I think its kind of silly that people ask if they should make and instructable on X topic, just because no one is interested now, that doesn't mean people wont join in the future and see it. These are just some of my latest i am thinking about putting on Instructables. Enjoy and leave comments for me to improve or revise. Im only 12 so go easy for now lol.First one:Mini traffic light that can be used as decoration or put in a locker. Me and my friend put this bad boy together one weekend. It fires over 300 feet with proper ammo. At the moment i am testing out metal nuts, washers, and metal balls i got from my bro as ammo. THE POUCH SUCKS. I NEED NEW SUGGESTIONS.Materials:2 pieces of plywood approximately 2" by 22".Screw and nutLARGE rubber bands (or tie some together like i did cuz i ran out of big ones)and a microfiber cloth for the pouch. I am completely open to new ideas for a pouch because i don't really like it myself.Third one:Skewer Shooter. I modified this off of my old one. My step-son made this awesome puzzle for me.  He knows how much I like Instructables so this was one of the gifts he made for me. Everyone knows that a hand-made gift is best.  And one hand-made by a loved-one even better.  But one that also includes the Instructables robot?  He gets points for paying attention to my hobbies!

I am rather disappointed that I am finding instructables that point to websites.  I think Instructables is getting desparate if peope post something here, without proper instructions(intentionally left out) and then feature it. Perhaps it is an accepted process here now, in which case such instructables are not to blame but merely a symptom, or perhaps misperception on my part, of what the purpose of this site is for. Case in point: https://www.instructables.com/id/A-New-Workbench/ I don't mind if you create an instructable, put up all the directions, and then also point to your site.  But to put up, not even half, of the instructions and then point to your site seems dissapointing, if not misleading to me.  This is a dangerous slope from people who "share what they do and how they do it" to a company simply advertising to get other people to their own site. I am the only one who feels like this?

So I know this idea has been floating around for a while. I want to try to put this into action.However, in here I will be telling you guys what I plan to do... Hi, I started working on an instructables on my instructables on my iPod Touch 4, from Febuary until almost the end of March. My instructable was almost done, just one more step to go. Every step has a lot of photos that was taken with my iPod Touch. Last time I worked on it was when I tried to save the instructable on to my device, and it seem like it did not save to the device properly. I did turn off the iPod and turn it on, since then I was not able to open instructable app. any more. What I ment was I can touch the instructable app., the app. start and loading some stuff, but after a while it crashed! See the attached videos. The first one, after I open up the app. I did not even do anything It crashed. The second one I open up the app. then try to touch the share icon, it then crashed! I don't know what to do right now.  The worse thing was I did not have the backup of the instructables. And I did not save it to my instructables page either!(my bad, I should have done so, I thought it was only one last step left to do and would post it as soon as it done! I guess Murphy's Law just hit me!) I thought about delete the app on my iPod, then download and install a new one from app store. But I afraid that I would lose my instructable that I was working on on the iPod! May be I already did! Or if I have to wait until the new update is available, to see if it works and be able to access to my instructable?????

I wanted to brag about having a pro-membership but then realized that everyone in this forum has one too. So that was kind of a bummer. So just poppin' in before i get started on my instructable which is secret.

Wow. One year. Doesn't seem so big, it's gone so fast! I want to thank everyone who has helped and guided me, been my friend, or even just friendly! In this time, I've posted 21 instructables. That's on average one every 17.39 days! Wow. I guess... I'm addicted to Instructables! Eric, thanks for making this great site! As someone who just dropped by and spotted an interesting project, I am not interested in a monthly annually renewable subscription. How about offering a one-time payment for a download? I'd pay up to $2 depending on the complexity. Without this option no money would flow, so looks like a win-win to me.

Only recently, I am required to enter a password every time I log on to instructables....has this happened to anyone else?  Is this part of the corporate changes we are to expect from the new alliance/coupling of Instructables/Autodesk?  A sign of things to come?  Or is this my browser, my computer(s).  When the machine asks?  do you want me to remember your password?, I say yes, but it never does...hmmmmmm.

