Small LCD

I've been working on the OggVOSH... I was planning the screen & touch-wheel board when I realized that the screen, and the backup were both too big, ironically, was too big in BOTH dimensions!I've checked mouser & digikey, and neither have any LCDs that would fit in the space. By any chance, does anyone know of a really small color LCD? The board is 28x48mm, and I can't have it take up the whole board (but some stuff *can* go beneath it, I just need to account for the connector)

Small generators.

Most everyone here knows (I assume) how the generators work in RC cars and there's an instructable that shows it can be used to output electricity. Elementary science at it's best. If any of you have took them apart you'd notice it draws eletricity from touching the center metal pole. Two little brush/copper/zinic contacts. Basically I've been trying to think of ways to extract eletricity without having a need for them. They cause friction. Uh-oh, a few lightbulbs lit up in peoples minds by now and they're going "oh no not another person trying to beat the laws of thermodynamics and acheive perpetual motion" Yep. As we all know eletricity CAN jump if it's powerful enough and arc, but this doesn't make it too safe either. However it's a small scale model to start out and can be contained so the arc won't be a problem. My other problem is the calculations. They need to be precise. To get it working I need a low rpm generator that will generate high output. For this it requires torque which kinda kicks me, it will also need to use (I assume) rare earth magnets. So basically lets stick with my latter problem since it's more down to earth. I need a fairly small generator if possible (It can be larger if no other solutions are present) At least the size of a walnut I don't plan to make anything immense in size as I lack the funding. As pointed, small is key. Not to be redundant but to paint a clearer picture. It will also need to generate decent voltage at a low rpm speed. I cannot emphasis this enough because it's one of the key parts to make my idea function. Hum... Yeah that about covers it. So if any tech wiz's are out there that know of such thing I'd apperecaite it if you'd part the knowledge to me :P I'm also very aware that perpetual motion is eh, impossible... by current standards. The intention of this project is to deepen my knowledge and figure out why things won't work, figure out solutions and on so forth. A learning project for now and perhaps one day it might become something far more awesome.

Small circuits and Small circuit wire? Answered

Hi,  I am new to the fiddling with wires stuff. Just about to dismantle a bluetooth headset and I notice that the wire inside is tiny!! I intend to lengthen the wire to the microphone and earpiece but my wire is nowhere near as thin. Will it make the circuit run slower if I put thick wire on thin wire?  If I need it, where can I get thin wire from in the UK?  Also, is there a better nomenclature for thin wire or thick wire or have I nailed it? Thanks in advance Phil

Small Site Changes

I've just released a small set of changes: new footer featured and popular items are now split out by channel home page shows both featured and popular items in the same list searching on an exact channel name gets you to the main page for that channel various small formatting fixes There is also a new backend process to check for Pro members whose membership is about to expire but is not set to be automatically charged, to email them and see if they want to renew it.  However we screwed this up a little, as the email text wasn't completed and it is pretty much incomprehensible. Some of you will have received a rather confusing email, which you can totally ignore; we'll fix this and try it again in another couple of days.  My apologies to anyone who got that! Also for a short time there was a display problem for all unpublished instructables (and like 20 published ones), but that has been fixed.  If you were editing during this time don't fear, your work was not lost.  Go try again now.

Small change release

Just a few changes this time around.  You'll notice the header - we made it a bit shorter to use less screen real estate, and less ... orange (personally I liked the orange but many found it distracting). The main thing is that we've opened up Guide writing to all Pro users.  We're soft-starting this, it's not being announced anywhere but here as yet, so we can start out easy and see how it goes.  Guides are awfully useful and we figure more should be better but it's also good to start small sometimes. Also we're starting a new ad campaign with Dremel and there's some special content we had to prepare for that.  You'll see it very shortly!

A small house on a roof?

Hiya all! I sometimes go to my grandmother's house, and there is an abandoned Karate club or something near it. Recently, I got bored so I went outside. I circled around that building a couple of times, and I noticed that I can climb to it's roof! It's not too high, about only 5 meters or so. The roof is awesome! It's flat, and then I came up with an awesome idea - how about building a small house there? Just for the fun of it, it could be an awesome place to come with friends. I need the floor to be at least 2x2 meters, height 1.5-2 meters. I need the house to be made of cheap and available materials. Got any ideas?

Small Musical Components

I've got an idea in my head, but there's one part that may unravel the whole thing so I thought there would be no better place to ask than here! I'm wondering if there are any tiny devices that will play a given song (on repeat likely) when power is supplied to the device? If you've ever seen one of those birthday cards that plays music when they open then you have a pretty good idea of what I mean. I'm looking for something that would fit inside of an area about half an inch deep by an inch across. Something like you'd see inside of a music box (except scaled down) - does this sort of thing exist? Much thanks! - JM

Small led driver?

