Rotational Charger?

Any ideas how one could transform rotational movement into usable energy?  I want to attach a little radio device to a tire and have that device charge a little battery when the wheel rotates so that it can transmit information (i.e. rpm).  Was thinking of using a small Nordic radio and accelerometers to transmit data.

Name this thingamajig

Hi I'm trying to locate or build something I don't know the name of and searching around hasn't proved helpful, perhaps somebody here could put a name to it so I at least know what I'm searching for?  It's a mount which allows something to rotate  horizontally a full 360 degrees  continuously (similar to the column rotation on a tripod) however the object to be rotated needs cables passed to it through the mount unhindering the rotation - some sort of contact connection?  Ideally I want the mount to have a powered rotation but putting a name to this would get me on the right track. Uploaded image is not rotated

I uploaded several photos for my Instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/Game-board-for-Settlers-of-Catan/). All were taken with my iPhone. One is in portrait mode. When I preview the photo with Irfanview on my PC it is correctly oriented. When I view the photo on Instructables it is rotated 90 degrees to the left. I infer that the iPhone puts some kind of rotation command in the file. Irfanview correctly handles this while the Instructables site does not. Cheers, Jim Schrempp

Rotating Backdrop for Video

Hi All: I'm looking for ideas on creating my own rotating backdrop for a video that I'll be creating for my book. I will be drawing/painting a city skyline onto some type of paper or another and then want to be able to have it on a continuous 'scroll'. (Think a reel-to-reel player type of setup except using manual power.) Any thoughts?

Rotating stacking mechanism

Rotating Lighthouse with LEDs?

I bought some LED strip lights  They let me cut them apart in bunches of 3.  I was hoping i could cut about 8 to 12 of these 3 Led sections and create a led lighthouse.  I just want to have a way for them to cycle on and off so it looks like it is rotating around.  I am going to stand the pieces up and down all around the lighthouse light area.  But i cant find any instructions on doing something like this.  Each three led section would need to turn itself on and off in sequence.  Or 2 or 3 can be on at once if it is easier just so it looks like it is rotating around it.  I would like it to go slowly around like a lighthouse Does anyone have any idea on how to accomplish something like this.  These new strip lights are very bright i was surprised how bright they are.

Rotating/revolving bookcase

I wonder if you could offer any advice on this idea of mine.  I’m looking to design/make a bookshelf that revolves.  Like this www.youtube.com/embed/XkYvXMYnTxc?list=UU_UK-sPqzXj10PvfUCf39lg TV on one side and books on the other.  The setup I want to make isn’t the same as this, but the mechanism would be exactly the same.  Any ideas on how to DIY this?  ​The space I have to do it is 16" deep, 39" wide and about 50" high I've searched around and can't find any info on where to buy the brackets/arms/runners that may be needed.  There are also wall beds that do the same thing on a much larger scale - but the process in principal is the same. 3 axis rotation system

Hello everyone! I was hoping someone here with better understanding of engineering or just a fresh take on the problem can help me out. Im working on this art project where I have a metal ball, aproximatelly the size of a basket ball, and i wanted to make it rotate continuously on a stand, in a way that all sides of the ball were shown eventually. I've thought about this 3 axis sytem where each axis would rotate in turns to keep the ball rolling in diferent directions. Basically its like the insides of an analog mouse where the ball would rotate the gears and give the input of the location of the pointer, except here the gears should rotate the ball. I've been trying to build something close to that with some K'NEX and a simple rotation engine that came with it but im not getting nowhere. I thought of building the gears myself but im finding it hard to come up with a plan. What would the gears be shaped like? What size? what distance between them? Even with trial and error would take me forever @.@ Anyways, any input, ideas, comments apreciated, Thx!

Advice for newbie - rotational art?

Hi there, A few years ago I picked up a lovely ornament - a crystal ball contained within a conical spiral wire thing.  When suspended you could manually spin the wire to create the illusion of the crystal ball falling (very poor explanation but hopefully you get it?). Anyway - I've always wanted to automate this, so that you can hang it up in the conservatory and enjoy a nice cup of tea whilst this thing continues to spin. My simple idea was to have the ornament hung on a basic motor (solar powered / using a solar powered battery would be even better). And that's where my idea stops.  I've searched online and remain baffled by the plethora of motors and accessories that I might need. In very simple terms can anyone advise what: electric motor I need (the ornament is probably around 1kg, I'd like it to spin at around 60 rpm?) whether I can power it via solar (ideally to charge a battery so that I can have it working at night when there is no sun!) Any other helpful tips? First time on this place - looks incredibly interesting and fun. Thanks in advance, Jamie

Ceiling Fan for a Theatrical Production?

