Seeds

Hey guys, finally a different question today. I'm trying to get some seeds sprouting and I put them in paper towel (wet of course) and they've been in there for a few days and still nothing. Are they duds? Sorry for the confusion everyone, I'm not growing weed (right now), these are seeds from a really hot pepper that my cousine grows in his garden down in the states.

Are there any fruit trees that will grow "true" from the fruit's seeds? Answered

For example, an apple tree grown from the seed of an apple from the grocery store will have a very small probability of ever producing an edible apple. Are there any varieties of fruit that can grow productive offspring from their seeds? In other words, can I go into the grocery store and buy some fruit, eat the fruit, plant the seeds, and in a few years sell fruit back to grocery store?

Free vegetable seeds (UK)

Just an FYI for Brits who fancy stuff for free; you can get a pack of free seeds by signing up at http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/digin/ They're not super-exciting, but they're free, and there are some interesting recipes that use the vegetables. (You have to give your postal address to get the seeds, but not your email address.)

Growing roses from seeds

I have a pair of nice, perfumed roses that are getting quite old now. This season one of them produced a nice fruit containing 8 seeds. It is a light pink variety and I also obtained some seeds from a white perfumed rose. Last time I did this was with my grandfather and I was still a little kid LOL The common way of multiplying your roses is by grafting them onto a fresh stem of some wild or low quality roses. The reason for this is quite simple: A "manufacturered rose" is usually designed to look pretty and show certain other features, but not be a strong plant. When using seeds it all comes down to how strong the original mother rose was, not the stock it was crafted on. In some cases you end up with a little bush rose in other cases with something that grows so high that the stem will break in strong winds. But for the lucky few cases that do work good you are paid off with a beautiful new rose. For next couple of weeks the seeds will stay in the fridge to aid germination but if it works out I will take pics of the progress and document it all in an Instructable - but it will be about a year to finnish as roses grow slow from seeds. If I don't forget it again I will also show how to graft one rose onto another to get a bush with different varieties in one.

Project for Children

I am looking to do a fairly simple children's gardening project at a Green Fair that is being held in March.  In the past, the group has had the kids transplant seedlings.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I think that there must be much better "quick" projects.

Seed Bomb Vending Machine

Seed bombs are little balls of clay, compost, and seeds that you can toss into a vacant lot to try and get some new plants to grow. It's a guerrilla gardening technique and you can see how to make one here. If you just want to pick one up and live in San Francisco you can now buy them from a vending machine. These were designed by Common Studio from LA and repurpose old gumball machines with the benefits going to Project H Design. First Seedbomb Vending Machine Lands in San Francisco!

How to start poppies from seed?

I'm hoping to get info on starting poppies from seeds. Some questions are: What temperatures are best to start the seeds? Is it best to stratify the seeds first? I have been told to plant seeds where they won't be moved-for moving them can kill em. A few years ago I had to remove poppy plant because it was growing in line of septic line-which had to be replaced. So this was apparently true as to why I lost it! I think it must have re-seeded itself and kept coming back every year. Since I have been trying to start more with not much success. Thanks

Seedbank = Arctic Bunker

Norway has built a pretty awesome1 seed storage facility over 400 feet under a frozen arctic mountain. Further chilled by air conditioners to reach -0.4F, the seeds should be safe for up to 1000 years. Hooray for biodiversity! From an AP article:The vault will serve as a backup for hundreds of other seed banks worldwide. It has the capacity to store 4.5 million seed samples from around the world and shield them from man-made and natural disasters.Dug into the permafrost of the mountain, it has been built to withstand an earthquake or a nuclear strike. The seeds are packed in silvery foil containers -- as many as 500 in each sample -- and placed on blue and orange metal shelves inside three 32-foot-by-88-foot storage chambers. Each vault can hold 1.5 million sample packages of all types of crop seeds, from carrots to wheat.1Did you see Alien vs. Predator? Remember the big Antarctic bunker/pyramid? The Norwegians clearly did too.

GMO sun flower seeds, how can I tell? Answered

Hi fellow instrucablers, I planted some sunflowers a while ago and recently I collected the seeds from the flowers and replanted them.  The original seeds were from a packet which I threw away.  I've planted the new seeds and it's been a week and the haven't sprouted, I'm not sure if I was really unlucky or if the seeds have been genetically modified in order for them not to grow new plants.   I still have some seeds left over so I was wondering if there was anyway to tell if they have been modified somehow. Thanks a ton Sirnoodlehe

I need a cheap fast growing pot plant for science experiment? Answered

Hi everyone. Recently I have got a school assignment for the holidays that requires to make changes to a organisms environment, and make observations and write a report about what affect the changes have on the organism. I have decided to see how dayley water amounts affect a plant species. I am planning on setting up a planter box, with many divisions. I will then give plants more water than others, form dry to completely saturated. I will be measuring the plants heights dayley, and also be comparing the root systems of them after the experiment has completed. The aim is to see how the plants adapt and find the optimum water content. I need to decide on a common, available, cheap plant, that will grow fast enough that I will get some decent results over the 2 week holidays. Any ideas?

Need some answers on oranges... Answered

This summer (I think, I really cannot remember) I set up a propagator to grow some bamboo seeds I bought off eBay- Instructable coming soon on this topic- and then off the success of my bamboo seeds, I stuck a few orange seeds in as well. They grew alright, they're pretty huge now and I just re-potted them today into new, higher quality soil etc. Whilst doing this I discovered that each seed (I only had to successfully grown seeds) had spouted two saplings. So when re-potting I found out I didn't actual have 2 strange orange saplings but 4 of them with totally independent root systems. Albeit Two out of the four had not been receiving as much light as the others so there are two huge dominant saplings and the two smaller ones that grew in their shadow.  Is it normal for orange trees to grow two sprouts from one seed? I haven't tried growing them before so I don't know. Or have I got magical seeds, or a divine calling to grow plants? ;) Any help would be great,   Tom

Using both carrot oil and carrot seed oil in a homemade sunscreen

I've been researching making my own natural sunscreen using coconut oil and shea butter as a carrier for a few base oils (like avocado oil and red raspberry seed oil) as well as aloe and beeswax. All of the recipes I've found online say to use carrot seed oil, which is an essential oil, although they don't specify this and a lot have pictures of what looks like base carrot oil. (carrot seed essential oil being more light yellow in color and carrot oil being more golden) http://www.carrotmuseum.co.uk/carrotoil.html That's a link to one of many articles that talk about the difference between the carrot seed essential oil and base carrot oil. There are others you can find on the first page of google that go into a little bit more depth about the differences. From what I gather, the carrot seed oil is supposed to have a really high SPF, while the carrot oil is supposed to be great for sun tanning and evening out skin tone, etc. What I can't find is any documentation on whether both can or should be used in making your own natural sunscreen. I am hoping to use both and just wanted to know if it would be a good idea. Thanks.
