Bumped Topics

I (along with other members of the Instructables Community) have noticed a problem with bumped topics. Topics that were originally posted over 2 years ago are being bumped to the top of the forums. In most cases this is due to comments that don't even contribute to the conversation. What solutions are there to this problem? I don't like the idea of locking topics. This puts a stop to contributions that might actually be useful. What solutions do you guys have?

"Boy's Life" Archives

http://boyslife.org/wayback/ I most remember "scouts in action" these were cautionary tales, as well as how to get yourself or a stranger out of a tight spot. They seem to be about page 45 to 65. Common topics: "trapped in quicksand" or " when the cave collapsed" or "the chemistry set explosive went off in his hand!!" But there was so much more, like how to make stuff with sticks, rope and knots. So much of my kidhood was howto based on scout stuff. I'm tryin to figure out how to paste  pics from the mag at the above link.

National Archives: What, Me Worry? by Jason Perlow

" While many of you this weekend were firing up your barbecues, cooking grilled meats and drinking chilled beers, you might have missed a small announcement that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) made last Thursday having to do with a eensy, weensy, rather trivial data loss --- it managed to misplace a TWO TERABYTE EXTERNAL STORAGE SYSTEM containing confidential information from the White House during the Clinton administration. My purple and black with white contrast-stitching custom Converse shoes showed up yesterday. Check them out as I try out my new treadmill desk (Instructable forthcoming...). Converse is an advertiser on Instructables, but I thought the custom shoes were cool enough (and actually the creative on their ads, too) that I bought a pair irrespective of any business relationship.

Ask a Scientist [topic: ancient science]

Topic: The 2000-Year-Old Computer (and Other Achievements of Ancient Science)We learn in school that the science of our ancestors included such endearing bunk as flat planets, geocentric solar systems, and the balancing of the body's four humors. (Even the pre-internet decades of my youth now seem to me like a dark, distant era of ignorance that I can't believe we all survived.) Did our ancient predecessors get anything right? Of course they did. Tonight, science historian Richard Carrier will discuss the nature and limitations of ancient science. While crucial contributions have come from many different cultures throughout history, Richard will talk about a handful of Graeco-Roman scientific and technological advances that might surprise you. Here's a teaser: we'll learn about the Antikythera mechanism, the oldest known computer discovered in a 2000-year-old shipwreck near Crete (pictured below). Cool.ABOUT THE SERIES: Ask a Scientist is an informative, entertaining, casual science lecture series, held at a San Francisco cafe. Each event features a speaker on a current topic, a short presentation, and the opportunity to ask all those burning questions that have been keeping you up at night. DIY Office Chair Playseat Conversion?

Hi everyone, I've been looking to make something like this for a while now but have not come up with an idea of how to pull it off. I am a fan of flight/space simulators and have a Saitek X52 joystick (which is a two piece joystick for those who aren't familiar). I noticed a picture of the Playseat Office Chair with it's dual arm attachments and it seemed like the perfect compliment to my joystick. The issue is, the seats are horrendously expensive and way way outside my budget. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how I might be able to pull off a conversion of my current office chair to add arms like the playseat has. Here is a picture of the playseat: http://www.logitech.com/assets/27529/27529.png Please keep in mind that I do not have access to a welder so it would be difficult for me to make anything metal :( Thanks in advance for any advice! Tim's Cybot conversion to Arduino NANO

Hi all.I'm doing a new project.Dug out my Cybot. The one built on a fortnightly issue of Real Robots back in 2001.I decided to convert it to use the Arduino NANO. With Bluetooth and Infrared Control.I haven't finished it yet, so I haven't done an instruction here, I thought I would wait until I have finished the project before doing that. However, as it's quite a lengthy project, I have started a blog on my google+. Which I am updating as I progress with the project. Here is the link: Tim's Cybot conversion to Arduino NANO Blog. Before I started I had a search on the net to see if anyone else had done this, but all I found was basic stuff controlling the drive motors.Currently I have done a rough sketch (some fine tuning still needs to be done) for it that lets you:Control it via bluetooth,Set it in line follow mode,Set it in light follow mode,Set it in avoidance modeandControl it with an Infrared Remote.I'm sure there is still a lot of these Cybots out there, so i thought their may be some interest.

Anything to say about a paintball marker to airsoft sniper conversion?

I have designed, and will be converting a Tippmann 98 paintball marker into an Airsoft sniper rifle. I already made one, and it is accurate to about 250 feet, is the equivalent of a single shot bolt action rifle, and works quite well. That gun, however, is now with my friend, so I am going to make myself a better one, and give you an Instructable! The gun will probably be finished by sometime in February. In the interim, I will be posting a basic how-to on how to make the older version that my friend still has. I am basically making this topic to see what people have to say about this. Yes this is real, and will be made and detailed. Any questions? Comments? Criticism? Random outbursts? Bring it on!