My theater group is doing Guys and Dolls for our spring production, and our director wants to have ceiling fans in a few of the scenes. Is there any way to create prop fans that can hang from a fly rail and rotate, but without being electrically powered? Thanks in advance!

continuous to step rotation in legos?

I have a thing that rotates in lego, it has one revolution per 5 minutes. I want it to be connected to something else so that the other thing has one rotation per hour. But it has to rotate in steps, so after every five minutes it has to rotate 1/12 revolution at one time. Can anybody think of a good mechanism? It won't work to make only one pin on the five minute ring so it only ticks the other gear one pin per rotation, that would go too slow because with one revolution per five minutes the transition would take too long. It has to be a short moment. thanks

Pin-Pressions/ Rotation Sensor

I'm trying to build a sensitive pinpression device: one that can see 3d digital images. The device would be able to read, record and organize the depth of each pin. I think the first problem to overcome is figuring out a cheap way to measure pin depth. I think it will be best to do this with rotation sensors. Does anyone know how to build or where to buy cheap rotation sensors?

How to reverse the rotation of a vacuum cleaner motor? Answered

I'm possession of a vacuum cleaner engine and I'm trying to reverse its rotation..So far I've tried reversing it's polarity with no success but I looked up the 2 ICs on it's chip and it has a555 timer and a 7-stage binary counter.(see: http://www.standardics.nxp.com/products/hef/datasheet/hef4024b.pdf)There are only 2 wires running to the engine from the chip so I presume there is no feedback.Furthermore there is a potentiometer hooked up to both the ICs which regulates the speed of the engine (and no AD convertor as far as I can tell) so the voltage changes the PWM output as the engine is rated 230V.All ideas are welcome =)p.s.(I can't supply you with pictures right now, sorry)

Pinterest image rotated, bug?

Anyone having issues with images rotating when they try to share in Pinterest? When I try to share, some of mine have their images rotated 90 degrees. Attached a screen shot. Anyone know a solution to this? I emailed support to see if they have some suggestions.

Rotating Antennae Wiring Question? Answered

Ok, something I've been thinking about for awhile.  Say you have an antennae/radar dish/etc that rotates 360°. Naturally, you have wires running up to the antennae connecting it to the rest of your circuit/broadcasting/receiving device. How do you prevent the wires from wrapping around the antennae and causing it to stop or causing the wires to break? I suppose you could reverse the antennae every so often to prevent this, but there must be a better way. Also, I figured you could have some sort of connection that rotated around, but it seemed that a rotating connection could be problematic if debris or something got in the way. It also doesn't seem like a very solid way to connect the two devices together.  Not actually building something here, just a curiosity. Thanks!

How can I create a sign that has components that rotate based on a persons proximity?

I want to create a sign that is 48"x 24" that is broken down into 4" squares. I want each square to rotate or flip so that one side has a message and on the other side is an entirely different sign. I want the squares to rotate at random so that they full flip to one side or the other.  The rub is the following. I want the sign to be spaced so that at a given distance (300 feet) the sign has one message. As the person walks closer to the sign, it is triggered so that the squares flip and a new independent sign is seen on the other side.  I dont care  about material or cost (generally) I was thinking along the lines of the old train station signs in Europe that flipped over as trains arrived. However I I want the sign to be triggered by a individual getting closer or further away. SO  that if the person walks 10 feet closer to the sign, perhaps 3 more squares are flipped around, and if they go back in distance to where the started, the squares would flip back to the original point. I was thinking either passive radar or sonar, or lasers across points of embarkation.  Please I need help!

How to determine which potentiometer I need for this project? Answered

Hi all,  I am building a laptop cooling pad with external power supply, and I would like to include a potentiometer so I could control the speed of the fan rotation. However, I am not sure about the resistance of the potentiometer. I am using the adapter from an old HP printer. What would happen if you stopped a galaxies rotation?

I mean a total complete standstill, every dust particle and bit of matter stopped moving rotationally in relation to the galactic center. Would the gravitational effects drag everything to the center if it stopped rotating over a few million years or would everything fly off in a straight line if it stopped instantaneously and eventually fall back into the center?

How do I make a chain rotating around 2 gears complete a single rotation in exactly 60 seconds?

