Any ideas for a safe, portable and relatively easy 60's style light show for stage?

Y'know, something like the colorful gyrating psychedelic oil-blobby light shows. Sometimes referred to as "liquid light". Think Jefferson Airplane or early Pink Floyd kinda stuff. I'd like to be able to do something like this for when my band plays, so ideally it'll be safe (don't want another Great White incident), portable and relatively easy to set up and let it do it's thing. Thanks!

Blues , Rock & Oldies Online DJ Needed

I am a Internet Oldies Radio station owner seeking out talent for my legally licensed professional internet radio station. My goal is to find people that want to have fun on air and practice their talents as a professional Jock learning the way that FM radio runs without all the stringent rules that FM radio has in place. The station has rules that need to be followed obviously , but their rules are simple and not so hard to follow that you feel like it is work. It is alot of fun. The site has alot to offer in terms of what is on it for activities and it is state of the art. What this position is for is 3 different styles of DJ , Blues DJ , Oldies DJ and a Country DJ , perfect for someone who loves music , has a LARGE collection of MP3's , enough to fill at least a 2 hour or 3 hour show. Maybe have some knowledge about the artist's being played to throw in some great little tidbits to the listeners. This show would air once a week and be promoted by all staff members at their convenience. This is a NON PAID position and to gain experience ONLY, while having fun and meeting new people from all over the world. If you interested and want to apply you must first have : * A good connection that is reliable to the internet * A fast PC able to handle chat , music , messengers going to be able to deal with possible requests. * A positive and upbeat attitude about your show * Plenty of music to fill the time slot * A good quality mic that doesnt sound tinny or cheap * And the ability to be able to commit to whatever time slot agreed upon * Be able to agree to some simple station rules regarding promo's being played , DMCA compliance rules , announcements and things of that nature. You will get alot of exposure and alot of interaction on this site. The intent of this message is to find good on air talent that wants to be part of a professionally run station, while having lots of fun and meeting lots of new people and learning how internet radio runs. So please if you are truly interested in this , or knows someone who is . . . . send me a email at : and you'll be responded to with more details and be setup for an interview with the DJ Mananger. Thanks everyone !

Anyone know anything about old (60's) guitar amps?

I picked up old a Jansen eight 25. It's in not bad condition, apart from a dodgy tube socket and a missing dial, all of which can be repaired easily. Anyway, I was looking on-line and could not find any data for it other than it's a early 60's amp. Seems to work great. the unit is about 2feet wide and 1.5 feet tall. Made in New Zealand. So I was wondering if anyone could provide me with more data on this, if it is worth anything. If it is not, then it would make a interesting teardown.

Wind turbine questions.

I am asking these questions on behalf of another member who has English as a second language. He is building a vertical axis wind turbine (savonius style, I think).  The mechanicals don't worry him, it's the generator and the windings. He wants to arrange six coils and six magnets.  The magnets are going to rotate with the turbine.  He has made the coils himself - each is wound clockwise, with 100 turns of wire. He assumes (and I agree) that the magnets should be separated by 60° of the circle, alternating which pole faces the coils (S-N-S-N-S-N) and the coils should also be separated by 60°. He would like to produce 12V DC, to be fed into a battery. What is the best, or most appropriate way to connect everything to achieve his goal? Links to sites that he can examine (and/or translate) at leisure would be nice.  Or sites in Turkish. (I suspect that Picoturbine documentation would help, but it's in long English.  Still, I've added it to the topic in case it is of help.)

Where to find old tube radios?

I am looking for old tube radios to collect and/or restore for fun. I have so far checked most of my local thrift stores about once a month for a while and I also checked a lot of local antique stores but found there prices to be ridiculously expensive for a beat up old radio. Now I am stumped as to where else to find these beutifull old radios loclaly, because the shipping for the heavy tube radios from E-bay can get incredibly exspensive as well. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to get them? I have already asked both my grandparents and my imediate family is keeping and open eye for them. Also if anyone knows of any good stores to buy this type of stuff in the DC/MD/VA area then I am open for that to.

Help identifying an unknown object?

Any idea what these are? I think they’re from a surveyor possibly around the 1950-60’s but not certain what they are. They’re appear to be made of plastic or lexan and don’t appear to have any optical qualities. The three pieces are concentric in size and have a goove on one side. They came in the leather pouch shown in the photo. Thanks in advance!

