Gifts for teachers

It's that time of year again, end of the Summer term, and for a lot of kids it's their last few days in school. #2 Son's teacher runs the school's gardening club, so we bought her a trowel.  He wrote a message on the blade, and I dremelled it through to the bare metal*. What are you (or your kids) making for their teachers? Post a picture here, if you don't mind looking like a teacher's pet... *We also wiped over the bare metal with 3-in-1 oil to slow down the rust, since we'd exposed the metal.

Pesky Teachers

First off... This isnt made to insult teachers, I just needed a title to beckon people to my question. The problem I have is that the teacher at my school have a new spiffy, Anti-Slacking Device, called LAN Schools. The teacher can monitor all computers in the classroom. It also has the ability to cut off internet access to a computer. So I can no longer play my beloved flash games. Long story short. Is there any way I can play flash games on my computer through a flash drive without using internet explorer or firefox?

Teacher strike.

Well there is a teacher strike in my town and we get the day off which i don't mind.Because now its an extra long weekend. But i hope we don't have to have the strike for the whole week,because we have to add it on the the end of the year.

Instructables for teachers

I have tried twice this year to register in the the "Instructables for Teachers" section and have not heard back. How does a person become a member of that section? If other teachers are having the same difficulty I'm having I fear Instructables is losing out on what could be a great resource. I run an after school program where kids make crafts every day. I would like to share some of their projects here but I don't want to share them under my own personal Instructables handle - kokoleo, as the work they create often comes from their own ideas and  is not  indicative of my personal style. Should I simply create a new handle called Club Teasdale (the name of our program) and post them separately? If I do that, then how do we become involved in the "Instructables for Teachers" section?

Upcoming contest for teachers

Remember how there's a new channel for explicitly educational content? That's not all we're doing for teachers. We will also be running a contest specifically for educators*, so fire up those school-provided laptops and start thinking about some awesome projects you might be able to share with the Instructables community. If you'd like to win a MacBook Air, a class set of Instructables pro memberships, and other unnamed secret prizes, you just need to enter an academic Instructable or guide. We'd love to have anything academic, from elementary school art projects like construction paper masks to a university-level electrophoresis demonstration.  In this contest, we will also be accepting guides for the first time along with the usual step-by-step, photo, and video fare. Teacher Contest - Clarification?

I was reading through the rules for this contest and ran across a bit of a question about the contest overview. It says that any instructable must be "projects for students that can be incorporated into a lesson plan." I was wondering if this was only applying to projects that are being made by students or if a project, completed by the teacher, then used in the classroom with the students would be eligible. I have two ideas that fall into the second category, and I think that being able to enter into the contest would be enough effort for me to get around to making them. Please help?! Aaron

Can teachers be sued/fired for this?

Teachers at my school are somehow viewing students facebook profiles... weather its a fake account or heaven help me they can just view someones account by being a teacher.... Or it could be a snitch but I doubt it kids just don't do that in high school... I think its a total invsion of privacy. Can anything be done ?

Classroom Organization

Back to school is quickly approaching, which means teachers are heading back to set up their classrooms, unpack and reorganize books and supplies, and start planning for the new group of students. Laser Cutting in the Classroom

After creating a makerspace at my elementary school, I was always on the lookout for fresh projects and new tools and a laser cutter was that one big item at the top of my wishlist that I just never got... but, I know some teachers and librarians who are brand new to the world of laser cutting and would love pointers from other teachers who have already worked through some of the challenges of starting something new. :) So, if you have a laser cutter in your classroom or school makerspace, please share any tips or suggestions you might have for any teachers who are just starting out with one at their school. Also, feel free to share any cool projects you and your students have done or programs you use.

New teacher to the site, curious about Pro and if it is still available for free for teachers?

Hey all, I'm new to the site and I am excited to get into all the stuff on the site.  My specific questions deals with Pro for teachers and if it is still available for free.  The post I saw was old and I can't find it again (really just didn't want to look that hard) and I was wondering how I could get in on that good stuff. I look forward to posting and checking out the content.  I have a few students that have used the site for little projects of their own.  I spent some time today showing some of the students the site on my iPad and talking about getting involved next year.  I might even have a pair that will have an instructable to share in the next few weeks. Project-Based Learning (PBL) Resources

I'm always inspired by the awesome, in-depth projects teachers are doing with students in different grade levels. From animal research projects in second grade to designing 3D models of Jamestown in Tinkercad with fifth graders or CubeSat projects in High School. There's so much we can learn about PBL from each other! :)What are your "Go To" projects that you do with your students? Any tips for managing class projects and grading (rubrics or scales, etc.)? What about finding materials/resources for projects? My best resource for cardboard was the school cafeteria. :D

Teacher contest submit deadline lengthened

Hi there, I noticed that the deadline to submit Instructables for the teacher contest can been pushed back from 1/30 to 2/27. I'm assuming that this is because there are not enough entries to justify the worth of the prize. Please clarify - thank you!

