Hi there, I'm currently using a raspberry pi and LCD as a jukebox with Volumio. I was hoping to tidy it up in a nice enclosure and have found a broken digital tuner which I hope to recycle. The casing does display a warning of electric shocks so thought I'd ask for your advice! I've never really fiddled around with mains powered devices before, so are there any things I should watch out for, safety-wise? I'm only intending to remove the non-working electronics inside, not to make any adjustments to them. Thanks in advance

HI everyone. I am wanting to start a 3d printing service business. This would be on a small scale to start. My question is how to securely download 3d files from customers so that I can use those files to create a 3d printed object for them, then ship objects back. I thought about offering the service on craigslist and receive the customer's file through email. But I know that a website would be better, but have no idea as how to implement the capability to receive customers' files securely and while keeping those files organized. Items will be printed using a makerbot, so I would communicate to potential customers as to the limitations of said printer. Thanks, and would appreciate any answers or advice.

Anyone got any idea where I could find free service manuals on the net? I'm trying to repair my car audio system (Alpine CDA 7998R) but im stuck without much information. If anyone could help, what I'm looking at is a green pcb with D301-313 written on it, and it has a part named Q701 which looks like a very small ic with three legs at the bottom, and one at top, its surface mount and is blown up. It also has a delta sign on it with some design within, I cant read the rest of it cause its blown. Please help anyone, if you can... Whatever you may tell....

Just had a flyer through from these guys http://ragworm.eu/ VERY low cost PCB making - around 6 USD/sq inch for double sided plated holes - and they have very liberal design rules, so they'll cut boards to weird shapes too Looks like free UK shipping, I don't see what they are saying about international orders. European Voluntary Service (EVS) is an Erasmus+ program for young people (17-30 years old) who want to spend a long time living in a different country and with almost all the cost paid: apartment, wifi, transport, food... Bataviawerf (Lelystad, Netherlands) is a dockyard with special ambitions. Ships from the golden century which has been important in our maritime history, are reconstructed here. Our organisation is depending on the work of volunteers for some years already. A lot of foreign volunteers helped to build the ship “Batavia” and are now helping to build the new ship “Het water schip”. The Bataviawerf could not exist without the help of numerous volunteers which help in showing everybody the way of building ships in the 17th century. We are seeking for 3 new EVS with the next profile: Tasks Create technical drawings, finish the 3D Digital Model of the Batavia, create nice videos and photos about the Bataviawerf and handwork (rebuild some parts of the Batavia -mast, yards, etc.-, forge, wood work,...) Criteria Technical background with knowledge about SolidWorks, AutoCad and similar or experienced in graphic, digital and multimedia design (Adobe Premiere, InDesign, etc). Also creative, self-motivated and interested in shipbuilding and handwork. Procedure If you are interested and you think your profile is suitable for one of our tasks, send us your CV and a motivation letter to the email: firstname.lastname@example.org More information We are seeking for 3 new European volunteers for the next periods: 1) From August 2016 to August 2017. 2) From September 2016 to September 2017. 3) From December 2016 to December 2017. Hi Friends,Recently someone has been calling me on my cell phone about 3 times a day saying they are the secret service from a private Caller ID. It is someone from my high school. I think they are using a spoof card because the phone number is blocked or the white houses number. It is really starting to piss me off and I need some help. They have called about 7 or 8 times in the last 2 days. Its really annoying. I called sprint to see what they could do but all they said was that I would need to contact local law enforcement to put it to a stop. The worst part is they are not only wasting there own and my own time but they are also working away at my phone bill. So, I need your help. What do you think I should do, contact the local police and get the perpetrator(s) arrested for impersonating a government member or should I try something else such as taking the law into my own hands (phone trap/ back spoofing)Thanks for all your help.Joe Rowley

Well I finally gave in to the little pop-up box in the corner of the screen and installed Xp service pack three and it messed me about something shocking... A list of issues: - The quazi-vista theme I was running wet itself completely, now replaced with Zune theme - Firefox three got very upset and now has a mint theme because it had a bog standard theme that looked similar - The startup screen (login bit) and the login screen for password protection on knocking off screensaver is going mad, both do work but have some bizarre half breed theme on the go - The computer ticked and banged for ages - Multiple other weird ones - Oh startup programs decided to appear, suddenly I was inundated by FF, messenger, skype, media player and photoshop all opening on startup rather than just wireless G-utility... The odd three are on my taskbar list, some connection... Skype, I have no clue. Before the restart everything worked really oddly, I caught on that it was time because it refused me the ability to install programs and generally messed around. On the upside I hit a couple of sites and the combination of a less heavyweight theme and a ram optimiser majigger have got the computer running faster, now I'm just clawing back all my old settings. Slowly.

