I am trying to build a smart charger that will charge a Ni-Mh 2/3a 1200mah 9.6v charger. By smart I mean that it will stop when the battery is full, then if it drops below, say 9.4v, it will charge it to that again. Most of them also have a discharging button that will bring the voltage down before charging it. Of course, mine is 9.6v, so it would have to be modified. The current "dumb" charger for the battery just gives it 12v @ 250ma. The smart charger also is powered off 220vac, which is not good because I live in the US. IS there a way to make it work off the 12v 250ma charger? Also, the circled components (the overlay thingy wasn't working), what are they? the no/nc one might be a switch, and the RL1 one could be...a relay?

On all the airsoft smart chargers I have looked at, they all say you can only charge high drain batteries. My battery doesn't really specify whether it is high drain or not. It doesn't make sense to not be able to charge it with a smart charger if it is not high drain. My battery is 8.4 volt 1600 mah stick type.

Hello, I have a HP Smart AC/Auto/Air Combo Adapter, and today it began to fail. To get it to work I have to shake the adapter itself mulitple times, and then it starts to work, and works without a problem. It has only begun to do this occasionally, but it is getting really annoying. Does anyone know what could be wrong with it? Thanks!

I would like to build a charger wherein I could specify up to what voltage to charge my nicads and nimh batteries. I'm currently using a la crosse bc-700 smart charger. it usually charges my batteries to 1.44-1.46v. I would like to build a charger that will cut off, say 1.38v. Is that possible? Thanks.

Okay so yes i have looked online for something but... im not the best at knowing what features is best i have about $60 so im looking for something $60 or less, i seen some on a site but now that i have the money.. it's not there anymore (which sucks) - I need something to charge devices fast - hold a charge for a long time - charge up from the sun fast enough - NOT a charger that charges by USB but a charges by.. Solar energy (obviously) - and need it to be able to charge multiple types of devices like a... PSP, touchpads, smart phones, etc... if it can only charge 1 thing at a time then thats fine too, if it can charge more than 1 at a time.. even better, color obviously does not matter so does anybody know of any like this? if you can help, thank you

I bought this cheap charger that charges 2 Li-ion 18650 on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/182586752606?ssPageName=S...But it charges them in PARALLEL!So if I put charge two batteries that have a different voltage, the charger will drain one and charge the other one at a pretty high current.If one battery is older, or has a different chemistry, it must not healthy to charge both.If I decide to charge only one, will it push too much current into it?If someone accidentally inserts one in reverse...If you want to charge 2 batteries that are exactly the same, make the charger a built-in feature in the device that uses the batteries, why disconnect them. Concept : design onboard lipoly charger system to extend flight time on giant scale electric plane. 1) if this is even a worth while project, the trade off of course is weight / power , can enough be created from a micro generator to make a differance, or would additionals 6 cell lipoy be more sensible , configuration = OS max 40 nitro motor / brushless 400 kv outrunner / ac / dc conversion rectifier / dc voltage regulator / 12v dc lipoly balance charger to main bank of lipoly batteries / motors 2) I don't know how to build the rectifier bridge, so I would need some direction Any suggestions or thoughts on this project are appreciated. I'd like some help to settle an argument regarding my extemely simple automatic emergency light.According to my friend, who installs emergency lighting, this circuit is too simple and has too many components missing but I say he's wrong, if one part fails it can easily be replaced. I'm not and electronics expert either.I'll explain the circuit...5v comes from a 5v 2A phone charger. Battery is a 32Ah 12v SLA. 12v charger is a smart charger with built-in status monitor.SPDT 5v relay rated to switch 12v @ 17amp maxThe light is a 12v 5 metre LED Strip with built in current-limiters and draws arount 2A.Basically, 5v powers the relay which means the battery is connected to the smart charger that keeps it topped up while there is mains power (240v here in UK). If there is a power cut the relay turns off and battery is switches over to the LED light Strip. Its that simple.It works as designed, no parts have failed and I haven't found any signs of over-heating. My friend believes it should all be one circuit and not seperate parts and is a fire risk as it is.He just won't let it go, so does he have a point or is he just being a/an _________ (fill in the blank, lol)? I've included a schematic of the circuit. Not sure if I've drawn the relay properly though.

