RIP Subscribe Button.

Has anybody else noticed that the "Subscribe" button has now become a little "Follow" button on Instructables? I mean seriously, Twitter rip-off anyone? Why did they even change it in the first place, it was perfectly fine as it was. How do you all feel about this (and all the other Instructables changes too?)

RIP Tobias Wong

Tobias Wong passed away early Sunday morning, May 30. He was 35. This is terrible news as he was a wonderful creator. If you don't know the name, you've probably seen or read about some of his creations. One of which is the Sun Jar which stores energy during the day and uses it to power an LED at night. It has become a classic project here on Instructables. I am always interested in seeing cool new items that people make and for me Tobias always stood out as someone who could consistently make you think and laugh by making you see something in a new way. Whenever his name would pop up I would eagerly check it out to see what he had made this time. So when I saw the headline with his name and the years of his life with that sad number "2010" as the final punctuation my heart sank. I never even got to say "thank you" in person. If you've never heard of Tobias Wong or only know a couple of the things he's done, I urge you to check out more of his creations. It's worth it.

simple explanation about ripping and burning a movie?

Have mac 10.5.8 . paid 51$ to DVD cloner for mac. these people can't offer a clear explanation of how to use their product. Neither does Mac. just look above for the question. I don't know if... do I have to use their copier to put the movie on a hard disk? they don't say. All i know is that each attempt to explain their product gets more garbled. this all has to be coming from India!

I GOT RIPPED OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so i decided i would get the Motorized madness ball machine. it had 2004 parts, chain links, gears, and a motor. i thought that would be a jackpot.but i was wrong, as most of the parts were those tiny knex parts that we all hate. there was only one bag of real knex and a bag of chain links and gears with the longer rods. the 5 balls were also of good use. so, what was the best knex set you ever bought?

Why do you have those crappy ads on the right side bar?

This stuff is pure crap. I got ripped off by one of them.  "Sun City Mom discovers shocking method for erasing wrinkles. Dermatologists hate her... " The funny thing is that Sun City AZ where I live is a senior community. This kind of adverts make you look bad and only add to the bad rap that the internet has. Clean up your site. I do love the rest of the work you have done on it. "Bad with the good" you may say but this stuff is at the other end of the spectrum from what you are trying to do with your site. lol Michael Townsend

Australian Workplace Agreements

Just a question..... In Australia we have a few new changes in laws regarding work hours.... One of which is that an employer can MAKE you work up to 48 hrs in the week... This would be fine if you were paid for them but.... with these changes employers only have to pay you for 38 of those hrs and can give you "time in lou" > Time off for the other 10.... So basically I am forced to work extra hrs so I can have that same time off at their discretion....?? Does this seem a bit weird to the rest of the world or are you seeing similar changes too?

Rip-offs from designers

We've all seen it, and for a lot of people, it's why we're here: simple, neat, easily-executed ideas presented as high art or grand design, and sold at jaw-dropping prices. The latest example I've come across is these coat-hooks.  Cut from brass and stainless steel, they are going to be "launched" at the London Design Festival but Visuallyod. A launch event.  For coat hooks? Cut and bent from a bit of brass sheet? I shudder to think of the price as well - there's no price on their own website, but they charge £490 ($750) for some sticks cast in pottery and tied together with old string. Anyway, rant over (for now).  What examples of rip-off design have you seen?  What examples have you copied? EDIT: Sudden thought - even if you haven't made them yourselves, what are your favourite examples of Instructables recreating designer rip-offs at budget prices?

RIP Sir Patrick Moore

The greatest British populariser of astronomy and space science, Sir Patrick Moore died today at 89. I would suggest that nearly 100% of British astronomers were influenced by Moore and his TV programme, The Sky at Night - of which, Sir Patrick was the longest serving presenter of any TV series anywhere. It is hard to imagine any more iconic figure in science media than Patrick Moore. A great loss.

Gizmodo rips off Instructables?

Gizmodo recently posted about vodka-infused gummi-bears, but presented it as if it was their own idea. I tried to leave a comment to point out that the process was posted here, nearly three years ago, but I was informed that my post was "spam" because it was "too short", and "contained too many links".  How is one link "too many"?  I tried again, typing a lot more, and including no links at all, yet that comment mysteriously did not appear, either. So, I checked the FAQ, to see if I'd accidentally broken some rule, and I found it:  according to their FAQ, Gizmodo "only approve the comments we love". To me, only allowing comments that say nice things about the site, and preventing plagiarism (or mistakes) being highlighted, is censorship, and cowardly. Rant over - there doesn't seem to be any way to contact Gizmodo with actual criticism.

Let Er Rip guys.

