How can I prevent aluminum jewelry from oxidizing?

In my instructable about making an aluminum ring, I made two aluminum rings, one for my girlfriend and one for myself. Mine is still fine; however, hers keeps turning black (oxidizing). I understand this is because she is a girl and her skin pH is different than mine (more basic); but I am curious if there are any techniques on how to prevent this from happening. The ring needs to be polished using aluminum cleaner every other week, but if there was a way to keep its mirror finish, that would be fantastic. Thank you!

What Adhesive and or Sealant to decoupage a car with fabric, paper, & ...?

Hi Guys, Maria in Florida here. Bought a 2013 Honda Fit which I love but is all black. Did I mention I live in FLORIDA? It would have to withstand relentless Sun & Water, dry slow enough so that I can manipulate materials and remove air bubbles before they harden, be flexible enough to accept movement within the frame and dry hard as diamonds.  Oh, and if it could take a coat or two of wax so I can keep up the shine that´d be great too. I don´t plan to put anything 3-dimensional so at least there´s that?! Many thanks for any suggestions. Cheers and Can´t wait to hear from all you brilliant ¨Instructablers.¨ :)

New LED lightbulbs shine light in all directions

GE is going to be releasing a new LED lightbulb early next year that shines light in all directions, like a normal bulb, instead of one direction like they do now. The bulb will use 9 watts and shine as much light as a 40-watt incandescent. It will also last for 17 years. The drawback is the cost, which will be $40-$50, but it does provide an efficient lighting option for those who don't like the light from CFLs. No word about the blades on the side, however. Polishing small or very detailed metal parts - the easy way ;)

I should not get hoocked on the cummunity side here again but well, I am bored today...If you have a vintage car, some old steam engine models or even really old clocks then you know my pain.Copper, brass and sometimes aluminium was used and if not cared for in time they nice shine goes first.Dirt and dust come next. And with more time passed we start to consider leaving it as the polishing would take forever.Take one of my "hobbies": old mantle clocks...Literally everything inside is brass. Now polishing a bass backing plate with some holes is quite easy if you have an ultrasonic cleaner to clean the debris out of the tiny holes when done.Even tried to polish a sprocket or fine spring mechanism? If spoked then this is a really painful job.But the same is true if you have old copper and brass ware, like these old stenciled pictures on copper sheets. No matter what you try these jobs end up to take more time than what you imagined and in many cases fine details are left oxidised or filled with the polishing compount. Now imagine you could get rid of these tarnishes and discolorations without cramps in your hand and bying all sorts of polishing products?Sure there are the well known brands that polish a lot of metal with ease by simply wiping over them. But they use harmful and often toxic chemicals and are still no good for really fine details like grooves or emossed stuff.Wearing gloves and protection is often a must and at least I can't stand the stink of them.We all know how to clean our dishes, even how to get the dried on lasagne from last night off the dinner plates. So why not do the same with our brass, copper or aluminium parts?Just use a spongue, rub and wipe a bit, rinse off and let dry.Ok, those who tried before reding the rest might be a bit angry now as it does not work that easy.Well, actually it does, just don't use dishwashing liquid :)Let me give you two of the worst cleaning problems I encountered first:You did some very fine brazing to create something nice from brass or bronze. The flux you can wash off, but polishing the discoloration from the heat and resulting oxidisation will take longe than the brazing job.The other ecounter was the restauration of a petromax style blow torch of alomst 60 years of age - but thankfully it was never used for more than decoration. All brass and a lot parts impossible to polish due to size and being quite delicate. Now we all have ways to spend a lot of time and being creative to use normal ways of polishing. And, yes I did so myself for many years and kick can myself now too.Since we can't do any advertising here and I clearly don't want to promote any brands or harm other brands by rendering their costly products useless I need a way out that helps everyone. So, again, I am not trying to promote anything here! However I noticed someone in my favourite restaurants kitchen polishing some dark copper pot to a mirrow shine in less than 5 minutes!I was shocked and asked the manager to explain what I just saw.He was confused to say the least..."We clean our pots every day, sometimes more depending on what we cooked in them."Sure but what do you use to do what I need several hours for in minutes and with better results?"Just water and soapy powder to shine the metal sir. All natural product."Omg god or Kali! What makes it shine so quickly?"Shining powder sir!" - mind you the poor guy was now totally confused and worried, while I started to loose my insanity. He noticed the look on my face and went into the kitchen.Gave me a fance looking bag that apart from a lot of Indian writing I could not make any sense of stated "Shining powder" on the pack. When the manager saw the look on face this time he laughed and asked "How do you clean your copper pots sir?"I was speechless and just said with much more time and elbow grease...He packed about thimble worth of powder for me to try and said it would be enough for a medium sizde pot, just use a wet spongue and put a little bit of powder on it.And guess what the stuff worked as good as in the restaurant :(I can't even count how many hours I wasted polishing copper or brass parts with fine details.Or engine parts from aluminium with brass parts inside....With this stuff you just wipe and tough cases rub a bit harder and all is done in literally seconds. In tight areas or those with fine details you use a fine brush like those for painting in water colors. And with that and a spongue you clean even the finest details with ease.In an ultrasonic cleaner it even works on areas you can't reach, just wipe what you can reach and see somehow and it shines. Now if you want this magic stuff and check if the guy here is just pulling your leg then be prepared to pay a lot of money.200 grams of this powder will set you back between 5 and 15 bucks depending on where you shop. That is enough clean about 300 midsized copper pots or a few hundret meters of copper piping....Just ask for shining powder in your Indian grocery store ;)We all waste money or stuff we don't need, so if you have coper, brass or aluminium to polish then try washing it the Indian way - just for fun of testing something else. And if after that test you think the few bucks and information was well worth it than please post your experience with the powder in the comments below.I hope all those members here working with these metals will read this too, so if not help me to spread the word please ;)I am struggling to upload some pics I have taken from the blow torch but will try again alter once I reduced their size.If in doubt I will upload them to a hoster and link them.Disclaimer:I don't advertise, I don't promote! However I am so pleased with this dirt cheap product that I use it now as my prefered and natural option. For this reason I think it is worth sharing. It is not a magic cure! If you have pitted areas, solder marks or brazin coming out of joints it will not help.Same for scratches, they still require abrasive polishing to be removed. But normal dirt from being displayed for years, oxidisation and even slight discoloration from corrosion will vanish. And if the surface has a good polish underneath all this than it will come back with ease ;)

