USB Hub Spider

Here's a variation on my USB Hub Monster that I'm working on. I've added a couple of legs that have alligator clips on it to get to the full eight legs for true spidery creepiness. The legs are nearly done, but the body is practically untouched. Expect to see some glowing red eyes when it's done. There's another USB creature I'm working on right now as well, but it's a little shy.

Do some spiders leave a scent trail ? Answered

I didn't think so but a colleague told me of his recent experience; He was in the living room watching TV and a huge spider came in along the floor. He is scared of spiders and sat there transfixed. He said it was the biggest spider that  he had ever seen.  He and his partner squashed it, ( stupid humans), and threw it in the bin. The next day he was in the same place and a big, (but not as big ), spider came along and did the exact same route through the room. He said that it was a very unusual route to take but he knew that it was identical because he had studied both of them with absolute fear-based attention. So apart from making him feel guilty about killing the first one he wondered if spiders leave a scent. I can't find any answer on google so I'm asking anyone who may have knowledge of spiders? Thank you. I can't seem to find a suitable channel so I've chosen camping in the hope that some outdoor type will know.

Help me identify this spider?

OK so, tonight I was getting out of the shower when I saw what looked like a little bit of red string dangling in the air. I inspected closer and found out it was some kind of spider! It kinda just dangled there on what seemed like one thread of web from the ceiling about 1-2 feet from the floor. After blowing on it to conjure some sort of reaction, nothing happened. It just slowly swung without moving. So seeing as it was dead, I grabbed the stand of web a small distance ahead of it and dropped it into the sink. As soon as it touched the sink, it sprang to life being the sissy I am I filled the sink with water and let it be sucked into its watery grave. Here's my description, I'll post pics tomorrow. It was a deep red color, I'd say almost burgundy. I found it in my bathroom in Phoenix, Arizona As for it's size, I'd say it was relatively small, maybe the size of a nickel at the largest. Remembering back from learning about insects in fourth grade, because it was a reddish color I deducted it could be venomous, but I doubt it.

Is this a spider bite, or something else I should worry aboutt?

I just came across this... thing.. a couple days ago on my thigh. Is it a spider bite? I live in colorado, but not in the mountains. It does not hurt, it only itches. It is not an open wound, it is the texture of very dry itchy skin. The middle of it is white, and it is surrounded by red. Is it something else? I need help. Sorry if the pictures are bad, it isnt easy to take a picture of something on the back of your thigh. -freeza36

Web Collaboration, of Sorts

No, not the World Wide Web--colonies of spiders that build giant communal webs to catch their prey. However, there is an interesting twist: spiders maximize their food supply per spider if the colony includes 500 spiders; more than that, and each spider gets less.As the number of occupants grows, the volume of the webs they construct increases - but the surface-area-to-volume ratio declines. The area of web is the all-important determinant of numbers of prey caught, so bigger colonies catch proportionally fewer prey items.Reminds me of Dunbar's Number, the theory that says that groups of larger than approximately 150 people are no longer optimal because humans cannot effectively have and maintain that many social relationships.Spider Webs Article

Spider Man Web Slingers Idea

This is the first idea that I have worked up the courage to post and I would like some help getting my ducks in a row. I don't have anything written down yet so here is a verbal breakdown of its function: A retractable tape measure mechanism is attached to a length of cord. This mechanism is, in turn, placed in a sealed chamber with a barrel wide enough to accommodate smooth movement of the cord. The free end of the chord is attached to a dart/wadding that is used to block the chamber from the outside. Pressurized CO2 or equivalent gas is pumped into the chamber using a pressure nozzle with a emergency release valve. CO2 is pumped into the chamber, dart/wadding is fired, dart/wadding and cord pass through the barrel till loss of velocity or reaching the end of the chord, the mechanism pulls the cord and dart/wadding back to start and the process repeats. this is just an idea and I would like some help getting it functional, and an equation for thrust vs drag would be nice :D

Giant Spider WALKS in Liverpool - update

In May 2006 something incredible happened in London. For four days the city stopped in its tracks and marvelled at the sight of a gigantic wooden elephant, and a little-girl giant in a green dress. Hundreds of thousands of people jammed the streets, astonished at the scale and beauty of the spectacular Sultan's Elephant. Now Artichoke, the company that brought that event to London, is working with the engineering genius behind Royal de Luxe's giants, François Delarozière, and his company La Machine, to create a magical and astonishing new show especially for Liverpool, European Capital of Culture 2008. Does anyone know what kind of bug/spider this is??!?? Answered

