How would one make an Ipod shuffle (2nd gen) charger?

Hello 'iblers :o) I'm sick of my bulky shuffle dock (shame on you, Apple!), and want to make something like the shufflebud or this homemade one*. I have plenty of parts but the problem is that I cannot find an 'ible or anything telling me what to do - I'd make one myself but don't know the details of usb wiring. The dock alternatives shown in these pictures transfer song files like the standard dock - this functionality would be a bonus and I know that one of you has the knowledge! *The link on the Engaget page to instructions (in German) is broken. Here is a translation of the page.

change ipod shuffle (2nd gen) colour

I won a 2nd gen iPod Shuffle from an arcade game at the local movie theatre and I got a purple one. Since I'm so insecure with my sexuality (and I just plain don't like the colour) I'm wondering if there is a way to strip the paint (if it actually is paint) from it. I've looked into other options like the silicon and aluminum shuffle cases but they are kinda bulky.

Any iPod Shuffle Gen 2 Mods yet?

I won a iPod Shuffle Gen 2.0 in a local Photography contest, and was wondering if anyone has come up with mods for it. I've seen the travel case, very creative, but I'm looking to hack the actually player, and not just to hook it up to headphones or USB. Yeah, I'm a bit picky ;-). Also, is there anything of worth inside the iPod after say, the battery doesn't charge up anymore?

Little Gem MkII may have fried my ipod?

I`ve built and was testing a Little Gem Mk II amp on a breadboard and for audio signal input i used my ipod shuffle 2nd generation. What happened was that the output sounded very distorted ( probably too large of pin 1-8 bypass capacitors) before the ipod stoped working. For the first two times i pluged it to the pc the orange light came on steady, not blinking as expected. From the third time on i got no response at all. So, is the amp - and me - guilt of killing the ipod? (considering that it was 4~5 years old and may have died of natural causes)

How do I fix the earbuds that came with my ipod?

I've used the earbuds that came with my iPod since the summer, and I like them. Recently the plastic/rubbery border on the edge came off, and so did the mesh that made it bearable to listen to, in one of them (the right one, if you care). Now what's exposed has sharp edges on the disc and is painful to listen to. And I'm not just talking about the Nickelback song my cousin gave me. Is there a way to substitute this with a common household object, or something I can pick up for free?

Cursed Clue Character?

Here's something you might find interesting. I enjoy playing Clue, as does my family. A short while ago we bought a new board, and we've been playing with it. Everything was going fine, until something freaky started happening. Almost always Professor Plum did it. We tried shuffling differently, checking the cards, everything. Then we started keeping track. as of now of 15 times played, our favorite Egyptologist did it 11 times. Now that's just freaky. He did it with an array of weapons and locations, but he's been consistently a killer. Anyone know how to excorsise a game piece?

Amplifying speakers and IC's

I have come to the instructables forum today in search for knowledge. So I have been working on a simple speaker system for my ipod shuffle, the speaker I used is quite old, but was the only one I found laying around. When I plug my ipod into the circuit everything works fine the only problem is that it is barely audible. Is there a way to amplify the sound so I can actually hear it without having to stick my ear right next to it? Pictures of my work so far will be provided. Oh also identifying the IC's included in the gallery would be of utmost help. Thanks in advance.

Sanding Laser Etchings and Saltwater Etching Through Anodization ?s

I own an iPod Shuffle, 2nd generation, silver. It is very plain, and I've recently been reading up on saltwater etching. I want to remove the standard Apple logo from the back and etch my own text (it will either be "iMake" or "iBles", I can't decide). I've come upon two roadblocks, so far, those being: can I sand laser etchings (the Apple Logo) off, and can I etch through the player's anodization, or would I need to sand that off? I don't really care if it doesn't turn out perfect, or looks like a total mess. It's not like I paid for the thing. Thanks for any help!

iPod Question - Re-routing button switches?

I had a wonderful idea, one which, thanks to Kiteman's Law, will be made into an Instructable if all turns out. For this, I am using an iPod Shuffle, second generation. I will remove the aluminum case, so as to expose the circuit board and battery, etc. I figure since the iPod is small, the buttons that are on it will be surface mounted, like a cell phone. Does anyone know if (and how) these could be modified/hacked so as to enable me to use my own push-button switch? So as to give you a somewhat vague idea of what I am creating, I am virtually super-sizing the iPod. Thanks y'all!

microwave "anagram"

I have that maker-ish compulsion to disassemble any and every broken or otherwise defunct appliance, gadget or device. For example, my microwave just "went to sing with the choir invisible", so I have begun turning it into a pile of parts. I got to thinking- as many of you must have doe before- "what can I do with this stuff?". Just like anagramists take words and shuffle their parts (i.e., letters) around to make something(s) new, different and/or clever, I'd like to try to do the same thing with my old appliance. But more generally, I wish there were a database of appliance "anagrams"- a list of clever projects classified according to the appliance from which the parts come. Anyway- if anyone has an idea what could be done with an old microwave (I've got my eye on that big capacitor...), please hold forth!