Hey everyone, Well, today is my one year anniversary on Instructables!!  Wow, I can't believe I've been on here for a year!!  I mean after 23 Instructables you would think I'd be gettin sick of this site. haha Don't worry I won't be leaving any time soon!! ... but it's a giant leap for me! The Birding Challenge has now reached a grand total of *five* valid entries.  That means I can hand out prizes! So, don't sit there on that grand idea, somebody is going to win something - why can't it be you? Don't forget, you can also enter Challenge entries into up to three of the more formal Contests (who doesn't need a laser cutter, right?).

I have a feeling that there is a bug in Instructables that unsubscribes people after they subscribe to me. (or not only me?) I know people un-sub once in a while, But I think this isn't the case... In the past week (or two), Most of the people that followed me, Have un-followed, And I don't think this is a coincidence. I think I can estimate that it happened to me with ~15 people. Am I the only one that has this problem?

Consider this, you're a student with very little spare time and you get a day off, what can you do? Search for an instructable all day? NO! If there was a folder of instructables in every genre, full of one or two day projects it would be great for people like me who want to do something productive or helpful in a short amount of time. For example you go into the Technology genre, but you don't have time to make a super complicated ipod dock, so you hit the one day folder and POW! Quick, easy and super fast one day instructables. I'm sure many agree with this idea and the concept behind it is fairly simple and undemanding. Please take into account. All the best. l3owzaaaah.

One thing that has really annoyed me lately is that when you search an istructable half of the page is taken up by ads. I used to be able to look through 20 or so pages but now I have to look through 30 or 40 and it has really slowed down my computer. I was wondering if there is anything you can do to stop this. I liked how it used to be up in the top out of the way but now I don't go on this site as much because it really annoys me.

Maybe this post could have stayed in the topic of Instructables Etiquette so call me redundant ;).Anyways, is it considered poor taste to repeat an Instructable of another person? I found an instructable that is exactly what I'm working on but I've found the said posting could have been better presented. Granted the posted reassured me the project is feasible but their 7 pages of instructions with two pictures could have been easily condensed into one page. In making a copy Instructable I would not hesitate in giving credit and link of the original person. Anything thoughts?

Just to let you guys know (you guys being members of the group PWMMOP) I am working on another drawing instructable that I'm hoping to publish soon. So their will be more instructables in the group soon. Hopefully, new ones will start coming as new members are added also. I'm hoping to make more drawing instructables after I finish the one I'm working on but I need ideas. So...if you have any ideas please let me know!!!

Zachninme first turned me on to the Chumby, and if you haven't heard, they're coming out with a new version called the Chumby One. It's going to cost $120 (as opposed to the classic's $200), but if you pre-order it, you can get it for $100. The new one is plastic instead of bean baggy and has a retro feel. There are a few other new features, such as a rechargeable battery compartment, as well. I ordered mine a few days ago, who else is getting one? And to any developers out there, I'd like to suggest an instructables widget! Ideally, you'd be able to view a particular instructable. Imagine being able to carry it around instead of printing out a copy/carrying a laptop. I don't know much about the limits of widgets, but if you can't search for one via the chumby, maybe you could send it to the chumby from the computer with a log on? If anybody's interested in developing that, I'll help test it once I get mine ;) Update: Apparently Ewilhelm is ahead of the game. He's already made a widget that shows recent instructables. It would still be awesome to be able to choose the instructable, however. If you don't know what a chumby is, it's an "internet appliance." A Chumby is a small box with a 3.5 inch touch screen, speakers, an accelerometer, a usb port and of course, wifi. It's mostly useless if it can't connect to the internet (either with wifi or a USB Ethernet converter) because everything you do streams from chumby.com. You set up channels of widgets (user written applications that include everything from games and internet radio to RSS feeds and sports scores). You pick a channel and it will rotate through the widgets that are on it. You can also set it to switch to certain channels at certain times (alarm clock, etc) This will be my first one, but I'm super pumped to get it. I think the reduced price lasts through the end of the month, but don't hold me to it. chumby.com

Would an Instructable about general things I've learned in disassembling stuff be of interest/use? There are lots of Ibles that focus on specific product disassenbly, but I haven't seen one that focuses on general disassembly tips/tricks.