I have this thing? Answered

I have this thing. I got it from a bag of  obsolete parts where my dad works. It's a component, with a black plastic body. It's about 24 mm wide and 19 mm long. It has five leads, two coming out of the right and three coming out of the  left. The text on it is as follows: AMF POTTER & BRUMFIELD 109P471 JRE-4011 MADE IN U.S.A.               (Out here it has a symbol like "SA" inside the letter C) 02-07-75 The last one is obviously a date, it was made in the seventies. AMF used to make all kinds of things in the 60's and 70's apparently, so this must just be one of their products. My dad and I think it's a relay, but I've Googled it to no avail. Are there any old-time electronics nuts who can help me out here? Thanks a lot.

ideas needed for a horrible bathroom

I recently rented a new flat which has a small green bathroom. The tiles look horrible (green with brown floral ornaments - 60's style) and cover the whole walls till up to the ceiling. It's done. I decided to scrap the shell idea because it didn't benefit the gun at all. It can be easily modded for shells though, it still has the open breach type thing. I finally made a trigger, loosely based off of spider massacre. So now, it's a single shot. It's very powerful. Right now I have it shooting 60+ feet with 2 #64's. It fires grey or red rods. I prefer grey. I'll post it sometime soon. New stuff - -New barrel that uses oodammo (oodalumps' ammo). I call this the lumpy barrel.-Ammo holder for oodammo.

$600 Shapeways Printing Credit for $300

Hello all, I have acquired $600 in printing vouchers to Shapeways from a couple contests, they are actually divided into three separate vouchers of $100, $250, and $250. I'm sure I can find something awesome to use the money to print but as I'm in college now I could better spend this towards something else (books!!). I'd be willing to do %40 percent off for an individual voucher (so 60 for 100 or 150 for 250) or %50 percent off for all 3 together. Feel free to message me if interested. Thanks!

Voltage regulator Design Problem?

Ah, voltage regulators. Easy Right! Not this one. I am making a voltage regulator like for an automobile regulator for a DC generator. (I'm replacing the old DC generator regulator on Pre 60's cars) A battery is charged from a winding on a Generator  (20V @ 60 Amps) A voltage sensor on the battery voltage turns on and off a switch driving the Field winding. The Field winding basically "turns on and off" the generator output. The battery is connected directly to the generator. (Why  and Why not is coming up) But when the Genrator's output is lower than the Battery voltage, current will flow back from the battery to the generator winding and discharge the Battery. So I need some isolation between the generator output and the battery. Alternators are easy since it has a bridge onthe output keeping the current from flowing backwards. Old regulators used a relay which burned out sooner or later. So easy, use a diode right? Just put a diode inseries with the generator to the batery. By the way, the "open circuit" voltage on a generator is about 200VDC No! The best diode I can find has a .7V drop at 60 Amps which is 42 Watts of heat to dissipate. Ahhh, so use a FET, They can get down into the milliOhms right? Except for the reverse polarity (and ESD) protecton diode always across the FETs defeat the purpose of a reverse polarity switch. So who out there is smarter than me? What goes inthe box marked ?? Any solutions accepted. Ungefahrt (now neither young or fast)

Is it possible to modify a soft-power button?

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this (apologies if its not).... I have a small stereo receiver (Lepai S-60) that I use to power speakers in my kitchen and it works well, but the stereo requires that I press the power button on it or the remote every time I want to turn it on.  I was hoping to hook it up to a WeMo switch so that I could turn it on/off via Google Home, but the fact that its a soft power button means that even if the switch turns on or off, the radio doesn't remember what state it was in last. Is there a way to modify the circuit board so that the receiver is always on and thus, I could control it via the WeMo switch? Thanks in advance, Tim

wiring a building up with a 10 awg stranded wire

I have recently bought a repoed amish rent to own building.  it was getting wired in the middle of the repo.  i have some stranded 10awg stranded wire with an extension cord male plug on one end.  i would like to have it to where i can easily disconnect the power by unplugging it from my outside outlet of the house.  inside the building is a complete breaker box with a 60 amp breaker and a bunch of 30's as secondaries.  i have read that 30 amp is max for the 10 awg stranded wire.  is there any way that i can have the other end of the wiring put in the breaker box with a 30 amp breaker as the main and 15's and possibly a 20 here and there for breakers.  it has about 6 outlets and one flourescent light in there.  i will have only a small air compressor, small miter saw, couple lights, and a drill battery charger in the building, but never all running at the same time.  can someone give me a couple pointers on this?  by the way, this is industrial warehouse wire, and not no cheap stuff.