Which program, application, or site is the best site for music making and mixes (I know it's opinion based)?

I've recently taken an interest in producing my own music to supplement my YouTube account. I'm very interested in creating techno, club, jpop mixes, hardstyle, and light dub step. I want to make music I can shuffle to. I also want to branch out in to other genres of synthetic music, including classical-inspired music. I want to be able to rip, warp, distort, and modify music clips. I'd like to be able to separate aspects of a song (vocal from instrumental) but I don't think free programs offer that feature. I thought I would use the previous paragraph to get past the usual "what are you using it for?" question. Which program, application, website, etc. is your favorite for making music and mixes? ~Kaddyshack

My favorites from the week of 2006-11-27

Check out my favorite Instructables from last week!Resistor manIt’s amazing how much character you can get across with just a few components. Reminds me of resistor sex (which is not work or school appropriate!).modular pie-cosahedronJaw-droppingly awesome! I ate enough pie to literally be sick over Thanksgiving weekend, but this made me want more. DOUBLE MOUSEAnything that can double my productivity is always top of my list, but something that records your everyday actions and turns it into art takes it to the next level. One could do a similar thing with GPS coordinates. green chile fried turkeyI love the combination science experiment/gourmet dinner aspect of this Instructable. Also, it is an excellent use of the collaboration system -- notice how some of the photonotes are from the collaborators!Mic stereo with little amp in a pencil boxIf you’re not familiar with soundscapes, you should really check this out. By recording in stereo with the mics in a similar position as our ears, you can create fairly immersive soundtracks. I love the sense of movement when cars pass or someone shuffles by. It works best with headphones.

Music Managment Soloution ?

Hello Ok, i have a problem. My iTunes library has 1200 songs in it, not a massive number i know, But the thing is all this music is spread over so many genres and many time periods. Personally i think the way we view music is appalling, iTunes looks like a spreadsheet, my playlists are alphabetical and i cant reorganise them. Its a very boring system and for a creative person its almost impossible to find, group and remember what i like and what i want to listen to. Anyway i cant change that. So my problem is as i have grown up I've been through a number of phases. I used to like rock then heavy metal, briefly pop, then rock and now for the last two years I've been very big on electronic. I love everything about this genre and its grown massively since i have grown up. Now I only like a few of the old rock songs. Its really annoying trying to navigate this library, since all my music is mixed up. ACTUAL QUESTION Do i go through my library and keep all my favorite songs, deleting everything else ? or... Do I keep all the music I don't listen to and invest alot of time into constantly managing the playlists, and never use shuffle ? BONUS QUESTION How do you manage your music, and do you listen to one genre or multiple ? Hopefully soon someone will design a visual, personal way of listening to music, because i'm not an accountant, and my music isn't financial data...

help building a mobile juke box

Hi it would be cool to get some help and ideas with my project to build a mobile juke box, the main part of this idea is that it needs to be low powered as a lot of the time there will be no electric supply, we like to have partys in fields and on the beach  so im thinking it will be better to have a 12 volt system that can run of leisure battery's ive got two 120amp leisure battery's in my t4 van  and when thats not going to be available to use i have a spare 120 amp leisure battery that i could put in the bottom of the jukebox but i have no idea at the moment of how long that would run the system. im thinking the system would comprise of car speakers one 12 inch sub one 10 inch sub two or four 6 by 9 speakers two or for 6 inch speakers two tweeters an amp or two to run everything raspberry pi b+ about a 10 to 15 inch screen some funky led lighting i would love to have some juke box software for the retroness and it would make this easy for some of the less techy not sure if that possible on the raspberry pi? one of the ideas ive had is, as well as having some basic controls (i dont want a full keyboard)  having some 'genre panic buttons'  basically when everyones had enough of putting tunes on (too drunk!) you can hit a genre panic button and the juke box will play on its own, so far the only way i can think to do this is to have a harddrive with several partitions on with music pre installed into the own genres that the jukebox will shuffle and play when one of the buttons is hit, but i have no idea how to get the partition to play by hitting a button though. any input or ideas to help me get my head around this would be fantastic :) thanks

OggVOSH: The (soon-to-be) Open-Source Ogg Vorbis Player

I've been eying the VS1000, a little bitty chip that is basically an all-in-one Ogg Vorbis player, just add a crystal & memory. Its so beutiful, so tiny yet so complex... it even has a great default firmware. I've finnally got around to making this. I'm sending the PCB off to be made, and getting parts to prototype. Stats? Size: 2.19"x1.48", roughly twice the size of a new shuffle, or half the size of a new nano. I haven't figured out depth, but it uses li-on batteries, so it will not have a lump on the back, it should be comparably thin.Capacity: uses microSD cardsConnections: 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, microSD card, and miniUSB. Via miniUSB, you can charge the battery, as well as read/write to the SD card.Audio Support: Only Ogg Vorbis, but then again, it is the best codec, you can convert everything to it ;-) Max bit rate: 500 (beat that Apple!)No screen :-(Cost:This is tricky. For me, if I didn't buy any spare parts, its going to cost me $100. If I had an SD card, it'd only be $80. If I semi-mass produce them (more than 20), I know I can cut at least $10 off that price. So, it pretty much beats the Daisy, our, the OS/DIY community's, current audio device all around. Except one thing... it isn't a beginners project, involving nearly all SMD components, the only exception being the headphone jack. And the main chip is a bit of a pain to solder -- 12 pins on each 1 cm side ;-)Still, I think this is promising... along with my micro-POV... in making things smaller, like the "real" devices :P