I just put a new Forum up on my server. I want to see what it's breaking point is and also would find it handy to get ANY feedback from it, I know there will be a couple things astrew on my forum, but for the most part it's your average SMF forum, with a little bit of work done to it to set up the settings to my likings and changed the theme.I know there are a malicious few that will stumble across my forum link (not necessarily members on this website), but I welcome the testing of my server's security, as I also need to know of any leaks. Also, aside from the testing aspect of my forum, I welcome new users, as I would like to have a user-base of more than 5-6 people, just makes things more exciting ya-kno? I plan to make computer utilities accessible to members and guests, however all other downloads are off limits to guests, you must register, although I haven't really got much to download, there are a couple things to see in there so far.I thank any one of you's who takes time to look this over for me.However, don't try any funny stuff with my ftp access or the rest of my system, as it's set up fairly well and tight and you'll most likely get yourself automatically banned, the Apache, mysql, and php however, I do not think are completely secure, like I said, do test it out.

Agua-luna solar panel ripoff

I bought a manual from Aqua-luna.org about making solar panels. I've been misled and ripped off. The first two solar panel technologies are not viable for home power generation. The screen printed PV panels may be. There were listings of materials and a copy of a patent application along with some hand written notes. Not much else. There's absolutely no way that a person with electrical and fabrication skills could make printed PV panels from this document. I tried there msn address, no response. I posted a message in their forums, no response. Beware.

Spare parts overpricing - anyone familiar with the concept?

I recently had the joy of getting one of the machines I use at work fixed. We already knew a valve was no longer working but I did not expect the source to be a motor with a gearbox on it. I kept the faulty part to check the internals - just out of curiosity. Now mind you that after little online I sear I found all the components of this drive: 1. A Mabuchi RS-555 motor - priced at under $10 2. A 3 stage planetary gearbox with a sproket for a chain drive - all up and in top quality around $250 with much cheaper options available... 3. A mounting plate - just an aluminium square with 4 holes in it. 4. A standard connector plug with 6cm of cable. Even if I consider that there are only 2 manufacturers for this sort of machinery wordwide I fail to see how a price of very close to $1000 is justified for this part. But let's not brag about politics but design instead: The gearbox is totally over-engeneered for the task and could deliver about 15 times the torque required to moved the valve even if it would be blocked. And against the technicians assurance the drive failed because of us forcing it to be used to often (ROFL) I had to realise the culprit is the design and way it is put together. Despite being all hardened steel there was basically no grease left inside the gearbox, I was not even able to turn it from the motor side by hand! As it is a fully sealed unit I highly doubt the grease just disappeared because most of the metal parts were bone dry, the rest only had a smidge of grease hard like wax left on it. And although the motor has a similar laser engraving than a real Mabuchi motor of the same type it has no ball bearings and judging by the free space bushes of only 4mm lenght, maybe less. One broke off, the other still had about 2.5mm left. I could argue the dry gearbox caused a constant overload of the motor, which is evident by the thermal marks on the rotor but I never had a motor with te brushes broken off the metal clip holding them. The next day I reported my findings to the boss and he said he might have another one somewhere from a previous repair and wanted me to check it as well. Needless to say the faul was identical. This system is being replaced on average every 18 months at a total cost of close to $1500. One third of this is for labour, other spares and general service but the amount for the motor drive is always a sting. Now to really funny part: After my boss had a long and frustrating phone call with our service company it turns out we not allowed to use any parts other then what the manufacturer supplies. Ok, truth told, we are of course allowed to do so but if the service company notices non-genuine parts they have to report it and this automatically cancels our service agreement with the manufacturer. Only one company produces the stuff, only one company in the country has the service contract with them - you see the circle? LOL I found a supplier that could offer a similar motor drive that would only require the original mounting plate and sproket. Priced at just $300 and with a 2 year warranty it sounds tempting especially if you consider that is only for the gearbox and the motor has 3 years. Of cours we won't do it and have to suck it up, so just for laughs a few other spares for this machine that I found in old bills and their price on Ebay for the same part or one of better quality on the right: Various microswitches:                                  25 - 88                       0.20 - 4 Temperatur sensor:                                              129                       1.20 Temp sensor with 30cm heat proof cable:       149                       3.50 Stainless steel sheet metal screw:                        6.50                 0.40 if ordered more than 10 Main switch (simple flip):                                        99                      1.20 Stainless steel screening fliter:                             114                      8.30 And that is just for the mechanical and electrical stuff, if I would go into the plumbing with little stainless steel parts and ruber seals some here might end up with sore muskles from all the laughing... Do have similar equippment that could be serviced better for a fraction of the cost but can't because of similar restrictions? Mind you that I am not talking about warranty stuff here as the machine is far over this already... If someone wants to see how much damage a broken off peice of carbon will cause in the long run let me know. But be aware that I already cleaned away most of the black dust before you complain it looks too clean - I did not want that stuff everwhere ;)

Is your local shop ripping you-off?

