Stereo Stolen!

My car stereo was recently stolen.. Bummer. Here is my idea; I am tired of putting stereos in my car only to have them stolen. I don't want to buy another CD player w/ an aux in input for my mp3 player, since I don't really play cd's anyways. What I want to do is install just an aux input line to my car speakers and mount that easily in the empty hole. Is that possible? Do you somehow need to power the speakers? How do you go about doing that w/out buying a new stereo? My main goal is 1)to put something there that will run the sound from the MP3 player 2)not need a stereo to do it. 3)do this so no one would think it is something they could steal and profit from. HELP! :)

Portable Stereo?

Ive seen how everyone has made a portable backpack stereo and i think that is a great idea but why not use a regular cd player with all its internals and speakers instead of going out and having to buy a separate amp and speakers and connect it all. I have a cd player disassembled and i want to replace the cd drive with what would be a line in to my ipod could this be done so i can use everything else but the cd drive?

Tweakin the stereo

How would I go about moving my speakers around to get that much better sound out of it. I drew a little crapjob diagram of where I have all the speakers now. It sounds pretty good, but I know the sub could probably find a better spot than in the floor infront of my tower speaker (although the blending of the bass is rather superb). What if I put it under my desk in the middle?

Portable car stereo

While waiting at a red light, I noticed that inside of a FedEx truck, the driver had his own portable car stereo in the cab with him. It consisted of a wood box with three 3.5" Dia speakers on the side with the stereo (what looked like an older model) sticking out of the top of the box, vertically. I'm guessing he had it wired for a cigarette lighter adapter to power the unit and the box was held in place in the cab by bungee cords. It looked like a great way to recycle old car electronics, wished I'd thought of it when I had to drive cross-country in a Uhaul with only an am/fm radio.

control Stereo Volume

I have an old style Cassette SONY x-plod car audio stereo player for car. i have removed main cassette section & replaced it with an USB MP3/FM board with remote control. I made this because i believe in SONY's amplifier so successfully tracked amp track to get source from USB board. But here i got a problem with board which forgets volume level & restores to 25 level(Default range 0 to 50 level). so volume is boosting at high at every start of player. Now i want to Analog stereo volume controller between USB board's output & SONY amplifier's input. so what should be the configuration for volume controller??? Output target for amplifier is 4speaker(2x150Watts[Front] & 2x180Watts[Rear]). Does my idea works?? if it works what is the configuration for Analog stereo volume controller.??

Fancy stereo build?

Hi everyone, So I recently purchased a new house and it has these built-in speakers in every room. Thing is that I dont have a fancy stereo or something to hook it up to, so I wanted to build something myself. I wanted to build a device that could be controlled through an old smartphone I have laying around, via bluetooth. On which I can then select songs on Spotify or radio etc. And it should also allow me to switch between which speakers I want to use. (Each one has a separate cable) Does anybody have any ideas on how to do this? Or is there maybe something on the market matching my descripion that I can buy? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Kind regards.

Converting a stereo system into an amplifier

Right so I have a Ministry of Sound, MT2, Power Tower, HI FI System. It has two external speakers which are fairly crap and a decent sub woofer. I want to take out the sound board and the screen interface, des guard the tape and CD player and remount them into a new housing. Currently the output sockets are 3.5mm headphone sockets which the speakers which came with it originally plugged into. However I have much better quality bookshelf speakers which I want to hook up. Is it possible to hook up my new speakers effectively turning e self contained stereo system into an amplifier?

Making an LG Stereo Adapter?

Hello, I have an LG GW520 and I have tried everywhere for an adapter to connect this to a stereo. I did find a company that advertised the adapter I needed but when I bought it it is the wrong size as the connection on other LG phones like the cookie models are different :( So basically I need an adapter with a 3.5mm female stereo jack on it. Is it possible to make one?... I've got lots of randoms wires and a headset that fits into the phone with one broken ear bud and a female stereo jack. When I've cut open the broken headset I've got two silver wires, and a purple, red and green wire bundled together and surrounded by fine copper and the female stereo jack has a black, red and brown wire. ....is it possible to connect these and how should I do it? Thanks for reading and I hope you can save my sanity before I just get mad and go an buy another phone that I can connect!

