Arduino starts up automatically

Hello instructables, i ran the code below in the arduino uno, (4 motors, 2 L293D driver chips) void loop() {   digitalWrite(motor_pin1,LOW);    //forward back   digitalWrite(motor_pin2,HIGH);   digitalWrite(motor_pin3,HIGH);      digitalWrite(motor_pin4,LOW);   digitalWrite(motor_pin5,LOW);    //forward front   digitalWrite(motor_pin6,HIGH);   digitalWrite(motor_pin7,HIGH);      digitalWrite(motor_pin8,LOW);   delay (5000);     digitalWrite(motor_pin1,HIGH);   //turn right    digitalWrite(motor_pin2,LOW);   digitalWrite(motor_pin3,HIGH);     digitalWrite(motor_pin4,LOW);   digitalWrite(motor_pin5,HIGH);   //turn right    digitalWrite(motor_pin6,LOW);   digitalWrite(motor_pin7,HIGH);     digitalWrite(motor_pin8,LOW);   delay (2000);     digitalWrite(motor_pin1,LOW);    //stop moving   digitalWrite(motor_pin2,LOW);   digitalWrite(motor_pin3,LOW);      digitalWrite(motor_pin4,LOW);   digitalWrite(motor_pin5,LOW);    //stop moving   digitalWrite(motor_pin6,LOW);   digitalWrite(motor_pin7,LOW);      digitalWrite(motor_pin8,LOW);     while (1); } by right, the motors should stop infinitely due to the while(1), but this is what happens instead : initial                 : loop1 12 secs later   : loop 2 1 sec later        : loop 3 1 sec later        : loop 4 .... why is it running more than once?

Geting started

I would like to help people start building and flying model aircraft! I started flying unpowered gliders with my dad at the age of 5 by the age of 8 I could do figure 8ts with the same model of unpowed glider, then I moved to my own plane a wingo which is a great durable slow park flyer, the kit comes with every thing you need except for a controller, servos and glue. I put a brushless motor and a lipo battery with this setup I could fly strait up until you could barely see the plane (about a mile high). After that I got my first 3d trainer a ucando which is also durable and constructed with hot glue!!! So far I have crashed into a blueberry bush and torn wings to pieces, but I am in the process of gluing back together.I prefer electric models over gas or glow models; their cheaper, quieter, smaller and more durable. Here is a great place to find beginner and advanced electric planes. Their are also different types of kits, ARFs (Almost Ready to Fly) are my favorite type of plane they include most of what you need for the plane inside the box, most only take 2-6 hours to complete and dry. Much easier for beginners to build and not mess up. Normal kits have only parts and dont usually include motors batteries or any thing else, they can take weeks to build but can be much cheaper. And theirs a third RTF (Ready To Fly) more expensive than ARFs but most of the time all you have to do is charge the batteries! You should visit your local hobby store to find out more about the local clubs and flying fields it is illegal to fly some sized planes in naborhoods I am not familiar with all the laws but I only fly at flyingfeilds. A plane like the warp would probly be fine to fly in your back yard or naborhood field. You should know that making model Rc planes can be addictive, expensive, and when you crash and destroy what you have been working on for a month extremely frustrating.Join the AMA and your local flying club, model aviation is a great way to make friends and meet new people, oh and its fun! For all ages!horizon hobby is a group of hobby stores. hobby store locatorIf you have any Q's please ask!Id also like to start a list of good trainers the yard stick is not as durable as the wingo but can be found every werethe wingo a great beginer ucando a 3D trainer (get a wingo first)

Getting started!

Hello everyone, I just found this site last night and lets just say that i didnt get to much sleep! A quick introduction about me. Im 24y old guy from sweden. I loved taking electronic stuff apart as a kid (not so much putting them back together) and i did some experementing in school but it soon faded. I then went on to become an electrician(house/construction installations) and have been working as one for 6 years now but never really went back into electronics. The last few years LED's has been getting big as the main lightsource in our homes but the comercial solutions aren't always satisfactory, hence my renewed interest in this. Only thing i've done outside of work is built some computers but never really modding. As if i didnt  have enough to do in my spare time i now wanna get into this, so i have a few questions on how to get started: - What basic tools do i need? Soldering kit, precision screwdrivers, multimeter......more? -What store is best for getting supplies/tools? Is it ebay or do you prefer a specific company? Any site that is better/worse to use living in sweden? Also should i stock up on basic components or just get what i need for my projects? -Is there any other communities that supplements this one? Any Swedish sites perhaps? -Anything else i should know before buying some stuff and starting? Right know im mostly focused on mods involving LED and lighting in general. Suggestions about that? Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section but i didnt really find any better place. I know this might not be as exciting as the other questions in here but all input is greatly appreciated!  TLDNR: What do i need to know/have to get started modding electronics? Cheers!

