Safe and Sound

Hey homeboys and girls. This is Bilal checking in from Eric's dining room table. So it's true, I did have a bit of trouble with Airport Security. They made me miss my flight checking out all my crazy scary gadgets. It would be irritating but hey, I'm sure loads of people haven't seen a metronome before. Gasp! It ticks! Arriving in SF would have been quite unsatisfactory without a brief car chase so thankfully security obliged us with a short run with their tiny electric cars. Never fear, Eric, Christy and I made a swift getaway to the hills. Go Volvo go! -BG (thanks for breakfast Eric)

Four Keyed Safe?

Ok, so in a book I recently read, the plot of the story was to find the keys to a safe the boys father had left him for his 13th birthday.  This safe had four keyholes with four matching keys, so I want to replicate this safe.  Any ideas on how to create blueprints for it.  Remember, the safe had four keys on the outside, it's not like one safe, then another, then another. Anything would be helpful. Thanks

safe skin dyes

What is the safest way to dye your skin a different color (temporarily or permanently) without poisoning yourself, and/or getting sick from it? I've stained my fingers with slightly-poisonous malachite, but never got sick from it. in fact, my entire left arm got covered in it, and I felt fine. I never inhaled any, seeing as that's where it's mostly poisonous. so, basically, I just need to know what compounds are safe to apply to skin, and not get poisoned. I need the following 2 colors: Green and Black.

Airsoft Megastore not safe?

When I open Airsoft megastore.com on google chrome, put something into my cart, then hit checkout, Chrome says the site is not safe to input valuable or personal information to. This got me thinking as to why it wouldnt be safe. No security protection against hackers? Or has it been hacked and if I input my credit card info will they be able to steal my info? I just dont want anyone getting ahold of my credit card info and buying stuff... Is ASM a trustworthy site, and Chrome just has a glitch or something that is causing the site to be deemed 'unsafe'? Or is it all a scam? This dillema has stopped me from buying a gun during their black Friday Doorbuster Deals, which was a great deal. Oh well better safe than sorry I guess. Thanks

Is it safe to melt polycarbonate? Answered

I'm interested in trying to do something with the dozens of old CD's and DVD's.  I was thinking of trying to melt the polycarbonate and shape it while it's  Pliable. I understand polycarbonate melts at around 150 degrees C, so it's possible to melt in an oven, but is it safe?  Will it release any toxic fumes, or does it only vent at higher temps? Also, will it deform\shrink as it cools, or will it hold it's shape? Thanks!!!

Food safe pump

Hi everyone! I'm working on a halloween costume where I want to have a container of liquid on my back, a hose from said container running down my left arm and a way todispense the liquid through the hose. Right now the dispensing is the problem. Would a windshield washer pump be reasonably safe to use for something that is going to be consumed? I'd buy a new unused one of course. If that's not a good idea, what would be? I've experimented with a can of compressed air to push the drink out but was not fully satisfied with the result.

Is burning enamel safe?

I know one of the easiest ways to rid the magnet wire of its enamel is by burning it with a butane-lighter. Does this release any toxic fumes, however? I work with magnet wire a lot, and am, quite frankly, tired of stripping it with an Xacto. I'd most likely be burning it outside, so it wouldn't be that bad, I suppose.

Safe component sellers?

