Circus Tent

Greetings again, Sorry I didn't photograph all I went through to create this miniature circus tent that is my stage for a movie I'm making. It was a difficult project as i work without any idea of how it would work. I just knew that I wanted it to look like what one would think a circus tent would look like. I can give descriptions of how I made it: The tent material is kite fabric that I bought online from kitebuilders.com. I also bought two rolls of double face tape from them. There is the cheap one that worked great for piecing the tent pieces together and one that costs about $16 that I used to add in the roping that ties fabric to the tent poles. For the tent main support poles I bought 2 3' pieces of 1/2" aluminum from Home Despot. Here's how it went together: I made two semi-circle pieces out of triangle pieces of red and yellow fabric. The main tent poles are embedded in a 1" piece of flake board. In order to hold up the tent while I pieced other parts to it I made two circles of 1/4" board with 1/2" holes drilled so they would slip over the aluminum pole and held them up with clamps until I got them to the proper height. The tent towers cam next. These were made with smaller triangle pieces to make a full circle. As the top of the tower would be holding up the entire structure so I used a 2" metal ring at the top. To attach I cut slices at the top and folded them over ring and used the double face tape to secure. So now I've got the two ends of the tent and the two towers but nothing is holding them together. And there is still the center section that has to be made. My next step was to add tent poles at the corners and other strategic positions. I jury rigged all connections with paper clamps, tape and what ever else I could thing of to hold the thing together long enough to force fit. From here I did a rough markup of where I thought the tie down roping should be. I then used some cotton rope (3/16" approx). Once again, simple slices in fabric turned under and held together with dbl face tape worked. I must say I worked through three different ways of doing this until I got something that worked. I left a lot of extra rope between the arcs so I could attach to the tent poles. These poles are just pieces of 5/8" dowels. The towers and the main tent pieces were also connected with dbl face tape. I made two circle frames out of 1/16" steel cable (@ 10 cents a foot) and used a swedge connector on each. This gave me a way to alternate tower and main connections that pull against the cable and not the fabric. Worked great. The last part was to fabricate pieces to add between the towers to complete the tent. You will notice that one side is completely open. That's were I will film from. The last thing I added was a large lazy-susan bearing so the entire stage can revolve as needed. I have also created a stage that fits inside the tent. And, lighting and back drops. I'll show those at a later date. There will be a YouTube video in a few days. I'm editing it right now.

Pop-up tents

Has anyone ever made or taken apart a pop-up tent or hamper or whatnot? I really would like to know what kind of wire they use and how they do it. I think it would make for some interesting and versatile set pieces.I'm thinking along the lines of this type of thing.

Reuse parts of an old tent? Answered

I have a basic 3 person dome tent from canadian tire that i have no use for. It has got the tent, the rain fly, pegs ...everything. I have a nicer one now and before i give it away, i was thinking if there is any way parts of this can be reused in any way? the rain fly is waterproof...so maybe a waterproof bag....and what about the real tent? I always thought that when the ground is wet, it helps to put something on the ground before you pitch your tent so that the base does not get cold and wet. Is there a way some kind of eater/heat insulator can be made out of the old tent?

How to heat a tent- safely?

While I am a a hands-on person, that mostly extends to art and sculpture rather than engineering. Therefore, I thought I ought to bring this question to people with a little bit more knowhow in that area. See, with the cold winter months coming on camping is becoming a little more arduous. More to the point, heating a tent safely is a real problem. I don't trust gas powered heaters....but there's not a whole lot of alternatives out there. So I was wondering if anyone here could think of a way to safely heat a tent for a prolonged period of time. Preferably without gas, electricity, or risk of fire.

Hi there all you outdoorsmen and woman, just join this group and would like to find out if you have any tips on how to keep a tent (in my case a frame tent) from blowing away in windy conditions. I am mad about fishing, usually go fishing on weekends (Free State, South Africa), and had my problems with the wind blowing my tent down, hope you can assist and give me some tips. Regards Werner

Wood-framed mesh "tent" to grow strawberries; How-tos needed!

Hello, I'm looking for some help in constructing a wood-framed mesh "tent" to grow strawberries. The strawberries are visible through the screen that's stapled to the wood frame in a tent shape. It looks like you can lift off the triangular "roof" to collect strawberries, prune, etc. Just saw this in a Sunset Magazine ( February 2009 issue, page 32G) as well as in someone's backyard during a garden tour this spring. It looks like it would keep the berries protected from predators. Does anyone know how to make such a thing? Thanks!

tincloth?

