Sand sculptures always amaze me. The good ones, I mean. Mine never progressed much beyond noble walls that were crushed by high tide, but it's great to see that other people kept up with it and can get such amazing results from such a finicky material."Fairy tales and legends" is the theme of this year's World Sand Sculpture Festival now underway at the Tottori Sand Dunes in Tottori prefecture. On display (until May 31) are 19 massive works crafted by world-class sculptors from ten nations. The artists used around 2,700 tons of sand and took about two weeks to complete their works. Here SuperNaturale features a curiosity cabinet of crochet figures, thus illustrating the basic elements which combine to form sculptural crochet.Much like a traditional Wunderkammer, the pieces are divided into subgroups, each of which explores a certain variable.I'm struck by the beauty obtained by using simple stitches and one color to make a striking, strangely biologically-evocative piece of artcraft. It's obviously left me with a loss for words.

I am looking for any information about fixing a neon sculpture we purchased in 2002. You folks seem pretty technically astute so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I live on a fairly rural island, the one sign shop here told me they would fix it if I could find parts. (They tested the bulb, which is fine, so it's either the transformer or the power cord). I know that's not very do-it-yourself, but I don't know anything about neon. It broke when I ran the vacuum over the power supply cord, I remember it made a "pop" noise. Anyway, the piece is mostly metal with a small (20" long) neon bulb attached. The transformer is only about 2" long, 1/2" wide. I tried to replace the cord from radio shack, they couldn't be sure they sold me the right one, so I'm still stuck. The dc output from the old cord is 12v, 500mA. The company that manufactured it was Neon Specialties, the cord also says "Moser & Co" on it. I couldn't find anything on the Internet. Anybody have a source for replacement parts? Or any advice? The piece has a lot of sentimental value to my husband, that's why I would like to fix it. Thank you!

Hey guys im reading this sci-fi novel. "Spook Country" there is a cool idea in it. the technology sounds just possible. A computer games artist has made a three d picture of the dead river phoenix which can be viewed via a helmet and uses gps to have the image only appear when you stand near where he died.So you can walk around the non-existen dead actors body..What a notion. Is it possible.

Living in the bay area in California, I have access to now in Lake Tahoe, but we get no fluffy stuff to look out at in the morning. I love being able to wear light jackets in January, but sometimes I miss getting all bundled up and sledding or making Easter Island style snowguys on the front yard.So seeing this massive snow sculpture from China makes me want to just hit the slopes for a few weeks. Workers sculpt "Romantic Feelings", which will debut at the 20th International Snow Sculpture Art Expo in Harbin of Heilongjiang Province, China, on Dec 17. "Romantic Feelings", measuring approximately 115 feet high and 656 feet long, is designed to be the world's largest snow sculpture. Mike Rea makes amazing wooden sculptures of items that recreate the form and absolutely none of the function, but that doesn't stop them from being wonderful pieces to look at. Whether it's a set of musical instruments, a tank, a mech walker, or many other things, his work deserves a good look.Fecal Face (a great art site from SF) does a nice interview with loads of pics here.via Make

Jennifer Maestre makes some insanely cool stuff with colored pencils. The pencils aren't used to create the art, they are a part of it. Sea urchins and fantastical creatures get reimagined as colorful spiky sculptures and to think that she didn't even go to an art school until she was in her 30's. Check out the interview with Jennifer that has lots of cool new works as well as her own site that has lots of pieces from the past few years.See more pencil art here.via Neatorama

I would like to make a wire sculpture that is as intricate as I possibly can make it. I want to use very small gauge wire (don't really care what material), cut small pieces and connect them together. For a visual, I did a (sloppy) sketch of the idea and attached the photo, and it would continue to expand from there. There will be multiple joints close to each other, done one at a time. I want to create in on the fly, I will not have any pre-formed pattern. I've been looking at soldering, brazing, welding and I don't see anything that would fit perfectly for what I want to do. I believe the heat from the next joint would destroy any previous joints. The idea of simply zapping a joint and quickly moving on appeals to me, but I don't mind being more patient in order to do it right. Are there any techniques that I’m missing? Anybody have any ideas? Maybe I’ll just use superglue…

I would like to make a large garden sculpture of a woman lying down. I mainly want the head, neck, shoulders and one arm and foot of concrete. The rest would be soil and plants to build up the body and a ground covered blanket for covering parts of her. I want it to be at least life size, preferably larger. Should I make a solid concrete head? What would I use to cast it?

I am making a sculpture that has a 2" o.d. copper tube running down the middle. At the bottom of the tube I need to have a small door about 1" x 1" that will raise and lower on the outside of the tube to let balls enter and fill the tube. Does anyone know how I can do this? What type of motor, etc to use. Thanks, Marc

Ok, this might sound as a stupid idea, but i was reading about Papercrete today which sounds fascinating and i will have a try on it. But then this other weird idea came up to me.....i want to make something like a giant rock, and i thought perhaps instead of using papercrete, what if i made the whole giant rock with just paper pulp and then cover it up with cement so it could be waterproof ? is that possible? please give me your thoughts

Here are some pictures of my latest project I felt like sharing. a kynetic sculpture that moves & bends in ALL directions in random movements or complicated (semi random) patterns. it is made out of acrylic, aluminum and stainless. it runs on three electromotors. two motors to move the arm around and one for the highspeed rotating disc at the end. (disc is actual a flashlight frisbee:). everything was fabricated by myself. title: Looking 4 Life enjoy! pictures by Ingebor Lukkien sculpture by Kees Klaassen, In Kees of Metals

Sculptor Jen Maestre's super-cool sculptures reportedly were initially inspired by sea urchins. The artist takes colored pencis, saws the sharpened tips off, and drills a hole through each one individually so they can be stitched together. Talk about dangerous art!'''Link''' via the Daily Mail

Dutch artist Wieke Somers has created a series of sculptures that are made with human ashes. She uses a 3D printer to assemble them, although there's no detail about the construction process in this article. Much more attention is given to the reasoning why in a classic artist statement: dutch design studio wieke somers does not want to discard the many benefits of technological innovation and its inherent mentality and the joy and will to create. instead she wants to make a statement about the current state of affairs in design and our conviction that we need a new view on what is necessary in the 21st century. her project 'consumer or conserve' evaluates this notion of a second-life. she considers, how human ashes can be reused by means of rapid prototyping or 3D printing, so that we may afford someone a 'second life' as a rocking chair, vacuum cleaner, perhaps even a toaster? would we become more attached to these objects if this was the case? would our willingness to pay more for a product increase if it is made from human tissue or ashes? I'd guess the answer is "no." Little bit creepy. Then again, Ed Headrick from Frisbee had his remains mixed in with a bunch of discs after he passed on so who knows? wieki somers: consume or conserve via inhabitat

I have been sculpting in wax and then making plaster or silicone molds to make multiples of some fairly detailed model toys. I intended to then pour in liquid latex and create wiggly bendy toys, but unfortunately latex doesn't dry inside the molds. It doesn't seem to matter how long I leave them when I open them lost of the latex is still liquid. I am looking for a replacement. Something durably bendy and low cost that will dry in a mostly enclosed mold. Any Ideas? Please bare in mind I am in the UK.

I want to make a sculpt someting for my wall around 10' x 3'. I want it to be large, so I need something lightweight. I want it to have nooks with little shelves so it needs to be strong and not flake. I also would like something that would not easily deteriorate. I don't mind putting planks or something under the sculpted matterial. I was also thinking I might cover it with plaster or someting to prevent flaking but i'm worried that might make it too heavy. Anyone know anything about this?