can i set up a capacitor bank to start up my car if the battery is dead?

a huge advantage to capacitors is low leakage (for some types) and i want to know, first of all, how much energy a starter motor needs to start the engine? one of my constraints is money (>$200) so if it works, but i can't afford the capacitors, then oh well. also, i want to know if i can make a simple circuit that would sense if the battery is dead and then switch to using the capacitors and also be able to recharge the capacitors. im also worried about the amount of leakage of capacitors with such high capacity (which might defeat the purpose of this idea), and where i could actually put the rig that would be safe from heat, and still have access to the starter motor. if this is feasable, i just might make my first instructable out of it: the invincible starting car

Senior Research Project

Hello Everybody! I'm doing a research project about 3D printing and the effect it has on the way we make things. I've created a quick survey to get some general information about the maker perspective on the technology, and it would be awesome if I could get some responses. This is especially for those who use 3D printing regularly. Thanks in advance!  - basementhacker

Easier starting chainsaw?

Is it possible to make a pull-cord chainsaw (Stihl 029) easier to start?  I'm in my mid-seventies and have lost much of my former strength, as such, I have extreme difficulty starting the saw initially. Once it's warmed-up, no problema, but after sitting for a few days, well—.  Anyone have a suggestion (aside from buying an electric saw which will not be practical, because of the cord length)?

How to start with Technology?

Hello, I'm already visiting this website for a while, but never really sign up. Today was finally the day I decide to register myself. I'm very interested in the technology section of this website, and I think all of you are awesome inventors! :)  So back to my question, I don't know a lot about technology, so my question was, where is the best place to start (or learn) things about technology? Like building things all by yourself, with batteries and such things. I'm a beginner in technology, I only know some programming on computers, and a bit about how computers are build, but that's all! I hope someone can help me! :) Thanks In Advance! :)

Getting Started with PIC

Hello again, I'm looking for suggestion or first hand accounts on getting started with programmable IC's. I'd say I have enough basic electronics skill to get by, but I'm completely new to programmable chips. So I'm asking where is the best place to start? I'm mostly just looking for hobby stuff at this point. The PICAXE stuff seems simple enough for a starting point, anyone have first hand experience there? I should note I don't have any access to programming though parallel ports, and I'm running Windows Vista, so any set up would need to support usb and my os. Additionally any recommendations on some reading would be nice too. Thanks again Nic

Can i install (rig up) a pull start on my 18hp riding mower?

I know that they dont make pull starters for large hp motors because you would have to pull really hard, BUT i am willing to pull really hard. :) My starter is messed up and i dont want to spend a fat stack of cash to fix my 18 hp murray rider. I know i will be able to rig up a connection between any pull starter and my mower, but the question is "is this a bad idea, and will it work?" I have also heard of using a drill and socket to start your engine, but i dont want to do this because when the engine does start, it will turn faster than your drill and mess you up! i have been having problems with burning out the switch that is wired to the starter. SO finally i removed the switch entirely and tried to start it by touching the wires together and it made a "snap" inside the machine (not around the starter) and now it doesnt try to start anymore. The battery currently reads 12v and the switch wires also show 12v. There are no fuses inside the mower. I dont know what to do!

Question by MechEngineerMike    |  last reply

Well, it's a start.....

Just as it got warm here, our dual fan, window fan gave up the ghost.....but I wasn't about to just throw it out without a fight..... First step, most likely suspect, since there was no strain on the cord, was the switch, an old OLD 4 position mechanical clunker that sparked visibly in the dark under the Bakelite case. That seemed ok (it was screwed together so disassembly was a snap).  Testing continuity gave mixed results.  So, I found the place where I has spliced a longer cord into the short wire to the switch and viola'!   After only 45 minutes of getting absolutely filthy with dust, I found the broken wire.   This time, instead of just soldering and taping, I put some heat shrink tube in line before soldering them back together.   Now I have my fan back......ok, so I guess I am not completely worthless yet :-)

Getting started for a beginner

Hi there, I hope this is in the right forum. So, I have always liked to work with my hands, seeing things people made and thinking "I WOULD LOVE TO GET INTO THAT" and I recently decided to make good on my wishes and wish to really get into the DIY scene. I'm looking for help on what tools I should get my hands on to start working on things. An example of something I wish tor re-create would be this: https://www.instructables.com/id/Portable-PC-project-inspired-by-Shadowrun-Cyberdec/ I'm not looking for help on what it takes to make up the end product but rather the tools one would use consistently to make everything fit and what not. Is there a sort of beginners toolbox or something of that sort I should look into getting? Sorry if this is confusing, I'm confusing even myself a bit, haha. On a side note, does everyone here have a garage they work in? I'm in NYC and as many of you know it's not the easiest place to have a workbench. Can anyone recommend me places you would go to work on projects? Thank you in advance.