Hello everyone, I'd like to start off by declaring I am new to this website and have little understanding of technology as of yet. If my question has been answered before I apologize, but I haven't been able to find it in the forum. I've recently started tinkering with 3D printing as a bit of a hobby and am trying to make items that are more than just odd looking. One of the things I'd like to create is the following clock found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S2DSteBLDY Now this clock is made with Lego and its creator has labeled it as a 'proof of concept' as the 'lift' that delivers the ball, which should represent a minute, actually only counts ~55 seconds. For an actual clock I'd like it to have 60 seconds per minute and I am wondering if I can calulate the specs before I spend money on printed prototypes that dissapoint.. So using 2 Cogwheels/gears with a Chain that picks up a ball every 60 seconds (so a full chain rotation) based on an electric motor. I've found several 3-9v electric motors, but all seem to have rotations in the thousands whereas I'd expect to need like a few dozen rotations per minute(?). The clock I am trying to make is smaller than 20cm and I'd like for the chain to span a max 16cm in the final clock. Summed up: 1) How do I decide the right Gear? size/teeth? 2) What Electric motor/power source would suit a very low amount of rotations? 3) How can I time the motor/gears to complete a cycle in exactly 1 minute? How to do a rats & diggers proof Chicken Tractor?

'Cause if I simply put chicken wires in the ground they cannot scratch off the ground, wich is a quite important part of the 'cleaning process' we look for, isnt it? i eard about staking fences on the ground laying 50cm all around to make long and difficult way for the rats to dig under And why not even sharping the stakes to be nastier... ? But if someone have more simple ideas, for more easy ;ooving and maintenance... A good challenge! thanks

Learned something today, i thought it was just me but, has anyone noticed how time seems to have sped up in the last few years? well thats because it has. December 2005 an earthquake actually sped up the Earth's rotaion. Kinda freaky, eh?

Need help making a Rotating Massager

Need help making a Rotating Massager with  a LONG HANDLE. We can get 'vibrating' massager with long handle but not able to get a rotating massager, for back etc. Need to have a high power rotating massager for body massage, but cannot get one in the market. Appreciate if we can make with materials available in the hardware store etc. The  motor should run with simple 230V AC supply like ordinary massagers do. Any help greatly appreciated.

DC MOTOR ROTATION problem with ARDUINO !!

Hey there ,i have a simple problem in my controlling motor with arduino project that i send 5v to it at the top of the code but many times it gives a very small incomplete rotation (a small step i mean ) and stops the code not allowing to complete it , if i give a hand help to rotate it rotates properly and some times without help . so how to make it rotate without hand help ? and what is the idea ? thanks .(i am using l293d)

linear input to control a rotating servo? Answered

Im trying to build a circuit in which an input uses linear motion to control a rotating servo. the servo rotates clockwise/counterclockwise, and the input should have 3 inputs. turning the servo clockwise, turning the servo counterclockwise, and a neutral option so the servo doesn't have to always move; the neutral would be between the to rotation inputs. The closest form of an input I've found so far is a sliding potentiometer since it is controlled by linear motion. If there's a better input that can have those 3 inputs i'd love to know.

Idea for eccentric rotational sealed couple.

 I had this idea trying to seal this gaddamned ethanol system. (The vaseline grease gasket works perfectly as long as the shaft doesn't move, after ten minutes of rotation, it starts leaking)For the sake of expedience I'm currently going with a different option, but Ithink this one's actually better and will come back to it when I getthe chance.I don't know how self explanatory the animation is, but basically itconverts rotation into eccentric rotation/motion and then back again.Since the circular housing between the two shafts isn't spinning assuch, it can be sealed with a rubber sleeve. The system is thereforcompletely sealed. I've tried it and it does work, with lowresistance, but tends to wobble a little and the two shafts can getout of phase. Some help with camera tilt/rotating?

I am trying to make my own Pan and tilt timelapse device, to use with my camera (such as an Emotimo TB3). I want the design to be pretty feasible, but I want this to be fairly professional (in case I can market the idea.... idk about that but maybe I might be able to at some point). The problem with my design is that I want it to be pretty small and lightweight, so having the camera mount above the head seems like a good idea - (like this) However-that takes the camera away from the axis of rotation, increasing the strain on the motor (not a huge problem), but my main concern is that having the camera rotate off-center from the axis would cause issues, say, if the rig was used for gigapixel photography.  The other option is to mount the camera in line with the axis of rotation, but that causes a much larger design (which would look somewhat like this) So from someone who knows more about cameras than I, If I took a camera and used it in gigapixel photography (which would be the rigs second use), would having the camera rotate out of axis create problems in stitching, etc??

Randomly rotate entries in contest pages.

