Is it possible to produce a sound wave that makes us experience silence?

What I mean is: a computer or whatever produces that sound and we can't listen to anything, not even our own speach. That would make us experience TOTAL silence. Is it physically possible? That would rock. :) Thanks, Pedrotome

Cubicle Voice Silencer/Muffler

Hi I work in a cubicle environment with no white noise so a mouse fart can be heard across 8 cubicles in either direction. I've already been pulled in by my manager because of complaints about my voice when I'm on the phone. Can anyone come up with some device that can be placed over mouth and phone to muffle the voice? I thought of a sponge foam half sphere but I haven't tried or tested it. I'd need to find one as well! Thanks... and my co-workers will thank you as well!

air mattress pump silencer

I have a big air mattress that I use frequently, but the electric pump is so loud that the apartment neighbors complain.  It takes 3-5 minutes to inflate, which is an eternity of noise when you're setting things up at night.   I just wondered if there might be a way to dampen the sound without having to use a foot pump or just leave the mattress inflated it at all times. Any ideas, anyone?

Job - Silence your neighbour

I want someone who can actually create the setup described here - lifehacker.com/5852903/silence-noisy-neighbors-by-transmitting-signals-through-their-own-speakers.  My neighbour is very noisy and they don't decrease it no matter what. If someone can build the setup or come with their plan to achieve the goal, I can pay whatever you demand.  My neighbour has 3 loudspeakers and 2 big-box speakers. He uses an amplifier with a CD in it. He also uses few mics sometimes for his band to sing. they sometime sing for 24 straight hours.  Please help and advice.

Alright, I moved into my basement over the summer, and there's always some noise going down in the boiler room across the hall, and from the sewage pipe in the storage room. It's annoying when I'm trying to sleep, and google gives me no methods of silencing them. So, if you pros had to silence a water boiler and a sewage pipe (PVC)?

Outdoor water fountain...how to silence homemade pump

Hi Guys, I love this website. I've been living in Egypt and can't really do all the hobbies that I love. We recently moved and I have a little patio area. So I wanted to build a waterfall. It's 10 feet high and I didn't realize it would be such a futile task trying to find a water pump that will pump that high. So I decided to make one. I attached some images showing the centrifugal pump made from two plastic containers, a water bottle, plastic coat hanger, and construction adhesive that is driven by a drill. It works really well. It gets up to the twelve feet I currently have the hose running up to. But in order to do this, the drill has to be almost full speed which is obnoxiously loud.  I'm looking for some ideas on either how to silence the drill motor, or go a different route. I have to rebuild the shaft as I snapped the plastic rod (hanger) I was using, so I'm open to some rebuild ideas. Thanks so much for the input! I'll post a tutorial once I get a fully functional, stable, and practical prototype.

Is it be possible to set up noise-cancelling speakers to create silence at a certain position?

Is it possible to position a pair of speakers in such a way that they create a bubble of silence? Say you were to play a sound through one speaker whilst playing its inverse through the other. If you were to place your head at a very exact point between them, would the sound disappear? I am interested to know if this is possible in theory but also if it would be feasible for layman to do.

Tone control circuits do not work with lm386 basic amp. Why? Answered

Hello. I have breadboarded an lm386 audio amp (I believe that it resembles this one). I use a gain control pot of 1KOhm between 1 and 8 pins with a 10uF cap... Working as it should... Now I want to have tone control. Like treble/mid/bass or anything... (and the problem starts): I breadboarded this tone control circuit* and I connected the output of the amp to the tone control circuit input.  Then the tone control circuit output to the speaker (the other speaker end to Ground - of course) and... silence... Tried many times to rewire the circuit (checked the cables many times)  but nothing happened. So I decided something different: I saw this tone control circuit. Much less appealing but nice too. I breadboarded it with 200KOhm pots*. The output of the amp to the input of this circuit and output of it to the speaker... silence again... So clearly there is something I do wrong. Both circuits must work, I mean the first one is used in many Fender amps... I believe that the "output of the amp to the tone stack input" is the spot that needs some adjustment but I don't know how to fix it. I used to be a hard electronics guy (motors, CNCs...) and I don't get the audio signals very well. Please help me! * I used 200KOhm and 20KOhm pots everywhere. The closest to the real values I have... I also tried everything with 1KOhm and 10KOhm... silence again...

The fan would be driven on 12v Adapter (or 9v for silence and life) and would suck air through the filter. The dust would then stick to the outside surfaces of the filter, which can be brushed off / Vacumed later. Any Pros/ Cons/ Ideas? Jump in! People!

Question regarding Music to LEDs performance improvement.

