Statistics help, anyone?

I want to calculate a statistic involving several different factors, but don't know the math. This person has different characteristics I wish to consider.  One occurs in about 10% of the general population, one in about 15% of the general population and one in about 7% of the general population, with no relationship between the three.  In other words, one is not more likely to be found in one of the other two groups by virtue of being in the third. In a population of 34,000,000, how many such individuals are likely to occur? Thanks much

Cool Forum Statistics

I'm a sucker for statistics. Check out what I Stumbled on.This website lets you see statistics on just about any forum or message board on the web. It's pretty insane. As an example, here's some stats on the Community Blog forum. On this particular forum, Goodhart has had the most posts this week, followed by Adrian Monk and then Keith-Kid. With Labot2001 at a strong tenth. ;-)Just thought I'd shared something of interest ;-)

Statistical Process Control

Is there any interest in Statistical Process Control? I posted one instructable about it: https://www.instructables.com/id/Using-Statistical-Process-Control-to-test-the-Atti/ I am considering an instructable to measure the quality of resistors. Do they really hold 5% tolerance? The test is simpler than the test in my last instructable, and I would get deeper into the maths.

Getting project viewership statistics

I notice in the sidebar area of my projects there's a little button with a trend line icon, which shows total views, today's views, and the referrer.  Is there any further granularity available for that data, where I could actually get a graph of views over time, or a way to do that using Google Analytics for a project?

p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0.0cm; font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Times New Roman; } div.Section1 { page: Section1; } I have noticed that different members have various colours as a bottom bar on their avatars, also that there are differences in the info & stats in each one. Would I be correct in believing that these are some kind of indicator as to the input of each individual member & that the colour & stats will alter as the member becomes more involved such as publishing ibbles & leaving ratings?

Introducing the Kiteman number

Seeing the new Kiteman 'ible "Welding a barbeque", it strikes me we ought to develop a "kiteman number" here, like the Erdos number beloved of mathematicians. The K-number is the number of steps between your 'ibles collaborators and Kiteman. Clearly Perryscope, Kiteman's co-conspirator on the barbeque has a K-number of 1. I myself claim K-number of 1 too. If you collaborate with someone with a Knumber of 1, then you have a knumber of 2 etc. What's yours ? Steve

Commands needed in R language?

Hello everyone I hope that you are fine. Because I am starter, I am facing difficulties in figuring out commands that do the following: Find the sample mean M and sample standard deviation S Build the histogram. Find if the shape of the distribution is close to normal or not. Add to the histogram plot the line corresponding to the probability density function of the normal distribution using obtained mean and standard deviation. Set up a 95% CI for the sample mean, using your values of M,S and N Use the temperature (tempc and tempf) data given in the excel sheet. You can download the excel sheet from following link: https://app.box.com/s/8uw6os46iibmx4n5t21q Kind Regards raishikoh

IDEA: Statistics for "data geeks"

Numbers motivate me. I guess I can call myself a "data geek", as some people like to call it. I remember pretty much the amount of views each one of my Instructables has, but that's not the point. I love all sorts of numbers, and I know I'm not the only one. With the new update, we can now see less numbers, which is a bit disappointing... As I wrote, numbers motivate me. I don't know if this would ever happen, but it would be nice to see what actual "achievements" we have.  For example, it would be nice if something like these, would show up in my YOU page, which I know is being updated right now: Most viewed Instructable: My most viewed Instructable is ranked the 154th most viewed on the site... Followers: I am the 67th most followed member on the site... Total views: I am the 35th most viewed member on the site... Total number of Instructables: I am ranked at number 62 as a member with the most published Instructables in total... Number of contest wins: I've won in __ contests which is the most on the whole website!... It would actually be pretty funny if one of these were actually true...