I just happened to be on floor with my ear against my sub as I'm testing something out, but then I looked at the carpet and saw this dead bug sitting there! My gf has been getting bit in her sleep, well not recently within the last week, but she has like 6-7 bites along her wrist that are weeks old now and they are not healing up worth a damn. I don't think it's a bed bug, we stayed at a friend's house a long time ago and didn't realize they had a bedbug problem, neither did they, needless to say my gf's skin is scarred all over from bedbug bites. Now we're back at my parents and I did the necessary precautions to make sure we didn't bring any with us, including I kept all her clothes and whatnot in a duffel bag outside in the shed for over a week, if it didn't kill them it at least slowed them down, then I brought it in and washed ALL of her clothes with a hot wash in the washing machine. Anyways this looks like a spider to me, and thats what she thinks was biting her because they don't look like bedbug bites, but it pisses me off really, I even sprayed all sorts of "Spider-bahn" around my room and around the perimeter of the walls, perhaps that's why I found this one dead?? Anyone help please! P.S: I live in Canada, and I've heard from a couple people that this year is really bad for bedbugs, at least up here.

Tarantula Defends Territory Against Owner; Owner Almost Blinded

Got a pet tarantula? Better protect your eyes ----------------------- WASHINGTON Fri Jan 1, 2010 10:53am EST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Here's some advice stemming from the unusual case of a man who had spider hairs stuck in his cornea: Be sure to cover your eyes when hanging around with your pet tarantula. Ophthalmologists at St. James's University Hospital in Leeds, England, used high magnification lenses to find out what made the man's eye red, watery and light-sensitive, according to a study reported in the British medical journal The Lancet on Thursday. They discovered hair-like projections stuck in the man's cornea. It was a light bulb moment for the patient, who remembered that three weeks earlier he had been cleaning a stubborn stain on the glass tank of his pet, a Chilean Rose tarantula. "He sensed movement in the terrarium. He turned his head and found that the tarantula, which was in close proximity, had released 'a mist of hairs' which hit his eyes and face," the doctors wrote. They said the man's condition was rare. The authors noted that the Chilean Rose tarantula releases the barbed hair on the back of its body to defend against predators. "We suggest that tarantula keepers be advised to routinely wear eye protection when handling these animals," the doctors said.   ----------------------- Ok, so he might not have been blinded, but in theory, he could have developed a horrible infection that could have blinded him.  I'm listing tarantulas next to porcupines as pets to not own. K'nex Spider-man Web-Shooter

I made a k'nex Gun that does not require the power of a spring or rubberband; It's made purely out of k'nex. I didn't really know what to call it, but I got the idea after I noticed that when holding it, it looks like you're shooting webs like Spider-man. I got the idea when I was watching a History Channel program about historical assassinations, and a famous gun that was examined was a gun that shoots when you make a hand-shaking gesture. The k'nex gun shoots about 30 feet. It also has an auto-ejecting shell, but it's single shot. You also have to load the bullet in cartridges. Baed on the definition, do you Instructablers think that this would be a worthy Instructable, or should it stay as a forum? P.S. I'll have pictures of it up soon.

A New Age of Politics

As technology evolves, the world of politics has followed suit. The integration of the Internet with the elections--as represented by the attempt at YouTube Debates--has drastically changed the workings of the political cycle. There's a new development: using internet spiders (related Instructable here), people have started to track changes on candidates' websites to see how their views are shifting and to try to show flip-flopping (named after, but not as much fun as, flip-flops). Regardless of your political leanings, this will definitely force all candidates to be more careful not only with what they say, but what they write as well.Wired

How do I get rid of spiders in my home?? I'm terribly afraid of them? Answered

I live in a mobile home. At this time of year insects thrive. Unfortunately, I'm terrified of most insects, especially spiders. Lately, I've found spiders on the kitchen cabinets and counters. Any suggestions on how to repel them from being in my home?? I hate to use insecticides, but will if I have to. I prefer a more natural type of repelling them. Thank you. Linda D.

Someone with skills in servos, robotics and similar.

