It's so easy to get into a rut and sometimes it's necessary to shake yourself out of it. So I'd like to issue a challenge to everyone to Make Something New. So here's what I'm proposing. You have until Sept. 21 to make something new for you and document it with a slideshow, video, or Instructable here on Instructables. Show what you've made and provide an explanation of how it's new for you. Reward: An achievement patch. So what is "new"? Anything you make right now will be new, but "new" here is talking about the experience of making the item. You can do something that's been done before by others, but the goal is to stretch yourself in a new direction. I don't know what everyone has done before so we'll be relying on the honor system, but I'd like you to push yourself. If you're always sewing clothes and are simply trying a new pattern that may be a little new to you, but it's not much of a stretch because you're using the same materials, tools, and skills that you already know. But if you've never done any metalwork and were to weld together a bike frame that would be very new.In your explanation of how your entry is new, be sure to talk about those things. What new materials, tools, skills, or designs are you using that you've never used before? How different is this from what you usually make?OK, to sum it up: - Make something new - Document it and post it on Instructables by 9/21 - Post a new comment here with a link to your post

Dont get me wrong here but the new ads in the middle of the instructables are really annoying. I will get use to them and I am glad instructables is getting some money. One thing I have found is that in general rss feeds dont have ads so I think I might start reading instructables in thunderbird or google reader. Another idea is that maybe there could be an ad free version of instructables for $10 bucks a year or something like that. I imagine that you could get a lot more money like that then with ads. Also I was wondering, does instructables get money every time I click on an ad or every time I buy something after clicking on the ad. Thanks Joe

I've got a new shed! I am now the proud possessor of two sheds. The new one is just storage - garden chairs, tents (we have six tents, but there are only four people in the household - how did that happen?), lawnmower etc, which means I now have something novel in my original shed - space to work! At the same time, I've bought myself a new toy - a scroll saw (or fret saw, if you prefer), a Ferm FFZ-400N, if you're bothered by that kind of thing. It's second hand, and only has one speed and no manual, but it was also only £20. So, I'm now practising - I bought some cheap ply, and I'm working on a new project, which I hope to post by Wednesday. Unfortunately, there's a bit of a hiatus, since I've managed to snap the only blade I had. What the heck, that's why they come in packs of ten, but I can't get a pack until Monday. Oh, and the shed: 6x4 foot "lap" shed from B&Q;, bought as a kit because I couldn't buy the raw materials anywhere near as cheaply. Basically, I got what I paid for - I spent as much time fixing the manufacturing faults as I did building it. There are three fixes visible in the shot below, plus three fixes inside, not to mention the six or seven places where you can see daylight through the timber, and the very flexible window that will probably get sucked out by the first storm of winter... If you need a shed, and can only afford £135, then save up for something better.

We need a new button on instructables pages...a printer friendly button! Like you see on other sites, you would click it and it would give you a nice, cleaned up, ads and image free, printer friendly version of the 'ible. What do you think?EDIT:aHA! I found it! But Canida is right, it dosen't turn out perfect. And, IMO, it needs to be way more prominent. It was like where's Waldo or something!:D

I think at this point in time of my life, ive lost my ability to create well designed weapons with knex. But Ive always been fascinated by the ball machines, and I would like to pursue further into my knex hobby to make them. But my skill when it comes to this is at rock bottom. I have no experience, and no concept on how to design anything for these. I also need to buy more parts to get started on it and be able to finish it without worrying about missing some parts. I havent gone anywhere guys, just had some time off since I couldnt make anything good. I miss all of you guys, and hopefully, I can get something going and youll see more from me :) -SW-

We've just released a new version of the site with some noticable changes. The biggest are:new header layout with customization optionsWe moved the main menu items up nearer the top to make room for the category exploration tabs in the light orange bar. In the top right, for logged-in members, you'll see a CUSTOMIZE link. Behind that lies the ability to select up to five of your personal favorite links to create your own shortcut menu.Get notified of your favorite members' activityOn member pages, and on the author info boxes, you'll see a SUBSCRIBE button. Clicking that marks that member as someone you're interested in, and any time they publish or update something, you'll get an email. You can configure how often you get these emails in your You pages - choose Email Alerts. And change your subscriptions there too - choose Subscriptions. You'll be able to figure these out pretty easily so I won't go into too much detail. There are a couple smaller things too that I'll let you work out on your own.Got bugs? Let us know .