So I have come across this one user. MegaPrincess3001 https://www.instructables.com/member/MegaPrincess3001/ He is posting fake instructables. I mean, these Instructables obviously are fake and are not helpful in any way. They are funny, but I do not feel they belong in this community. For example, one video is just of him and one of his friends eating baked goods and then pretending to poop out a "pizza". He passes this off as "making a pizza". Watch "how to make a pizza" to get what I mean.  I have attached  an uploaded image of him "cooking a pizza" to show you what I mean What is instructables policy on these videos? Are they considered spam, inappropriate? or will we just allow them to exist on this site? I have flagged both of his videos as inappropriate. If you agree with me, I suggest that you do so to. ~wowguy

Hey, I am a complete noob to wiring diagrams and I have a few questions. Here is the wiring diagram on the ballast and I would like to know how to add the extra bulb to it as at the min it is wired up to power only 1 bulb. The make and model is "HELVAR L30A" http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc379/josh40996/Wirediagram.png 1. Where do I put the (I think its called) start plug? Currently it is connecting the two end caps that power the one bulb. Also do I need two start plugs to power two bulbs or only one? 2. Which wires and where do I plug them into the ballast?  I was trying to look for a new wallpaper, as there isn't 'just the right Doctor Who' wallpaper out there, and it occurred to me that Instructables don't have any downloadable wallpapers (that I could find). SO I took it upon myself to make some and share them with all of you! I've never made wallpapers so I kept my designs simple. I chose the Instructables Robot, as he is the most familiar icon around here. I didn't want the hand, as for some reason it creeps me out.  I have made 5 wallpapers in total: One is the Instuctables Robot sitting in the middle quite large. Res: 1024x768 Second is the same above but the resolution is 1280x1024 Third one is the same as the above two, except the Robot is a lot smaller. Res: 1024x768 Fourth: Same as above but designed for some laptops, so the resolution is 1280x800 Fifth: Same as above but resolution is 1280x1024 Feel free to tinker or change them. I have also included a screenshot of my laptop using the fourth image.

Next week is my school's annual "Activities Week". On Tuesday, I'll be taking thirty kids paint-balling, but for the rest of the week I'll be making my Paper Catapult with my groups, and using Heed as a target (they're going to try and knock his head off).Because the kids keep asking me where I get my stuff from, I will be displaying adverts for this site all week (I usually have one stuck in the window of my lab door, but this one will be copied up to A3 and stuck on the wall over the instructions display).I thought you'd like it, maybe to put up a version at work, in your neighbourhood or at school. It's only a Word document, but it does the trick.

While mowing through some desighns for a play wood outrigger, i came acorss some fairly intresting consept. that i should use straight timber battern inbetween thin nails to make the curve for the side pannels (for the hull) but of coarse i cant find out what a stright timber battern is or how to make one. so i thorugh my self at the mercy of the great sailers here at instructables

Never really wanted to tell every one about it because that might be considered as "Advertising"?Well, firstly, it's not advertising if it's not obtrusive and secondly, you're in the right place!Post here the first of your many Instructables to come, give it's title, a brief description, a picture or two and a link. There's no prize (from me) but you will get a lot more views than previously.Here's mine, it's a simple optical illusion that's not too hard to make (if you know how) and is an extremely easy way to make money at school, when people start asking "Can I have one?" and "Can you make me one?" Just remember, feed back's always nice, comment on every one else's; they might comment on yours.Hope to see yours!~K

Why is Instructables so damn perfect??  Yes, I believe I am addicted to Instructables lol...after all it's very easy to get addicted to it. Especially for someone like me, who loves to create, this is a dream website! :D  Thanks to this site my creativity is finally challenged and it's so good to see so many people with my same passion. During these months I have been able to create more things than all the ones I had done in my life! And it feels so good. The last few years have been hard but now I feel alive again. Thank you Instructables! :) I love this community and one of my new dreams is to actually work for this website...the coolest job with the coolest people! :)

Ok, let me preface what I am about to say by letting you know that I am not trying to be rude in any way. I think there are way to many Instructables coming out about paracord bracelets. I frequently get Instructable newsletters in my inbox with a paracord bracelet Instructable. Paracord bracelets is a very dead horse at this point. I am not trying to be mean or rude, I am just suggesting that people should think of a different Instructable before they consider making one about paracord bracelets. Cheers! Darman12

