Soldering Station

I am looking for a well-built, durable soldering station that has adjustable output modes. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about any soldering stations that they own or used that was a great product. Also, i would like it to be under $70 is possible, but all suggestions are welcome.

How to buy a soldering station?

I've been looking around for a soldering station but I'm not really sure how to decide which to get? I will be using it for general electronics soldering. Also, I may want to repair stuff by replacing the broken components. I'd like a soldering station over an iron and I'm thinking about $50 or under. What temperature range should I be looking at? Should I consider a good solder iron like a Weller? Thanks

I'm looking for a lead free soldering station.

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a lead free soldering station. I have to do some soldering/desoldering at work and I'm having a problem. The solder on the board is too high of a temp for my trusty Radio Shack soldering iron. To date I've purchased a 50watt iron and I would say that almost did the trick. But, desoldering was a fail. So, I would like to get a professional strength iron that can do the work without breaking my budget ($120). At this point I don't know what to look at 60 or 70 watt or 80. So, if anyone can recommend a good digital lead free solder station? Thanks Everyone!

What soldering station do I get?

Ok, all, I've got a good one for you, and I'm sure all the diehard fans are gonna come out of the woodwork.  I've been looking for some time for a decent soldering station that I can start doing PCB/fine work with.  I used to have a Weller digital rework station a long time ago, but don't know what might be good now.  I've gotten back into doing small work, such as SMC, XBee, Arduino, rework, and the like, almost all on a very small scale, and I've pushed the Radio Shack special I've got to the limit, and managed to brick two routers. I need to know your opinions, on stations ranging up to $300 (preferably around $100 to $200), that would be good for me.  I know that this is more than likely going to upset many in the 'ible community, being willing to spend that much, but when I get started doing some of this major device hacking, I'm going to start putting my stuff up here.  I'm looking forward to a lot of cool stuff, but can't get it done without the right tools.  There are too many different stations out there, and not enough reviews, especially after searching for nearly a month.  Can anyone help?

Good reflow solder station?

Hello, I am looking to get  a hot air reflow solder station. It will be used to mainly repair cracked solder joints on SMD-filled boards. As I gain skill I would like to start soldering SMD. I digress; does anyone know of a good entry-level hot air reflow solder station I should get? Preferably a digital one, and one that does not have the added soldering iron (already have a soldering iron....). Any advice/suggestions on what to buy is greatly appreciated.

Freezing Grand Central Station

A couple hundred people created an event in Grand Central Station in NYC simply by freezing in place. The event was coordinated by Improv Everywhere, a group that has managed to create some wonderfully amazing events with good coordination, a lot of volunteers, and not much else. Who needs a big budget to do something this fun and memorable? The plan: Get a couple hundred people to freeze in place in GCS for five minutes. People stopped mid-conversation, mid-stride, even mid-paper drop. The execution: Flawless. Improv Everywhere pageNote: my landlord participated in one of their events at a Home Depot. He loved it and if you're near NYC, check out one of their events in the future.

Charging station for eee PC

Hi, I need a charging station for an eee PC 4G from ASUS. I was searching several days in the internet but I didn't found something. The cradle is only needed for charging nothing else. After working with the eee pc I only would plug it in the cradle upright for charging. Where I can find such a charging station for the eee pc or a station for an other device wich suits to the eee? If there's no matching station how I could build it by my self? Here's a drawing of my idea:

Arduino wireless weather station

I built the Arduino wireless weather station that I found on a "Instructables" video. Everything works great and I love the project. On the 3.2" display I have one problem, the "outdoor temperature" gets all scrambled up almost like it doesn't clear the previous displayed temperature reading. The humidity and barometric pressure readings look fine. I can clear up the display if I press the reset button but within a few seconds it gets all scrambled up again. Any ideas what to do? Thanks again for a great project!

Building an ultrasonic soldering station ?

I have some strage projects coming up that will require me to solder things together that usually don't really like this.In my past job this was quite easy as we had an ultrasonic soldering bath and several ultrasonic soldering stations.Well, the access to those is gone :(At first I thought "How hard can it be to build one?"Not really too hard for a half decent soldering bath but a lot harder for a soldering iron...The soldering stations we used operated in the range of 50-60kHz.Commonly available transducers and their drivers however you find for 28 and 40kHz.Finding small ones in the range of 10 to 20W is also not easy.I can deal with a soldering iron that ends up in the size of a 500W wood burning iron as long as the tip is replacable. But what are the frequencies really required to solder for example on ceramic, titanium or lab grade glass?Does anyone have experience with doing this on lower frequencies than what the professional stations use?Last but not least:Is there any software available (preferably free or as an online tool) to simulate the quite long feed horn that is required with a soldering tip?Going with 1/4 wavelenghts is logical but how could I get the info on the actual shape required without simulating it first?I was thinking of using a heater cartridge like used for the hotend on a 3D printer to heat the tip. However, tests on my ultrasonic actuator showed the entire thing disintegrates within a few minutes, at least the filler and "glue" used to hold it all together.Would a free standing heating coil around the tip work?Heat transfer would be a pain and losses high, but should be possible? In case you wonder why: I just don't ave the thausands of dollars at hand required to buy one of these soldering stations....

Pirate Station Robot Helmet

Hello everyone! Name's DJ_DAN. Just need some URGENT HELP! I just saw some videos of a Drum & Bass Festival called Pirate Station Network. It's robot head design really got me, and I like to make a fully wearable DJ  helmet with animated LEDs for the eyes, and a black grid-ish metal mesh for the mouth. Something like this: http://www.featurepics.com/FI/Thumb300/20100216/Black-Metal-Grid-1460869.jpg And really basic animations for the eyes, like fading in & out, flashing, standing still, etc. The base could be made from fiberglass or mabye carbon fiber. The eye "lens" maybe could be made from plexiglas or something like that. And the "headphones" could be the part of the helmet, with built-in headphones. I just slighty edited the design of the original PSN robot helmet, which looks like something like this: http://www.4shared.com/photo/3miIkBII/robothelmetdesign.html PLEASE! I just want to know who could do one for me or at least how could I start to make the helmet! PLEASE HELP! (And sorry for my English...)

Trakpower TK-950 soldering station worth it?

Hey guys! I bought a Chinese knock off 60W variable temp soldering iron for $15CAD and used it intensively for more than a year now and the end of the part holding the tip just started to rust away and doesn't hold the tip in place anymore. Needless to say, I have enough of this and want to get a decent soldering iron, I was planning to get the Hakko FX888D as you can't get the analog knob model anymore but it's only available online from the US and comes up to $180-200CAD with the shipping which is way too expensive. I can get the TrackPower TK-950 (TeamCheckpoint TC-950 is basically the same one but the older version) for $130CAD with a 5 years warranty at my local store, it seem like a clone of the Hakko 936 but what kind of quality is it? Perhaps like the Yihua? If you guys know anything about it or any other recommendations on soldering stations I can get for around the same price with better quality in Canada, it'd be great! I do a lot of soldering through hole only for now and I also do a lot of desoldering, this is how I get most of my electronic components so I need a soldering station that will last me for a while and that doesn't smell like a Chinese knock off out of the box. Thanks for your time. :) -Electrospark