Here's a suggestion for how Instructables are displayed when viewing contest pages. It seems to me that all of the top-rated Instructables get all the face time at the contest's main page, while others get pushed to the back. If you're like me and have little time during breaks at work to spend time on the site, then often you don't get past that first page. Thus other entries further back, which may be just as good, never get viewed (or rated, or commented, or voted for). I suggest that at the top level, all of the entries on a contest page should be completely randomized each time the page is refreshed. There should still be the option to sort based on views, ratings or votes, but none of these should be the default.

Rotating Powered Display for GEEK swag

OK, Ill admit it, I'm a nerd.  I'm a Star Wars fan, and I got a new den that I want to geek out. I have a museum-quality X-wing fighter that I want to display on a counter top (&&&).  The piece has a display base, and a acrylic post that the model sits on - and through which three wires go up into the model and illuminates the outer engines, and numerous cockpit fiber-optic display bits.  It is uber-cool to look at in the dark. 8-) But I want to fab a custom display base that ROTATES so the model does a slow 360 revolution over, say, a minute or so.  But I also want to KEEP the lights. So, my puzzle is this.. How can I fab POWER RINGS, so that my model can display its lights as it revolves? -Or- Is there any way I can hack some kind of cheapo commercial wireless power conduction thing, so that I dont really NEED hard wires at all.  I can rig some rechargeable battery pack onto the rotating display base, and something that transmits the power on the table-top base (that doesnt rotate).  To be clear, the motor that does the rotation OF the base I can wire directly to the wall, But for the LEDs built into the model, I figure I need maybe 40mW of DC power that I want transferred to the batteries on the top to juice the model while turned on. I get this idea from my Wii wireless controller recharger.  I only have to put the controllers onto a special plate plugged in to the wall when not being used, and they recharge.  With this, SOMEHOW, power is getting to the batteries in the charger *without* being directly wired to the charging adapter. Anyway, since everyone on this site is a genius, I know the can give me an idea or two. Help with modifying a servo for continuous rotation?

I want to build a robot with arduino and for the motors I was going to use some servos that I could modify for continuous rotation.  So, I picked up 2 cheap ones at radioshack.  I opened them up and I can get to the gears by removing the top part and I can get to the back of the circuit board by taking off the bottom.  But the circuit board is soldered in so I can't take it out to get to the potentiometer. I tried desoldering the connections to the motor but there seems to be more joints to desolder before I can take out the circuit board completely. And I don't want to desolder every joint and then have to solder them again when I need to put them back together.  So has anyone modified these radioshack servos and can tell me how to get tho the potentiometer? Or can anyone tell me if there is a way to modify them without getting to the potentiometer? Thanks.

Rotating a simple DC motor really slowly (1 rotation per 2 hours)?

This is to rotate a bike chain on a small cog. After doing some research, I came across a component called a Pulse Width Modulator. Would this be suitable for turning a simple DC motor at 1 rotation per 12 hours(EDIT: I meant 1 rotation per 2 hours, not 1 every 12 hours)? Or, would it only get me to a certain point before I need to use gear ratios to achieve my ideal revs? This really is a budget project so nothing too fancy.  Thanks

Gearbox Sharpener for knex

NOTE THIS IS A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE ONE I MADE LOOKING AT THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE! IT WAS INTENDED AS A GEAR BOX BUT I ALSO TURNED IT INTO A SHARPENER AND A CHAIN SAW!!! It is hand cranked so... yeahThis is a knex sharpener tool that uses gear ratios to spin the rod at high speeds faster then a large yellow gear to small blue or grey gear ratio which is a 1/5 rotation ratio, for this gearbox though you achieve a magnificent 1/32 rotation ratio. One spin of the cog or yellow gear or starting gear whatever = end rotationWhen spinning at high speeds use a knife or sand paper to refine the sharpness of your rod to a dangerous needle if needed, or you just want to clean up a bad cut job from a pencil sharpener or knife cutter? This gearbox will smoothen out our refine your knex rod... NOTE THIS CAN SHARPEN THE ROD SO SHARP THAT IT IS DEADLY... How to mod a web cam for making it rotate?