Custom MP3 player advise. Both code and construction?

Going to take an old 60's portable radio, remove guts (except batter supply and speaker) and then incorporate an inexpensive mp3 player to play out of the speaker. I don't see too much trouble with this, but not sure if someone has done this before (seen similar, but not exactly like this, i.e. bigger radios, or ones that plug into walls) Also, seeing if anyone has written a psuedo random algorithm that will play 4 random songs from one list, then a random from another, and then repeat the whole process again. The idea is to play 4 ransom songs, then an old radio ad, then back to songs, etc. Anyone have advise (other than the "don't do it", or "it's too hard")

How do I trace a home electric circuit from the breaker to its terminus??

Just moved into a 60's home.  The electrical system has some "unique" aspects.  Everything works and the building inspector didn't find any glitches but the main panel wasn't labeled.  I spent a day tracing out most of the circuits.  I ended up with two 110V circuits that don't seem to power anything in the house.  ( hey that is better than the 3 110V and 2 240V unknown circuits that i started out with! )  I have accounted for things like outside lights and outlets, attic fan and lights, extra outlets in the garage, and a line out to a shed.   The breakers are wired and "on".     So can I trace these circuits from the main panel to where ever they end up?

So, my goal is to take an old 60's transistor radio and house an MP3 player in there, hwoever, I would like the volume knob to still work (not thinking that's an issue), but I would like the tuning know to actually affect the MP3 player, perhaps turning to certain points would activate playfolders of types of music. Does this seem like a job of arduino or am I barking up the wrong tree? I'll check back to see if any one has any input, but also please feel free to email me at notveryhotmale *at* The mp3 player would be accessable to add or change up playlists, it's just the know portion I am having trouble figuring out. My computer locks up with an audio loop, help! Answered

I recently upgraded my hardware (I put in two 8600 GT's in SLI, and an E6850, both used), and shortly after, my games began to lock up. Whatever was on the screen would stay there, and the last second of audio would loop. The only way to get out of it was a hard reset. Then I noticed when I unplugged my other two hard drives, games wouldn't freeze up anymore. So I replaced my 400 watt PSU with a 550 watt, with 50 amps on the 12 volt rails. Everything seemed to clear up, until today, when I was browsing Newegg and listening to Audioslave (not very resource intensive), and it locked up with the same symptoms for no apparent reason. I'm getting worried now, as I shelled out 75 bucks for a decent PSU and the same stuff is happening. My CPU idles in the upper 30's to lower 40's, and peaks at 60 C in games. I know it's a bit toasty, but it shouldn't be hot enough to cause this sort of problem, right? So if anyone has any ideas about what's going on, any help is appreciated.

blutooth telephone

Hi people who are smarter than me! I have been searching the great Google for the past while and I cannot find something that does this. I love the portability of cellphones and i love the look an feel of landlines (you cannot beat the look of a phone on a a desk. What I want is a device that connects to my cellular telephone wirelessly and that a landline can plug into. This means that it must supply about 40 - 60 VDC to power an old phone that DOES NOT HAVE EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY so it could operate a touch tone phone from the 80's and 90's. When I get a call on my phone I want it to ring the phone. When I pick up the handset I want it to answer the call and allow me to talk to the person. When I place a call I want to be able to pick up the handset and then dial a 10 digit number and then it place the call through my cell phone. During the call I want to be able to press a number on the landline and for it to press that number on my phones keypad. when i put the handset down i want it to hang up. Is this even possible? can it be done? let me know! Thanks! scott

What is my bottleneck? Answered

I just recently built a new gaming machine, and have been running into a bottleneck issue. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.  My Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate MSI GD-55 Z-77a Motherboard Intel i5 3570k OC 4.2 Ghz Radeon HD 5770 x2 (Crossfire) 16Gb (4x4) Corsaire 1600Mhz RAM 1 Tb 7200rpm Western Digital HDD 850w Coolermaster PSU I have downloaded the most recent AMD drivers and Crosssfire Profiles. The problem I am having, is that I almost never see anything in my computer running at max while gaming. I will usually have my GPUs running at around 60-70%, and none of my CPU cores running higher than 50-60%.  The first thing that came to my mind was temperature. However my CPU never gets hotter than 65c, and my GPUs never hotter than 80c.  The other thing that I thought of was a possible lack of power. But 850w is at least 40% more than recommended for my system specs. To test this, I did a CPU benchmark, and a GPU benchmark at the same time, both hit 100% usage, and my computer did not lose power. (nor did anything get too hot) After ruling Temperature and power out, I thought maybe it was my RAM. However, I have read multiple places that it is nearly impossible for any game to max out quad channel memory bandwidth. I have more than enough of better-than-average RAM, storage isn't the issue. So I doubt its my RAM. But I am no expert. I then ran "Windows Resource monitor" to watch my HDD Disk usage. While gaming, nothing transferred more than a couple Mb/S. The specific specs of my HDD include a 64MB Cache, and a  6.0Gb/s Data transfer rate. My Motherboard also supports 6Gb/s Transfer rates. So I doubt its my HDD. I know my GPUs are 2 generations old, but if they were the bottleneck they would be running at 100% (or at least higher than 80%) Now I don't know what to think, except that its maybe software related. But I cannot think of anything specific that would do this sort of thing. Any suggestions?