Bacteria-like projections when shining a laser through a magnifying glass.?

I was recently shining my new green laser pointer through a magnifying glass, and the beam went through the little circle near the bottom of the lens that magnifies things more than the rest of the lens. The laser dot got very much larger, and there were odd little dark circles surrounded by larger, transparent circles. I also noticed the same thing, but with longer, oval-like projections instead of circles. What are these projections of? I'm guessing dirt, hair, bacteria, etc. Can anyone tell me? I want to know because it's a pretty cool effect and it would be cool to know if I'm looking at bacteria or something like that.

How to make an underwater/rippling light effect?

I need some help! I am trying to make a light that appears to be shining through moving water. If you google "Chauvet Abyss lighting" that is the sort of effect I want, but it will be in a bathroom so on a much smaller scale.  I can't figure out how to do this. I tried shining light of an aluminum pan of water to get a reflection but it was too dim and I couldn't keep the water moving unless I stood there moving it. Some of the problems with this are it needs to be fairly bright, needs to be preferably something that doesn't need to be plugged in, and can't be expensive. I thought of shining a light through an aquarium but I am not sure how to keep the water moving in a way that it would give the right appearance. I also thought of having the light moving instead and either still water or have the light shine through some type of translucent surface that is made to look like water. However I am not sure how to make a light that moves (slowly) or how to make a surface for it to shine through.

Photocell Problems

I'm trying to add a photocell light sensor to a device that sits under a liquor bottle that lights it up Only when it's dark. However the photocell (or at least I'm pretty sure it's a photocell) only completes the circuit when there is light shining on it, rather than when there is not. I removed the photocell from a broken night light that's been gathering dust in my junk cabinet. The night light logically lit up at night, but the sensor seems to be doing the opposite. Does anyone know what component I would require to reverse the effect of the cell? The first picture below is the circuit wired simply on a mini breadboard with a LED to test for continuity. The photocell is the only other component on the board, and is causing the LED to shine dimly. The second picture has a light shining on the photocell. It is hard to see, but the LED is lit much more brightly. I want to reverse this effect. All suggestions are welcome!