I've been having a hard time finding this and I was hoping you guys could help. I live in the Boston area, and I need a CNC service to cut some linoleum for linoprints. I can provide the files in any format needed pretty much. But I need someplace that can cut up to 36"x36" sheets down to a depth of 1/16th - 1/8th of an inch. Anyone know of a service that will do this? I can provide material. In fact I prefer it. Thanks.

I need a recommendation for possible ISP's and phone service bundles. I have been looking at the AT & T one and a higher priced one from Quester, but am undecided at this point, since my verizon line will not stay connected long enough for me to search the web from click to click, much less "surf" the web *sigh* The location would have to be in Lancaster County, PA (that's the USA for those outside the USA). :-) One ISP/Phone combo we've been looking at is: Open range, anyone know anything about it?

Is there a different robot I should be contacting? ;-)

The Emma Maersk is the second longest ship in the world, and the longest currently in service. It's so large, it looks photoshopped into any picture it appears. Driving such a large ship requires a lot of power. From Wikipedia:The Emma Maersk is powered by a Wartsila-Sulzer 14RTFLEX96-C engine, currently the world's largest single diesel unit, weighing 2,300 tons and capable of 109,000 horsepower (82 MW). The ship has several features to protect the environment. This includes recycling the exhaust, mixed with fresh air, back into the engine for reuse. This not only increases efficiency by as much as 12% but also reduces engine emissions. Instead of biocides, used by much of the industry to keep barnacles off of the hull, a special silicone-based paint is used. This increases the ship's efficiency by reducing drag while also protecting the ocean from biocides that may leak. The silicone paint covering the part of the hull below the waterline is credited for lowering the water drag enough to save 1200 tons of fuel per year.We started talking about energy consumption after watching a practice version of Saul's upcoming E-Tech Keynote, Energy Literacy, and Dave Culp of Kiteship and Speed Sailing did a back-of-the-envelope MPG calculation for this ship:A few more facts about Emma Maersk:Running at her rated 80 Mw, her main engines burn 14 tons of residual fuel each hour. Annually, that's 97,400 tons of fuel. Her auxiliaries, delivering their full 30 Mw, burn an additional 6.6 tons/hour, for a total fuel burn of 20.6 tons/hour. Given 290 steaming days/year (80% capacity factor, which is conservative), this yields a total annual usage of 143,400 tons or about $64.5 million in annual fuel costs.Burning 20.6 tons/hour = 6724 gals/hour. At 31 kts/hour, this equals .0046 nautical miles/gallon. At 6076 ft/nautical mile, that's 28 feet/gallon of fuel burned. The 1200 tons saved by her "revolutionary" bottom paint represents a bit less than 1% of this cost, so increases her fuel mileage to 28.2 feet/gallon.Dave concludes:You gotta haul a lot of containers full of $7 tee shirts to make this profitable.28 feet/gallon!Images from jtashipphoto.dk and Wikipedia.

Hey everyone, Sorry to spam the forum; just had a quick question. I am thinking of building a web-based tool that would allow you to drop the bill of materials from an Instructable in, and then other people could order everything at once when they wanted to build your kit. Do you think you would use something like this? What if it didn't have that feature, but it was just a web-based bill of materials builder where you can keep a nice-looking list, with sources, of all the parts? Thanks! Justin

I am currently making an instructable that requires an electric motor. I have a Porter Cable electric sander motor that I was going to use for the project. The ideal motor for this project needs to be able to hook into a wall outlet and the speed of the motor needs to be adjustable by a rheostat or some other adjustable device. I recently tried connecting the AC motor to a wall outlet which in return the motor began to heat up and produce smoke while showing no movement whatsoever. I thought this would work because the motor had no power transformer attached inside the sander whenever I took the sander apart. The base of my question is: How do I go about converting the right amount of voltage or current so that I can use the motor to my discretion of speed?
