How to improve my public speaking and interviewing skills? Answered

Much to my surprise I've been doing a fair number of media interviews lately. (TV, radio, podcast)  I'm not really happy with the way that I sound.  I either sound a bit scatterbrained or uncertain.  I meander, give run-on sentences, finish different sentences than I start, etc.  This happens even if I get the questions in advance. Usually the interviews are taped and the editors work hard to make me sound coherent, but even then my speech is full of pauses, "um"s and "ah"s.  I'd like to break myself of the habit.  So any hints, tips, ways to practice and/or relax more?

I want to pursue this circuit bending project, so (going off another schematic), I bought a Speak and Math off of Ebay. What would happen if I put the Speak and Spell cartridge in the Speak and Math?

Anybody speak Scots Gaelic??

I got this book from my aunt who teaches gaelic in cape breton, its called Everyday Gaelic by Morag Macneill, and im trying to learn it because i think my dad said hes taking my siblings and i to cape breton next year for a huge ass family reunion. The book i have teaches the basic grammar and punctuation and pronunciation, but lacks words. theres phrases, but nothing enough to keep a conversation going, just stuff that you would use if you were to be in a gaelic speaking community and needed to ask where the washroom is and stuff like that. So, (im approaching the main question now =P), i was wondering if anybody speaks fluent scots gaelic and if you do, could you maybe help me out on learning it. You can contact me at and id really appreciate any help from someone who understands the language. Thanks !! =]

I'm speaking in Westminster Abbey...

Well I've just heard that I'm one of 20 young people in the whole of the Uk going to westminster to speak and be consulted about child services and bereavement, on 6th of may I go over to speak, damn this is cool I will have a say in something... Out of the group that was asked for candidates four of us were chosen from our recent video project work, I was selected because I apparently have good ideas and am skilled at arguing points and expressing my self sensibly... Woot skills...The whole thing is about improving child services around the UK and I've got to say it's about time... There are very few decent social workers and the system is pretty bad on the whole, minimizing the effect of decent social workers and the like, counsellors are soon going to be boning up on dealing with bereaved kids due to our video project along with teachers and if the funding goes through we may be doing another on helping friends or ourselves... Any suggestions from the UK people here in following withA friend in need is a friend indeed Coping with it?

Is this a good pcb design practically speaking? Answered

I designed this PCB in Diptrace and now i am going to etch it at home. This is my first PCB design. Can someone please tell me if this is a good and practical design? This is a design of a water level indicator based on a single NOT gate IC (HEF 4049). UPDATE: I redid the layout. Increased the trace width and attached the power to the IC. Please tell me if this is ok? Also please tell me is it must to have a power plane? UPDATE: 1) i went back to original layout and beefed up the tracks 2) Made the IC pads bigger. 3) Was able to reconfigure the layout to connect power without jumpers (this took up most of the time). 4) Did as Verence suggested and put text on the copper layer. Version number, date and name. 5) And finally added the positive for the supply voltage. UPDATE: Moved track from pin 7 of IC away from pin 8.

MP3 + Speak alternative power supply???

I have posted this this in 'Kids' forum also, I hope that is ok? MP3 Bedtime Stories ..... Battery  Hi, new here so please bare with me.....long story cut short. My Grandson is five years old and I thought it would be great, and get him to sleep quicker at night, if I could come up with some method of playing MP3 stories. I know, CD player, etc. nope, at five years old they want to take EVERYTHING apart. So no mains leads, CDs, etc. What I came up with was buy a simple and cheap (£2.99) MP3 player off ebay, pair it with a small battery powered speaker (£5.99) and away we go.....doh!   Both items are amazing and just right for the job BUT both are battery powered (will go flat after he falls asleep and they are left on) and two, they both have on-off switches underneath which stops me mounting them on a surface. Sorry this is going on so long....... What I thought of doing is getting a loooooooong lasting battery source (would 9v last a lot longer) and bringing ing it down to 1.5v (x2 one feed for each device). Then it wouldn't matter if they were left on overnight a few times -  or am I deluded.  Or better still, can anybody please advise? Both the speaker and MP3 player have internal rechargeable batteries but they rely on a VERY busy mum recharging them daily so I am looking for an alternative. thanks

"speaking piano" reciting the Proclamation of the European Environmental Criminal Court

A "speaking piano" reciting the Proclamation of the European Environmental Criminal Court at World Venice Forum 2009. Austrian composer Peter Ablinger transferred the frequency spectrom of the childs voice to his computer controlled mechanical piano. (translated from German) Peter Ablinger: I break down this phonography, meaning a recording of something the voice, in this case -, in individual pixels, one can say. And if I have the possibility of a rendering in a fairly high resolution (and that I only get with a mechanical piano), then I in fact restore some kind of continuity. Therefore, with a little practice, or help or subtitling, we actually can hear a human voice in a piano sound. link: youtube

Translate your instructables to Spanish!

Hi I am new to instructables, and while I currently do not have a instructable posted (maybe soon) I noticed there are not many instructables in Spanish. I think i saw maybe one at best. There are many Spanish speaking people who do not speak English in the United States (and indeed the world over) who could benefit greatly from the wealth of information provided by this wonderful website. I speak and write fluent English and Spanish. (I also speak Swedish but I am not very good at writing it.) To get the ball rolling I am offering  translation of any instructable on this site. Just send me a message and I will start doing what I do. By translating your post you will be appealing to a much wider audience, and probably get more votes! Who doesn't want that?

Hispanic or Latino?

I cringe everytime someone uses the word Latino when generically speaking of Spanish-speaking people. I prefer to be called Spanish or Hispanic. Some people may disagree with me but I think that calling me a Hispanic describes my true ethnical and cultural origin. Although many people will bring the fact that the colonization of America by the Spanish conquerors was bloody and opressive, we still owe to Spain the origin of our countries. From Mexico to Patagonia and the Large Antilles, the Spanish conquistadores left their footprint in the form of language, architecture, religion, cooking, stories, art, crafts and culture. In contrast, a Latino is anyone who descends from people that speak a Romance language like: French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Romanian. By that definition, when we speak of Latin America we include countries like Brasil, Haiti, French Guyana and, Surinam. The same definition could apply to Italian-Americans, French-Americans, French-Canadians, and Cajun people.

Determining speech rate from audio

Hi, my name's Oli and I am a speech therapist - aka speech pathologist in US. I am looking for a way (e.g. an app) that can determine how fast someone is speaking, in realtime. This kind of biofeedback would be really useful for many people with communication disorders where learning to speak slower can help a lot (e.g. stuttering, dysarthria). I can also see it being useful for teaching public speaking to students etc.  Does anyone know of anything out there (hardware or app) that can do this? Or where I might find someone I could pay to develop this app?  Many thanks, Oli