It's been a toughweek for me, people. School started a week ago and something strange happened. Friends have been abandoning me one by one, and everyone acted soulless in front of me. It seemed like everyone was unhappy with somehing. Then i started to realize that everyone was unhappy with me. This morning, i received messages from my friends saying why they hate me. Apparently i was an arrogant little ****. My friends were trying to deal with my arrogance for too long, and they couldn't take it anymore. I then logged on to instructables, yet having more controversy on my 'ibles. If you want to know why i am arrogant, I was considered to be a 'perfect kid'. I have a 3.8 gpa in high school now, and i am taking 4 AP classes, and one honors. I also made varsity tennis and JV basketball in freshman year, so i was considered good at sports (not bragging). I also won 3 karate sparring tournaments, which raised my self confidence even more higher, to the point where i almost became a kanye west duplicate. I was incredibly egotistical and happy with my self, because i was good at almost everything. I felt as though i was on top of everyone else, and i have always tried to maintain that position. But that happiness vanished during this week. Even in my first couple of 'ibles, i was overhappy and arrogant, and i used to demand respect and recognition. But i later realized that this wasn't right. I have made my mistakes of being an arrogant D-bag, and i am introducing the new me: a still happy person who doesn't cross the line towards arrogance. - IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Everyone has done bad things and made mistakes. If you haven't done bad things, you are a liar. Ask yourself this: How many times have you cheated on anything? Did you steal from anyone (even something worth a penny)? How many times have you lied to anyone? How many times have you broken the rules of your household, school, or anywhere else? There are many questions i can ask, but i will stop right here. We all make mistakes, but you are a good person as long as you LEARN from your mistake. I have learned from my bad things i have done in the past. I will be more mature and still maintain above a 3.8 gpa and still do my sports, but i will change my attitude and i won't be so arrogant and immature. This is a new me.

I know the staff, and some members, are tired of hearing criticism of the recent changes the site has undergone. Some is probably valid, most is just knee jerk. I don't want to pile on, more than I already have, but after seeing the homepage today I have to say something. I've attached a screen shot of the current home page full screened on a 23" monitor. Lets say I'm visiting Instructables for the first time. Is a giant, scaling, Radio Shack advert really the only thing you want to show up? (Since the ad scales with the window yo would need a huge screen to be able to see anything else on landing, also if you aren't full screen it is literally all you see besides the header.) Sure there are a links to the categories but what if I'm new and don't know those are the categories or what they mean. What if I'm a regular but don't know what category the thing I'm looking for is in? Search you say, just use the search bar. Right, ok, just as soon as I find it. Oh you mean this giant thing in the middle of my screen that typed out like it's a non-usable flash animation when I first landed? What if I don't know what I'm looking for, lets call it browsing. Looks like there are some featured projects down below. *scrolls down* One project with a picture large enough to discern it's subject, three with shrunken down thumbnails, and 8 more in a wall of text with no pictures to give any context to the titles. This home screen is no longer a hub for the site. It's 50% add, 25% blank space, and 25% links to specific things. With the giant ad filling the entire screen the stuff below feels like it is tacked on as an afterthought. It really feels like it was designed around the ad. You have to know what you are looking for for it to even be remotely useful. Over 3/4 of the time if I'm am looking at a project on Instructables I found it by browsing ALL the categories, at once, on the old homepage. Unless I'm looking for something specific I'm not going to spend the time to click through every catagory just to see what's up. I have broad interests and jumping to 6 different pages just isn't going to cut it. It also makes it feel very disjointed. You go from a page with almost no content to a page filtered down to 1/6th of the sites content, at most. This isn't just bad for people browsing either, this will directly impact authors as well. With only one decent sized picture and only 4 pictures total what are the chances your project is going to make the front page? Average case I would assume people might click through half of the six categories in the current format. Right there that's a probable 50% drop in eyes even seeing your project, click through rates will decrease that number further but those could actually rise (as a percentage of the total people that see the project. This doesn't cancel out the first decrease though). A 66% decrease is also plausible and of course roughly 83% is worst case. If the browser doesn't win and the author doesn't win then who wins? Unless Radio Shack has paid for all the space on the top of the home screen, in which case the Autodesk balance sheet wins, nobody does. It causes me some concern that the reasoning given for the major format changes to the Instructables themselves was to really emphasize the pictures, and I believe the same ting was said about the previous homepage update, but now pictures of projects have almost entirely been removed. The motivation here is fuzzy at best. I would love to hear from someone on that staff that knows the actual reason behind the change. If it makes sense I'm willing to listen and adapt my usage habits but if this is simply a numbers game in the ledger book then this probably signals the end of me browsing other peoples projects. (Unless a staff member will actually come out and say it's a money grab in which case I appreciate the honesty and maybe we can all work together to find a way to generate more income. The last thing we want is Instructables to go under.) EDIT: Interestingly it's not as bad in IE8 (The ad that is. The lack of projects is still quite apparent) but there is a little issue with the scaling of the "search bar". Maybe the ad size is a bug, as there is at least one other FF bug already spotted, see below. Also the image comment system seems to have reverted to the old style click and drag, at least here in the forum. Maybe it nerev changed, I don't post photos here much.