First off a Question for site/community, then I will lead into the reasoning/need behind the question. Do you or someone you know in the community have kits you put together to sell yourself or do you utilise a site, that contain the major orange bold parts most of the robots require? If no are there any the community would recommend that are reliable for multiple purchases. For instance I wish to build a Autonomous turret, is there a person who collects the parts and makes kits in this community, or a site that does this?  The kits may consist of things like 1x TTL laser diode,1x LidarLite V2,8x XT connectors  and 2x PWM driver board.     Or do you have a affiliate you use who do kits?.Are there any specific sites you have given on the orange links that you recommend or trust? In the sense that my overseas purchase will be as safe as if I made the purchase from a local retailer from Australia? (eg if a incorrect or broken part arrives they have a system that overseas customers aren't going to be held financially accountable for return of incorrect part or for the replacement/s?   For instance, the  autonomous sentry turret will cost 240euro more buying via separate websites as a  part by part job .Essentially adding $600au because I have to get 8 companies to post 8 separate items with 8 separate international insurance and postage costs added., Clicking external orange links leads me to about 7 or 8 different websites to purchase these items, so I would like if possible a list of those website you trust and recommend for the purchases, or maybe even a site that if kit's are not available that if  I give them a list,  they would be willing to put the effort in (after i prepay of course) to gather and send as one order, rather than what i currently will have to do, and purchase from 8 different stockist. When I say parts, I am referring to the orange parts on any given job, (not the grey ones you can pick up from local hardware/electrical store's but the orange ones) I can go to Amazon( Us version of the site not the Australian version) and make a few purchases for items in bulk, but not being the Australian proxy of the site, I may end up having electrical items disallowed because of local restrictions( eg I have been warned that the  purchase of lasers for domestic/personal use maybe illegal in Australia, if the laser in question can be modified past a certain power output.) REASONING/NEED BEHIND MULTI-PURCHASE/BULK PURCHASES. I have selected 15 robot/autonomous type projects, which I intend to put into one drone of sorts to make myself a remotely controlled android/drone for specific purposes.   it will be a slow process as I teach myself, enlarging power supplies for multi purpose drones, learning about multi system networking instead of expecting one system to control the whole drones etc, it may take me 1 year, it may take me 10 years but the idea's I have can't ever eventuate if i don't begin the journey, so for now, this is the first step.  Essentially I wont need to purchase  every item from the 15 task's( overlap double usage items  etc) but there will be allot of parts which will be single use parts, and allot of parts which I might not even need later on to multi link, but to make the original robot/design I will need them.

Knex Safe (TGKTR2 Entry)

Alright! This is my safe. And a safe safe it is too! Me and a few other people noticed the irony of a knex safe, because you could just take it apart. Not so with this one! I made it with stupidly thick and Hard-to-take-apart walls, so as you would really need to work to get it open. The only piece you could break off are the pistons coming out the side, but then you've ruined the mech, and it wont work at all. However, there is a snag. The actual pin that goes into the door could not be finished on time. Everything else is here though, and I hope to get it finished up very soon. Sorry about that! The deadline sneaked up on me... So thats prettymuch it! Hope you like it. I have a video of the mechanism, but its not uploading. I should have one up tomorrow. EDIT: For all you folks bugging me to post (you know who you are...), let me give you the scoop. I am currently building a new safe. It should be stronger than the last, smaller, and cleaner. Please be patient, I will post when I can, bugging me about it wont make the time go any quicker. Thank you.

knex bank style safe

This is my new knex safe. it is called a bank styled because it looks like one and has an extreemly thick back wall made up of 5 layers of knex. yes i did just say 5 layers!!! however it does have some bad points, i made the mechinism to big and almost stops the door opening sou you have to push or pull it to get it open .second  it only has 16 combinations. third the door is easy to take of its hinges. fourth it has little room inside as the mechinism takes up a hell of alot of room.if you want instructions you can either heve istructions for this or saw the ride.

How to heat a tent- safely?

While I am a a hands-on person, that mostly extends to art and sculpture rather than engineering. Therefore, I thought I ought to bring this question to people with a little bit more knowhow in that area. See, with the cold winter months coming on camping is becoming a little more arduous. More to the point, heating a tent safely is a real problem. I don't trust gas powered heaters....but there's not a whole lot of alternatives out there. So I was wondering if anyone here could think of a way to safely heat a tent for a prolonged period of time. Preferably without gas, electricity, or risk of fire.

electric gun......... Safe? + airsoft

Could you make a coil gun, instead of shooting bolts it shoots a nail. The tip of the nail is dulled. When you fire the nail accelerates to a really fast speed, hit's an airsoft pellet, the pellet goes flying, the nail head gets stuck by a mechanism (barrier). would this be safe, or be a really really bad idea and the pellet won't get that fast. Just asking cause i've always wanted to make some sort of cool electronic gizmo shaped like a gun that does cool stuff, like a coil gun, or maybe makes stuff glow or something, I dunno, something cool ;)