I have a 7.4V lithium polymer battery (http://www.all-battery.com/74volt-6000mahli-polypackwithpcb31185.aspx) and an 8.4V smart charger (http://www.all-battery.com/universalsmartchargerforli-ionpolymerbatterypack37v-148v1-4cells.aspx). The issue is that I need to power a device that needs 6V. If I put a voltage regulator in line with the battery leads I'm sure it'll work, but then how do I charge the battery with that charger, as the regulator will also reduce the 8.4V the battery needs for charging? Maybe by introducing some kind of "bare metal tap" upstream of the regulator, so when I plug in the charger it bypasses the regulator and wires straight to the battery? (see the attached illustration) Would this work? Or should I do something else?

We want to use them in boxing gloves or something like that to get sufficient energy to charge a phone.... Our Piezo plate has 3 wires as shown in the image... All these brands of dog fences out on the market and so many to choose from. I previously purchased one of the best ones you can get and unfortunately my dog got smart and tore the collar of the wall charger and shredded it to pieces. So instead of purchasing the expensive collar, it would be great to see someone build one of the system. Thank you for your help!

So, I was replacing a bad capacitor on a smart car battery charger. It was making a terrible whining noise, which the bad cap was causing. So, I replaced it. But, silly me, I installed it backwards, so when I powered it up, it vented up a storm. Now, the basement smells of burnt electrolytes. I've opened windows, and even had a fan running to draw air in, but that nasty smell lingers. What else could I try to rid of it?

Hello, Need a circuit design for the following requirement. Checked online available circuit designs but not sure if they meet all needs. Looking for circuit design as per following details. 1. It will have one or two, 3.7 volts 2600 mah 18650 lithium batteries 2. Batteries will be charged using smart phone mobile charger or solar panel 10 to 20 volts and around 500 mah to 1 ah input 3. Will have mini usb connection for the same on pcb 4. Circuit should have battery level indication. While being charged, when they are fully charged LED should turn on indicating battery full. Also there should be one LED to show that the charging is in progress. When the battery charge drops below specific level another LED should turn on. 5. If we use 2 batteries then they will be connected parallel 6. Output voltage of the batteries should be 5 volts (so step up is required) and current should be appropriate for mobile charging 7. There should be provision for 2 USB connections. Load can be mobile charging / USB mini fan / USB mini keyboard LED (could be 2 at a time) 8. Circuit should be safe enough so no damage is caused to batteries / load etc.

Using the same concept as diesel trains. As they drive / pull on electric. The drive train is actually electric . The noise we hear are the generators charging the power banks. . Electric are far more efficient than diesel or gas engine direct to the drive train. That being said. How can we set up micro scale generator on board 1/3 scale electric rc airplane. concept : connect 40 size os max rc nitro engine direct to 700 kv E. out runner shaft , rectifier bridge / 12 volt SMART lipoly charger, all this to enhance primary lipoy bank on large scale electric rc planes. ( increase flight time dramatically) sounds stupid I guess, but the concept apparently works in real world cargo trains. Can anyone help wth the system set up of rectifier bridge components to give this a shot ? I have no electrical expertise. Thanks Jeff

I have some perfectly good Nokia battery packs from useless 5165 phones (Model "bms-2s"). They are 3.6 - 3.7V NiMH and have 4 flat copper contacts which 'make' with the phones by sliding on. The Phones have matching 'teeth' and happily 'smart' charge either these or the newer LI batteries. (Clear pic here: http://www.jpldisplays.com.au/catalog/images/CPB-BLS2N.jpg ) I want to know if it is OK to simply connect the matching output from the charger across the +/- terminals (the 2 outer ones AFAIK...) and charge them directly ? These work great to power LEDs and I already made a 5165 LED torch, but it was a pain to do and I'd rather just use the batteries naked. Thanks for any info !

