Flame-throwing scooter

Gotta love this so-not-street-legal mod to a scooter that shoots 15-foot flames out the back. Just a push of the button and WHOOSH! The creator, Colin Furze, can even change the angle if he wanted to. Aside from being illegal to use the biggest downside is that the flames can come back at him if he isn't careful. Wheels on fire! Where can I get a giant electrical throw switch?

Hey.  I need to find a giant switch (1-3 feet?) that I can install for a mostly decorative purpose, but I have no idea how to find something like this, or what it would be called.   We're redoing part of the office at work (small web dev company) and rather than hide the breaker box, we want to embellish it.  One guy is going to put in a led panel that shows the status of each site we run.  I suggested we also put in a huge throw switch that is labeled 'Interwebs: on/off'.  Boss likes it, and tasked me with finding such a thing.   Ideas?

Never throw snowballs at a hummer...

Around 200 people in Washington DC got a shock after a maroon hummer got caught in the cross-fire of a friendly snowball fight. The driver got out and pulled a gun. The driver was a cop... The cop, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, was later filmed admitting the over-zealous action, saying: "I did it because I got hit with snowballs." Assistant Chief Pete Newsham said: "We have to see what the entire circumstance was. But just a snowball fight, not in my mind, that doesn't seem a situation where we would pull out a service weapon." The officer has been placed on desk duty pending the results of an investigation, which could be finished in as quickly as "weeks". Australian "Throw Out Week" FREE Electronics a plenty!! Some suggestions please.

Here in Sydney Australia we are having our 6 monthly "throw out week". This is a kerbside pickup of hard rubbish. They often include electronics and the like. Tonight I plan on going out to "collect" some useful items. Just picked this little item up on a walk home, in case with a new set of batteries inside. Last clean up I found a brand new digital camera working in box with all accessories... Can anyone think of something to make with it? I plan on posting more objects tonight.

LED reflectors? Answered

Why don't they make LEDs without the reflectors? I find that LEDs don't throw their light very far (it spreads out quickly) and even if you were to put them in a torch, the majority of the light would go out of the torch and spread then, making the reflector quite useless.

Question by .Unknown.    |  last reply

LED vs Incandescent?

Is it just me, or do incandescent torches generally have more throw than LED ones with the same power?             P.S : I recently found a 3V, 0.3A xenon torch globe. Would you say that it would be brighter than a 2.4V 0.7A torch globe if they are both run off 2 AA batteries?

Incandescent to LED torch mod? Answered

All the LEDs I have seem to have not so good throw. (Even my 3 watt luxeon is outmatched in throw by a 1.2-ish watt incandescent  torch), so I was wondering how I coud increase an LED's throw. I noticed that the light from the globe was not very bright, but seeing as how it throws light in all different directions, it probably gave off just as much, if not more, light; probably why the reflector was there. So I figured that if I got a bunch of LEDs, then put them into a torch, pointing them to the side at the reflector, the throw of the light would be greater than if I just pointed the LEDs forward, right?

Dell indicator light? Don't throw it out!

I'm working on a project that will become an 'ible when it's done, and I need a little help from fellow sysadmins. If you come across a Dell-server indicator light, please don't throw it out! Send it to me instead! See, Dell servers all come with an indicator light on a cable (it's really just a blue LED connected to a 4 foot cable, and it ends with very thin barrel plug). The light is intended to be plugged into the server, then clipped to the side of the rack, so you can see if a server is off or on without looking at the back or front of it. Nobody ever uses the light as far as I can tell. Where I work, we generally throw them out. I've been collecting all the ones that I come across for awhile now, and have only gotten together 16. The project I have in mind needs at least 60. You can think of sending them to me as recycling :) Thanks --Kyle

LED torch lens?

I have this LED torch, a luxeon 'MXDL' (next to a AA battery in the photo). It's a 3 watt LED torch (supposedly) running on a AAA battery connected to a joule thief of some sort (it has some sort of transistor, a capacitor, and an inductor), but it isn't that bright,( being about the same as a 3 5mm LED torch which has these lenses), but I still like it because of its compact size and light output. Anyhow, its throw is kinda poor, and I was wondering whether I could put a cheap lens onto it (from out of, say a camera's lens) to increase throw. Would it work? How would I go about it? P.S: I found these AAA li-ion batteries online, but I didn't even know that those batteries existed. If I put one of them into my torch, they'd probably increase brightness a lot, but because they are only rated at 300mah, I really doubt if it would be worth buying them. What do you think?

Sometimes you have to throw out the wheat with the chaff

I like slideshows, I know not everyone does, meh. I love instructables, with text and pictures, and the occasional video demonstrating the item. But the videos, oh dear Ghod, the videos. I don't really like the videos, but when these metacafe people carpet bomb the front page with a dozen videos, I want to punch them in the groin. So, nope, never, ever gonna look at another video again, don't care if you invented a space drive, and brought back a freaking green skinned alien babe with two navels, not gonna watch it. That's all, I feel better.