How to safely jump a transistor? Answered

So I want to default the fans in this Xbox 360 I'm fixing to run at a faster speed.  Some people just borrow 12 volts from someplace else on the board and wire it directly to the fans.  I'd like to avoid this, since A) it seems like kind of a hack job, and B) I'd like the fans to run somewhat less than full bore since it's noisy, maybe 7-9 volts.  I've seen some vague mentions of either jumping or grounding transistors to achieve this, but I don't really know that much about transistors to do it safely. This thread here says that by grounding Pin 1 of the transistor (which is on the far left I believe?) with a resistor, you can change the voltage of the fans safely.  So where should I ground to?  Or does that simply mean bridge Pin 1 and Pin 4 with a resistor?  This guy here just bridged the pin on the far right to the top pin (Pin 3 to Pin 4 I believe) with no resistors involved.  Would that method be better? And if so, how could I step down the voltage, just a simple resistor as well? Also, I've figured out that B, E, and C refer to Base, Emitter, and Collector.  But what does that really mean in terms of practical application?  And the BCP51 transistor that is used in the Xbox has two pins labelled as "C".  I'm confused.  Here's the datasheet for the BCP51 for reference. Anyways, any help is appreciated.

How to ride DH safely

1. Always wear a helmet, wear body armor as well when needed (how much depends on course, and what you find to be suitable) at all times. 2. Look ahead of you. The faster you are going the further ahead you should look. 3. Stay focused and try not to concentrate or think while you are going at high speed, this tends to slow you down and/or cause accidents...practice alot and everything should come naturally with flow! - Before a run get a song or something that gets you "in the mood" in the back of your mind, and go for it - before you know it you'll be through the track/race no problem...you should all ready know the track turn for turn before doing this. 4. Make sure your tires have appropriate tread on them and are not cracking/damaged 5. Check your bike over in the parking lot before going up the lift. Ride it around and check the brakes and tire pressures. 6. Get enough sleep before riding and especially before racing. 7. Don't drink or get high before racing or riding (you can do it, and seen it done, but if you want to win or want to be safe...don't) 8. Stay relaxed and dialed in on the bike, be as relaxed as possible mentally before you start a race but be pumped physically at the same time. 9. Know the track as well as you can before racing it (the later steps will go into greater detail on how to do this). 10.Learn to 'pump through the ruff stuff'-pull up on the face and push down on the back side of bumps/rocks/landing trannys, etc... 11. Stay light on the back brake as much as you can and try to lock it as rarely as possible if at all...it may cause you to wash out. Only lock the brake on extremely sharp turns or to get into a turn if a cuttie won't be efficient enuff. 12. Try to go as fast as you can when you can-->PEDAL PEDAL PEDAL like a bat out of hell in the open or out of turns when/where ever you can. 13. Practice "cutties". 14. Buy the "Fundamentals" DVD available here on pinkbike.com or at most bike shops and study it...take notes if you have to. You will find how to do "cutties" on the DVD as well as many many more "fundamentals" for DH riding-----> BUY IT, you will be glad you did. 15.Off camber: make sure you weight your outside foot and stand the bike on the egde of the tire, that way it will stick 16. Rock gardens: the faster the better- you will bobble across the top and be on you way before you know it, rather than getting packed down and ending up with major arm pump. 17. Braking: only ever do real braking in straight lines, you can brake on corners but do it conservatively and only to slide around sharp turns better as it may cause you to wash out as mentioned above. The less you brake the faster you go and fast riding is a winning formula- think about that. 18. >>>Don't Crash It can have you out for the rest of the season and that can prevent you from winning races----obviously. Just dont ride like an idiot and attempt things that will probably end in you getting hurt. Ride within your limits! 19. (Words of Pro Down hiller Steve Peat from the "fundamentals" DVD mentioned above) "Stay as light as you can on the bike and pump through the back side of rocks or rough sections as a skateboarder pumps a vert ramp" to gain or maintain speed and momentum. 20. Trust your tires throughout the course. If you believe and have faith in your tires grip, chances are they will have grip fine. If you don't trust your tires and BELEIVE that they wont grip and you will probably fall, chances are they won't grip and as a result you will indeed fall. 21. Walk the track and look for new lines or which lines are best to take and are the fastest 22. Tuck when ever possible to conserve energy. Pedal hard in the open spots before the ruff stuff then tuck and pump and repeat. 23. True your wheels to increase your speed and pedalling efficiency 24. Don't use big fat mud bog tiresfor DH(i.e. 2.6"-3.0") EVER...unless your DH course happens to be a downhill mud swamp 25. Learn to brake with out losing traction , this helps in straight line braking before turns. 26.Push yourself in the warmups, (not stupidly) and give 95% of what your maximum was when you were pushing yourself, in the actual race. This way you wont fall, but you are still hauling a$$. 27.Practice shift points, it is very important to be in the right gear at the right time or youll be sucking wind trying to pedal a flat stretch in too high of a gear. On a fast stretch where you need to begin pedaling to maintain that speed, youll be spinning out. Know what gear to start in and what gear you need to be in at every point in the track. 28. If all else fails look fast across the finish line where everyones watching. 29.When learning, set your fork/and or shock harder than you would normally, this will teach you to use to body rather than relying upon the bike. 30. Try to pick memory markers for your self; tree stump, odd looking rock, etc... and break the course down in your head so you can become very quick overall. 31. Practice simple skills such as manuals (good for roots), Hops, roots/rocks) and of course cutties 32. Commit to berms, brake on a berm and it will end it tears, aim to "rail the berm" to do this - hit the berm at a speed that isnt too fast (this will cause you to slip up it) and not to slow (you will slip down and is slower duh) The ideal speed should carry you round as g forces will push you into the berm. 34.Take a couple of the "Learn to race" clinics offered before many of the sanctioned races. 