I'm on the search again after a little break to see if I'll be able to find someone who could help me out. I'm looking for anyone will the knowledge in robotics, mechanics/Arduinos/Servos/Animatronics for a project I am putting together; a spider creature mask. It would have functioning parts (i.e. eyes, mouth and more) and I unfortunately lack the skills to do this part myself. If you are or know of anyone capable of doing this sort of thing do let me know so I can discuss this further with them. It doesn't have to be started immediately I'm just looking for anyone willing to give it a go when they are available. I'm located in Sacramento California. Much appreciated, thanks for looking.

How to catch animal expect bugs, spiders and frogs with 100% success?

Hi, i living in Bosnia and Herzegowina in Southeast Europe (probably you heared for that country if you are living in USA, Barrack Obama loves us!). I live in city usually (not my house), but on holidays in my village (something like mountain). I readed a lot off books at home about animals, and i love animals. I like to watch them, play with them, take photo of them...) and because i am living in village with my old parents both more than 60 years :P and my brother I cant play with anyone expect animals. My brother is lazy and just plays some games like CS and Tetris on laptop and doesn't like experiments and animals. I am 16 years old. I have seen lot off animals in my mini forest at my property and at forest near my property lot off animals like: birds, bats, frogs, bugs and i rarely i have seen: rabbit, wolf, wild pig, squirrel... So how to attract and catch any animal easy with 100% success without buying any trap expect buying something really cheap under 3$ or using something found in forest? (BUT SOMETHING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE SO THAT MY FATHER WONT RECOGNIZE TRAP, I WANT TO CATCH ANY ANIMAL EXPECT BUGS, SPIDERS, FROGS).AT LEAST A BIRD EVEN IN WINTER HOW TO CATCH? I DONT WANT THE TRAP SEEN BY MY FATHER NOT BIGGER THAN BALL. I WILL NOT HURT BIRDS BUT JUST WANT TO PICTURE WITH THEM AND I WILL RLEASE IT AFTER SOME PLAYING AND TAKING A PICTURE. SO IF YOU DONT KNOW ANSWER DONT SAY ANY COMPLIMENTS!!! I DONT HAVE PLANT FOR MAKING BIRD LIME AND I THINK MOUSE TRAP IS TOO EXPENSIVE!

Gift Exchange: Zombie Love Print

My skills include: Screen Printing and breaking things. Here's a link to my featured Instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/Puppet-theater-from-broken-monitor/ What I'd like to make for someone: I'm currently working on a multiple color print of the cover of one of my favorite books, Breathers: A Zombies Lament as a gift to my soon to be wife!!  :)  I will have an extra one when I'm done. (Picture below) I'd be willing to make this size gift package for someone (choose all that apply): Medium, the poster print will be about 16 x 20 inches. It will come in a black wood poster frame. I'd be willing to receive a smaller or larger size gift package from someone than the one I make for someone else: Same size would be awesome. What I like: Anything unique or odd, I enjoy a lot of steampunk or old fashioned looking items. What I don't like: Spiders I absolutely can't have: (due to allergies, pets, etc) Spiders with wings (I fear that some spider will rapidly evolve, and sprout wings just to torture me) Type of thing I'd love to receive: Anything original, and awesome!! Would you be willing to ship to an address outside your own country? No, only because I just lost my job and I don't know if I'd be able to make the shipping cost. (If some one from outside the US wants it I will gladly send it if they cover the shipping charge.) Confirm that are at least 18 years old or, if not, that you have the approval of a parent or guardian: Yes (In fact my birthday is next week, the big 25!!)

Ring Contest Question

I have a question regarding the ring contest. Did you have to actually make the ring or could you have designed it, planned out what went into it, created a mold model, and had a jeweler create the finished product from your design? I designed my wife's engagement ring with drawings and even a wax model but did not have the proper tools or materials to actually make it so a local jeweler put my design into reality and I critiqued it until it was exactly as I wanted. Does that count for this contest?

Storing Elastic Cargo Nets?

Anyone know a way to store those elastic cargo nets that look like a spider web made out of bungee cords? The net always gets twisted around & through itself and the hooks do their best to make sure it stays that way! The best way I've come up with so far is to stretch it out on an old towel, piece of tarp or something similar that's about the same size as the net and then roll them up together like a giant Taquito. But that's pretty bulky, especially if you have several. Better ideas?