Why is my ipod creating parasitic signals on the speakers?

I'm currently trying to build an ipod dock out of these speakers (,305.html — they use an usb plug as alimentation) and since i'd like my station to be able to charge the ipod, I decided to use a double usb charger:;_cat=60&ref;=85-8984 When and only when both speakers and ipod are connected to the charger and the speakers' jack is connected to the ipod, I get a parasitic signal on the speakers. I tried all the other configuration (using one or two power sources, using a different audio input), but none present the same issue. Would you know why I have this problem ? Do you know how I could solve it ?

What does the connections on this switching power supply mean? How do I get power to it?

I have this power supply and I don't know how to use it with my LED lights. I don't know what the connections on it mean. I assume I need to connect it to an outlet at some point but I am not quite sure how to do this in a safe and proper manner. I need some basic newb level directions to do this. I am in a bit over my head with this stuff. I expected it would just be more plug and play. Here is the power supply and the connections in which I don't completely understand. I just cant afford too much time to dig in completely into learning everything right now. I think this is the pdf of the power supply: Thanks Josh

Electronic Toolkit

I do some work with the FIRST Robotics kids and it is amazing to see what they are doing.  Big problem though seems to be a general lack of electrical test equipment.  They don't really have the money to buy oscilloscopes, function generators, CAN and I2C analyzers.   So I got one of the M3 Discovery boards from STmicro and it is really cool.  It has four 5MS A/Ds on it plus a whole host of other features(CAN, I2C, Serial etc.). So it got me thinking. Why couldn't we turn one of these chips into an "All-In-One" electrical toolkit and keep it cheap($50-$60, BOM ~$20).  It would be fairly easy to turnkey. I threw together some simple specs, what do people think. 1) Will supply general use drivers so a user can use the app or write their own. 2) Oscilloscope   a. Two Channel     i. 2MHZ of Analog Bandwidth per channel     ii. 10MS/s per channel     iii. Trigger on rising edge, falling edge, on-command, run-stop actions     iv. Datalogging for extended time periods at up to 10hz per channel (data stored directly to console),  maybe higher rate will  just have to see 3) Serial – 2 Ports   a. Multi selectable protocol w/slew control     i. RS232, RS422, RS485 4) CANBus – 1 port 5) I2C – 1 port 6) SPI  - 1 port 7) 8 Discrete User Selectable 8) Function Generator   a. Two Channel      i. 1MS/s small signal change      ii. 250kS/s full range change      iii. 0-3.3VDC buffered output  9) PWM - 4 Channels

XYZ Recumbent Trike

So I've been wanting a recumbent bike to help me get in shape. I'm far enough out of shape that a standard bike is uncomfortable to the point of being a deterent. The biggest obstacle to me is the price. Even the Terra Trike which is supposed to be an affordable, entry level option is almost a grand even bare bones. I tried looking on craigslist but even used ones rarely dip below 800. So I looked for something I could diy. My biggest obstacle on that front is I don't own, or know how to use a welder. I think I've found something promising though.  There is a group in The Netherlands called N55. They are sort of a engineering/art collective and they focus on things to improve modern life. One of the projects they have out there is their XYZ Vehicles. They are pedal powered vehicles designed so that they can be put together with a minimum of tools. All that really should be needed is a power drill, some wrenches and a metal saw. From what I understand, they do classes where they build the 2 upright versions, the bakfiet and the tadpole design with the cargo box, but these are all over in europe and I am in Arizona so... I haven't been able to find anyone as of yet who has made one of the recumbents here in the states and posted about it. I would love to do this and post it as an instructable but I need some help. All of the materials list is metric and while I personally think a base-10 system makes a heck of a lot more sense that what we call standard measurements, I'm still not familiar with metric. So my question to the community is, should I convert all the measurements to standard or is there someplace i can buy these materials from here in the states in metric sizes? Awesome stuff you can do with high-speed internet?