This is a forum topic that I've been wanting to publish for the past week, but I wasn't able to because of a bug. 18 emails to service later, here I am: I recently published two Instructables: How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise, and Top 10 Vise Hacks!. After being featured in the newsletter, How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise got ~20K views, and Top 10 Vise Hacks. got ~50K views. Now that makes no sense (to me. Wouldn't someone that was interested in an Instructable about tips, tricks, and hacks for your vise wouldn't be interested in how to make a vise? 1.5X more? That makes no sense... (I would think that there would be a difference of 10-20%, but 200%?) Also, speaking of the newsletter, it would be awesome to receive an email at the end of the year, that shows the most viewed Instructables that were posted this year. This could be a nice feature... In my opinion, the thumbnail for How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise was taken on a white background and is really good, and the thumbnail for Top 10 Vise Hacks doesn't have text, and isn't very good. I think you'll agree with me on this... After the views from the newsletter had started to slow down to about 1000 every day, Top 10 Vise Hacks was featured again, in the "top 5 most viewed Instructables of the week" which has brought it to 98K views already. Does that mean that SO MANY people have missed it from the newsletter? That's also weird... Another thing is that my Instructable on How to Build a Wooden Drill-Press Vise has a fairly good thumbnail, and was put on the Homepage. However, my Instructable on How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise wasn't, while I think the thumbnail is WAAAY better.  What do you think? :)

Hej! Today I recognized a translated version of one of my ibles and I'd like to give some feedback about the experience ;) I think it's supercool someone took the time and made the effort to translate one of my ibles. I really enjoy the fact that people I would never be able to talk to now can read my ible.  That's actually amazing and I'd like to thank you for that! And I want to share some of my thoughts and feelings about it: REALIZING: - The first few moments when I realized there was a new instructable existing in my account I was a little bit in shock.  Don't get me wrong - but my profile feels like my "private" spot on the site. It's a messy place with lot's of weird draft ideas and unfinished instructables. (I would have tidied up if I'd expected guests...) Of course I surmised admins and staff somehow would be able to enter this place - but I feel a little invaded as it actually happened.   -- I think there are several possibilities to avoid this irritating moment: -The translator could write a PM before starting the translation. Just to inform the author about there is soon going to be another version of one of your ibles. (This might be a little bit more "paperwork" but could also save the translator some time. There is a chance an author speaks another language and would be able to do the translation him/herself...) - The translator (or the instructables robot) could send a PM to the author when the translation is published to inform him/her about the new ible. (I'm a sucker for those "your instructable was featured" mails - a "your instructable was translated" mail would make me happy and would help me to forget about the girl's cave invasion)  INSPECTION: - I can't say anything about the quality of the translation since I don't speak spanish - but it seems to me the translator was pretty meticulous on his/her job: the wikipedia links in the instructable are "translated" as well and link now (as far as possible) to the spanish wikipedia. That's thoughtful and I really appreciate it! (It's a funny thing that, although I can't actually read this instructable, it still feels like "mine".) SUGGESTION: I think it wouldn't hurt if the translator adds a very last sentence to the translated instructable like " this instructable was translated by XY" There are several advantages to this info: - There would be given some credit to the translator - The people writing comments wouldn't be confused about the combination of a perfectly written instructable and google translated comment replies... I have no clue who translated my ible. I think it would be awesome if the translator had a instructables profile. I would like to thank this person!  So this is my feedback, might it be useful... (Woho! I'm exited about the translation! This is übercool! Thank you! )