Hi all!I am competing in this solar boat race and one of their rules was that for a sprint race and a slalom race, the batteries have to be disconnected. We have 4 panels, each rated at 64W(18V), a victron MPPT 75v/15amp charger (bluetooth activated), 240W DC motor (up to 48V), 3000W PWM motor controller.My question is, how should I configure this electrical system with solar power only? Batteries have to be disconnected and not operable.Things that I've tried:I put 4 panels in series (72V) and connected them to the MPPT charger. Then the load I connected them to the PWM motor controller. This was not ideal since the motor barely got any power(very slow), and the panels would over volt up to 76V which was past the 75V as advertised and system goes into overvoltage protection.I also thought of connecting the leads of the solar panels in 36V config (2 parallel, 2 series) directly onto the PWM motor controller but decided that it was safer to ask y'all for some help first. Hello! I'm just getting my own cab company started in my medium sized town, and to begin I'll be using my personal vehicle - thus, I'm using items I can remove so I don't get harrassed on my days off, such as magnetic decals and a magnetic top light. My question is this: Is there a way to convert a 12V, 96 LED light over to battery power? The toppers use a direct cable to a car charger port, but I hate having that cord just hanging out in my cab. It is tacky and unprofessional - at the same time, I very much do not want to punch holes in the top of my car and wire it to my dome light. I have found several rechargeable, compact 12V batteries online, but I've no idea how I'd hook them up. I'm smart enough to know that I can't just wire it directly to the device - the battery would last minutes at most. I think I'd need some kind of transformer, perhaps? Any suggestions? I have to build a pack to run my portable N64. I have some experience building with NiMh and NiCad, but I havent built a li-ion yet. Ive done my research but would like some feedback before I start building. Parts 18650's - 3.7V 3600mAh ea 7.4V PCM for 18650 Li-Ion/ LiPo 7.4V Li-ion/LiPo charger at 1.2 Ah Plan Either to build a 2S2P pack or a 2S4P pack. Currently the N64, 7" TFT LCD, Controller, and Audio amp w/ 2x 8Ohm speakers is consuming just over 1A from what i can tell. its running off of a perfboard w/ regulator and rail, thats hooked up to a universal transformer that is set to 7.5V 1A. Everything works but when I turn the volume up it cuts off and then powers back on. I dont know any other way to find out the over all power consumption. I cant just look up all the specs because the LCD is from china and i dont have any specs. Anyway, back to my plan. obviousely I want as much run time as i can get out of it with out compromising weight and space. all componants of the portable can run off of 7.4V or lower, to include the lcd even though its rated at 12V. it can run as loas 6.5V. I have been debating between the 2S2P which should yeild 7.4V 7.2 Ah, and give me a runtime, some where in the ball park of 4 hours. or a 2S4P which should yield 7.4V 14.4 Ah. It would only be slightly more space and provide approximately 8 Hours+ Thats if I am even calculating everything right Ok, Regardless of whether i run a 2S2P or 2S4P the connections to the Protection Circuit will be the same, Right? Pos --> B+ Neg --> B- + to - ( Between Series connection) --> B1 or BM I understand that Li-Ion are safer when it comes to balancing then LiPo, but is this right? having 2 parallel cells or 4 parallel cells connected with the only balance connection between the series. I just want it to be safe. Next is the charging. I bought a cheap smart charger for 7.4V 1.2A output. Will it matter whether i build the 2S2P or 2S4P, or will it work for both. I know it will obviousely take twice as much time to charge with the bigger pack, but is their a max number of individual cells that a PCB can handle, or does it only matter the overall voltage? I also Included in my diagrahm a setup for a DPDT switch to change between pack powered, wall powered and battery charging. I want it to have an "ON" and "OFF" setting. while off, pack is disconnected and if wall charger is plugged in, it will charge the pack. while in the "ON" position, pack will power the device, but if wall charger is plugged in, then it will run off that. Can I even use a wall charger for the Li-Ion pack to power the device, or will it not work.??

Hello fellow followers of the 1s & 0s. Here is my idea. Everytime I travel my wife or I forget to update or profiles in the cellphones so we burn battery. I run waze, bluetooth streaming of Sirius Radio streaming as well as background syncing which kills the battery faster than it can charge. So here is my idea, Buy an Ankor 1200mAh battery backup/charger and hard wire it into the glove box so everytime I run the car the charger is getting topped off so I can use it either while driving or if the Zombie (more likely sunspot) apocalypse happens. Everytime my phone needs a charge my wife's phone decides it needs attention as well. This way I have 5 ports, ALL SMART, that I could always have ready. What do you think? Any reason I can't do this or shouldn't? Seeing that my Vibe has a 2-prong household-style plug on the instrument panel by the glove box, I'm thinking it should be an easy thing to wire. My only issue is the plug is rated 115volts, 100w, 1amp max. Not being an electron spec ialist I'm guessing it is too wee to power the brick battery. PS. If you were thinking of getting a new battery backup I love the one listed above. I appreciate all your help! @IdeaJason