I want to have my web cam mounted at a specific place in my room and control the web cam rotation using  the USB interface and some program on my pc. I was thinking of having the web cam to be mounted on a USB rocket launcher sort of thing, but it would be great if i i find an instructable which tells me how to do this using a few stepper motors which i have from my old printers. Specially i would love if a stepper motor control system through USB port is provided.

change rotation speed | standard clock part

Hi all (not sure if this is the right place to post such a question): is there an easy way to speed up a standard clock module part? (please see attached JPG picture). - would like it to turn 3 times faster. - can add any extra external circuit - can increase the voltage i.e. 2 x AA instead of one i know v. little about electronics. Also important to know how this will affect the power consumption.... thanks

How does this rotation control mechanism work? Answered

I've been trying to figure out a good technique to control the motor rotation in a split-flap display. I've found two methods that I want to compare. One is with a NEMA8 stepper motor (I want to try to keep things small and easy to replicate), the other technique is with a method I've only seen in one place, and I'm not exactly sure what's going on. You can see the video here. From what I gather, they have a DC Motor, that controls two discs. The right hand disc acts as your zero reference, and the left references each flap in the split-flap display.  I can faintly see a red light flashing that I think is on the left hand connector, that flashes every time a groove in the wheel spins past. The right hand wheel only has one groove in it, and when it's facing straight down, you'll see the LED turn on. I imagine the LED is turning on to let the programmer know that that sensor is picking up the groove, but I don't think it's the sensor. I also think those grooves are super important to the sensing, but I don't know how. I know how ball mice work, but those require a IR emitter/receiver on each side of the wheel. I can't see that here (though it could be hidden). So my question is, how does this work? Or, if it's a better question, what is the simplest/cheapest way to get precision accuracy (and the ability to zero if things shift out of place) out of a DC motor without programming the stopping points? Any help is greatly appreciated.

3 Axis Rotating Flight Simulation Rig

I have currently started building a 3 axis rotating Flight simulation rig that can simulated any 3D motion with a pilot inside the main cabin in control. I know the project needs a lot of disciplines working together (Steel design-mechanics-electrical-electronics-control-programming) So I assembled a team of engineers who got interested in the idea but we are not all highly experienced and the issue is new to all of us. So far we managed to design the rig it self as in steel design area. when we started moving along to the next phase which is the mechanical parts and joints we faced a lot of issues regarding the weight and balance of the rigs. The attached image is for a flight simulator done by a company in Russia. We have great ideas for improving that design and building our own non expensive simulator. I didn't post our full design model done in solid works cause it's not yet perfected. All I asking is that , if there is any one out there willing to help us share the knowledge or has a bit of experience in the subject, or wants to join our collaborate work, please don't hesitate to contacts us. Two rotating discs, synced and remote controlled.

I realized that I change the angle of my speakers many times a day and it gets really cumbersome. To use my time better, I thought that I'd be nice to have motorized rotating discs under each speaker, wired so that I could adjust their angle from a simple remote controller on my desktop. This would be because if there's a program, the speaker angles would always remain in sync in relation to one another, and because sometimes the speakers are actually located a bit inconveniently in terms of getting near them to adjust the angle manually.  Take a look at the attached image. I can't get that stupid image uploader to work, it uploads but doesn't keep the file, so here goes:  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31684214/Speakers.jpg Before you start criticizing it, don't: The point of the image is to demonstrate a principle. It doesn't tell anything about the room that the furniture is in. It isn't in scale. The sound fields of the speakers aren't trying to portray reality accurately, they're just there to make a point. Everything in the image is a rough sketch and its purpose is to make explaining easier.  As you see, the situation is that sometimes I sit at the desk, sometimes at the back of the room. If I keep the speakers pointing almost straight (like image 2) while sitting at the desk, I feel like most of the sound really "opens up" behind my back only, going past me. If I keep the speakers in 45-degree angle (image 1) but decide to watch videos from the sofa, again I feel like the sound isn't quite pointed at me and it's especially difficult to listen to dialogue. Before you start talking about the room - yes, I know about acoustic treatment and I'm taking it onto account already, but my auditory processing isn't normal so the acoustic treatment alone isn't enough, speaker angles make a huge difference for me. I'm saying this because the internet is full of people who get too caught up on the actual principle and start explaining why they think that I don't need something or don't have a problem with something. From having manually adjusted the angle thus far, I already have the experience of how this makes my life easier. I'm looking for advice/help or someone to make this for me as a service. Due to shipping costs, makers should be in Europe only. Advisors who could guide me through, doesn't matter where you are. I'm guessing that besides the disc parts, the remote control would require knowledge on electronics and coding of microcontrollers. The controller could either have a wheel or simply two buttons, one closing the speaker angle, other spreading it wider. The angle range only needs to change within 90 degrees so that suffices, but the program doesn't need a specific angle limiter made if it happens to be able to turn, say, 360 degrees. Taking ideas of methods, estimates, part choices and possible compensation fees!
