Stone Rings

So i have a crush on this girl.  I jokingly proposed to her and we're "getting married".  But she wants a stone ring.  How the hell do i make one?  What should i use to cut it?  I have a shop full of woodworking tools at my great grandfather's, but i don't want to destroy any of his stuff.  If i can get this for her, she'll be super impressed.

Ring-A-Day

This has been going all year, but I just came across it via NOTCOT:   Colleen Baran's Ring a Day project is one surprisingly creative treat after another. The project is about ideas and fun more then commercial work. It's about the idea that feels most exciting that day. Some rings will be ephemeral and temporary made of fragile materials. Others will be carefully crafted for durability and meant for long term daily wear. These will be coming later in the year. They are experiments in line, shape & color. An exploration of ideas like a daily sketchbook. Some are quite serious and carefully planned, some are a little silly, some will take a couple minutes, others many, many hours. Most (so far) are made of recycled or alternative materials as diverse as felt, false eyelashes, cucumber facemasks, lipstick, repurposed elastic bands, twist ties, straws and tinfoil with carob. The rings are documented on Flickr - my favourite so far is the straw ring illustrated below.

Slip ring

I am looking to build a rotating electrical connector, better known (in the electrical world) as a slip ring. The basics (my layperson terms) would include a stationary ring (fed by a power source AC/DC) and a rotating ring having 2-4 connecting points being in direct contact with the stationary ring allowing for power to be supplied to moving (rotating) devices connected to the connection points of the rotating ring.

Ring Contest Question

I have a question regarding the ring contest. Did you have to actually make the ring or could you have designed it, planned out what went into it, created a mold model, and had a jeweler create the finished product from your design? I designed my wife's engagement ring with drawings and even a wax model but did not have the proper tools or materials to actually make it so a local jeweler put my design into reality and I critiqued it until it was exactly as I wanted. Does that count for this contest?

A Ring For The Less-Attentive

Hello, first off I'd like to apologize immediatly if this is in the wrong section. Personally, out of all the sections it seems to fit best here :) You see, my girlfriend has ADD (bless her) and seems to always be fidgeting around when there is nothing to preoccupy her attention. So what I am looking for is any worthy scouter to take on my challenge :D. That challenge is to make a ring!! A ring so amazing intricate or beautifully simple that it will hold anyone's attention and keep them from getting bored. The idea for this arose from these two sources: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSy5YrZ9xUs And this one: http://www.kinektdesign.com/ Would astound anyone but the price is far far to steep, not to mention the massive size of the ring itself.  So there is your challenge, essentially a ring for the bored. Good luck all! Sincerely, Ryan

Is that your ring phoning?

Here's half an idea - a ring that displays text messages. It might look like nothing more than a ring at first glance, but this finger-worn device can sync with your mobile phone. It has a vibratory alert and a tiny screen that shows caller ID, text messages, and meeting reminders from your mobile. Flip it open and it converts into a headset. In the image, the screen looks glued on, but I guess that it could easily be a small piece of epaper.  As for being an ear-piece, I can't see how it would end up large enough to be comfortable or practical, yet still start off small enough to wear as a ring. Now, if the some idea was expanded to a bangle, then an entire phone could be built into a bracelet small and slim enough to be discrete. Now the embarrassing bit: I got this story off MSN...

The Lost Ring ARG

We just sat in on our friend Jane McGonigal's SXSW talk on how life could be far more awesome and rewarding were it organized more like alternate reality games, and were lucky enough to get a peek into her new game, The Lost Ring. The concept is pretty neat: Ariadne woke up blindfolded in a corn maze outside of Johannesburg with no memory, Olympic-calibur athletic skills, and a tattoo bearing the words "trovu la ringon perditan" -- Esperanto for "find the lost ring." She sets out to find what is happening to her, and discovers others with similar stories. There's already a wiki, and the game will almost certainly spawn offshoot projects all over the net and physical world. Background info:The Lost Ring is a global alternate reality adventure created in partnership between McDonald's, AKQA and Jane McGonigal. Designed in collaboration with the IOC, The Lost Ring invites players from across the globe to join forces online and in the real world, as they investigate forgotten mysteries and urban legends of the ancient games. The Lost Ring recognizes McDonald's historic sponsorship of the Olympic Games, and brings the spirit of the Games to people around the world. It started a week ago and should run for around 6 months. Go check it out, and join up!

Gymnastic Rings mounting?

I'm trying to think of a good way to mount my wooden rings I made. I'm thinking of something like the design in the photo. Its made of 1" angle iron and square tubing and would be atached to a 12"x6" joist that is visible in my house. The metal is welded together Through the hole in the bottom  would put an eyebolt and bolt it in. I welded a nut to a large washer for the support under the tubing and I would use a washer and two nuts on top to help prevent it from loostening. I'm thinking of using lock tight on the nuts. Any suggestions? If I should post more views tell me and I'll render more views. I'm not going to be doing anything crazy, like giants or bails, mainly strength, like crosses and planches/?multicies?.