Typo-Squatting (Misspelled Domain Name scams)

Here's a Very interesting article about of of the most common internet problem: Typo-SquattingTypo-squatting is the practice of creating domain names that are often misspelled names for bigger brands. For example: Runescape is a popular free MMORGP (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). There are sites which names are misspelled versions of Runescape. A few I encountered while playing:RuenscapeRunscapeRiunscapeThese misspelled sites are mainly used for either- online scams- pay by click ads - which feature popular search terms for the original site. The misspelled site gets payed every time someone clicks on one of those.- Spyware and AdwarePopular targets for this practice is google, apple, microsoft,For example, I will demonstrate the case of the iphone:from McAfee:By the end of 2007, at least 8,000 URLs using the word iphone will be registered, according to a well known domain expert. The most valuable iphone.com is owned by Apple itself, but when Steve Jobs announced the product early in 2007, Apple didn't own the iphone domain yet. One expert estimates that Apple paid at least $1 million to buy that piece of valuable Web real estate. Among the 8,000 registered URLs incorporating iphone are community fan sites, rumor and hack sites and, of course, scam sites. Freeappleiphonesnow dot com claims to offer free iPhones and variants that don't even exist (like the iPhone "shuffle" and "nano".) The URL is nothing more than a redirect to royalsweeps dot com . When we tested the site, we received debt consolidation offers, get rich quick solicitations, "free" cell phone prizes and other questionable e-mail. Many of the iphone-related domains are misspellings, or typos. Iohone dot com, for example, was registered on January 9, 2007, the day Apple officially announced the iPhone. In August 2007, the site consisted of pay-per-click ads for iPhone-related Web sites. Microsoft says that on an average day more than 2,000 domain names are registered that contain Microsoft trademark terms.According to the US Government Accounting Office, at least 8.65% of all domain names are registered with false or incomplete Whois information, a practice that makes domain squatting easier. More recently, in September 2007, the managers of the .eu top level domain suspended 10,000 domains registered by a Chinese woman who was accused of being a cyber-squatter. The first two Images are from the domains Freeappleiphonesnow and Iohone The other images are from microsoft dot cm and another website that results in 482 spammy emails a week. The last image is from McAfee

Caring for a toad with a broken and infected arm? Answered

Last weekend I found a toad with his arm trapped in a mousetrap.  I don't know exactly how long he was there, but I discovered him when I heard this shuffling sound from the back of my garage and heard flies buzzing.  Upon investigating, I found poor Toady.  The flies had already laid eggs on his wound.  He was trying to hop away attached to the trap.   His arm is clearly broken.  He didn't have significant blood loss, but when I first opened the trap his tiny bones were visible at the injury site. I put Toady in a small bucket lined with moss and vegetation, along with adding a little bit of water, and covered the bucket with a dishtowel.  I used cotton swabs dipped in saline to clean the wound and applied antibiotic ointment (Neosporin without painkiller).  I also tied a thread slightly above the injury site to act as a tourniquet and prevent further infection, and possibly allow for his limb to naturally come off. Below the injury site is swollen, discolored and infected, growing a fuzzy fungus.  I've been checking on Toady every other day (I wasn't wanting to stress him out too much with frequent visits), cleaning his wound and infection and applying antibiotic ointment.  His arm is clearly dead weight and can't be salvaged.   I've put various bugs, slugs/snails and worms in there with him but I haven't seen him eat.  I put a june bug in there, and the june bug ended up trying to climb onto him but Toady seemed to try and squash the bug with his chest and then hopped over the bug to the other side.  Maybe the beetle is too big for him.  I haven't checked to see if the other goodies I gave him are just hiding under the moss. He doesn't appear to be losing or gaining weight.  He gets stressed whenever I visit, breathing rapidly and either trying to make himself look larger or do the opposite and huddle down, despite how careful and gentle I try and be around him. I'm worried about predators and infection if I were to release him now.  What should I do/not do?  I think I'll try Craigslist here to see if there happens to be an experienced amphibian owner with the proper supplies to care for him.  I doubt any vet here would be able to do anything, and I don't have the money to do so. Is this toad a male?  I thought he was based on his size since he's on the small size, but perhaps it's a youngster?  He doesn't make any noises with me, but I'm not sure if it was him chirping in his bucket or a nearby toad.  I know there's several right in the immediate vicinity.