I need a chip that will be able to power  5 or more LEDs not past like 10 though cause it's not necessary channels of LEDs ,I want to be able to have each channel doing different patterns at the same time, blinking ,fading ,or just on.  (it doesn't matter how much MA the chip can handle as I will be using transistors to amplify the signal ,most likely) It needs to be able to fit in a 1/2 inch tube. I think this one will work but im not sure. http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/product.do?id=NCP1840 I think this will only work on printed PCBs if I can i'd rather have something i can wire up with ether perfboard or wires.

Ventilation In A Small Forge?

Hi all, Im trying to build a small forge in my small tin shed (9'x11') , due to noise and residential location everything must be inside and the sound proofing makes it pretty airtight, therefore I'm relying 110% on good ventilation design to avoid CO poisoning. The coke forge is in and flued using the side sucker design and 12" insulated duct, so far this works well with the addition of incoming air from the rear of the shop and I have been able to use reasonable quality test equipment to measure CO at acceptable levels (only under ideal conditions, further testing to follow). I have also thought of adding a propane forge (only one forge be used at any one time) but worry about the increased levels of CO produced, I have toyed with the idea of a hood which encompasses the mouth of the forge which would be ducted at 45 degrees into the main stack for the other forge (I would like to minimise roof penetrations if possible) I have made a rough sketch (in paint sorry) to demonstrate what I mean, do you think a fanned draught inducer is necessary/useful, we don't use them much in the UK so im not sure how much draught they induce :),  is the flue angle/ bends going to reduce efficiency greatly and would adding a fan to the intake to change to positive pressure internally make that much difference?  Any other ventilation advise would be greatly appreciated, including anything to help understand the maths required to calculate correct air volumes etc, I'm fairly serious about doing this correctly, understand in some detail the dangers of CO exposure and would not concider continuing without thorough testing for safety. Thanks in advance, drawing not even slightly to scale :)

One Small Slip...

Two Bangladeshi newspapers have apologised after publishing an article taken from a satirical US website which claimed the Moon landings were faked. The Daily Manab Zamin said US astronaut Neil Armstrong had shocked a news conference by saying he now knew it had been an "elaborate hoax".Neither they nor the New Nation, which later picked up the story, realised the Onion was not a genuine news site. Both have now apologised to their readers for not checking the story."We thought it was true so we printed it without checking," associate editor Hasanuzzuman Khan told the AFP news agency."We didn't know the Onion was not a real news site." The Onion article claimed that Armstrong had been convinced by a website written by a part-time librarian;"It only took a few hastily written paragraphs published by this passionate denier of mankind's so-called 'greatest technological achievement' for me to realize I had been living a lie, " said a visibly emotional Armstrong, addressing reporters at his home. "It has become painfully clear to me that on July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module under the control of my crew did not in fact travel 250,000 miles over eight days, touch down on the moon, and perform various experiments, ushering in a new era for humanity. Instead, the entire thing was filmed on a soundstage, most likely in New Mexico."Obviously, this is a major embarrassment for the newspapers involved, and clearly shows how modern "journalism" is really just copy-paste-spin (witness The Daily Mail's recent "pregnant immigrant" slant on UK population data)You've got to wonder, though - how much other net-sourced nonsense has made it to the headlines as "news"?The Onion articleManabzamin newspaperNew Nation (Tagline: "Bangladesh's Independent News Source"!)

Commentary on "Small Site Changes"

In the Site Updates forum, the goddess of code Rachel reported on last night's minor roll-out: I've just released a small set of changes: new footer featured and popular items are now split out by channel home page shows both featured and popular items in the same list searching on an exact channel name gets you to the main page for that channel various small formatting fixes I wanted to make some comments on two of these changes, both pro and con. The new footer is different, to be sure, but I don't think it's too bad. All the information is there, and relatively straightforward. Having the search box at the top and the bottom is a great idea! The extremely dark background is not very accessible, though. I think a pale grey (the same grey used in the header) with normal black text would be a better choice for our low-vision users. I'm not particularly happy with having the Featured and Popular stuff jumbled up together, and indistinguishable. Those two states are really different, and the have different implications for the Instructables involved. If you're going to jumble them up, could you at least put the nice Featured banner onto the thumbnails?  UPDATE 23 Apr 2010:  They've added the banner to the home-page giant thumbnails, and have created a new Popular banner as well. Also, many thanks to Rachel for fixing my very own bug! Now the masthead (and new footer) are properly rendered even when I use the horizontal scroll bar.

Small KNEX rack and pinion.

Hello everybody it's been a long time since I have posted a forum topic on here but I just built a a new KNEX rack and pinion I would like to so everybody. The only other rack and pinion on Instructables was made by Killer~SafeCracker but it was huge and not to practical to put into a model. So here is a new rack and pinion that I made and it's way smaller then the one built by Killer~SafeCracker. The secret to this design is that it' uses a Micro KNEX to build the rack. I think there is a lot of neat things that could be made with this so please tell me what you come up with!