35.Play with your set up, everything from seat angle, to brake postioning- it can all make a big difference. The more comfortable you are on the bike the faster youll go, the steepness can be different for each course(for instance) so tweak it a little each time but dont EVER change your entire setup before a race. 36.When walking the course, look back up at it. You will find new lines looking up rather then down. 37. While riding (including in the air) never squeeze the seat with your knees. This makes it impossible to flow smoothly, and makes you a ridged weight to be tossed around at the mercy of the trail. It may feel safer, but it will cause you to wreck and lose speed when you would not otherwise. In the air also, it you pinch your seat then you can not compress the lip and extend for landing. Also you can not whip and prepare for upcoming turns and bumps. The ONLY time that pinching your seat would be appropriate is when doing a suicide no hander which, if you can do it without loosing speed, is a cool way to entertain the crowd. 38.Learn to crash,it is an important skill to have that will save you alot of trouble in the long run. 39. Work your way up to the big stuff. Even if you are a good rider always warm up on an easier trail then go for the harder stuff you set out to conquer. Same for riding in general- dont go tackle the hardest trail on the mountain without first being able to do the easy ones---this may sound somewhat obvious but alot of people just cant get this bit of logic into their skulls without being told directly. 40. If the drop doesn't have a great tranny, hit it with more speed. this will cause you to have increased foreward momentum and less downward ( static ) momentum and make the landing smoother. let your bike go off the drop first. 41. If you are in the air ( off a jump drop or whatever... ) and your back end starts to dip too much, tap your back brake, this will cause the front end to dip forward. ( this is used all the time in Motocross) WARNING: Use this with caution and only when its a neccesity. 42. XC riding will make you faster. I always love watching the out of shape downhillers crossing the finish line and nearly having a hear attack. The more tired you are the more mistakes you make and the more likely you are to get hurt. Pedal! Then pedal more! 43. Train like a mofo. During my DH racing times I would spend the summer mornings doing 5-8 runs on local dh trails then dirt jumping and XC riding in the afternoon= Legs that were strong/fast as hell. Dont forget to train in the off season too. 44. Develop a training schedule not just for biking and racing but to keep in shape in general. The more you ride the better you will be. Like Ito was saying, do as much of each mountain biking discipline as possible with emphasis on Down hill. Cedric Gracia wins because he is a great all around rider as is Minaar. 45.Commit to the front end of your bike in corners. Watch Sam Hill, no-one does it better. NOTE: BEFORE DOING THIS, make sure you have practiced it and know how to do this technique at speed (Note is courtesy of Iceboy) 46. Don't pedal like a mad man out of the gate. Pedal, but let your bike gather speed and focus on keeping it. Racing comes down to one thing - exit speed , in particular your speed out of corners. Wait until you feel the flow before you start pushing it harder. If you pedal too hard from the start you'll flip in 60 seconds and get back on your bike a go harder to make up the time. Then you'll flip again. Speaking from experience on this one! It's all about being 'zen'. At least that's what all the dudes who keep beating me are telling me. Learn how to go as fast as you can through turns and sections to know your limits. 47. Make your riding FEEL slow when you are going fast! If you feel fast it's because the trail is catching up with you too quickly for you to process all the info in a comfortable time frame. Probably because you are too busy worrying about going fast and not feeling the flow. Look out, you are about to flip. It's that zen thing you're missing. 48. Practice having FLOW in all your riding, down hill (speed as well as flow), Dirt jumps (flow), XC(speed and flow), what ever (FLOW)... 49.Dont be intimidated by other riders, stay focused on what you have to do not what they are doing, if they crash pay atention to why, and try not to make the same mistake. 50. Learn to go over jumps at as high a speed as possible with out overshooting or losing speed by going too high. Jumps and learning to land them without thinking is a VERY beneficial skill to have... (if you want to stay low coming of jumps learn to soak up the lip...you will go just as far but you'll stay lower) 51. When doing a j-hop, bunny hop or going up the face of a jump don't forget to push into the ground and then come up to get more air. 53. The rougher the place you are riding the more ralaxed and flowy you should be trying to go . 54. Spend time at the track and just watch other riders(especially how they are going through the tricky sections that you are having trouble with), see what they are doing wrong and try to not make the same mistakes, also watch for where the speed spots of the section are. 55.Read Brian Lopes's & Lee McCormick's book " Mastering Mountain Biking Skills", this book covers everything you need to know in great detail from top to bottom, it is with out a doubt the most comprehensive guide for how to ride/race mountain bikes and how to handle and practice everything involved in riding. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND IT, and would say that it is the BIBLE for Mountain Biking! 56.Look where you want to go not at what you are trying to avoid. if you stare at the tree you are trying to go around instead of the trail around it you will more often than not hit the tree. 57. As mentioned previously-The faster you are going the further ahead you should look, always look at what lies further ahead when riding downhill AND avoid staring at your front wheel--staring at your front wheel will slow you down drastically and often will lead to crashing. 58.To re-inerate what Harding.Thomas was saying; do not focus on obstacles like stumps logs and rocks, because thats were you will go instead of where you want to go. In essence, keep an eye on where you want to go and you will go there. Do not look down at what your riding over, let your bike deal with the terrain, thats what its for. This is a very important tip to increasing speed and improving flow. 59. Before you go riding, I find that a simple 10 minute warm up on flat land and practicing tight turns and j-hops helps loosen you up and calms you down If you have any other tips, tell me! ill post them in the list.

