Satellite images.

Does anybody know where i can get highly detailed satellite images? Higher than google. Google has this thing that you can pay $20 to get better quality, but to me that seems like a rip off. Anyone know any places to get better pictures? Thanks

Watch out for falling satellites

Watch out for falling satellitesWith no one at the wheel, should we be worried about the large US spy satellite now headed for a crash landing?US spy satellite 193 is predicted to de-orbit less than gracefully in Feburary or early March. The chances of it actually hitting a populated area are exceedingly small, but perhaps you can catch a few micrograms of it using Kiteman's How to catch a star Instructable. What is happening? An out-of-control US spy satellite will crash to Earth in the coming months, government officials say. The satellite is large enough that remnants are likely to survive atmospheric re-entry and strike the Earth, sometime in late February or early March, says Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council. Is that normal?"This is relatively routine in that satellites de-orbit all the time," says Johndroe. Pieces of uncontrolled debris heavier than two tonnes -- mostly discarded rocket stages -- crash to Earth as often as once every three weeks, says Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer and launch observer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Many discarded pieces retain some power, so that controllers on Earth can guide them to a point far from human habitation, usually using a final dive into an ocean. In 2001, Russian space officials broke up the old Mir space station in this way over the South Pacific. That's not the case for this US one, however."Obviously, we want to take a look at the potential for it to land in a populated area," says Johndroe. What are the chances of it crashing through my roof?Exceedingly slim, says McDowell. Remember that some 70% of the Earth is water, and most lands are void of people. "There is no reason for people to get alarmed about it," he says.According to the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office, there have been no confirmed instances of serious property damage or injury caused by crashing debris in 40 years.

DTH satellite receiver problem

I have a DTH satellite receiver which has a burnt SMPS power supply (image attached). I replaced the burnt components but again when powered with 220V ac supply to test the output voltages the same components burnt again within a few seconds. I could not figure out what is the actual faulty part. If anyone has any suggestion please feel free to answer. My second problem is the satellite receiver board (image attached) has 6 pins for power connection but I could not figure out what voltage is to be applied to which pin. So I was unable to use a separate power supply for the receiver board. The part number can be seen from the image itself. Please look at the receiver board and help me if anyone has any idea about this board. I tried searching in google with the part number but could not find the same board. Please help me. Any suggestion is welcome. Satellite receiver: Hicway ali M3328C(10039)-11

Satellite to Radio to Pneumatic Valve

I want to receive some sort of satellite signal with a radio and then use the data I receive to control a pneumatic system to replicate a heart beating. I have been talking around with some people who know a bit about radios and the such but haven't gotten much conclusive help.  I would like to build as much of this as I can myself, the entire radio and everything, though I only have about a month to do it. A DIY radio kit paired with an Arduino might be the answer due to time restraints.  What i've learned so far is that I probably want it to be a tunable AM radio. Whether or not I should build that myself from scratch, build a DIY kit, or just purchase one, I am not sure. How to then interface that into a system to then control a pneumatic system, I have no idea other than the obvious arduino. Lastly, I don't need any special signal from the satellite. I really just need to receive a voltage from the radio. Though, hooking into a satellite with an onboard atomic clock so that i can then display the time as well would be great. I am going to keep doing research, though if anyone here can lend a helping hand I would be very appreciative!

Space Trash Crowds Orbiting Satellites

Two or three times a day, a satellite circling Earth narrowly misses destruction by an orbital hailstorm of junk sweeping the busy super highways of space.A spreading cloud of shrapnel from the collision of two satellites earlier this month is making wrecks for working spacecraft around Earth all but inevitable, analysts warn. As the ninth significant crack-up in two years -- including a punctured nuclear satellite -- the wreckage of Iridium 33 and Cosmos 2251 is fostering a chain reaction of collisions that puts billions of dollars of spacecraft and manned space flights at risk.Full article and really cool slideshow: Harmless Debris on Earth Is Devastating in Orbit - Wall Street Journal.via benjaneer.

Would I be able to extend an amplified antenna's range with a satellite dish?

Hi all, I have a small portable T.V. that will only work when tethered to a converter box. I noticed that when I attached a rabbit ear antenna to the "TV OUT" port on the box, I was able to get signal from the box wirelessly from a few feet away. I had a crazy idea that if I bought an amplified antenna, replaced the LNB on a satellite dish with it, and aimed it at the satellite closest to Earth, I would be able to have the converter box signal bounce back to the T.V. Is this even possible?

Using the IRDA port on my toshiba satellite 2520cds

I got this old gem a month ago from a guy that recently and obviously needed a new one, but it worked this long surprisingly for power points. I must admit that it runs decently fast with xp and not having turned anything but system restore off. It's got a 333mhz amd 3D processor which I want to try upgrading with a k6 down the road as it IS removable. 96mb of ram and a lousy 4gig hd that slows the whole system down. But that is barely important. I had a swell idea of utilizing the irda port on the back for controlling it via a tv remote or any I might have kicking around which I have plenty of. Also, I wanted to be able to CONTROL my tv, vcr, dvd player, ect with it in itself aswell.Google didn't help me much this round as apparently there is software (which I did try) avalible but it's meant for home made or certain commercial infrared ports that plug in via serial, usb and perhaps parellel that I saw. I also saw a hint of what seems to be that the built in irda sensor in most laptops aren't able to receive commands from most remotes for learning or controlling it due to the filtered out bands. But they are supposedly capable of sending commands just fine. Now this is a OLD OLD laptop and there could be a chance that it can receive the commands too? Even still, you could pull it apart and modify the sensor to accept signals couldn't you? I'm looking for something to do with this laptop and this seems perfectly suitable for it as the screen is older and has that "motion blur" effect to it and so makes playing nes games a bit hard :-P. Sorry for the long post, but hey, if someone could help me with this, it would certainly make me happy.

Is there a better way than gyros and compass? Answered

Hi All, First of all I'll describe the project I'm working on Then I'll Highlight my probelm 1) Description:     - Now There's a boat travelling on a river. There's a satellite Receiver on the boat so passengers can watch T.V. While Travelling. The river is not straight and there're situations where the boat needs to turn 180 degrees. What I was trying to do is to have a gyro or compass beside the Satellite Receiver and detect when the satellite is not pointing to the right direction (due to the boat going on cureves & turning 180 degrees) and undo that rotations so I can keep the Satellite receiver pointing to the right direction ('cause if not so then they'll lose signal and No T.V any more :() 2) The Probelm:    - I tried to use Gyro ArduImu V3 but the readings aren't helping much .. some times it's wrong and the yaw drifts a lot :(    - I tried to use compass but it's not tilt compensated .. meaning that if the compass is n't on horizontal position it'll get different readings! and when they pass below some high Power Electrical lines the compass Gets crazy :( I hope you got the description & the probelm. Is there anyway else to do it? Or if there's any recommendations I'll be grateful :) Thanks in advance anyways  kind Regards --- Ahmed