I have a Samsung Galaxy S III cell phone with the original battery. It does not last near as long as i want it to. I can buy a better battery pack... but why? I found this ad for batteries. Why not hook them in parrallel and have a decent, log lasting backup? I just need some instructions before I trash a perfectly good smart phone.... Product Description: Brand new and high quality. I have a tornado shelterthat I have wired for both 120V AC and 12V DC. All of the lighting is via 12V DC while the AC is used for recharging the batteries and running a 1500 VA UPS system that powers a small TV and radio. The UPS system normally uses two small 12V SLA batteries in series. To increase the run time of the UPS I want to use auto batteries instead of the small SLA batteries normally used. In order to cut down on the cost of batteries I want to use two auto batteries, one 100AH battery used for the main lighting and a 50AH battery in series with the 100AH battery to provide the 24 volts for the UPS system. The UPS system will only use the two batteries when the AC is out which is normally rare. Do you see any problems with this setup providing I install a diode in the UPS battery feed to prevent the UPS from recharging the batteries and use separate smart chargers connected to each individual battery? I feel I have overlooked something but I can't seem to put my finger on it.

Having had to buy a dedicated charger for some 18650 cells (at my wife's insistence) I took an interest in these cells for the first time and their smaller cousins the 123a. At with maximum capacities I've come across so far of 3700mAh and 2000mAh respectivley that's twice the capacity of the battery in my smart phone and 2.5 times the capacity of the one in my basic bar phone. The smart phone width would accommodate 3 of the 18650 cells (6 days without charging at my rate of use) and the bar phone possibly 4 of the 123a's (70 hours talk time or 10 months on standby). Yes this would mean a custom made back, but there is at least one instructable on molding a GRP/ carbon phone back adjusting it to take extra cells and maybe ports just needs modeling clay. I suppose I could just carry a power bank, but why if the phone can be its own power bank? Removing the guts of a power bank and building a new phone back to accommodate them may be the simplest answer to this but, my questions are:- A) I've got old mobiles laying around could I use their charging circuits to charge these standard Li-ion cells? Assuming that is a yes that would mean a long charge every 6 days/ 10 months. I gather there are problems associated with parallel charging/ discharging of Li-ion cells and over discharging so, B) Any advice on doing this other than don't? On the assumption that's a don't or even if its not this strikes me as a safer possibility. C) Could a micro controller be configured to discharge one cell to its limit then switch to the next full cell. D) Could a micro controller be configured to charge one cell to capacity then look for the next under capacity cell and charge that. E) if so could it do both at the same time? If A is possible and the rest not then a multi position switch is probably the answer.

Hi! first of all happy being here in such a full and interesting community. Since some time i have an idea fix, i would like to play guitar in the street, not for the sake of money but for pure entertainment. Following that intention i´m being gathering all equipment i need for that purpose. I was asking myself the question about power source for all that stuff. Actually i can make it easy, since i already bought roland cube street, that runs on 6 AA batteries. BUT, i guess nobody here likes easy things. Therefore here is my project: using acoustic guitar with 4 effects and the amp running on the SAME external battery pack. short description of the project : 4s4p battery pack for a total of 14,8V and 12 000 Mah more or less.. will depend on cells themselves. Theoretically it will mean 10 hours or continuous run with all of equipment. of course there will be step down converter and other bells and whistles that i will be happy to share once i start doing it. Questions mainly are : I know that Boss pedals have center negative connection, What the hell does it mean? please someone help with this cause im getting mad. Is it just inverting the leeds? positive one going to the sleeve and negative/ground to the pin? OR it means that the pin has to be minus 9V? This is the main question as i dont want to burn 200 euros pedals second and less important one: i will mostly go with NCR18650GA units. And will arrange a balanced pack. As the charging rate is 1A rough it takes 3,5 hours to charge. If the total capacity is 12 amp as i'm planning will it be neccessary to wait 12 hours to charge it or 4s4p scheme will still need 3,5 hours to charge all of cells at the charge rate of 1A, can i also charge it at faster rate as cells state that discharge rate is10A and so i coud use up to 10A charger? Or maybe the smart chargers identify by themselves the best charge rate? thank you in advance please know it's my first project of the kind :D

