For Star

I want to do something for star...as you know, she was arrested for having a "fake bomb" hoodie. Read more here. The problem is that we all live so far apart, we can't have any sort of protest, like was had for the tazed kid at UF. I'm trying to think of things we could do to show our support that doesn't require mass gatherings. So one idea that came to mind was having the front be a picture like what she had on hers, and on the back, some kind of a message. Do you like that idea? Do you have any others? Just like..discuss, and we can try and find the best thing to do. If we do decide to make shirts (iron on paper) maybe we could all wear them monday, or something?

By toothbrush to the stars!

A concept known as a space elevator has been "doing the rounds" as a cheap way into orbital space for several decades now.Basically, a cable of some description is anchored to an orbiting mass, and vehicles climb up and down the cable to transport materials and passengers to and from orbital space cheaply and easily (in any space journey, the most expensive and dangerous parts of the journey are the first and last few kilometres). There are, technologically speaking, two main hurdles - the cable, and the vehicles.Carbon nanotube composites are a strong contender for the cable, but travelling up and down the cable takes power. Rockets are out of the question (what would be the point of the cable?). The hours, possibly days, of the journey make batteries unfeasible, and the turbulence of the atmosphere precludes the use of PV panels large enough to power the vehicles from daylight. That leaves transmitted power. So far, the transmission ideas have been electromagnetic - lasers aimed at smaller PV panels on the underside of the vehicles, or microwaves aimed at receiver dishes. Now, a new proposal suggests transmitting the energy mechanically.European Space Agency ground station engineer Dr Riise ... proposed sending power mechanically - effectively by providing a carefully timed jerk of the cable at its base.To demonstrate, he employed a broomstick to represent the cable held in tension, and an electric sander to provide a rhythmic vibration to the bottom of the stick.Around the broomstick's circumference he tied three brushes representing the climber with their bristles pointing downwards - meaning it took slightly more force to lower the brush assembly than to raise it.The vibration from the sander allowed the assembly to slide upward along the broomstick as it moved slightly downward, but grip it as it moved slightly upward. The net effect: the assembly rose against gravity straight to the top of the stick. That's a bristlebot (or vibrobot)! Dr Riise, though, calls it a longitudinal wave climber or LWC.It sounds easy enough to replicate the demonstration model, although I can't imagine how you would efficiently vibrate a 36,000km cable (I have images of damaging harmonics getting set up as the moving carriages change the effective length of the vibrating part of the cable, and shaking important bits off the vehicles).Apparently, though, the idea is being looked at by lift manufacturers for installation in the next generation of super skyscrapers.Demonstration videoBBC story

The Star Trek Home

There's the technology today to produce most of the comedies seen in star trek, not just the original series. I'm talking the TNG or DS9. The automatic sliding doors are seen in almost every supermarket. You would install them with steel or aluminum doors with the design seen on the shows. Come badges could be produced. The only problem would be wearing a cellphone sized device somewhere on your body. The hypo spray could be developed with our technology, we use syringes more often. The technology in hyposprays was used in mass vachination machines. I'm sure it could be miniaturized. Isolinear chips compare to memory sicks or SD cards of today. One could install touchscreen monitors throughout one's house linked to a central computer. Microphones and speaker hidden throughout the house could provide the voice access like seen in star trek. Al though you might want to upgrade their authorization code method. It's horribly insecure. A PADD could be a tablet pc or kindle. It uses induction charging, something that could be incorporated or built in using today's technology. The "laptop" used in readyrooms could be a laptop. The facebook video message system shows how the star trek messages could be transferred. Skype could be used as transmissions. A giant monitor could serve as a view screen. A replicator is hard to do with today's technology, but we have machines that can produce drinks. We don't have phasers, but current day guns are as good as them in stopping power, and they can't be damped by damping fields. Torpedoes in Star Trek  are just like air to air missiles in the sky or normal torpedoes in the sea. Jefferies tubes could be installed in one's home if you wanted it to.  Next are somethings that aren't as good as the ones in star trek. Our medical technology isn't as advanced. Tricorders could be iphones modified a bit with radar and other technology. They wouldn't be the same quality as the ones in star trek.  A holodeck could be simulated with virtual reality machines, movie theater, video games, and a 3-d holographic projector. They would be most of the uses a holodeck is used for. There are somethings we don't have that is seen frequently in star trek. Transporters and Warp Drive are chief among them. In some ways though, we have surpassed the technology seen in star trek. Touchscreens are a prime example. Instead of the unchangeable interfaces we see in the bridge, we could put touch screens in all of the consoles.

Ratings Stars not appearing

I have discovered that while viewing Instructables, I cannot rate them because no stars appear in the box to the right. I see the current rating and number of views but no stars. I did discover that by passing my cursor above the rating that the value of the stars appears to the right of the current rating in blue. I am able now to rate the Instructable. However, it begs the question: if this bug is keeping many people from rating projects since they do not see the stars.

Another Star Wars?!