I was vaguely interested in wholesale prices for shop products, and managed to find this price-list. The wholesale price is WSP, RSP I guess is the Recommended Sale Price (I think there must be tax in there somewhere), and whatever POV stands for would be the margin. If you think someone's expensive: either they've got an expensive supplier, or you don't know WSP, or they are making the most of you. (But remember, 8-'till-laters work hard to earn a living, they do need some margin) P & H price-list - as a major distributor these prices will be around the "good as one can get" mark. E.g. Haagen-Dazs 100ml £23.99 for 24x = £1 per tub        Hovis Soft 800g £1.14 ea        Cheesestrings Cheddar 21g £9.24 for 24 = £0.385 ea        "What not butter" 1Kg £18.14 for 12, £1.51 ea Or just marvel at what crap you can stock your shop with.... It's only a bit of searching, you could check your prices (different country) by searching specifically differently. (Look for who is delivering stuff) I do remember a local shop which was regarded as a rip-off to the extent some of my friends would steal stuff by way of compensation... not much though, Pot-Noodle here & there... How do I rip sounds from older games? Answered

I'm attempting to create a content pack for a Minecraft mod, and need old gun sounds. Anyway, I remembered an older game (not DOS era) game, Oregon Trail, and thought I could rip the sounds out of it, since it had some nice gun sounds from the hunting sections. Anyway, usually this wouldn't be a problem, but that's only if the sound files are either .wav or .raw (which I can expand using audacity), but ... well... as you can see, I don't have anything to work with here. If someone can point me to the proper file, I can probably extract the sounds from there (I have another windows PC I can use if necessary)  Note that the folder labeled "CD" is a direct copy of the game CD. Cheers! ~Alt

Req for help with RIAA Eq (ripping LPs to HDD)

. I'm trying to dub/rip some LPs to digital and I think I have most of what I need (turntable, cables, sound card, capture software, encoders, pre-amp w/o eq) but I can't seem to find anything to handle the RIAA eq. I have an old stereo with phono preamp/eq, but it is not exactly hi-fi. As far as I can tell, all I need is a filter/plugin between the capture sw and encoder, but I can't seem to find anything. Any ideas? . Does anyone know what the shelf-life is for phono cartridges/stylii? I have some high quality carts/stys (Stanton, Ortofon) from the '80s, but I'm afraid the fulrums may have deteriorated. Are the carts/stys sold for DJ/disco use any good? . Anybody know of an Ancient Rippers site? On most of the sites I've found, vinyl is not in the vocabulary.

What is a good way to strengthen (prevent rips) craft foam?

I spend a lot of time making LARP/Prop weapons and I have a particular sword that has a very weak guard (That's this https://www.instructables.com/id/Ninjato-30-Alt-Z/). I end up fixing it after every rehearsal, because the foam rips (See the pictures and you'll know exactly how that happens). I'm looking for some sort of spray or paint-on substance/concoction that I can use to make this guard stronger. I use foam because it's a bendy substance, so something that will harden and then crack if it is bent is not an option. I want to make the foam tougher, but not stiff or brittle. Anyone have any ideas?

my xbox keeps turning itself off every 2-5 minutes.

Every time i turn my xbox on it turns itself off after like 2-5 minutes, im thinking that this is microsoft ripping people off by making them send their xboxes in every 3 months to get it fixed for like £40.00. and now it keeps turning itself on every 10 seconds then off again straight after. in short im thinking of buying a ps3 and a word to the wise everybody, dont buy an xbox, its a rip off, it will break down every couple of months. the amount of problems that a 360 has is endless, the rede ring, it scratches disks, xbox live costs way too much and a wifi adaptor does too, you cannot install any other operating ststem on it and you cannot play a game without the disk. 2-3 of my games have been cracked all the way through by my 360, buying it was one of my worst decisions i have made so far. on the other hand ps3 has wifi built in free online and you can play games without the disk. you can also install any operating system on it.

curtain rack got ripped out of plaster wall. Can i fix put it back in?

Hi Recently, My curtain rack in my bedroom came out while i was moving the curtain, i was pulling down a little bit, and apparently that was enough to rip the rack out of the plaster. Ive attached photos. Because theres another rack holder, ide rather not patch up the hole as that will mean also patching up the other hole made when i remove the other rack. Is it possible to securely put the hook back in with a glue, resin ,foam or something?

How do I charge a Tomtom one xl without using USB?

The USB socket has been ripped off my old Tomtom one xl. It has a separate charge plug but I can't find a plug for it anywhere. I'd like to charge it but can't use the USB. It ripped off the motherboard completely so can't solder it back on.