Hey all, Instructables is an amazing website, spend a lot of time in the electronics section! Haven't had time to make my first instructable yet, but getting ready too shortly! I found two bugs, one that doesn't hinder usability but it has a huge annoyance factor, and the other is an inconvenience more or less. The first one: Ironically I found this while looking at pictures of bugs people had previously submitted in the comments of the featured bugs article. When you click on the image to view it in the light-box some of the objects on the page ALWAYS show up in front of the light-box. This makes me believe that the Z-Index is possibly set too high on those objects, haven't had a chance to play around in FireBug and propose a solution as of yet though. I have attached the screenies of this problem below. I only took screen-shots of the problem on this specific page, but rest assured it does it on every single page I have checked. I figured this pair of images is enough. Second "bug" (not so much a bug as a recommendation here): When posting in the forums I ALWAYS have to do the "Select a category group and category" step in my post. I understand that if I wasn't already inside a specific forum (category) when I clicked the new topic button it wouldn't already know where I wanted to post to, but seeing as you don't have this button until you are inside a category it should be able to fill this in for you. For example I was inside the "bugs" category in the "help" category group when I clicked the "New Topic" button, it wouldn't be too difficult to have that button pass a parameter to allow those boxes to automatically have the right selection, but keep them selectable just in case someone would want to change where it was posted. Computer 1 specs: OS: Both Ubuntu 11.10 (x86 and x64) and Windows 7 (x64) Browsers: Firefox 8.0, Chromium 15.0.874.106 (Developer Build 107270 Linux) CPU: Core 2 Duo e5700 RAM: 8 Gb GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 (Driver Version 2.1.2) Computer 2 Specs (My web development machine): OS: Windows 7 SP1 (x64) and XP Pro SP3 (x86) Browsers: Firefox 9.0.1, IE 9.0.8812.16421, Chrome 16.0.912.63, Safari 5.1.2, Opera 11.60 CPU: Core i5 m520 RAM: 8Gb GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5470 I was able to replicate this issue across 3 operating systems with various levels of installed updates, and across every single common browser, updated to their latest versions for the specific operating systems. In supporting browsers using compatibility mode this problem wasn't present, but as previous posts stated paddings, menus and some other items move around the site or collapse on themselves, specifically on the front page using internet explorer. These bugs were replicated using both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of operating systems, and on 64 bit operating systems it was tested on both the 32 and 64 bit browsers.

So our intern got me to finally check out facebook and I started a new account to find out that I'm one of the last few people in the metaverse to jump on this thing. Being an Artist in Residence at Instructables was an amazing experience.  It's difficult to put into words but I'll give it my best shot. Let's start at the beginning!  Because where else would you start?  I'm a college student, but I wasn't when I started to love building things.  A knee injury years ago took me out of wrestling for a summer and I used my ample free time during that time period quickly filled up as I was excited by the idea of breaking water into hydrogen and oxygen.  Over the past five years, I've grown to love making all sorts of things.  Instructables has always been a fantastic community to get ideas for projects and share what I've made.  After being part of the community for so long I wanted a chance to be a bigger part of Instructables and have the opportunity to meet some of the people who I've been following on this website for years!  Hopefully that only sounds mildly creepy.  The Artist in Residence program allowed me to have just that opportunity. I had the honor of being one of the very first Artists to make use of Instructables/Autodesk's brand new facility.  It's incredible.  If you're on a tour, it will be referred to as the greatest workshop and creative space in the world, and after working in it for a month,  that's an easy statement for me to believe.  The metal shop is where I loved spending most of my time as I worked on my main project: a jet engine.  However, I barely scratched the surface of what's possible even when I dabbled in playing around with 3D printing and laser cutting.  I'll post links to the projects I did when I'm done at the bottom of this post! I could go on and on about how exciting it was to learn how to TIG weld, or pull my first 3D printed object out of the printer for cleaning.  That's not what I loved most about being an Artist in Residence.  Don't get me wrong, that's why I was there, and I loved every minute of it!  But what I loved most was just being in the office at Instructables.  It was an amazing feeling to get to interact with lots of different people who all in some way loved to make things.  Being around people who know what Maker Faire is meant a lot to me!  Usually mentioning it only yields confused faces in my city.  It was great getting to talk about different projects people had done or were working on, which made me love "Build Day"s more than anything.  Being at the headquarters of Maker Culture made me feel at home. I've been away from the Pier where Instructables HQ is for a few weeks now.  I miss everyone I got to meet there, and I miss having the resources to make anything I could imagine.  Being and Artist in Residence will always be one of my best memories ever, and I can only hope that at some point I'll end up back at Instructables to see the awesome people I met and build some more cool stuff. I'm hot and tired. I've wasted the past three years hunting down sites like this one. I print out reams of instructions for projects. I buy everything I need to make things. But there's never any time. Maybe I should have settled for just one dog. Two is a lot of work. Ya think?

