How do you tame a chicken so you can pick it up without it pecking or scratching you? Answered

My family are getting chickens for our back garden and apparently chickens aren't very friendly sometimes. How do we train them to be more domesticated and tame?

Need DIY Nerf-type weapons for Christmas - Ideas??

Our Christmas tradition starts at about 10 am with a rowdy war of some sort. Unfortunately, the Nerf company can't make an unbreakable item for overgrown boys. This year, we're going with DIY weaponry. The Marshmallow shooter is too tame, and the rubber band gun is too harsh. What other options are out there?

New categories? E.g. Homesteading

Dear Instructables, I am an organic gardener and smallholder/homesteader and most of my instructables are related to these topics, however apart from 'Pets', which is OK because my birds are very friendly and tame, there is no specific category for my Instructables. I have noticed that there are many people posting poultry instructables and it would be great if they could be grouped together. I also suggest, seeing the amount of relevant posts, that there should be a category which covers, permaculture, organic (food/horticulture and agriculture) and one for homesteading. Instructables is very well served on the engineering/science/computing side but it would be great to have a balance. Best Wishes, Pavlovafowl aka Sue

Instructables HQ flooded!

The San Francisco Bay area is being hammered by a series of winter storms right now. There are gusts to 75 MPH and a torrent of rain. All that wind-swept rain has flooded our server room and created a foot-deep lake on the runways outside the control tower! If things aren't working right on the site, it's the rain's fault, really...This storm is actually pretty tame by East Cost standards, and I'm proud to report I got a little bit of kitesurfing in yesterday morning on the front of it before the wind and rain truly picked up. It's just that we have perfect weather 90% of the year here, so it's really the relative difference, not the absolute magnitude, that makes people talk about how bad it is.

Giant rat-eating plant discovered

O_O Check out this giant pitcher plant from the Phillipines. You've heard of venus flytraps? Regular pitcher plants? Small fry compared to this behemoth. Nepenthes attenboroughii (named after Sir David Attenborough) is way bigger than those relatively tame plants, and dissolves its prey with "acid-like enzymes". From the article: "The plant is among the largest of all pitchers and is believed to be the largest meat-eating shrub, dissolving rats with acid-like enzymes.">Whimper<Call me cowardly, but I get the willies when we start discovering plants that can eat small rodents...who knows what else is out there in the as-yet-unexplored areas of the jungle...Link