MP3 input alternative on a stereo

Hi guys, I have a really burning question thats been eating me for a while. Can you put an alternative input on a stereo system to read mp3s? For example i have this stereo that plays mp3s but only has the disk input. This means in order to use it i have to burn the songs i want off my computer on to a disk then i can listen to my music. For those who probably WILL ask, I don't like playing my music off my computer because it's generally really loud, i want to use this in another room as well. My taste in music constantly changes, eventually i will want to remove a couple songs or add new ones. With that said, i want to know if you can remove/replace or add another input system to where a CD reader would be so that it reads a USB input or something. Then music can easily be manipulated to the users liking. As long it's not directly connected to a computer or requires the user to make new copies of the same music that take up space. Thanks!! 6vDC Stereo Audio Amplfier

I just acquired a new, unused 6volt rechargeable battery that is rated at 12Ah. I'm looking for a Class D amplifier that'll run off said six volt battery. I've looked around but unfortunately all the amps I've found are either too low power output, or too high of voltage. I'd like to be able to get an amp that can output somewhere between five and fifteen watts stereo. Does anyone know where I could look?

Questions about computer stereos

Hi! I'm building a portable amplifier from old computer-speakers and I have a couple of questions about them. 1. How do I make the stereo-speakers mono the best way? 2. Is it possible to make low- and high-pass filters to a simple amplifier as the computer ones? I thought I'd connect one bigger speaker (a whopping 5" one!) to amplify the low frequencies and one small to amplify the high frequencies. This would work the best with a 1-channel amp. Thank you in advance, hope you understand what I'm looking for! P.S. Please move the thread if it is in the wrong category, wasn't sure if it suited better under "music" or "tech".

Car Sterio, without the stereo

So here is a question that I'm sure somebody knows how to make this work. I have a Jeep, and I never listen to the radio or have a need to play CDs. So what I want to do is rip out the stereo and mod in a female headphone jack so I can plug in my iPod. I don't see the need for a stereo anymore, so if I could just have the ipod and speakers I'd be happy. I know there is going to be at least one issue, which is the iPod wont be able to drive all the speakers, so some sort of homebrew amplifier will need to be built. Anybody already done this or at least know how to do this?

DIY Car Stereo Antenna?

Want to know if anyone has turned their roof rack into am/fm radio antenna or knows how? Not how to mount an antenna on a roof rack!!! I have a Jeep Liberty (2005), w\ (self) custom made aluminum roof rack. And I have 35ft of flexible/braided grounding strap to make internal run from roof-rack through and internally down to jeep frame if/as needed. **Concept Notes**  Outside rectangle frame is 1-1/2" (O.D.). I will rubber-coat all straight tube section then apply appropriate wire on to rubber and re-coat with rubber coating. I was then looking to slide slightly over-sized (I.D.) carbon fiber tubing over that. Ground and antenna wire will run through inside of rack turn down stanchion where bolts to roof. Rubber grommet to further insulate & protect wires. I want super reception AM & FM, little to no visible footprint, 1. What wire or such for antenna is best/appropriate? 2. Proper lay out antenna wire? ie., wrapped around primary insulated tubing or laid out length-wise.

Car Stereo Antenna for In-Home use? Answered

I'm decent with working with modifying electronics, but I don't have much experience with antennae, reception, or any of that good stuff. I have plenty of experience with soldering, both wire connections, and motherboard components, so that's not a problem.. I already have my stereo wired to my computer's psu, with the pci-e power, and already have everything hooked up as of a year ago.. Aux In, Usb, and Sd all work fine, but I can't use the FM radio function, due to my lack of an antenna.. I've heard of bending a coat hanger, and shoving it in, and I don't like that shotty work, and I used to have an extension, or an adapter, (Not sure exactly what it was), but It got mediocre reception, and I gave it to a friend that I hooked up a stereo indoors for.. I can find such an adapter cheap, but I want something that will get AWESOME signal.. I know most components that require lengths of wire drop voltage, or signal over distance, such as power cables, Cat5 cables, so on and so forth.. So what can I use, modify, or make to get the reception I want, on a budget? I don't want a crappy fix.. I just want something affordable, reliable, and something that won't look too horrible. I have the stereo mounted to my desk, so not much will be exposed, depending on the length of said antenna, Thanks in advance!!

tech noob question on stereo jack

Can I have a silly technical question for which I would have known the answer if I only paid more attention at school? how is possible that stereo headphones, ie 2 speaker circuits use only 3 cables? I understand the "ground" is the one that both speakers,ie left and right have in common but how come it doesnt bother the signals which go to the speakers? doesnt the left signal get mixed up with the right signal? and why is it called "ground" when it's not actually connected to the ground, like for example lightning conductor is? I've read through the wikipedia article about TRS several times but still can't understand it. thanks for answer, I promis I won't forget it this time :)