Trying not to be history. 12VDC 500ma power supply to 12VDC 300ma computer fan

I have a project in mind which would utilize a 12VDC 300ma computer fan. I would like to use an old peripheral wall plug style power supply. I have one rated at 12V 500ma which I think would work fine.  Problem: How do I determine +/- if I cut the male plug off of the power supply without shorting out my apartment building or spending the weekend in intensive care? The cord is marked along one lead with a gray "dash".

Movie Cliché: Hidden Wall Safe

So I am actually a bit surprised that there is no instructable on how to make a hidden wall safe. More or less I am wanting to build a hidden shelf area akin to that of a hidden wall safe. IE: you have a picture on the wall that moves in some way to reveal the hidden space behind it. Just wondering why no one has done it before? So 100 points to who can guess what my next project is :-P

what is a good (mostly safe!) photoshop viewer? Answered

I photoshop on school sometimes, and save the pictures to my USB stick. but i want to see them at home, without buying adobe photoshop. now, i know its just a google search away, but i dont really trust that (virusses, to say the least) so im looking for someone who has checked one, and can confirm its good... btw, im not into alot of options (no need) windows(XP) viewer has enough for me, so anything similar for photoshop will be enough :)

Food-safe permanent repair (re-join them) of 2 tines of metal (stainless steel?) whisk/beater of electric stand-mixer?

I have a 34 year old stand mixer (Sunbeam Mixmaster) which uses 2 separate beaters (whisks) to mix ingredients in a bowl while it rotates. The beaters each have 4 tines which are joined with a rivet where they intersect at the tip of the beater/whisk (see photos. The broken beater is the one on the right).  On one of the beaters two of the tines have come apart (broken) at the rivet so I can't re-rivet to repair.  I believe the metal is steel (maybe stainless although there is some rust on the metal - they ARE 34 years old).  What can I do to permanently re-attach the broken tines at the tip, that is food-safe and doesn't add bulk to that spot? (the beaters interlock with each other while rotating so they have to be the same height or else they won't interlock correctly while spinning).  The mixer works fine otherwise and I am reluctant to buy a new one because the comparable ones that are available are built much more cheaply than this one was (very flimsy, lots of plastic instead of solid metal body) and I don't want to buy an expensive, large and bulky Kitchenaid-type mixer which is more than I need for the amount of baking that I do.  Thanks for any suggestions!