When I entered the lobby of our movie theater after watching the funny (yet disgusting at times) Zohan movie, I caught a glimpse of this trailer. At first, I thought it was a cartoony parody of starwars (perhaps a joke in that Panda movie, all I saw was Yoda). This could not be serious, the animation looked like something straight out of the Incredibles. After some investigation I discovered it was totally cereal. It is a trailer for a 90 minute long preview of a cartoon network series. Who would pay to go to the movies to watch a 90 minute preview?! This is the description of the youtube video:The 90-minute premiere episode of the CGI animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars will have a limited release in U.S. cinemas starting August 15th.Not only will this be the first 3-D animated movie for the highly-successful saga, but this will also be the first Star Wars movie not released through Twentieth Century Fox. Fox released all six Star Wars movies, plus the original microseries The Clone Wars on home video. But Warner Bros. and Turner Broadcasting will release Star Wars: The Clone Wars this time. The principle reason is that Turner's and W.B.'s subsidiary, The Cartoon Network, managed to snag the rights to the series from creator George Lucas.Star Wars: The Clone Wars on The Cartoon NetworkThe new series will premiere this fall on The Cartoon Network, later airing on TNT."I felt there were a lot more Star Wars stories left to tell," said George Lucas in the press release for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. "I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the art of animation forward.""Nothing like this has ever been produced for television," said Stuart Snyder, President/COO Turner Animation,Young Adults & Kids Media. "For 30 years, Star Wars has shown that it appeals to a huge breadth of fans. Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network will be appointment television for everyone in the family. We're thrilled to be working with Lucasfilm again and very excited to be playing a role in bringing this remarkable adventure to viewers."The Star Wars we all know and love has been reduced to a cheap cartoon, made with the sole purpose of trying to squeeze as much money out of the name as possible. Star Wars looks like a cheap joke now, it's just sad, really.

Star Instructable Creators

Welcome to the Star Instructbale Creator Forum!  This is a forum where you can post links to your new instrucables you create. Basic guidelines and purposes of this Forum: 1. If you see someone is struggling with creating instructables, invite them to this forum for some advice 2. If you yourself are new or you are creating your first instructables, feel free joining the tread too. 3. Share your ideas openly and help each other create newer, cooler, and more detailed instructables. Some things to look for in someone's instructable: 1. Do they have any pictures or videos? If so, are they good quality? 2. Is grammer an issue? A couple minor mistakes are ok, but you may want to point them out. 3. If all goes bad, is there a backup plan/procedure? (Not required for all, just depends on project) This opportunity is open to anyone, however it is mainly geared towards new members of the community.  Welcome and good luck! PS - If you have any questions, or you want me to help you with your insturctable, just PM me and I will be sure to respond.

Star Rating System Implemented

Instructables can now be rated on a 5-star rating scale. So instead of saying that you like an Instructable, you can now say just how much you like it! Some fancy mathematical formulas were used to convert the previous ratings to the new scale, providing the scores that you see now. These formulas will be getting tweaked as we get some kinks out of the system and fine tune the results, but all of the new ratings will be saved for more accurate results in the future. So for now, go out and use the stars to more accurately rate new and older Instructables! More ratings will help fine tune future searches and encourage more people to post better Instructables.

How are ratings (stars) calculated? Answered

How are the ratings calculated?  I used to assume that the number of stars an instructable had was an average of all of the ratings other readers had rated it.  But there have been two times that I was the first to rate and rated a terrible 'ible with a half star (one was just worthless and one deserved negative stars for being really bad advice) and it gets posted as "3.68 stars - your rating 0.5 stars".    When I rated a new 'ible as a 4, it came up as a 4.

Default star ratings are flawed

I think it is a very bad idea for an Instructable to have a default rating of any kind, much less one as high as (what I assume is) 4. I have rated some seriously flawed 'ibles with low star ratings like 1.5 stars, I have been the first to rate them, and yet they "average" something like 3.55 stars with ONLY my rating. This SERIOUSLY skews the ratings system and makes it close to worthless, as nearly all 'ibles have a rating of 3 or better... no matter how seriously flawed they made be.

Star needs help covering her court fees for the "hoax device" that she was wearing. You can either send her money by paypal directly or you can buy a shirt and $5 of the proceeds will go to Star.If your order is over $15, you can get $5 off by using this coupon: SPREADSHIRT3000Since the lightweight shirts are cheaper, I bumped the price up a bit so you could use the coupon for one shirt. You save money and another $1 goes to Star.Let me know if there are other shirt styles that you want. Or you can design your own shirt by clicking the "Create and Sell a t-shirt with this design" button. Star wars fans look here!

This is it, the most durable knex lightsaber ever imagined. Each piece doubles up the next creating a blade that will not bend nor break, even with high speed collision. The hilt (figure 2) is also quite detailed considering this is made with knex. The only con to this is that the blade doesn't retract. If you like what you see then tell me. I will make it an instructable if asked.