Teacher Throwdown: Make Something This Summer

No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks. It’s June. The school year is done. Grades are in, students are out, and it’s time for two and a half glorious months of mai tais and piña coladas and not telling anyone to "Knock it off with the electric pencil sharpener, or, God help you Emilio, you’ll be doing it by hand for the rest of the year.” Relax. When I was teaching, I managed to relax for all of ten days. Then it was a couple of months of analyzing my practice, scheming about ways to bolster reading scores with Mad Libs, creating a DIY version of the Yacker Tracker* with an Arduino (still in the works, two years removed from the classroom), and kind of missing all the shenanigans of 150 thirteen year-old kids in Oakland. Summer is a great time to dig into project-based learning. It’s free time to get better at something that takes extra time. Building a project during the school year when you’re unsure of how it’ll work with your kids is for the brave or foolhardy. Or shop teachers. Making that project fit within your curriculum? Your budget? Your principal’s vision of studious children poring over a district-approved textbook? That’s insane. So I issue this challenge to the educators out there on Instructables: pick a project, make it over the summer, then work it into a unit or lesson plan. Build it now so you can use it later. Because design challenges are somewhat more challenging when confronted by a classroom of 35 kids coming in after lunch on a hot day in August. Use your summer. Adapt an existing project (like one of these, perhaps) or create something new just for your class. Channel your inner Phineas/Ferb** and put the 104 days of summer vacation to good use. In between piña coladas. Send me a PM with what you’re building, or talk about it in the comments. *The Yacker Tracker is a sound-controlled traffic light that changes based upon the decibel level in the classroom. It's a prize in the Education Contest that runs until Monday, June 4th. **This is a Disney cartoon about two stepbrothers who build something every day over the summer. I highly recommend it.

Tips on working/talking with teenage kids? (Teachers, parents... help!)

Specifically teenage girls. 10-13. Right now I'm helping teach an after school program for middle school girls. We teach them about being healthy - eating right, having good body image, exercising properly, etc. We have very few volunteers, but next week it's just going to be me and the site leader. I called my mom to ask for advice, and she laughed and said she never figured any of this stuff out, but if she thinks of something, she'll call me. :P We have 20-30 girls depending on the day. Any ideas for keeping them focused and on task? This is really my first time working with kids where I'm in an authority position, so I do need a little help and encouragement. Normally I'm just on the sidelines helping out and not stepping in and telling people what to do! Any words of advice? :D

New kind of contest launching January 24th

Starting this week, we will be running a new kind of mini-contest similar to the wonderful Weekly Challenges being run by mikeasaurus, scoochmaroo, and randofo. These new contests won't be too far out of the ordinary, but they're different enough I felt compelled to provide a heads-up to you loyal readers. Allow me to answer your imagined questions. What are these new contests called? Academic Challenges. What's the difference between these and a Weekly Challenge? The main difference is, um, academic. Project submissions should be usable by a teacher. I will include a list of the relevant standards for the subject matter, so pick one and make a hands-on project for it. Not too hard. We just need the answers to be useful in the classroom.  You can also submit a Guide. As long as the projects within the guide are all related to the topic of the Academic Challenge, that is. Just make sure every project is clearly tied to the academic standards we're looking for. (That'll put the majority of the work on hunting for good projects and writing good intros. Perfect for contestants who are too busy to make, but not too busy to search.) How long do these last? Two weeks. Or more, if two weeks isn't enough time to get some awesome and useful projects. But the first one will be two weeks, and the term of the contest will be clearly indicated on the contest page. What's the point of an Academic Challenge? To help build projects that teachers can use in demos or for hands-on projects with their classes. Well, that's cool I guess. Now what? Get your apples out, because the first Academic Challenge will be about Newtonian physics. And it starts tomorrow. Don't have any ideas? Was your last experience with Newtons primarily fig-based? Get hunting now for cool projects that demonstrate Isaac's big ideas and make a GUIDE. (I really want some guides, guys. Make guides.)

Homework Excuses thet will be the Talk of the Teachers Lounge

When you forget your homework, it's nice to add some humor to the situation and make the teacher laugh (hopefully).  Here are some excuses I came up with: "It fell into the Twilight Zone!" "My Chicken was in my room while I was doing it, and his diaper fell off.  I figured you didn't want it in the classroom, so I saved everyone the drama and chucked it in the chicken coup for them to enjoy.  Your welcome, by the way." "Well, just as I was finishing, I heard a 'er-er-reh-ah', and my paper turned into o paper figure.  Then there was a 'er-er-er-ee', and it transformed into a paper airplane and flew out the window!  The last thing I saw was a Decepticon insignia on the back.  I'd watch out.  It's a new era of Decepticons!" "My cat ate it, horked it up, and told me to clean it up.  I've got it in a plastic baggy, if you still want it." "Four penguins came into my room, took it, and told me they needed it for a top secret mission.  The leader told me 'You didn't see anything!'.  I assure you, it's being put to good use." "I was doing this outside, when this little green block-thing came up, looked at me, screamed, then blew up.  It's all ash now, so it's useless, so, I drew a picture of a creeper instead!" Teachers, parents, educators: Where do you stumble?