Hi, I have a project that I'm trying to design/build and could use some help/advice with some of the electrical theory. I feel like this should be really simple but I'm having a lot of issues. I have done a lot of googling but can't seem to find applicable answers so I started my own thread. Any help will be greatly appreciated! If I can solve this, I will be happy to write up a detailed instructable so that others can use this information as well. The short version: Trying to build a lightweight solar panel>battery pack>UHF radio charging setup. Nominal voltage is all 12v. I'm having difficulty regulating amperage between the units. The long version: My friend is in charge of a campsite which needs to have a 2-way radio on at all times. They need to be able to charge these radios on-premise because they are out there for a little over a week at a time. A solar panel seems ideal for this application. The whole charging setup needs to be lightweight since it is a >10 mile hike into the campsite. Ideally, I would like to use an array of NiMH AA batteries because they are small, relatively cheap, and can be replaced easily if there is an issue. I am also under the impression that they handle repetitive charge/discharge cycles well. I am not married to that though so if there is a compelling reason to use lipo or something else, I am open to that. The radio: is a Motorola Radius CP200. The wall charger that comes with it outputs 14v at 1.5 amps. The battery in the radio (according to the sticker on it) is 7.4v 16.21Wh lithium ion. Setup 1 that I've been trying: I have a 12v solar panel charging a pack of AA NiMH batteries. I started with an 8-pack holder but moved up to a 10-pack to increase voltage and total mAH a little. I've been using little voltage regulators in between the solar panel and the batteries as well as between the batteries and the radio. These function as diodes and help me get the correct charging voltage. My problem is that I can't regulate the amperage. The battery pack will pull as much as it can from the solar panel, and the radio will pull as much as it can from the battery pack. What ends up happening is when I first plug the radio into the battery pack, it works fine. But after a couple minutes, the amperage skyrockets to like 3 or 4 or more amps. The voltage regulator hits some sort of thermal protection limit and the whole thing shuts down. I tried throwing this amperage regulator in there as well to keep it below 1.5 amps, naively thinking that it would just affect the amperage and not the voltage. But what happens is when it's in constant amps mode, it just cuts the voltage to compensate and keeps the total power the same. Setup 2 that I've been trying: I thought maybe since I was having issues with the 'smarts' of these batteries charging and discharging, I would switch over to USB battery packs since they have a lot of built-in protection circuitry. I got this solar charger, an older version of this battery pack, and used the same voltage regulators to step up the voltage from 5v to 14v to charge the radio. I get the same issue of high-amperage discharging of the battery pack. I tried using this step-up converter between the battery pack and the radio but it doesn't seem to work or maybe I'm not using it correctly (I can't seem to get the adjustment pots to actually do anything...). It seems like I'm thinking about current wrong or something. Any suggestions or insight into what's wrong with my approaches would be super helpful. If anyone has any suggestions for radically changing my approach, I'm open to those as well. Thanks for reading!