Vibrating Finger Ring Creation

I'm looking for someone to build me a finger ring that has some kind of vibration/impulse capability that is pre-set to vibrate at certain times and/or intervals throughout the day. I will create a website where the user enters in when, or at what durations, they want it to vibrate. This is then somehow sent to the ring and it vibrates accordingly.  Looks are not really important but not being bulky is desirable. Is this possible? Let me know your thoughts and cost estimates and I'll respond asap.  Thanks for reading.

Odd wedding ring materials?

I was thinking about getting a wedding ring in the future and i am not the kind of person who likes to be traditional. My girlfriend is worth everything to me so a ring that would be worth almost as much as her would be a diamond ring made out of osmium, iridium, osmiridium, or platinum. i know that these are all in the platinum family (group) but would any of these make good materials for a ring? i would like an unusual material that possibly has some cool properties (like osmium has a cool blue tint). P.S. i know that osmium when oxidized has a smell and is toxic (and will cause the skin to turn black) i also know that platinum is a "traditional" wedding ring material and therefore can be made into a ring but the others i am unsure about.

Custom made titanium ring

Hi, Im looking for advice on making a titanium ring for my girlfriend. I choose titanium because shes allergic to stainless steel.  I was thinking of buying a small 3x3 plate or so so I have room to make a few if I screw up. depending on thickness..? Idk what thickness to choose. Then I would need to drill out the inside, and figure out how to size it to her finger by her size.  Then I would have to just shape it somehow. sandpaper? idk. I doubt that but I dont have a lathe available..  so thats why Im here looking for advice, and then after shaping I need to use different compounds to buff and polish it right?

20385 LEDs in Olympic rings

They're 14 metres in height, have 20,385 individual LED lights and weigh 9,100 lbs. As part of the 2010 Winter Games' sustainability priorities, the lights in the display use energy efficient bulbs that consume 8.8 per cent of the electricity of equivalent incandescent bulbs. Here is the full article: http://yvrconnections.com/2009/05/yvr-gets-olympic-rings/ which includes a video.

SUSTAINABLE MAGAZINE NAPKIN RING

These napkin rings go well with the waffle coasters to create a set on the dining table. The colors of the magazines give it a bohemian charm. Finish the ring with lacquer for easy cleaning and durability.INSTRUCTIONS: www.projectfidgetyfingers.blogspot.comMeasure the length and the circumference of a toilet roll.Fold magazine sheets into quarters. Once cut into quarters, fold it into half and then 1/3 and ½ again. Measure the width of the strip and match it according too the circumference of the toilet roll. It should match, giving some allowance of the thickness of the strips. Work out the thickness of the napkin ring. We have measured out 1/3 of the toilet roll, including allowance for the thickness of the strip.Use glue stick to stick the strips onto the toilet roll for placement and ease of weaving. Weave and tuck loose ends into the square weaves.Finish with lacquer.

Can anyone identify the insignia or badge on this Onyx ring and what it represented?

This ring was part of some jewelry that belonged to my mother, born in Dallas, Texas in 1910.  Her family (mostly Presbyterian) and ancestors lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota and Britain.  I wondered if it was a Christian Church or school, because of the cross and candelabra. It is small and was likely a lady's ring.

Anyone know a good ring commissioner?

Well, I've checked for people that'll make a "Latnok Ring" and they're too expensive, mainly because they don't work with stainless steel... Does anyone know a company/person that'll make me a Latnok ring for about $100-$200? Sorry if this is a repeat question, but it wasn't quite well answered... maybe this time it will.

Making Diy Ring Light. Help?

Ok at the moment i'm working on a Diy Ring Light.   I will try to be as detailed as possible.   The light source i'm using is from an old LED light box that has over 204 leds in a array  17x12 matrix  I am using a Old circle fan outer shell for the ring shape and i already made the outer casing. My problem is i am trying to wire these leds off of the matrix and in separate rows.  My plan is wire these leds in a circle and connect the ends to the LED light box controller.  Basically take the box led shape and make it into a circle.   At the moment the leds are attached to the board.  I have desoldered all of them almost and i have figured out the positive led and negative led.    As long as i wire the positive leds in a row and negative in its own row with paper clips and then connect it back up to the positive wire and negative wire on the controller i should have it working? Is there something else i need to do?   It will be powered by the wall because the controller has its own dc input and i have the correct power supply for it.       I will provide pictures if needed.   i hope this is enough info to help you guys help me.   Thanks.

Color Changing LED Ring - Help

Hello, I've searched most of the LED Instructables section looking for something I'd like to make. I'm just looking into making something very basic. Simply put, I'm looking to build a round "coaster" type object. I'd like it to have a few coloured LED's that are in a circular shape but will fade in/out and mix colours together. Picture having this under a glass object and it's purpose is to light up the object with different colour patterns and such just for looks. If anyone could help me out with this, it would greatly be appreciated. I'm just starting to get into LED things. I can wire the LED's to all be on, but that's not what I want.

Diy o-ring with glue-gun

For emergencies, but not only: make your own o-ring. use a hot glue gun and some soft glue-stick. look for a round object more or less the size of the o-ring you need. form a steady bead of hot glue around it. wait for it to set. peel it off. if necessary: smoothen down the edges somehow (sanding-paper, file, etc). feedback appreciated. thank you.