I recently built the simple circuit that everyone has seen on Instructables on how to sync LEDs to music using the 3.5 audio jack from your computer. I had a couple question on how to improve the performance. The lights bump to the music accordingly, but it has to be a profound change in sound for the lights to really look cool. (Like from silence to a bass hit) Is there a way to improve upon this? To make the lights respond in a clearer way when there is a lot of stuff going on in the song? Perhaps a different voltage? (Currently using a 9v battery to power the system) The sound on my computer has to be turned up quite high for the circuit to respond. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

The VQS range

Hi! These are my guns that are coming out in September when i can get my camera sorted. I've actually finished the 1st one, the SS-90 and this can be found here: instructables.com/id/90_SS_Desechos_P_90. Now these will be the VQS range after the initials of the latin for 'swift and silent'; 'volitas quod silensis'. You know in car firms like Mercedes and Audi you have upgrade lines? AMG and the 'S' line respectively. Well , this is one for knex guns. So for example, the P-90 style gun will be the (VQ)90-SS . V, Q, 90 (as in P-90) ,S ,S(sears sytsem). They all have individual names as well. Here is the guns they are based on - 1. Will be the SS-LE/'Bastille'. This is an old MK. 2 Sten. It has a firing pin and a side loading mag, with a working silencer (hopefully). 2,3 and 4. This is finished ! The 90-SS/'Desechos' - Spanish for refusal. This next gun is a cross between these 2. It has a sears system and 6/10 round hopper - also TOTAL customisability. 5. Hopefully the next to be built. Will be the M-1G/'Adamantine'. An M1 Garand. 6+7. Will be the CD-94/'Flint'. A cross between these 2, although they are essentially the same. The first is a Mauser C96 'Broomhandle', the 2nd a DL44 blaster used by Hans Solo. 8+9. Will be the HM-5S/Cetaebro - Greek for dangerous shadow. These are the H&K MP5SD and the MP5 Navy repectively. Hopefully it will be a choice of 2 - real semi auto, or firing pin for proper power. A detachable silencer too. Note: 10. I could be trying to make a Henry Repeater Action .22 rifle too.

How do you modify a thunder strobe to make it realistic?

I have  a Cannon Thunder Strobe w/sound effects.  I would like to make it act more like a real thunder/lightening storm.  The flash from the strobe and then the roll of thunder.  Right now, out of the box, it just flashes normally and the effect plays.  It does not look like a real lightening flash with thunder.  It needs to have a major pause between lightening flashes so the thunder can roll, then silence and darkness.  I have seen it done in Halloween Spirit stores, but the employees did not know how it was done.  It was fixed up by someone else.Any help will be appreciated.Jeff

true mag shot assault rifle

Hello everyone I would like to tell you about my new weapon system. That uses a easy load mag like Ironman69's. It will come in 4 slightly different versions that will include. The standard version that will have a full stock, hand grip, and iron sights. Then there is the para-trooper version that will have a twiggy stock and will be a little smaller and it will have vertical fore grip and iron sights just like the standard version. Then there will be compact version that will just have a shorter barrel than the para-trooper. Then there is a special forces edition that will have a mock silencer, a longer fore grip with side rails for flash lights and laser pens, and will come with a mock scope. At the moment I do not have a date of release.

Airsoft Knife? PLZ REED KTHX

When you have an airsoft war, do you use knives? I don't mean real knives, of course, I mean something that you could use to simulate a silent melee attack.'Cause I have an idea. What if you made a thingy, that when you push it against an object (an enemy, in this case) it would let loose an airsoft BB, "killing" the target, like a knife? Huh, huh? Good idea, right? Also, check out my new slideshow.Airsoft Gun SilencerAlso also, when/if you play airsoft, what exactly counts as a kill? One shot, anywhere? And do you know you've died when you get hit (when you feel the sting)? Do you use the honor system?

Free to Good Home

Just an Idea but if someone can market it feel free to, just send me one LOL. There are many medical alert necklaces / bracelets etc out there for people act risk of falling which is a good thing, but the catch to all of them is the monthly cost of subscribing to some monitoring service and $20 a month doesn't sound much but to someone on a fixed income it can be a big deal. It seems reasonable that someone out there could come up with a simple system using off the shelf stuff for a transmitter and receiver set up and hit the button and the receiver dials the first of say three numbers with a recorded message. It would dial out until it received a human, have it wait for the tone of someone pushing one or something and then play a recorded message "Help I've fallen and can't get up" or something and send help to 1313 Mockingbird Lane. You could put a relative or a neighbor first and a second perhaps then 911 or if the person is likely to need fast medical help have it dial straight to 911 but make it simple to program. Make the necklace / pendant play a sound when it's been activated and maybe make a 20 second pause before it dials out so people could cancel accidental triggers by picking up the phone or something, which cancels the tone from the pendant but leave the tone on once the first number has been dialed incase the victim loses consciousness so first alerters can find them quicker. Put a silence button on the receiving unit but disengage the phone silencing option in case the first person there picks up the phone... This seems a simple concept that people could sell for like $40 and I'd bet all my donuts there is a big market for something like this in that range, plus it would help a lot of people by taking away some of the fear of living alone as we age... And we all age. Any thoughts? Could it fly?

