Fractal Art Contest -- 2007

Check out the winners of the 2007 Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest -- they're absolutely gorgeous. These are just a couple of my favorites.Back in the 90's I had one of those zooming fractal screensavers, and could spend entirely too long watching it swoop through the Mandelbrot set. Fantastic stuff. Thanks to BoingBoing for the link.

Change power options for certain programs running?

I was wondering if it was possible to have specific power options for programs such as anti virus or media player. I'm using a windows 7 Home Premium. Both software is by microsoft incase that matters. I wish to have the computer recognize those programs and let the computer still run while the lid is closed. I don't want  to waste power with the screen on uselessly, and screensavers aren't suitable for me because i do browse youtube quite often and they start to bug me.

LAN Party Suggestions

So I'm having a new years LAN party this year. 14 hours of pure gaming should prove to be a fun night. I have a 50 inch plasma in my basement where we will be having the party. I want to make the best use of this screen by putting some "stats" (for lack of a better word) on the screen. Obviously the biggest problem with stats is that every games is different and there is no standard protocol to be used. I am looking to the instructables community for ideas as to what I can put on this screen. Some ideas that I had:  - DHCP table  - Midnight countdown (its new years)  - Starfield Screensaver Thanks!

Running a computer 24/7? Answered

Hi. I'm trying to set up a server for a game me and my friends like to play on. Oddly enough, getting the server to work isn't the problem. The server works great. However, I'd like the computer to run the server 24/7 (or until I tell it to stop) I've gone into the power saving properties and changed it so the computer never hibernates/goes on standby/shuts down. I've also made it so that the computer never shuts down the display, or the hard disks. However, when I leave it overnight, I wake up to find that it has gone to it's screensaver, and when I wake it up, I find myself back at the login screen. (Despite checking a box telling it NOT to do that.) Also, when I do log in again, the program running the server has been shut down.  Is there something I'm missing here? How can you make a computer stay wide awake 24/7? I'm running windows XP by the way.

Arduino Toy with LED indicator; LED, off, no use for 1hr; LED, fades in/out, after 20min; BLinks to button

Sorry about the question title.  Long time listener first time caller.  I'm developing a toy for my nephew.  He's really into lit objects.  So I'm trying to write this code in arduino for a basic toy. My nephew doesn't talk much and I thought maybe this would be a great way of him telling us how he feels.  So I'm thinking of creating a basic LED-based indicator.  I was going to connect 3 buttons to LEDS: red, yellow, and green. Dependent on how he feels, he would press the buttons.  But due to being a kid, his attention span is very short.  To keep him engaged I was thinking about adapting the "screensaver mode" and having the toy use minimal batt power and pulse peacefully in and out.   IF he's not around, i just wanted it to turn off by itself. Then any one of the buttons would be a failsafe to turn it back on again.   I'm new to arduino and would love to hear of any suggestions, recommendations, hatemail, chain letters, anything that would elucidate coding.   I would really appreciate it.  Thank you so much. Grateful, R

Damn you service pack three!

Well I finally gave in to the little pop-up box in the corner of the screen and installed Xp service pack three and it messed me about something shocking... A list of issues: - The quazi-vista theme I was running wet itself completely, now replaced with Zune theme - Firefox three got very upset and now has a mint theme because it had a bog standard theme that looked similar - The startup screen (login bit) and the login screen for password protection on knocking off screensaver is going mad, both do work but have some bizarre half breed theme on the go - The computer ticked and banged for ages - Multiple other weird ones - Oh startup programs decided to appear, suddenly I was inundated by FF, messenger, skype, media player and photoshop all opening on startup rather than just wireless G-utility... The odd three are on my taskbar list, some connection... Skype, I have no clue. Before the restart everything worked really oddly, I caught on that it was time because it refused me the ability to install programs and generally messed around. On the upside I hit a couple of sites and the combination of a less heavyweight theme and a ram optimiser majigger have got the computer running faster, now I'm just clawing back all my old settings. Slowly.

Digg.com founder validates veracity of Instructables

There is a web show called Diggnation. (You can also download it through Tivo). The show is two guys sitting on a couch, with laptops, talking about highly rated articles on Digg.com. The guys are Kevin Rose: founder of Digg, and Alex Albrecht: Kevin's co-host on "Screensavers" which ran on the defunct TechTV Network. They are both funny guys, talk freely - usually with the help of a few beers - and just have a lot of fun talking about these strange, cool, or funny articles. Warning: It is a web show so if you go there, realize you may hear the f-word and some topics are risquè. On Episode 234: "Why Your Mom Should Not Watch Diggnation" one story was "Best Man Rigs Newlyweds’ Bed To Tweet During Sex". At one point they question the veracity of the man's claim saying they think he may have just wrote the tweets, and not actually rigged the bed to send tweets. This portion starts around 41:00 Kevin: (maybe it is) "just writing, unless he is ultra geeky. Who is going to devise a pressure plate with the power to send out ..." Alex: "He based it on an article. He said 'Before I go any further I should say 90% (of the tech is ripped from http://bit.ly/kvALJ) ...' " Alex clicks on link Kevin: "Oh it's an Instructables article. Done. I believe it. " Alex: "The Twittering Office Chair" It was cool that he immediately believed it was real after finding out the tech came from Instructables.

TARDIS Console Desk/Entertainment Center/Networking Area

In a few months, I'm going to be in a new place somewhere, and have three active computers at once, not counting laptops, and the husks of old machines. I am also running out of space for all of these things. I was trying to come up with design project to one-up my other home improvement geek friends from college, and it hit me: A TARDIS Console. Take three cheapo desks, cut the surfaces in half diagonally, and remount them on a slight angle in a hexagon. Mount the computer towers on odd segments, keyboards, phone, modem, router, etc on evens, sling a monitor on one of the segments, and throw some random sci-fi crap around it. Throw a big light or something in the center, leave some cables loose everywhere, and put a layer of appropriate paint on it. Instant TARDIS console. That's the basics of it. It wouldn't take too much money, but a bit of time to do properly, especially the angled stuff. Add a little extra cash and a lot of extra time, and maybe use plexiglass and put some LED's as backlight. Put old circuit boards under the plexiglass, maybe use an old laptop with nothing but screensaver on it on one of the panels, and put some extra time into decorating and it'll look great. Maybe even build in an amp and an old Yamaha keyboard for fun. This is just some speculation and a bit of boredom on my part. I just thought I'd throw this out there.