Can anyone tell me for sure what material the Western Digital HD are made? They shine like mirrors and seems steel. Answered

I dismantled an old WD HD 2.5 Gb to use the neodymium magnet, and to my surprise I found that instead of a disc, it had three, stacked. I was also surprised for its mirror finish, I expected a dark brown surface, like floppies. Can anyone tell me for sure what material they are made the discs? Aluminum is not, must be steel, but it must be stainless steel or be well covered, because they shine like mirrors.

200mm Fan LED`s does not seem to shine? Can I connect them to the power wires of the fan?

Hi Recently I bought a 200mm LED fan: http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?category_id=3510&product;_id=6456 Accept mine has LED on/off support. The problem is I mounted it onto a Notebook cooling pad and it works great the only problem is the LED`s stays off?ive been asking around on how to switch on these LED`s Manually but it seems I need an extra 5V to switch them on.There is 4 wires on the fan in groups of 2 .The wires are the following-- Black+Yellow=Power 12V Black+Red= ??  "Probably LED`s" My question is if I really want to go through all the trouble of making these LED`s work should I connect those Black+Red wires onto the Power wires coming from the adapter and put a 9V resistor on them or is there an easier way of doing this? The reason im putting the resistor in is so that the fan and the LED`s dont split power equally thus giving the FAN 6V and the LED`s 6V which will probably end up bad? OR do I have everything wrong here? Im willing to give the LED`s 3V of the entire 12V leaving 9V to the Fan which is ok I guess. Thanks in advance!

Woodblock Art

After seeing this https://www.instructables.com/id/Solid-Wood-Digital-Clock/, would it be possible to replicate this but light up just a solid image? It would most likely require a CNC machine to pull off well, but if you took a piece 10cmx10cmx1cm of wood then milled out an image of something to 0.5m would it be possible to shine a LED through it to just bring up the outline while the rest of the wood is too dense/coated and you're just left with a image shining through wood. I think you would be able to pull off some pretty cool artwork with it, but there's a few things that need to be considered; such a strength, the chance of it getting bumped is pretty low but with a thin diameter so the light can shine through it's probably quite fragile. Are there transparent fiberglass weaves/epoxy coatings that would add some strength while not ruining the effect? The other big thing I see is colors, would there be any limit factors with the different species of woods you can buy or is the main problem just getting a solid image lit up instead of just LED dots.

Using a laser pointer to display secret shapes?

Hey, all, I'm working on a puzzle for an escape room right now and am wondering if there's any way that I can use a laser pointer to display a number. My hope is that the number is not on the lens of the pointer, but rather is discovered after the laser pointer is shined through a specific spot on a piece of plexiglass. The players are asked to set up a tripod in a specific spot with a specific angle, mount the laser point to the top of it and then move the point around the room. Ideally, as the point is traveling around the room, it will shine directly on a small part of a plexiglass display and then refract a number on the wall behind it. Any ideas on how or if this is possible? Any and all thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

Protecting Your Loved Ones from the Boogyman

Both my girlfriend and my sister are afraid of the dark. I've heard so many stories and them waking up in the middle of the night, hearts racing, and then checking under the bed before they run to the bathroom. Afterwards, they run back and literally jump into the bed and hide under the covers. While this is infinitely amusing for me, I'm sure it's not as fun for them. What could actually be really cool is if the iCreate could sleep near the bed and the wake up when motion is detected, turn on a light and then follow the person to the bathroom shining a beacon of safety/boogyman death ray. ;) It's actually not as innocuous as it sounds. To pull this off some of the classic problems in robotics would have to be solved including object tracking (probably using infrared), collision avoidance and coordinated movement all using the iCreate. If you think about it, the possible extensions are many... perhaps on command the iCreate could play a chosen melody to soothe you back to sleep; perhaps each person using the iCreate could have a different colored light to shine the way; and if you could do that, perhaps you could also mod it into party mode where it would shine a bunch of lights in a pattern while it played songs. Groovy. I'm really excited by the possibilities and ideas floating around as a result of this contest, so thank you iRobot for the opportunity, we're slowly getting there!
