Signal Indicator?

I'm trying to make a simple transmitter/receiver setup to use in airsoft to keep track of the distance (not worried about direction right now) between me and whatever the transmitter is planted on. The transmitter can send out a steady signal or pulses, and the only problem I have is how it will show the distance. I have a line of LEDs that I want to set up so that more light up the closer I get to the transmitter, but I don't know how to rig the setup so that it displays signal strength (I would think that the closer you are the stronger the signal). Does anyone have any idea how I can do this or perhaps better alternatives that accomplish the same thing?

Convert sound signal to dry contact signal?

This might be a bit of a strange question, so will try and word it so someone can follow along. I posted a thread previous about getting my doorbell chime to work with SmartThings.  What I now have is a sensor with external input.  The keep it simple, there inputs are GRND and IN.  When the 2 inputs are joined, the device reads CLOSED and when they are apart, the device reads OPEN...perfect. I've been trying to find a point on my Chimes circuit board that would create a dry contact between 2 points to trigger the sensor, but I'm not having a great deal of joy. There are however, 2 wires running from the board to a speaker in the unit.  Is there anyway I can get convert the signal to the speakers into a signal which would connect the 2 wires? I know a speaker is an electromagnet that responds to electric signals, but wasn't sure if there was something preventing the contact being made between the 2 sensor wires

Wireless Turn Signals

I have toyed around with the idea of making a jacket that has the turn signals and/or brake lights on the back. However, there is a twist, I would like to see a controller box to wirelessly send the signal from a scooter to the jacket. When the turn signals and brakes are used on the scooter it sends a wireless signal to the controller in the jacket which relays that to lights on the back of the jacket. I've seen some jackets with lights wired on to them controlled with an arduino.

homemade signal booster? Answered

I was trying to figure out how to boast my signal coverage in my area, and a got an idea: to use a UHF amplifier, to pick up the towers signal and rebroadcast it. of coarse since things like WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular 2G/3G/4G networks use two way radio, the signal can go back to the reviving end of the UHF amp, and get broadcasting to hit whatever tower. my phone should better recognize the tower, as if i just magically made a tower 2 feet away. however this might also amplify stay noise. if this idea doesn't work, why not? i think i am going to need at least a 20dB increase in power, but as of now i  need to do more research. but if i can buy a product that does a similar thing for less than $40, i would. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_zone_(cell_phone)#Dead_zones  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repeater http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_spectrum (cellphones use UHF spectrum) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_booster

I think that the signal is Vin (pin 3)  but that is one cable when a headphone has three cables. I know the red wire is right and the blue is left and the other is comm so I onley need 2. Because there is one input I need to make it one cable. Would this work (I will test what resistor I need with a voltmeter later). If I am wrong about there olny being one input can someone explane to me how to wire it.

741 Signal amplifier Answered

How would I go about creating an amplifier using an LM741 to amplify a 0mv-400mv signal to a 0v-4v signal? All the circuits from google or textbooks don't work, or produce strange oscillations. The only way I can get it to work is in inverting mode, where I can get -4v-0v out, which isn't very useful. My specific application for this is for a digital thermometer. I intend to amplify the 0-400mv analogue signal from an LM35 linear temperature sensor, then somehow sample that without using loads of logic or transistors and convert it to decimal or binary, then drive a dual 7-segment display to show the temperature. I have a prototype made using 20 comparators and 10 xor gates, and countless diodes, so if anyone could advise me on an easier way to do that, that would be great. And no PICs/AVRs, I know how to use them and have programmers, but I prefer to do "real" electronics using CMOS chips.

Is it possible to homothetically dilate a signal?

Imagine I have a very short signal that I would like to observe, however the frequency is too high for simply viewing it on an oscilloscope. Is there any possible way to "dilate" it over time? Obviously, I am not talking anything digital, probably some crystal retranslation...  Somehow, I haven't managed to find anything using the most obvious way (googling), but, probably, I don't know how to.

Is it possible to connect a usb cable to a laptop Wlan card and attache it to a dish for a stronger wifi signal?

I want to be able to take the mobile card, water proof it. Attache it to the back of the dish, run an antenna from the front also connected to the the cable with a power hookup. The idea is to raise the wifi signal as well as place the unit anywhere in the house to get a strong db. I was in Puerto Rico a few months ago and because the homes are sometimes built into the side of a hill the signals are weak. This challange should be easy but cheap and can be built with things that are availiable.  Broken computers, wires, discarded sat dish and batteries.

Mobile phone signal Detector

I want to know if there is any 'mobile phone signal detector' already available in the market. The purpose is to find if anybody is using mobile phone for calls or messaging at restricted places. Jammers are not fine as some are exempted from making calls etc.. If there is nothing like that available, how to make one to detect the signal or even the phone from which the signal was emitted. Usually when we are about to receive a call or sms and if we are near a Speaker we get a specific noise through speaker, or if we are near a monitor (CRT) it flickers.  So I am sure there are ways to find this signal emission. Please suggest the options to do this....

I'm guessing the right software on a *laptop with a wifi card would suffice. What does everyone else think? *Edited

How to amplify signal to transistor.

I have created a circuit using the diagram found here: The only differences in my circuit are that I only have used one LED and one 3 volt coin battery. I want to install this circuit in my headphones with the L/R and Ground soldered to the terminals of the speakers. On testing the circuit, I found that the light is only clearly illuminated when the volume is set to max, otherwise, it is very faint. I want it to work at lower volumes. How do I amplify the signal going to this circuit without building a headphone amp? I only want to amplify the signal going to this circuit, not the headphones. Thanks in advance.

Will mylar block RFID signals? Answered

I have an idea for a small leather work project that would utilize mylar film as an RFID signal blocker.  I have tried to research the effectiveness of mylar film for this purpose and the consensus opinion seems to be a resounding "Yes, No and Maybe." If anyone can point me to an authoritative source or has personal information relating to this, I would be most appreciative. Thanks Addendum: Much as I anticipated, you have posted a host of excellent answers that gave me a lot of information I hadn't yet considered. For my part, I should have included more information concerning my project in my question. The Skinnerz response reminded me that I have some scraps of fine mesh stainless steel screen termite shield and I will give that a try rather than mylar for my wallet and passport case.

Multirotor used as a signal relay?

So in my years since first asking a question about electronics on here i have learned a whole lot. So much so that i am working on plans to build my own multirotor, rc car, and control system all from scrap and open source parts. Everything will be arduino controlled for simplicity (i think it will be easier this way) and i would like to use the OrangeRx radio modules.\ So my question is this; if i wanted to put an fpv system on my car and drive it long distances through a neighborhood, how difficult would it be to have a drone follow the car and act as a relay beacon for my transmitter. I know i could easily get the drone to follow the car by using gps but I have no ideas on how to make it a relay, or if thats even economically feasible on a hobby scale.

Improving Signal of FM Transmitter

I recently bought the C. Crane FM transmitter. I have not had much luck with it even after turning up the pot as described on the internet. However, I am not giving up yet. Below are some possible things that I have thought of to improve the sound quality of the radio at a distance from the transmitter. 1. run wire from the antenna of the FM transmitter to the ductwork in my house. I already tried this. I had better luck attaching the wire to the exterior of the ductwork in my basement rather than the interior of the ductwork. 2. create some sort of repeater(s) to get around walls. This device would have to be a receiver/transmitter. 3. create my own FM transmitter with the best parts that I can find. 4. Use a homeplug system. Your suggestions are much appreciated. I don't know a darn thing about electronics so if you have any recommendations for good books that would be nice.
