How do I replant tomatoes without killing them? Answered

The instructions that came with the tomato kit said to plant *all* of the seeds, so I did.  I didn't expect all of them to grow.  So now I have a basket that's now overflowing with cherry tomato sprouts, and I'm worried they're too crammed in there. I'm also worried that if I try to transplant them to another container, they'll die! What do I do?

How can I hybridize tomatoes? Answered

I am trying to make a "super tomato" that grows fast with large sweet juicy fruit, and is a hybrid of a roma, big boy, and early girl (Also possibly a siberian tomato) I think I should cross pollinate the roma and big boy and then hybridize the seed from the hybridization with the early girl but I'm not positive someone please tell me how to do this.

How do I protect against tomato blight next summer after terrible problems this year?

All my tomatoes have black spots?!? Answered

So I just started my own small garden this year. It's ontop of where we used to have our chicken run, so there are alot of volunteer tomatoes from the scraps we fed our chickens. I have about 3 tomato plants (which are all massive) and an eggplant. The eggplant is doing well as are the volunteers, and the one tomato I planted.  However tomatos on the one I planted (I believe it was Better Boy or Big Boy) all have large black/brown bruises/spots on the bottom. I tried eating one, and discovered it goes a part way into the tomato as well. How can I combat this? Especially naturally or organically. Is it to late to do anything?  Thanks!

Do you mix oranges and tomatoes in the same recipe? How?

How do you mix oranges and tomatoes (if at all)? Any favorite ingredient combinations with these two? I'm working on cold salads, and these two seem to clash a lot when mixed with other ingredients. Thanks, everyone :)

Can I grow tomatoes (and other vegetables) in part shade (4-5 hours)?

I've recently moved into a new house (I'm not telling you where) and the backyard only receives 4-5 hours of sunshine per day. I'm wondering if my vegetables requiring full sun will still grow? I'm tired of seeing the same old "it must have at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day" . If this is still not possible then I will consider a hydroponic system with growth lights under my stairs... I was always interested in hydroponics ever since I saw an advertisement for the AeroGarden, but I never actually tried to build a system and I definitely can't afford one.

Need a homemade Catsup recipe! Anyone got one?

Can't find my homemade CATSUP recipe! Anyone got one? I had altered one from a cookbook years ago. I substituted honey for the sugar and some type of canned tomato sauce and or paste for the tomato juice. But it is hiding somewhere, I will probably find it when I don't want it! As Vincent Price said in the "Fly" Help Me !

Scholarship Robot Proposal: Garden Bot

Right now, my wife and I have a small garden(5'x7' if that). We have had good success at growing tomatoes so far. None of them have started to ripening so this would be a good test environment. The main idea would be to come up with a way to have the robot pick the tomatoes. One idea is to have a camera positioned on the tomato plants. The camera relays the information to a PC that does the visual processing. The PC sends general coordinates to the robot and the robot picks the fruit (tomatoes are really fruit). if the visual processing is not feasibility in the time frame available. The robot could water the plants at a certain time and a variable amount of water per plant. I have a couple of arduinos that can be used to aid in the functionality of the robot. If the arduino zigbee unit comes out it would be cool to use that as well.

What is the best manufactured hydroponic system for amaeturs?

I'm interested in trying hydroponics to grow some tomatoes and peppers but no absolutely nothing about it. I'd like to start out with a manufactured system first to see if it's something I really want to pursue. I've spent hours trying to figure out who has the best system for a reasonable price. Any suggestions? Thanks.

What kind of hot sauce is this? Answered

I'm wondering what the name of a certain hot sauce is. It's very, very hot (and I love hot, but this is crazy), and I only ever seen it in Mexico and the Dominican Republic (once at a buffet, and also on an excursion in the jungle). I think it's a kind of salsa, but green. And it's definitely home-made. It's kind of runny too. What would this be called? Is it just green salsa? Thanks, josh1324

Does anybody know where to buy whole dodder seed that will germinate?

I need to buy dodder seed to study the effects of different chemicals on the way it grows.  Unfortunately it is illegal to sell whole dodder seed in the U.S.A. due to the fact that it is a noxious weed.