Troubleshooting help for connecting stereo components? Answered

Edited:  I'm having trouble getting all my stereo/TV components hooked up in the correct sequence so that each component functions as needed. All my components are Sony the cable box is Motorola (DCT700). TV (Sony KV-27FS13) with 4 input lines (Video 1, 3 & 4 from the back. Video 2 through the front panel.) Everything was rewired today to include a new cable box (due to the digital conversion) and I can see TV channels okay.  VCR (Sony SLV-798HF): On Video 1, I can view channels (when VCR is on CH3), and the cable box controls the channel, but I cannot record any other channel but the one controlled by the cable box. I can also view VHS tapes. DVD Recorder (Sony RDR-HX780): On Video 3, I can view channels controlled by the cable box, but I cannot record any other channel but the one controlled by the cable box. I can also view DVD's. I have a Sony Multi Channel AV Receiver (Model # STR-DG510). I don't know if that helps with getting this to work or not. I've included a detailed diagram. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, canucksgirl Currently the coax goes to the cable box, to the DVD, then to the VCR and then to the TV. RCA-DVD: from the cable box goes to the DVD player (in). From the RCA out goes to TV RCA in. RCA-VCR: RCA out on VCR goes to RCA in on TV.

Bad stereo ground/fried alternator

After reading the instructions I installed an aftermarket stereo in my 1999 Toyota Camry. I'm confident in that I made all the proper connections correctly, but I think my ground wire is bad.a few day after I heard a high pitch whine that got louder when the rpms got higher. Then the power would cut off from the stereo but only for a split second, then my car would do the same thing until ultumitly it was completely DEAD I couldn't even turn on my hazards. I'm pretty sure my alternator is fried. And I think it's the ground wire. Now my question is can I run a direct ground from my stereo to the car or do I have to chase this wire down?

A/V Cord to Typical Stereo Wires? Answered

I have a surround sound speaker system that only takes the typical stereo wires (you know, positive and negative electrode inputs for left and right side). I also have a stereo reciever that only provides A/V outputs. I was pondering how I could make these work when I realized that, even with an A/V cord, it still needs to make a complete circuit. Thus the cord needs to have two wires going through it, and the plug had a way to complete that circuit. Now that I know this, I want to know if I can cut the plug off of one end, strip the wires apart, and plug those wire ends in my subwoofer? If anyone knows if this is possible, please let me know! And please help me determine which wires are positive and negative current. THANKS!

Idea for 3D stereo camera attachment

I just discovered "Stereophotography" images on flickr and I came up with an idea for how you could make an attachment (that might work on any camera) to take 3D photographcs.Using 4 small mirrors I think you could seperate and then combine two images. Here's an ASCII art of my idea: (top view) [CAMERA] [] <- lens / /\ \So you can see (hopefully) that the two inner mirrors meet at the middle of the camera' lense and combine the images coming in from the two side mirrors. So in the end you get a photo comprised of two side-by-side images about 4 or 5 inches apart....and hopefully would give a 3D effect. (when eye's crossed, of course)What do you think? Have you seen anything like this before?

I have an 70's style turntable/radio console.?

I have a Magnavox 591558.  The issue is that the audio from the turntable is diminished out the left speakers. The FM tuner works and sounds great, however when using the turntable, left audio is very muffled.  As a troubleshooting step, I hooked up a Stanton STR8-100 turntable, with pre-amp, as a replacement to the built in turntable, and get the same results.  Good audio out the right channel, but muffled out the left.  So I know the issue has to be somewhere on the circuit board, as the Radio is fine through both channels. I do not see any blown capacitors, or any sign of damage on the circuit boards.  I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

Add stereo headphone jack to an exercise bike with hardwired on-board stereo speaker pair

I want to add a stereo headphone jack to an exercise bike with a pair of hard-wired on-board stereo speakers. I imagine each speaker has 2 wires going to it. Is this as easy as taking either or both ground wires and the two signal wires and wiring a 3.5 mm TRS jack? How does a connected headphone typically turn off sound in speakers? How do I handle the two ground wired (one going to each speaker).... can I just use either? or if combining grounds, do these need to be electrically "isolated", if so how? Thanks in advance.

Simplest way to combine a mono and a stereo source to play through a set of stereo headphones?

Ok, what I am specifically wanting to doing is make the Xbox voice chat (mono) and the game audio (stereo) come out through the same set of headphones. I quickly found out that I couldn't just wire them directly without turning the game audio to mono (not good for online multiplayer). I found a discussion about using an "opamp" and taking the mono signal and feeding it into the right channel then take the opamp output and feeding that back into the left channel to get a "stereo" output. Unfortunetly, I got as many details from that as I just gave here. Can anyone explain how and what parts it would take to do this? I also got the impression it might be passive, and no batteries would be a plus. Preferably, I would like to be able to get the stuff at Radioshack, and ideally, I would want to try and stuff the parts inside the over-the-ear cup style headphones directly.