Achiev'ibles - Some interesting statistics

Hi Everyone. Tonight I did some updates to the Perl script which scrapes the statistics from your Instructable profile page. With the changes I made I now collect 3 more stats that I didn't before, because they were kept in weird places. As of tonight I'm now also collecting the number of people you're following, the number of favourites you have and your number of best answers (which is hidden, you can normally only see it by looking at the HTML). (Click here if you haven't a clue what I'm talking about and haven't heard of Achiev'ibles before) So with these new stats, I thought it'd be fun to announce the 15 members with the most of each stat. And so here they are! Following: mary+candy 1450 jessyratfink 1161 scoochmaroo 979 Dr.+Pepper 845 Goodhart 755 sunshiine 697 dombeef 655 Hiyadudez 607 zieak 298 nfk11 257 knexinventer 249 AngryRedhead 230 PotatoCoffee 206 MegaMetal8 203 poofrabbit 190 ----- Favourites: rockhardmj 2344 poofrabbit 1039 MichelMoermans 439 knexinventer 380 ewilhelm 320 CrayfishYAY 282 possum888 272 annahowardshaw 255 canida 252 Kryptonite 236 DJ+Radio 226 dombeef 225 Win+Guy 224 Kaelessin 213 iceng 199 Lithium+Rain 199 ----- Best Answers: steveastrouk 835 Re-design 692 lemonie 575 Kiteman 365 kelseymh 344 rickharris 334 iceng 228 canucksgirl 214 NachoMahma 178 AndyGadget 161 RavingMadStudios 129 Vyger 127 yokozuna 103 jeff-o 102 gmxx 90 mikeasaurus 89 Ok so I actually included 16 for favourites and best answers, because the 16th places were so close to 15th. Interesting stats? It should also be remembered that these aren't site wide, just for the 300 active site users that have signed up to be on the list. Finally, Canucksgirl sent me a new patch design this week. I'm not yet collecting the number of featured yet as I can't find it as a raw number, only as a percentage. Image below!

Referrers data

I have what I believe is a bug, followed by a question, and a suggestion (or two). First, the bug: When viewing the stats on any of my Instructables, I see something like the attached picture, where there are blanks for some of the referrers. That can't be right... Either that or I'm getting referrals from the NSA... I'm apparently not the only person with this issue, but I haven't seen an explanation for it. It occurs for me across multiple browsers and operating systems. My question is why don't the number of referrers add up to my total views (e.g. 41+40+15+9+8+1 = 114, not 203)? Is this because the other 89 views are coming from inside Instructables? My first suggestion is that the stats window could use a bit of explanation for people who aren't familiar with what referrals might mean. It would be nice to have mouse-over explanations or something. My other suggestion is that I would love more detailed stats information. It would be really neat to see how people are finding my Instructables internally to the site (e.g. was it a link or a search, and if it was a search, what were the search terms?). it would also be nice to be able to see precise referral links from external referrers. Thanks for making this neat data available. I hope that the solution to this bug is quick and easy!

Adding Today Views To Published Screen

I like to keep track of the statistics on my instructables, so I click on "Published" to see how they are doing. There is: Total Views; Rating; and Comments. Would it be possible to add "Today Views" as well, so that you don't have to open up each instructable, and then go to "stats" for this bit of information? Thank you! Cman

How to Calculate Viewership

As the statistics page on Instructables has never been particularly reliable, I have used an alternate method to check my viewership for some time. As other people have expressed interest in statistics, I've decided to share how I do it. Overall viewership between two points in time To use this method, you will need to have taken a snapshot of your member page and have logged it into the Internet Archive or recorded the number of views you have attained at a previous date. Compare the number of views between the two dates to figure out the number of views that have occurred during the period between the two recordings. To find average daily views Using the date from the Internet Archive snapshot or your own records, use this to calculate the number of days that have elapsed since the previous entry to find the number of days that have transpired. Divide the difference in viewership between the two dates by the number of days that have gone by to find your average overall daily viewership. To find the average daily views of your instructables Perform the above steps and divide the number of daily views by the number of instructables you have posted. ----------------------------------------- As with most statistics, the figures you will see from these calculations can be skewed. However, they are still good for getting a good general handle on what the situation is for you as far as viewership goes. If you have not used Internet Archive beforehand, it is a harmless way to log this information as well as take a screenshot of something that you and others can look back on at a later date. Statistical use is only one of many this sort of thing can be used for.

Instructables Addicts

Well, I was looking at the Quantcast Page for Instructables, and it was pretty interesting. Of course at the bottom, it says "<1% Addicts, 3% Traffic" Obviously they don't know our community... Instructables with zero comments or zero ratings are included, which skews the data, but it's still interesting.total positive ratings / total number of Instructables = 10.4total number of comments / total number of Instructables = 19.1The raw data is attached, if you'd like to take a look.

A SIMPLE instruction guide on statistics and chemistry?