If the oil/wax mixture was applied as, waterproofing for a permanent exterior canvas surface (large tent), would the summer heat, up to 40+ degrees destroy the finish and need to be re-applied every winter? also any other ideas would be greatly appreciated, I thought oil based paint would become brittle, and im not sure if I can thin silicone to apply with a roller, someone mentioned shellac but I read that it is no good outside, and as I have quite a large area and many tents to do, any ideas thanks.

Temporary Tent life - Where in Hesperia/Apple Valley Ca can this be done?

Hi folks, I came across a similar question on this site, but the answers were for a different state so I hope this is ok. Me, my mom and a couple others (and pets) have been in a motel for nearly a month and it's way too expensive (running over the $5000 a month mark and this is as cheap as it comes for all of us). 3 rooms. Contemplating on living in a tent, preferably in the wilds somewhere here in the high desert (Hesperia or Apple Valley CA). Some of us may go to the camp grounds (narrows), but those of us with the kitty cats prefer to go out into the desert if possible. Mind you, this is only temporary (as long as we can hold out). If you guys out there know of a good spot that's unclaimed (and legal?? is there such a thing?) please let me know :)  Wilds would be free, however we still have access to toiletry/shower through friends. Long story short, the family was scammed by a realty company and now we're out of our house. To stay afloat, we tried AmericanHomes4Rent to get a temporary rental, but that didn't work out, so we're in the hotel. In fact, a house was readily available for us to rent, application OKd, but at the last second the above company said that there was a glitch in their system and the house was not available for rent.  (BS.. we went to see the place, rental sign, lock box etc.. RENTLY has a let yourself in service which we used to check it out). This has to be voodoo or something... I dunno... bad luck one thing after another. The plan is to save enough money to convince one of these rental companies to let us in  (3 or 4 months rent in advance). That worked for several folks I know, so hope to try the same :) PS - A shelter is out of the question. Not only are they full (went to inquire at the one up here), some of the folks there were wielding pocket knives and someone got into a fight.  Yikes. No way!  Tent it is!!!

How can I project a night sky on a tent ceiling?

I'm getting married in September and I want a night sky projected on the tent at my wedding. I love the images from Harry Potter in the Great Hall (I know that it won't look exactly like it because of the tent angles). The tent is a 40'X40' open sided. I only care that the upper half is projected. The bottom edge surrounding the tent is going to have string lights wrapped in grapevines possibly with wisteria and amaranthus hanging from it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work, and how to rig the projectors to the tent ceiling poles?

What sturdy pipe is best for tent poles? Answered

I'm trying to build one of those old fashioned military style tents at a reasonable price.  I already have a bunch of recycled canvas for the walls but I don't know what kind of tent poles to use.  I think PVC is too flimsy and unstable, I'm not sure about electrical conduit because it isn't rated to withstand a lot of pressure but it is cheep, aluminum tubing is expensive but lightweight. Any Ideas?

How to make privacy tent/curtain for twin sized bed?

I'm on the Disney College Program and I have 5 flatmates and I'm sharing a room with 2 other girls. I need some privacy. The girl who got the bottom bunk was able to put up blankets around to make her own little place and the girl on the top bunk is pretty hidden away. My bed is the twin sized bed next to the window in the corner. The bed is in the corner with the head of the bed against one wall and the left side against the other wall. I can usually figure out a lot of DIY's but this one is tricky. I can't put any holes in the walls. At. All. So no screws, nothing that is going to leave permanent marks or mess up the paint. I looked in to those prop up bed tent tings but the ones geared for dorm rooms are $120. Nope. Not happening. I even thought about getting one of the pop up bed tents for kids. I don't care about the design so long as there was a way I could have some privacy. I get mixed reviews on whether someone of about 5'2" could sleep in one. I was thinking I could put the huge command hooks (already looked into it, these are approved by housing) in sideways on the two walls, add some type of dowel/rod to the bottom right of the bed. From there I could put some type of cord, or dowel, in between and hand hang some type of dark fabric from it. Thoughts????

Shade options for a casual, outdoor wedding? Easy to put up/take down? Fairly cheap? Attractive? Impossible?

