I am trying to make a "super tomato" that grows fast with large sweet juicy fruit, and is a hybrid of a roma, big boy, and early girl (Also possibly a siberian tomato) I think I should cross pollinate the roma and big boy and then hybridize the seed from the hybridization with the early girl but I'm not positive someone please tell me how to do this.

What is the best manufactured hydroponic system for amaeturs?

I'm interested in trying hydroponics to grow some tomatoes and peppers but no absolutely nothing about it. I'd like to start out with a manufactured system first to see if it's something I really want to pursue. I've spent hours trying to figure out who has the best system for a reasonable price. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Visit My Vegetable Garden Blog While I Build a few Instructables

I just discovered Instructables. I am working on my first one called How to Grow Large Tomatoes in Containers. I am surprised there is no Gardening Forum (HINT). Anyway it is my passion and hobby. I hope to find other gardeners. Please visit me at The Rusted Vegetable Garden. I hope to bring a bunch of my blog to some simple step instructables. I like the use of pictures as a way to teach. I also started using videos and that is what the above Instructable will have. Thanks Gary

All my tomatoes have black spots?!? Answered

So I just started my own small garden this year. It's ontop of where we used to have our chicken run, so there are alot of volunteer tomatoes from the scraps we fed our chickens. I have about 3 tomato plants (which are all massive) and an eggplant. The eggplant is doing well as are the volunteers, and the one tomato I planted.  However tomatos on the one I planted (I believe it was Better Boy or Big Boy) all have large black/brown bruises/spots on the bottom. I tried eating one, and discovered it goes a part way into the tomato as well. How can I combat this? Especially naturally or organically. Is it to late to do anything?  Thanks!

How do I replant tomatoes without killing them? Answered

The instructions that came with the tomato kit said to plant *all* of the seeds, so I did.  I didn't expect all of them to grow.  So now I have a basket that's now overflowing with cherry tomato sprouts, and I'm worried they're too crammed in there. I'm also worried that if I try to transplant them to another container, they'll die! What do I do?

Top plants for home garden to be used in cooking? Answered

I was curious about what are some of the best plants for my backyard garden. I want to be able to use these plants in my cooking. So far I know that strawberries and tomatoes and cilantro are going in. Maybe some common herbs will add to the variety. I am a southern California residence and the area is shaded by two palm trees. The temperature range is very mild with few extremes and the soil is of mediocre quality. I just need some direction as to what else is available and what I would most commonly need for my cooking. Thank you,

How do I protect against tomato blight next summer after terrible problems this year?

Plastic buckets - safe for food storage?

If a retail store's 5-, 6-, 7-gallon plastic buckets are made from HDPE (high density polyethylene), will they be safe for storing flour, sugar, honey, etc., and for growing vegetables such as tomatoes? Or, would buckets made from other kinds of plastics such as PET, PETE, or PP be safer for food storage? While shopping on the Internet, manufacturers' literature's for HDPE buckets say the items "meets FDA requirements." What exactly are the FDA's requirements with regards to HDPE-made buckets? I have asked a manufacturer, and searched the FDA's Web site http://www.fda.gov/default.htm for an explanation without success.

Aeroponics

I hope my mom doesn't see this, its going to be her birthday gift hopefully ;D. I was looking around instructables for good projects for my garden-loving and food-growing mom, and noticed several hydroponic systems. They all looked nice, but I noticed one thing: they all used the nutrient-film or submerged plant technique. I'm no expert, but this seemed bad for the roots. Rot, anyone? I recalled a system I had seen at Walt Disney World in the distant past (OK, 4 years ago :P), where plants roots passed through a nutrient-laden mist. This seemed a better solution to me, allowing the best nature of hydroponics to take root (no pun intended lol): supplying the roots with nutrients while allowing them to breathe and supporting them. I thought about how to create the mist and it hit me: a hose sprayer. Most sprayers nowadays come with an adjuster nozzle to change the flow, so if one were to move it to "mist" position, tape down the handle and attach it to a large submersible pump on a timer, you have a cheap aeroponics system. I'll be writing an instructable when I can, so stay tuned for updates.

Scholarship Robot Proposal: Garden Bot

Right now, my wife and I have a small garden(5'x7' if that). We have had good success at growing tomatoes so far. None of them have started to ripening so this would be a good test environment. The main idea would be to come up with a way to have the robot pick the tomatoes. One idea is to have a camera positioned on the tomato plants. The camera relays the information to a PC that does the visual processing. The PC sends general coordinates to the robot and the robot picks the fruit (tomatoes are really fruit). if the visual processing is not feasibility in the time frame available. The robot could water the plants at a certain time and a variable amount of water per plant. I have a couple of arduinos that can be used to aid in the functionality of the robot. If the arduino zigbee unit comes out it would be cool to use that as well.

what should i use to cover the holes on a plastic delivery box . i want to use it as a tomatoe planter.

Converting a plastic 14inx14inchx14 inch (approx) milkbox to a tomato planter, what should i line the milkbox sides with? it is the type that stores used to get their deiveries in, i will will be using it outside on the ground so i think i could fill the bottow with small stones to act as drainage and give it weight to avoid windstorm tipovers? would dupont tyvek work for this? i dont have accees to it it yet, unless i come across some used post office supplies.

Can I grow tomatoes (and other vegetables) in part shade (4-5 hours)?

I've recently moved into a new house (I'm not telling you where) and the backyard only receives 4-5 hours of sunshine per day. I'm wondering if my vegetables requiring full sun will still grow? I'm tired of seeing the same old "it must have at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day" . If this is still not possible then I will consider a hydroponic system with growth lights under my stairs... I was always interested in hydroponics ever since I saw an advertisement for the AeroGarden, but I never actually tried to build a system and I definitely can't afford one.