Getting started with LEDs

Hey Everybody, This is crazy but I ran into this website through a random link in Lifehacker and after what I saw here, I quickly made an account and I bought PRO just to support the site. I am a big fan of communities that exist to enlighten the average brain and to evolve us as beings in creating new things and getting out that genius in ya. Anyway, my current huge curiosity is LEDs. I love them, I don't know much about them except that they are little plastic bubbles that take very little electrical power to get them going. I want to learn more however, I have a project which is to light up my computer desk's edges in my room. Problem is, I don't know where to start. I tried reading a bunch of instructables here already but most of them do not really explain the wiring process. I am a graphics designer and I have had a minor in computer science but never got into electrical engineering. I understand the simple things that go behind an electrical cricuit (like power sources and positives and negatives) but thats the extent of how much I know. I need somebody to help me and get me going so I can start evolving. Could anybody here help me get started? A few explanations, guides, tutorials? Thank you very much in advance.

Electric lawn mower starts up as soon as it is plugged in. Needs new start button? Answered

Hello everyone, I have a Kobalt electric lawnmower that initially stopped working after I cut grass that was too high. I searched this forum and found out what I needed to do - replace the rectifier.  I was very excited! I replaced it and now when I plug the mower in, it starts as soon as the wires are connecting. I do not need to push the button and lift the handle in order for it to start as one normally does. In other words, it seems the start button is now malfunctioning. I am thinking that all my attempts to start the mower when the rectifier was not functioning , and me tripping the circuit breaker, etc. somehow damaged the start button. However, I don't know. So, my question is is it bad for the mower to start right up like that? Also, does it sound like it could be the start box up by the top or is it possibly something else? I would appreciate any ideas someone has.

Write Up Deleted

I just spent 4 hours writing up a really kick butt guide using the new editor.  I went to publish.  Published it.   I had something like 15 steps written out, and then I had three.  Just three.  The rest were gone.  No idea why or how. What happened is that I started writing in the "old" editor, but stopped three steps in before switching to the new editor.  Seems as if the system didn't like that. Oh well.  Looks like I wasted four hours of my time.

I still have the option to boot Ubuntu when my computer starts up, but when I select it, It won't boot. I want Ubuntu out of my options to boot from. Lawn mower won't start? Answered

I have a Briggs and Straton Troy Bilt self propel mower.  I hit a small stump the other day and the mower cut off.  I generally have trouble with the mower not restarting after it runs for a while and gets hot, but he next day fires up and runs fine.  After hitting this small stump it almost starts after about 4or5 pulls and then it kicks back like there is too much compression in the firing chamber.  It almost pulls the cord out of my hand and a little bit of white smoke comes out of the exhaust.  I have checked the supply to the carburetor, cleaned the carburetor, cleaned the plug and check that it's firing.  I have not checked the fuel, but I have cut grass several time since the beginning of summer with no problem.  What do you think could be the problem?  I'm very mechanically included, but I'm a little stumped on this one.  Thank you for your help!!

Xena Armour......starting blocks

Well i'm pretty ambitious in wanting to cosplay a charcter from from favourite tv show Xena : Warrior Princess, no matter how camp and cheesy it is :-P Most of the sewing and basic pieces such as armbands wristbands and the corseted dress are easy enough to do....the difficulty will be in replicating the 'metal armour' especially the breastplate Xena wears...and possibly the  Chakram (that round frizbee like throwing thing :P ) So i've been looking around at different methods trying to get an all round idea of the best way to go about it, keeping in mind i'd want to keep this costume forever if possible (with a $2000 price of a Xena costume from Todd's costumes not being ideal) ...i want authenticity, with the armour being a strong and sturdy as possible with a DIY. Saying that the various instructables for Halo seem to be the way to go: Having seen three awesome tutorials that i could definitely see myself end up using: https://www.instructables.com/id/Halo-ODST-Armor-Helmet-Part-1-of-6-of-ODST-Armo/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Using-Paper-Resin-and-Fiberglass-to-be-the-Maste/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Build-Halo-Armor/?&sort;=ACTIVE&limit;=40&offset;=40 Going the Halo armour route honestly seem the easiest. As while i would love to get as close to authentic metal battle armour as possible....there is time, money, and skills to consider. Also through looking here: http://www.therpf.com/f24/need-help-xena-armor-85017/ I've seen that it might be quite possible to create a two piece mould to cast the items. This would involve making a paper mache cast of my chest...creating the shape of the breast plate onto that....removing the breast plate...probably shaped out of nice sturdy lay (or not). From there.....a  mould could be cast from the breastplate....probably by something simply enough to mould around the front and the back of the breastplate....pressed to take on it's form and shape. One side would have to be done and dried/cured...the the other ensure the shaped of the breast plate is imprinted correctly and that non of the resin will seep through the mould... Now. I would love ideas for methods, materials, best way to paint to cast as i am a total noob just throwing around ideas at this stage. Some questions: Would it be possibly to use some as a finish so that the breastplate and other items actually feel like they are made of metal (never mind that there filled with resin)? How hard and how brittle would the resin be? Is it just like plastic? Will it break easily? If there is say a bit of side spillage when casting the resin, would it be possible to fix, say cut it off? What about the possibility of using Precious Metal Clay? Wouls it be hard/brittle/expensive/breakable? Is there such a think as bendable resin? (say for the armbands and wristbands) Would it be possible to 'coat' (as you might paint) resin onto the clay breastplate and remove it to create a replica? (without the need for a two part mould in this case)