Hi- I'm trying to figure out our shade options for a casual wedding. I'm hoping to find something fairly cheap, easy to build/take down, and made with reusable materials. Am I dreaming? We have tools and the like, but the solution has to be pretty easy. The event will be stressful enough. There might be a breeze (probably not too heavy) and it has to look okay for the older and more judgemental guests. Preferably it would fit 10 chairs and a couple of small tables. Do you have any good diy links? Vendors for parachute material? Thanks in advance!

Mounting a blade sign to a tent pole—best methods?

Hi there! I'm doing deco for a large event where there will be a line of vendors in pole tents—the kind you typically see at festivals and fairs, with a white top and stuff. I want to see if it's doable to have blade signs hanging for each vendor, mounted to one of the frame poles of the tent. The signs' construction is variable depending on the mounting methodology, I'm thinking the more lightweight the better. One method I was thinking about would be using zip ties to snugly attach a 90 degree bracket to the tent frame pole and hang the sign from the perpendicular arm, but I don't know if zip ties would be sturdy enough. These don't have to withstand a hurricane but do need to be sturdy enough to withstand the occasional nudge or shake by workers/drunk people. I should also emphasize that the tents will be rented, so no permanent alterations can be done (i.e. no soldering brackets to tent frames...) Thoughts/suggestions/possible drawbacks? THANK YOU

Sydney Opera House on wheels!

I live in a semi-rural area.  We are hours from a decent motorway, but hip-deep in caravan parks. Given the UK law that limits trailers to 50mph, I am generally disapproving of anything towed. However, this trailer tent designed by Axel Enthoven is a thing of beauty and luxury. The Opera trailer tent has features including central heating, teak flooring (and a veranda!), ceramic toilet, electrically adjustable twin beds (which can be joined into a double), kitchen sink (of course), onboard water boiler (which supplies a fountain?), fridge and low-energy LED lighting “from awning to floor” (yes there are uplights!). Unfortunately, beauty has a price - €24,000 puts it in the price-range of campers with engines and no restriction to 50mph... Your Suite in Nature via Notcot.

while making a tent like shelter systems how to decide the position joints in space where the two poles will intersect?

I have several other questions in mind... 1. since the PVC conduits are bent during the process of building tents, some bending stresses will be induced..how do we ensure that the structure won't fail? 2. Can someone suggest some modification in shelter systems dome design to make it more stable but not adding much complexity and not adding much assembly time? 3.Can someone give a construction plan of a dome similar to shelter systems, different pipe sizes and position of joints??

Where can I buy cheap land and legally live in a tent or yurt full-time?

I was wondering if anyone knew of a state or town in the US where I could buy a small, cheap piece of land and legally live in a tent or a yurt full-time? I really didnt even know where to begin looking for advice on this....So Im hoping some awesome person on this website will have ideas. These are the things I am more specifically looking for: I would like to move to an area that doesn't get much (if any) snow. I would like to buy no more then about 5 acres in the woods somewhere, and do NOT need utilities or buildings, and I would be fine living on logged land and possibly "problem land". The land would have to have access by road...And preferably no further then 30-40 minutes from a town. Oh, and I won't live in Florida. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know! Thank you!! Ryan

Where, in the US, could a person get away with living in a large tent for free? Answered

I am looking for ideas (of ANY kind) on where in the U.S. I could live (FULL -TIME) in a decent size tent FOR FREE. Is there land that I can live on for free in my tent?? I would like to stay in areas where it doesnt get too cold year round, and doesn't snow at all....But that isn't "set in stone". I really would like to just get away from the crazy, busy city and all that comes with it...And I want to live as free as possible. And by "free", I mean I would like to live rent free outdoors. Once I am able to do that, I think I will feel more free as a human being. :) Thank you for any ideas or suggestions!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~NEWLY ADDED TO THIS TOPIC FROM AUTHOR:~~~~~~~~~~~ I also posted this in reply to someone's message to me on this site...But I wanted to make sure everyone else read this too because it gives more info on what I am trying to do: This is just gonna sound crazy...But I have 2 cats that I will be bringing with me on the road. I refuse to leave them behind cuz they have been with me through a lot of things in my life, and they are like my kids now! lol! So I have to make sure they have a living space to run around in and get proper excersize (hence, why I am choosing to live in a large canvas tent that will be about the same size as my studio apt that I currently live in). I am choosing to live in a canvas tent because I believe that it will be the CHEAPEST, safest, sturdiest, large enough structure for me and the "kids" to live in for a while. I am also planning on buying a van to travel in for this adventure. I think it will be the easiest and CHEAPEST way to transport me, my cats, and the large canvas tent to where I want to go.