Short throw projector w/ auto pwr on/off

OK- looking to upgrade an exhibit that is currently using two old kodak slide projectors on an image blender to a screen that is only about 5' from the lenses. This is a rear projection scenario and I need the following criteria met: Projector must be capable of throwing up a 62" diagonal image from only about 5', maybe a few inches less. The projector must be able to be programmed to turn on (main and lamp power) and off at certain times. Whether this is done via the firmware (menu settings) in the projector itself or via RS232 commands is up to you but I don't know much about RS232 software and its capabilities as far as interfacing with a projector. I think there might be some projectors out there that automatically power on when a source is detected as well, perhaps this is part of a solution?? The application is as an exhibit in a museum. We can't afford to task someone with physically turning this on and off every day so if the process can be automated, great. This exhibit will ideally rear project an image to a screen that our visitors stand in front of. The image can be supplied by either a looping DVD or from a PC app such as Powerpoint as they are static images. One concern at power off is that power is initially only removed from the lamp of the projector and then from the fan after it has cooled the lamp sufficiently. If all power is removed from the projector at once, the fan will not run and the lamp will fail prematurely. If there are solutions outside of the box like other display technologies that I've not thought of, please share. Large plasma and / or LCD screens of that size however are cost prohibitive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. z

Stop and Go

This is a pretty easy trick. I will tell you that it does not look cool, but it does come in handy. See, stop and go is a trick where the yo-yo literally stops, then starts sleeping again. This comes in handy if you are in a tournament and your yo-yo's sleep is about to die. First, get into a brain twister mount:Throw a strong sleeper. Point the index finger of your non-throw hand out and bring the yo-yo up. Now move your throw hand under the yo-yo and up again on the other side.*For more detailed instructions, go ahead and surf the web*The trick itselfOkay, now that you are in the brain twister mount, bring your throw hand up and under your non-throw hand so it forms a sort of cup. Now move your hands up a bit and the yo-yo will come up to your hand. Be prepared to catch it. This is the "stop" part of the trick "stop and go". Now for the "go" part. Bring your throw hand under the yoyo and twist it so your fingers point away from you. Now pull your throw hand down and leave your non-throw hand where it is. The yo-yo should start spinning again and you are ready for more tricks.

What kind of switch to operate and bypass motion sensor security light?

I would like to be able to manually operate the light for when I need it to stay on continuously, and then have it operate on the motion sensor when I am away from it. Basically I have a motion sensor light mounted above the entrance to my shed/ workshop, and sometimes I need to set up my sawhorses outside of the shop to do work at night and the light is sufficient, but when I have been still too long, perhaps doing some figuring or whatever, it goes out. I don't want to have to continue to wave my hands about to get it to come on every time it goes off. Do I need a double pole single throw switch, or a single pole double throw, or what(is a three way light switch a SPDT- [single pole double throw] switch)? Is there a way to wire it to a single switch where I could flip it over to one side to operate continuously, and then flip the switch to make the light work off of the motion sensor when I have gone in for the night? Please forgive the ignorance. I just can't envision it in my head. Thanks.

Having issues with my boomerang?

This is my boomerang I made out of some plywood I had. I have sanded down the wings so they have the airfoil shape. When ever I throw it, it goes out, starts to loop around, and seems like its coming back but falls before it gets too close. The closest ive ever got it is about 30ft out to my left. To throw it i hold it like a gun, point it away from, tilt it a little to the right and throw it. Is there something wrong with my technique? Could the problem have anything to do with the shape of the airfoil on my wings? Or maybe there is a better desgin I could use to get to learn?

SEW DIFFERENCE! How to transform throw-away T-shirt into a wave of T-shirt?

It's difficult for me to throw away my T-shirt, they like my friends, we do have deep feelings with each other. So I decide to transform them, to give new life to them.  Here are what I tried. Actually, I do like sewing things in my daily life:). I share a brief recipe at Instructables. You can review https://www.instructables.com/id/Minimal-Crossover-Vintage-style-Camisole/. Basically, I just have fun. However, more and more people were attracted and give me suggestions on how to design better, which inspire me to redesign more creative cloth.  In addition, I encourage everyone to redesign their own thing but not throw them away, because the things you used in your daily life  stands for your emotions in that stage, it's your life and your own thing. We can transform them or send someone who need it. Hopefully, DIY makes things different and make you different.

Boing-E-Boing

Boing-E-Boing is a cool trick for the yo-yo. It is fairly simple, but still looks very amazing. First, go into a split bottom mount. To do this, throw a sleeper and go into a brain twister mount, but instead of bringing you throw hand under the yo-yo, swing the yo-yo over your index finger of your throw hand and it lands on the string. That is a split bottom mount. After the split bottom mount is in place, pass the yo-yo forward once by switching your arms. Now the yo-yo is in the middle of two strings. Move your index finger at the top up and down. Watch as the yo-yo bounces between the two strings because it has nowhere else to go!