It may be a bit narcissistic for me to think anyone missed me or even noticed I was gone, but for those of you that did notice heres the low-down.Without a doubt, the time I spent working at Instructables last summer was the most fun I have ever had in my life. It was the perfect combination of working among smart creative individuals ( Eric, Christy, Tim, Paul, and Noah), having such an open ended job where I was actually paid to do what I love, and being in bright sunny free thinking northern California. The cherry on top of this summer of awesomeness was going to Burning Man (see pic below). It was something I had wanted to do ever since I had read about it online many years ago, and, as fate would have it, I ended up going the first year I was actually old enough to.I don't think I am ever going to forget driving Tim's manual truck (I don't know how to drive stick) on a deserted road in Nevada, at 3:30 am Sunday morning, the energy drinks wearing off and Tim sleeping peacefully in the passenger seat, while it rained intermittently, with only a vague idea where I was going, and doing this all with just a NY state learners permit. Nor will I forget getting my first sight of the playa, just as the sun was coming up, with all the massive metallic sculptures glistening on the horizion. The week that followed was just pure surreal amazingness. Anything I wrote about my first Burning Man experience wouldn't give it justice, but Tim describes it nicely in his Burning Man instructable.The most surprising thing about the summer though, was that by the end of it I actually looked forward to going back to school. I wanted to learn circuit building and other cool electrical engineering skills that I could incorporate into my future Instructables projects. I wanted to be able to post impressive electronic projects, instead of just minor circuit hacks like the tazer glove and capacitor charger. I wanted to master the movement of the electron.One plane trip from SFO to JFK later, I'm back home. The contrast between Frisco and NY was staggering. If there was one word to describe how NY looked to me at that time it would be "gray". The experience was like watching the Wizard of Oz in reverse, going from the bright, colorful, surreal land of Oz back to black and white Kansas. Don't get me wrong, I love my hometown. I am of the opinion that NYC is the single greatest city in the world (California wins as a state, but in terms of a single city nothing can compare to NY). If you don't agree with me, stand in the center of the Brooklyn Bridge and turn around to get a full 360 degree perspective. Your opinion will be swayed if not changed. Still, September 07 was a very gray month for me. It took me a few weeks to wade through the bureaucratic bullshit of Brooklyn Poly and finally get registered for classes. The classes I did get registered for were all prerequisites and nowhere near my area of interest. I know I am going to have to suck it up and complete them eventually (especially now that my school has merged with NYU, so I get to graduate with a much more impressive degree then the school I was originally accepted into), but at the time I was just too miserable and distracted to pay attention in class. It was even hard for me to respond to e-mails from summertime coworkers because hearing about the activities at the tower brought back memories of a happier time. I was in a state of near-complete mental shutdown, my creativity was shot, and I was depressed. I decided that I needed to take a break from school, so I took a leave of absence for the Spring semester. That leave of absence bought me a time period of 8 months to do whatever I wanted. I figure why not live out my weaboo fantasy, and travel to Japan. I can not say exactly when my obsession with Japanese culture began. Maybe it was subconsciously planted in my brain with the cherry tree in front of my childhood home, cultivated with anime, and brought to fruition when I actually started reading about their history and culture. Whatever the reason, it has been something I've always wanted to do, and what better time to "find myself" then while on a break from college (Its stereotypical-tastic!). There was only one obstacle standing between me and the romantic imagery I had of bathing in hot-springs and meditating in front of Shinto shrines ... money, at least a few thousand dollars of it. Japan aint cheap, and even if I was going to get a job to support me while I was there, I would still need a butt-load of money for the initial travel and living investment. (On that note if any of you Instructablites knows someone in Japan who you could get me in touch with regarding job opportunities or living quarters, or has some advice for living cheaply while there, I'm all ears) I spent most of January half-assedly looking for a job. I did not devote my whole ass to the task because, no matter how much I wanted to go to Japan, I wasn't too excited about the prospect of getting a minimum wage job which utilized none of my skills (I have very unique skills, so finding a job that used them would be next to impossible). It was looking as though my next few months would be filled with minimum wage menial labor. That is until I thought of throwing myself on the mercy of Eric and Christy, and asking for my old job back. I lacked the testicular fortitude to ask them directly, and so reverting to grade school mentality (the one that figures rejection will hurt less through proxy), I asked Tim to test the waters and see if my old job was still available (grade school version: Psst Tim, I've got a crush on Eric & Christy ::school girl giggles:: can you ask if they like me). Tim was kind enough to oblige. A few e-mails later I found out I could come back as long as I promised to return to school in September. (This was no problem because I had already made the same promise to my parents, and myself because I didn't want to loose my 20k a year scholarship).One plane trip at the end of February from JFK to OAK later, I'm back in California. My longterm goal for the next few months is to live as cheaply as possible, learn Japanese, and try to acquire some work that I can do while in Japan. Living cheaply has been easier then expected. I quit smoking (something I thought would be much harder then it was, but after two months of lukewarm-turkey I was able to eliminate my nicotine cravings entirely). I am able to feed myself almost entirely off the excess of others, with the occasional purchased produce being the exception. I bike for transportation (that same yellow road bike in the picture below). I'd say that overall, it took more effort to stop being a consumer-whore then it did to quit smoking, but it feels equally good to be free of both of those bad habits. Well thats my story.