Statistics and chemistry equations are some of the most complex calculations for people who did not grow up in a science background but are essential for students looking to further their degrees in fields that require bio chemistry while students excel in practicals its the calculations that cause problems like log, ph calculations, various option in statistics when to use which rule. A better tutorial for college level statistics and from basic chemistry to college level would be appreciated by various students the world over. Thank you in advance all areas of these two fields would be appreciated.

Google Analytics Integration

It'd be great to know more about where people are coming from when they land on an Instructable. The stats that are currently provided are limited (only provides the domain, not the full url) and don't add up to the total views. If the author could input a google analytics tracking id, then the tracking coding could automatically be included and the author could have access to much more detailed information.

The only reason I ask is that out of nowhere one of my instructables has been speeding up in pageviews, overtaking one about sex and chasing the jet engine up as well but the referral URLs are all just the usual searches from google etc. Either way, anybody any notions on why people may have a sudden renewed interests in Zippos.

User statistics report -- breakdown by traffic source is buggy

Here's the second bug I've found with the resurrected user statistics report (/you/stats/).  If you choose the option "By Traffic Source", the y-axis scale and detailed numbers get really weird. The first plot below shows the inclusive last-3-months data for my top five I'bles, while the second shows the same data broken down by traffic source. As you can see, the data points are all at 62 and 125 (from which I guess that the first is actually 62.5 :-). I think what's happened is that the data has gotten multiplied by 500/8 before plotting.

What is the point of the "Best answers %" ? With 220+ Best answers, and nearly 3900 replies to questions, my "BA %" is very low. Its a major disincentive to continuing to contribute, because I should go to great lengths not to help people further with their problems, after an initial answer, because it forces my statistics DOWN. I'd appreciate a more meaningful statistic related to my contribution here.

Graphing Visitors to Your Instructables

On the off-chance that the staff haven't seen this: https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-get-a-graph-of-your-instructable-statistics/ This was brilliant while the referenced website was still functional, and this functionality should totally be an embedded feature on Instructables. I would LOVE to see a graph of visitors to my Instructables over time. Extending this idea, I imagine that there must be a lot of neat data waiting to be collected; e.g. if visitors to an Instructable came from outside the site, or from another Instructable (and which one), or from a site search (and with which search terms). Is this a feature that we could hope to see integrated in the future?

Philosophy experiment

I came across an experiment in a text on the Philosophy of Science, and I would like to test the results, if I may. Consider this scenario:Linda is is 31 years old, single, outspoken and very bright. She majored in philosophy (it's an American text). As a student, she was deeply concerned with issues of discrimination and social justice, and also participated in anti-war demonstrations. Given this background, which of these statements do you consider to be the most probable? You do not have to justify your statement (though you may if you wish), simply post the letter of the most probable statement: a) Linda is a teacher in a primary school. b) Linda works in a bookshop, and takes Yoga classes. c) Linda is active in the feminist movement d) Linda is a psychiatric social worker. e) Linda is a member of the League of Women Voters f) Linda is a bank clerk g) Linda is an insurance salesperson h) Linda is a bank clerk, and active in the feminist movement. If you are feeling particularly helpful, you could rank the statements in order of probability (most likely to least likely). Thank you in advance. >K< Update: The answers: There isn't a "right" answer. The point is that (h) was consistently given a higher average probability than either (c) or (f).  There was no statistical difference between the results of a group of undergrads with no training in statistics, students who had taken basic courses in probability as part of their main subject (eg medicine) or even graduates of Stanford Business School who had taken courses in advanced probability and statistics.

The Inverted Map

This map reimagines the Earth with the idea that the oceans are the land masses and the continents are the oceans. It's interesting to see a world map where everything is connected and it would be possible to walk the entire circumference. It reminds us that what is "normal" comes from our own personal experiences.Whether the map is a Mercator map, a Peters map, or a map of something besides the Earth, that map can have a huge effect on how you perceive it. Just like statistics, maps can be deceiving so make sure you're questioning the sources and get the best information you can. link

Animating Water Bottle Recycling Rates

Here's a neat animation of water bottle recycling rates....bottled water (in all its flavors) has become one of the most consumed, yet least recycled beverages. For example, it is estimated that in 2005 alone approximately 30 billion plastic water bottles were purchased, with only about 12% recycled (in part due to out-dated deposit laws). The remaining 25 billion bottles were either landfilled, littered or incinerated. Obviously that's a lot of bottles, but statistics involving "billions of bottles per year" can be difficult to put into perspective.