Provide cost estimate at the start of classes?

I love the new classes feature here at Instructables, and have the ambition to complete as many of them as possible. I do have some feedback for them, however, and that is that the introduction to the class should include a rough estimate of how much it's going to cost to buy the various bits needed to complete the class. I've just finished the Arduino class and loved the fact that a lot of the lessons leading up to the final project contributed to the final build, and as such helped keep the costs of buying the materials (relatively) low. The same can't be said for the Electronics class, however, which has different projects to build for each lesson and is working out rather expensive as a result. Now please understand, I'm not complaining about the fact you have to build a project for each lesson. If anything I'm rather enjoying it. But a little heads up of what roughly how much the class is going to end up costing would be a welcome addition. I can see this consisting of two different sums: - the cost of equipment which is needed, but once you have it, you have it for keeps. - and the cost of any materials which will be consumed by the project. I'm keen on moving onto another class just as soon as I complete the Electronics one, but would like to be able to work out which one I should go for, taking things like price into account, before I get started - rather than maybe having to abandon the class because I suddenly find I can 't afford some of the equipment or materials I'll need for it. Thank you

It's been a while since I used this app. The number 1 reason is because the app messes up a lot and there have been no attempts to fix it. For some reason they decideded to make it so you have to sign in every time you use the app even if it was just 10 min ago. The problem is that you can't sign in from your app. It switches to the web browser to sign in and when you click facebook or sign in half the time it doesn't switch back to the app and the other half it just doesn't sign in. I started using the app again and here it is 2 years later and they still have not fixed the problem. Now I notice that it has advertisements in the middle of people's posts thanks for eating up my data. If these problems are not fixed I won't be using this again

AC Pump Motor Not Working? Answered

I have just come across a free pool pump and hope I will be able to get it up and running.  So far I have had absolutely no luck with it.  The run switch seems to work and so I don't think it is the culprit.  I have even tried two newish capacitors which I know work.  When I plug it in it just hums.  It doesn't throw the breaker so I don't think a short is the problem and it isn't bound up as I can turn it easily by hand.  There is also no sign of twitching as the motor attempts to start.  The overpower protection switch seems to be good and shows continuity across all polls.  The motor itself has continuity where I believe it is necessary so I am at a loss for what could be wrong.  The motor says it is good for 115 volts as well as higher but I would prefer not to shove higher voltages through it if not necessary.  Do any of you have ideas on how I could get this up and running as the pump is in excellent condition and will be useful as a runoff booster pump.

Why is it so hard to get a Collection started?

I thought I had made one, but it didn't show up in my profile. I went back, and apparently I only got to the "Draft" stage. When I tried to start it up, it said I had to add 5 Instructables to it - but how do you do it from that page? Is there a tutorial on setting up Collections? This is very frustrating. ETA: And now I see that there is no option for asking *this* kind of question offered in the categories or Channels boxes below. Well, I can't find a Contact Us button, so this goes here. Not very user-friendly.

I'm up to something dastardly...

Does anyone here have experience with: -electric vehicles in general, -Prius-style hybrids -deep-cycle batteries -independent rear suspensions -repurposing "free" lithium-ion batteries -The heat output of half a ton of such batteries, and a cooling system that might be up to the job -electric dragsters -building a car from scratch (and I do mean scratch... starting with building the frame) -Using a large gasoline engine to power a generator, the output of which directly powers an electric motor, and any power left over going to the above-mentioned batteries -high performance electric motors -low-performance electric motors -Breaking, destroying, or otherwise rending any of the above components? On a budget?