Here's an awesome outreach project from artist Aaron Rose and Kanye West where artists encourage kids to make stuff. The program has started in New York City where over 1,500 kids have already gone to workshops. A studio will be opening in Los Angeles later in the year. This looks pretty awesome and the artist line-up is sweet, including Barry McGee, Spike Jonze, KAWS, Kanye West, Chloe Sevigny, Jeremy Scott, and Terry Richardson. As Kanye says:"I believe every child is born an artist. That ability to express ourselves freely is inherent in every child, whether it's through singing, dancing, drawing or playing. Somehow as we get older society and culture dampen that spirit, making us self conscious about expression. I believe Programs like Make Something!! help to keep this creative spirit alive as well as show kids that being an artist is a viable career path. As public funding for schools and arts programs continue to be cut, programs like Make Something!! are critical to breeding future generations of artists who can contribute to the greater cultural fabric that keeps America forward thinking and progressive." So I finally got a Leatherman Wave after finding a good price at a sports store for $55 (Wave+Croc+bit extension) but it isn't quite what I expected. I've never had a Leatherman before or a large multitool (Wave replaced a Gerber Dime), so maybe this is normal, but it is really stiff to fold at the pivot points. Some people say that it just needs to be opened and closed a lot to loosen it but I would like some advice. I haven't oiled it yet but I'm not sure what kind of oil to use. The tools and knives are ok, they don't require much force, but I am surprised by the folding action. Is the folding action supposed to go different ways? From the pictures I included, sometimes it goes to the right and sometimes to the left.

What do you think of the new weekend projects with kipkay at MAKE? I personally really don't like them. Coming home on a friday to relax, watch a new project that starts turning the gears in your head to create something really imaginative. Now I come home to a droll (yet clear) voice that you don't even want to sit through the whole project. I do not get the creative inspiration from the new ones as from the bre ones. everything bre made had potential for creative add ons. Mousey the junkbot, that is so cool and easily branch off of. Beam bots, inspiring for creative electronics? Theremin, intro to a cool instrucment, that goes for the mellophone too etc.etc.etc I don't need a video to make something look uglier, bigger, fatter, less portable that sucks hours out of my free time. Cutting a book to put something in it. On the popular video areas bre did it, but made it imaginative kipkay did it, but sexy in the front, I mean come on Kipkay did it AGAIN except for taking off of the cases of electronics, taking out connectors and hard wiring everything instead, where's the imagination! I mean I could see if you made it better than before, but come on!!! anyone's thoughts?

But I'm pretty sure this is new: custom matchbox cars. The ones below are a few examples. You can spray paint them and then do touch-ups with acrylics. For more advanced modders, you could try to integrate shocks and stuff. I will post an instructable on this if you want.I think that modding is a necessary part of instructables and we always need more ideas.

I thought about a hybrid but they are like 6 grand more expensive and the advantage of MPG doesn't really justify the cost. I figure i can spend under 20,000. but i only make about 1 grand a month (take home) but i dont know how much insurance is going to be (probably expensive because im under 25) Or should i get one of them "pre-loved" cars at the dealer. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. (i thought about getting a bike but its not really a family friendly vehicle.

Hi Your new Home page for Instructables is dreadful. You've lost the easy overview, fast navigation, pictorial overview and replaced it with a flashy meaningless image that wipes out your valuable home page real estate. I think Autodesk don't understand where makers and builders are coming from. I have to admit I was kinda waiting for something like this post buy-out. I need to remake the rear bench seat for my boat. The old one is about 100lbs and I would like something a little lighter. I can make a new frame with aluminum, but I am stuck with what to replace the cushions with. Whatever foam they are using is super heavy as well. Is there some way to remake the seat with styrofoam beads beads or something and still maintain form? I considered making a cheap gel seat using a thinned out mixture of silicone, but that wouldn't be any lighter than the original bench and would likely be heavier, actually. I think foam beads would work pretty slick.