Voice changers

I know voice changers have been done, but theres only 2 instructables for some rather simple changers and other forum queries are quite old. What I'm looking for is a diy, real time voice changer circuit that can alter pitch and modulation, preferably with pots for fine tuning rather than presets, hopefully without the tinny sound I hear from the majority of samples I've listened to. An amped output with volume control would be cool too to overpower the users voice a bit easier. I'm looking for an output akin to this as an ideal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqr5K0K4wL4 I'm no stranger to micro electronics, I can read codes and, with a little review, understand gates and ICs but still have no clue how to design my own circuits to do more than flipflop and turn things on and off. Any ideas ? Kits, DIY plans etc ? Simple and portable is better, want to incorporate it into a costume.

Asking parents for tobacco pipe, help please

Dear Instructables community,      I am 16, closer to 17 and for some reason i find nostalgia in pipe smoking. I have never known any pipe smokers but most people in my family have smoked at one time to another. I am wondering if i should ask my parents if  i can smoke a tobacco pipe or just wait in silence till i am 18 and buy it regardless of their opinion. For all those who are going to try to warn me to the risks of tobacco i know. It is proven that pipe smokers also live 2 years longer on average by the surgeon general. Also it would be legal because i spend my summers in Massachusetts where tobacco can be gifted by parents or guardian. None of my friends smoke pipes, i don't think its very popular in my age group at all i want to do it for me, why i am not sure.                                                                                                                     Thankyou

Archery question: What are the pros/cons to having static limbs Vs Ordinary limbs on an English longbow?

I am looking to build, from scratch, (not even a pre-cut board to start), a 6 foot longbow from Osage Orange wood, and I am looking at different designs. People say that a static tip versus a working tip will improve the speed and silence of the bow. However, different people say that it does not increase the performance of the bow, and will make the possibility of twisting the limbs when stringing it that much higher. Below is a pretty accurate basic shape model of what I want it to look like, but without the scrollwork/external artistic detailing. (Copyright to this image goes to Medieval Collectibles. I do not own this picture.) I love the look of it, and the idea of having a completely silent bow is attractive. But I want a bow that lasts my entire life. Does anyone have info on pros and cons? Also, if ANYONE knows where to get schematics/instructions for building a bow like this, it would be awesome if you could show me where to get them. (Pay close attention to the shape of the tips!)

Homemade submersible pump - white smoke

Hi, I posted this topic: https://www.instructables.com/community/Outdoor-water-fountainhow-to-silence-homemade-p/ and both repliers suggested that I get a submersible pump. Being in Egypt, I can't find one unless I pay ridiculous amounts of money. So, I made one using a handhelp air blower.  It works, it gets the water up to the 10-12 feet easily. It is waterproof. No leaks. (There was a small leak before revising, but now none) I've only had it on for a max of 30 seconds for testing. At about 30 seconds, when I pull it out, the box is filled with white smoke. Smells almost like electrical burn but not quite. What would be the causes of this? Is the water too much strain on the motor to turn? Is there maybe some water droplets that were just burning off? Is my pvc pipe enough ventilation for the motor as it does get hot, but I don't know how hot is too hot? Could I use a dimmer switch to turn the motor down some, would that not put so much strain on the motor instead of having it at full speed? Sorry for so many questions. Thanks!

How to wire a light to an alarm clock?

Where I work during the summer I consistently have to switch between the day and night shifts. This happens every month or so and during the first week of transition I have a rather hard time waking up especially from transition from day to night shifts where I have to sleep during the day. Thus it is dark when I am supposed to wake up. Although I have not been late yet there have been quite a few "near-misses". Anyway I want to know if anyone can help me wire a light to my alarm clock to help this. My alarm clock alternates between a one second-ish noise to an equal length silence and repeats. I would like it to turn on and off in the same fashion as the alarm clock makes noise. I do not have much electrical know how, but I am adequate at soldering both wires and on boards. I have tested the output of the wires leading to the speakers and they do not have enough power to turn on the bulb. It would also be nice if can be done on a wallet friendly cost, college is eating up most of my money. Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance!