Hello Instructables! I currently run a small business in which company teachers travel to local elementary schools and teach project based engineering. For us, it's second nature. But I recently learned that it's not always so easy to implement project-based learning in the home or at school. What are you challenges in this arena? Is it getting the right materials? When you have published your project to the Sponsor Site, if you have reviewed the entry requirements for the Contest, believe your project qualifies for entry, and want to enter it in the Contest, leave a comment on the Contest page, and include a link to your published Instructable. Instructable must be published during the Contest period. You may not enter the same Instructables project in more than three (3) Instructables contests in total. Projects published prior to the Start Date are not eligible for entry. You may not register the same Instructables project in more than three (3) Instructables contests in total. As a university teacher, can I create a contest to my students? Answered

I am trying to teach to my design students the power of collaboration and crowdsourcing in design. To this, I am thinking to create a contest to these students create and share their ideas to the public and discuss. Is there any possibility to create a contest, or a group, to my students submit the ideas? Thanks!

Teaching Middle School Through Instructables

I am a junior high math and shop/technology teacher. For years I have been wanting to develop a math program that uses as much hands on as possible.  Like all teachers, I have developed a few projects, but just don't have the time to develop all the activities needed to cover an entire curriculum. Design Your Own Electronics Kits

If you teach electronics to groups, finding all the parts you need can be a drag. Organizing those parts once you receive them? Even draggier. Asking students to buy the materials? The draggiest. It looks like Jameco is making it a little bit easier to source and organize educational kits. Just browse their site, add kit components to your cart, provide some basic info about your school, and either you or your students can purchase the kits from the Jameco site. They'll even include the course number and an educational discount for you or your students. Here's the text from the announcement: While we've always offered educational discounts, we're excited to announce a new program to allow you to design your own electronic kit. Whether you want to create your own grab bag of components or design a step-by-step project, Jameco will source it, build it and sell it offering students an educational discount and educators a royalty on every kit sold. Hello! My science teacher and I are having a fight in class about whether you can spray paint a motion sensor or not and that if that will cover it or set it off. Also any other ways to block/not set off a motion sensor while walking past it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Duck Scooter

This duck was born without being able to walk on its own. A teacher and her kids came up with a way for the duck to get around anyway with its own scooter. It now lives with the teacher and goes to class every day.Reminds me a lot of the Dachshund wheelchair. Linkvia Neatorama

I am in need of some demonstrations which can be made from old bike parts. Or, neat things to enhance my classroom would work as well (gear clocks which rotate, etc).

High school teacher, new to wireless connections, looking to make a classroom app.

I'm looking to create a classroom app that will require some hardware creation as well. I'm hoping to take data from multiple of the same apps from each student's smartphone, and have a "teacher" app which receives that information and displays it in real-time, probably on a tablet or computer. I have a few questions to get started, as I am starting from about as square one as anyone could start.1) I'm envisioning a bluetooth connection, as I would love for the information to be sent from various student smartphones to a tablet device controlled by the teacher. What is the maximum number of bluetooth connections one device could receive data from at the same time? If the number is smaller than your standard high school classroom size, is there any way to get there?2) If bluetooth is limited to a small number of connections, is there an alternative wireless method that could work?Thank you in advance for the help, I look forward to getting started on this and putting my education experience to go above and beyond to help out in the classroom!

High school students' lack of knowledge regarding 3D printers.

Has anyone else come upon the severe lack of knowledge about 3D printers by high school students, and possibly people in general as well? Today, my teacher announced to my art class that: "Some architects will be coming in to show us their 3D printer that they built". Then, practically every student started to say things such as: "what the hell is that?". The teacher then said that: "it's like a printer, but it prints things out in 3D". After that, one student asked: "so it like prints stuff out on paper in 3D?" So the teacher replied: "no, it prints objects out in 3D". Then, the same student asked again: "so it prints stuff out onto paper in 3D.....?". It went on like this for about 5 minutes, until the teacher got tired of explaining from her limited knowledge of 3D printers. After the teacher managed to end the conversation, I heard murmurs from the others saying things like: "I don't get it..?" and "That doesn't make any sense..". Has anyone else encountered this? (not that I'm an expert on 3D printers or anything..) Thanks -Me