So it's been awhile! Between school, homework, work, and playing with gadgets and such, I haven't gotten the time to post or make an instructable for quite a long time. But now, I'm back with a question. I see lots of new users here, and to them I say welcome to the community! You are going to love it here, everyone is helpful, and you'll find answers to just about everything. I also see some members here that were around when I still used instructables. Remember me? How are things? :P Ok, so now for my question. A few weeks ago, after flushing the Toilet, a strange noise began behind our refrigerator. It was king of like a rattling, but not so much that as say, a prize wheel at a gameshow spinning and hitting something heavy. It's really quite odd. The refrigerator is a model with the built in water and ice dispenser. I googled it, and many seem to say it is something called "Pipe Rattling", but I don't think that is what it is, because it only started a couple of weeks ago and we have had this fridge for a year. I have drawn a diagram of the first floor of our house to help you get a better understanding of where the fridge is in comparison to the bathroom and the toilet. Like I said before, the noise only occurs after we flush the 1st floor toilet. Another odd thing about it is when the noise occurs. It can make this rattling as the toilet is flushing, directly after the toilet has flushed, and it has happened up to a minute after the toilet is finished flushing and refilling the bowl. The noise goes for about 5-8 seconds each time, and it only sounds once after each flush. We have not made any additions to the house before or since it started, have npt experienced any severe weather, and have not modified any plumbing in the house in quite a while, and never in that area of the house. In the incredibly bad sketch I made, you can see the bathroom, and the incredibly bad drawing of a toilet. The fridge is indented in the wall so there are cabinets surrounding it. Any thoughts on what this noise can be?

Hello everyone, I'm a sophomore in Electrical Engineering and I have only really taken one EE class so far. We used a breadboard to do some very basic logic circuits, but nothing past that really. We also did some work on MultiSim, but that was about the extent of our lab work. I've been viewing this site regularly for quite a while now, but I haven't been able to do many of the projects because I felt like I didn't really have any experience. I'm at the point now where I feel like I should just jump in and start learning, but I'm not sure what tools I need to start out. It seems like every instructable has tools such as soldering irons, solder, wire cutters/strippers, and other tools required. Can anyone let me know what is a base set of tools I need to do some of the basic electronics projects on this site? I'm talking about simple LED projects or anything for a beginner really. Would it be beneficial to buy a bread board of some type to practice wiring? I've seen kits in places like Radio Shack that came with a bread board and other items that said it had something like 100 projects or something like that. Would that be something good to start with, or would it be a waste? So if anyone could provide some links for basic tools needed, I would appreciate it.

Hi Everyone! We want to come up some really creative ways to use TINE, and we thought that instructables community might be a good place to get some help. TINE is is what you would get if you combined a post it note with YouTube. We've created these little stickers called TINE tags that you can stick on anything and then use the TINE app to record a video or audio message onto the sticker. When someone scans your sticker, they'll see your message and you'll get notified. You can learn more at tinetag.com. It's totally free and our goal was to create something new and different that people could use in a lot of creative ways. We would love to hear how you would use TINE. We recently created a DIY on how to use TINE to make any book a recoradable audio book, but we know there are tons of other ideas out there. Let us know if you have an amazing idea for TINE and we will make a DIY for it. Thanks, Vik from TINE

From the MAKE blog, I found an outstanding article in The Economist on product development in the age of rapid prototyping. In their usual fashion, The Economist gets into the nuts and bolts of how a pair of entrepreneurs used rapid prototyping and Kickstarter to create a real product from their initial ideas. It's a great case study for DIY-ers who think they have something marketable, to show how they could make that happen.

Don't come showing me pictures of models, I'm talking about real innovation like bolt action, lever action and/or semi auto's with a potential range over 30 feet. Next, I got an idea. What if we stop focussing on making models, replicating them as best as we can with the limited forms of k'nex pieces? We could focus on real innovation, the world needs about a 100 more Oblivitus and Kinetic's. Just check it out. Even though most have given up hopes, there are still loads of ideas to improve, perform or make. Take a look at thedunkis' forum topics, Oblivitus' concepts I'ble and Kinetic's mechs. For example, I'm now working on a bullpup, bolt action, horizontal magazine gun. Concepts are far more challenging than replicas. Just try it out for yourself. Another thing, the veterans left. So stop making a 1001 forum topics about where everybody is, they have left. Mepain, DJRadio, Oodalumps, Zak, Shadowninja31, Coolbas, Killer-safecracker, IamCanadian, KILLERK. They all left. stop complaining, instead of whining, go out there and design something new! The red book of westmarch, Senior waffleman, Drrichtofen and all the awesome new(er) guys. You are the future of K'nex guns! Yours sincerely, Knex.X

Hi everyone. My parents recently bought a new house and it turns out one of the rooms has no lamp connections whatsoever(Everything is ok, there just isn't any wires for the light bulbs).Because of multiple reasons we can't call an expert over so the job falls on me.I have experience in electronics but I'm afraid to try adding a route like the one that should be there so I'm searching for something safer :).All ideas are welcome :)