So I recently thought up the idea that I can get free high speed internet at the computers at the public library in town (I can only get dial-up at my house). I have to ride my bike a few kilometers to get into town but I can get like 100 KB/s!! Gah, I wish I'd thought of this a long time ago. When I went in yesterday I just downloaded a bunch of crap. I got 60 MB of stuff, mostly podcasts, in about ten minutes. That would've taken me over five hours to get on my dial-up. But is there any thing else that I should try, other than just downloading a buttload of stuff? I've never had broadband, so I'm kinda just dumbfounded by the possibilities.

I want to get more out of my sound

I've been getting kinda bored with how my music sounds, and I have LOTS of it on my computer. Some is really pushing the line as far as the quality (128kbps bleh), but most of my music is fairly good quality, some of it flac rips of my cds. I can listen to a good cd on a good cd player on my stereo and it has clean basslines and no distortion in the treble, and no crackle unless it was recorded right into the track. But on my mac, mostly only the high bit rate stuff sounds okay on my stereo. Stuff at 192kb/s or vbr sounds crackely and I can't stand it. I often found a lot of the times it was the EQ in iTunes, if I turned it off, sometimes the crackle would go away, has anyone found this with their mac? I have the volume down 4 notches from full, so I know it's not clipping or it would show on my stereo. I've tried surfing the inter webs for DSP software or something of that sort for my mac, but apparently all there is, is like professional mixer board software and just stuff I didn't want to get into. Why can't there be a program made for even a PC that gives you any amount of access to sliders to adjust the EQ of the sound, that doesn't sound like crap? Im not talking itunes what? 10 sliders? I want to be able to adjust like 30-60 sliders per channel, does anyone make eq software like that????

help! modifications on a vintage pre-amp Answered

I found a working pre-amp inside a turntable from the 60's. The turntable was scrapt, so I remove the pre-amp from inside. Now I want to put it inside a vintage radio wooden box, the problem I got, 5 potentiometers on the pre-amp, but I need to modify this so it will only have 2, becuz the radio box has only 2. I will use an iPad with this pre-amp, so there really no need for extra audio adjustments like treble or bass... So one for volume, the other for open and close. How do I modify the circuit of this pre-amp so there will be no sound problem ? Do I remplace the gradable resistors with a standard value resistor, if this is how to do it, what value should I use ? I've done some tests, if I skip the potentiometer and I'm getting too much static. I' would appreciate help on this! thank everyone !

A Visit to Simon Field's Farm

Last Thursday my friends Quinn and Xander invited me along on a visit to Simon Field, a chemist, inventor, and entrepreneur. He lives on a small farm in the mountains south of San Jose, with his wife, a couple of alpacas, some goats, and a great many chickens, parakeets, and other parrot-like birds. And a tree house with a rope bridge going out to it, where he occasionally hosts parties. And a solar cell array from which they get most or all of their electricity. And a huge redwood tree, which someone in the '60's rented out to live in! And a hillside spring which under the right circumstances can shoot a fountain 30 feet into the air. And an art studio, and many artworks of various sorts just set here and there for one to stumble across. And a lot of salamanders... Check the image notes for details. Inside, his house is filled with science toys, spilling out from his workshop.  I had to make a separate forum topic on those to treat them properly!

My never-published K'nex creations

These are just a couple of my creations that I never posted. I'm don't have most of them anymore, so don't even ask for me to post. Hope you like them! 1 And 2 are my gatling gun. This was a great gun, but the motor was not powerful enough to push the triggers. I liked it because it had the switch for the motor build right onto the handle. 3 And 4 are my version of spider massacre. It was a great gun, it shot 60 feet with 2 rubberbands (the ones on in the picture). 5 And 6 are a really good magazine I made. 7 Is my modded dd-27. It was not a big mod, but it is still one of my favorite guns. 8 Is my Semi-Auto. This was a excellent gun, but took a while to reload. 9: The front of my modded Pineapplebob's sniper. This mod helped a lot. 10 is my sniper. Silentassasin actually made a Instructable for this one. 11 and 12: A really old mod of foresthell12's gun. it was excellent. Redneckobseesed expanded a little more on this one and came up with the ROSP. Thats it! Thanks for having a look at this forum.