It looks like, if you happen to save more than 10 unpublished instructables/slideshows, the unpublished page does not show the helpful little "1-10 of XX {Next}" information and button (like it does in the published section). If I add "&offset;=10" to the URL though it does take me to the correct page(s).

It's been a toughweek for me, people. School started a week ago and something strange happened. Friends have been abandoning me one by one, and everyone acted soulless in front of me. It seemed like everyone was unhappy with somehing. Then i started to realize that everyone was unhappy with me.  This morning, i received messages from my friends saying why they hate me. Apparently i was an arrogant little ****. My friends were trying to deal with my arrogance for too long, and they couldn't take it anymore. I then logged on to instructables, yet having more controversy on my 'ibles. If you want to know why i am arrogant, I was considered to be a 'perfect kid'. I have a 3.8 gpa in high school now, and i am taking 4 AP classes, and one honors. I also made varsity tennis and JV basketball in freshman year, so i was considered good at sports (not bragging). I also won 3 karate sparring tournaments, which raised my self confidence even more higher, to the point where i almost became a kanye west duplicate. I was incredibly egotistical and happy with my self, because i was good at almost everything. I felt as though i was on top of everyone else, and i have always tried to maintain that position. But that happiness vanished during this week. Even in my first couple of 'ibles, i was overhappy and arrogant, and i used to demand respect and recognition. But i later realized that this wasn't right. I have made my mistakes of being an arrogant D-bag, and i am introducing the new me: a still happy person who doesn't cross the line towards arrogance. - IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Everyone has done bad things and made mistakes. If you haven't done bad things, you are a liar. Ask yourself this: How many times have you cheated on anything? Did you steal from anyone (even something worth a penny)? How many times have you lied to anyone? How many times have you broken the rules of your household, school, or anywhere else? There are many questions i can ask, but i will stop right here. We all make mistakes, but you are a good person as long as you LEARN from your mistake. I have learned from my bad things i have done in the past. I will be more mature and still maintain above a 3.8 gpa and still do my sports, but i will change my attitude and i won't be so arrogant and immature. This is a new me.

Hi Friends!!!!!! When I saw the Dead Computer Contest, my first thought was "This netbook will be mine!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!", and started with the Cyborg project. It was a week working, and the last two nights without sleep. And finally happened! When I was waiting for my netbook, I dreamed carrying the computer everywhere in my backpack... SWEEEEEET!! But, when I opened the box, I saw love at first sight between the netbook and my mother, who had a big smile in her eyes when saw the beautiful computer. As my mother never had a brand new computer for her (she always had to depend of my old notebook or my brother's new one), I gift it to her. If you could have seen the happiness in her eyes eyes when I did that... I only have words of gratitude and respect for you, for all the Instructables team. Hi,I'm creating a show and have just seen an Instructsble "Ghost Knocker" that was posted about 6 years ago.It's exactly what I've been looking for a long time. It's not possible for me to make it due to time constraints etc and want to ask if there is anybody in the community who could make one for me. 'How to thank Instructables' collaboration. Yes, I know I have done something pretty much exactly like this before. But lets be honest, the letters were rubbish, they were boring, and it was all done by me. This one is really going ot be one done by quite a few (14 people including me to be exact. One person per letter) knexers in the Instructables community. But the letters that you have to make, can't be like mine. All boring and flat and dull. They have to be CREATIVE, FUN, AWESOME, COOL! I found it on Google when I typed in GorillazMiko.But wow, just click the link and read the article, it meant so much to me.Here's some:Instructables user GorillazMiko is.. I don't know what to say. He's awesome. He's on the site almost all the time, reporting bugs, putting encouraging comments on every new Instructable that gets posted (that can be up to a hundred, some days), and making cool ones, himself.He does all this, and he's 13 years old. He's trying to get his parents to bring him to the office, the next time they have a family vacation in San Francisco. His parents must be a little confused as to why their son wants to visit some company while they're on vacation.

The site seems to be logging me out as I am browsing the instructables. I tried to re-log in but it wouldn't let me. I am using firefox, just downloaded it to my computer last week since I saw that the site is best viewed with that browser. Really kind of annoying because then I can't view a whole instructable on one page. Dennis
