminals on the PCB wired to a terminal on the SWITCH, then to the INDUCTOR, and then back to the PCB. The same follows for the other (bad) inductor. If this is not clear, please let me know, or feel free to post a better way to rig this up. In summary for this last question How could I rig this circuit to switch between two inductors? Thanks.

How would I rig an old analog clock to light up LEDs to show the time? Answered

I was thinking of using the 10mm ultra-brights for the hour mark and the standard 5mm for the minutes. Should I connect them all to a common ground and use the hands as the "hots?" Should I use a plate-type contact; cause I feel that the post-type would interfere with the sweep of the hands. What kind of batteries should I use?

How to build a remotely activated spring-loaded glass-smashing special fx rig?

Hi all, I need to design/build a special fx rig that I can use to remotely break glass doors in a cabinet for a tv show. I've looked at the glass poppers sold at fx shops but they use squibs; this is a hidden camera prank show and the victim of the gag has to believe the glass smashed because they were singing in a high-pitched voice, so I can't use the squibs (the victim will hear them go off). Also, the glass is candy glass. I am imagining something like the hammer on a gun; something that I can cock and leave set in the cabinet, then perhaps pull a string to trigger it into hitting the glass. Anyone have better ideas? Many thanks, Damian