Power 4 camera flashes with a battery 12vdc to 6vdc conversion

I would like to provide power to four camera flashes with a deep cycle battery. The flashes run off of 4 AA batteries (6VDC). Can I wire two flashes in series (6 volts each) and tie them directly into the battery? Or would I need to use a power transformer to step down the 12VDC to 6VDC, then have all four flashes running parallel to the battery? It appears that each flash needs about 3 amps to charge their capacitors. The battery I am using is 12VDC and 12 amps. Thanks

See What's Really Happening in Physics -- arXiv.org

If you are curious about what "real physicists" do, or what the current "hot topics" in research are, take a scan through the "recent postings" at the Physics Preprint Archive. Started for the High Energy Physics community in 1991 at Los Alamos National Lab under the name xxx.lanl.gov, and with a purely e-mail interface(!), arXiv moved to Cornell Univerisity with its creator in 2001.The archive includes preprints from all areas of physics research, not just HEP, as well as computer science, mathematics, and quantitative biology. "Preprints" are a way for the research community to get their results out for everyone to read, during the often lengthy period (months, sometimes!) between submission to a journal and actual publication. In many fields, it has been traditional for decades that printed copies of "preprints" were mailed out, sometimes in regular batches, between major University departments. That mechanism has been superseded almost exclusively by the arXiv database.Besides these traditional pre-publication journal articles, the archive also often includes conference proceedings, and submission of much older published papers of general interest to the community. There's also (usually in the general "physics" category) a scattering of crackpot nontraditional science papers.

Legality of putting airsoft gun into a real gun conversion kit??

Hey Instructables, I have a question about the legality of a project that I'm designing, as I don't want to make something illegal. As those who follow me on this site know, I play a lot of airsoft. I've recently been trying to design a new kind of airsoft rifle, and I would like a bullpup design (the magazine well is located behind the trigger to make a shorter gun). I was looking around on the net and I found this http://www.mountsplus.com/AR-15_Accessories/AR-15_Scope_Rings/MZ-1022.html   It's a bullpup conversion for your standard Ruger 10/.22 rifle. i checked the legality of this conversion for the state I live in, California, and found that it IS in fact legal, as long as you only use a 10.22 in it, don't use an automatic, your magazine contains 10 rounds or less, and the barrel over 18 inches, with an overall gun length of 25 inches. Normally bullpup guns are illegal in California, but since the 10/.22 is a rimfire instead of a centerfire, and the ban only applies to centerfire guns, this conversion falls into a neat loophole, and is legal for sale on a normal license.  HOWEVER: I don't plan on putting a 10/.22 in this thing, I plan on tearing out all the internals of the conversion rendering it permanently effectively useless for a real-steel gun, and building a field-spec airsoft gun system inside it, making it basically a nonlethal toy for sports like any other airsoft gun. The final design would be built to the legal specs of a airsoft gun in the united states, with an orange barrel tip and a non-ballistic caliber.  I can even make the final gun fit into the real steel size requirements if that would help the legality. Basically, I don't know if this is legal or not, and haven't been able to find it online. As far as I can figure, it would be legal because the conversion kit counts as a STOCK, rather than a receiver or firearm in and of itself, so that gives a lot more leeway I would think.  I just want to be doubly sure before I begin this project, due to the heightened paranoia over guns and gun laws at this point, I don't want to be thrown in jail for making a toy.

"Call Me Maybe": The Joseph Ducreux Translation

We all love Joseph Ducreux. The below meme (sorry you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to see it) gave me the idea for this forum. I decided Decreuxize the entire "Call Me Maybe" song! You can find the original lyrics here. Below is the parody. Engage in a Conversation with Me ~ Possibly I deposited a wish in the cylindrical reservoir. Do not inquire of me as to of what my fancy consisted, As I will forever withhold from you this piece of information. I turned my eyes upon your person as my wish descended, pulled by gravity, And currently, you are blocking my desired path. I would barter my soul in exchange for the gain of one of the cravings of my heart, And low-value coins in exchange for an osculation. I did not seek out this situation, However, currently, you are blocking my desired path. Your gaze was unwavering, Torn breeches, Epidermis was exposed, The night exhibited an unusually high temperature, And there were active air currents. To where are you intending upon traveling, my babe? Greetings. I just engaged in a first conversation with you, And this is insane. However, here is the group of numerals associated with my telephonic device. You could engage in a conversation with me using the device -- possibly. I find it difficult to hold my eyes Upon your visage, my babe, However, here is the group of numerals associated with my telephonic device. You could engage in a conversation with me using the device -- possibly. You were lax about contacting me, But I needed no such amount of time in order to fall. I gained absolutely nothing from you, However, you are continuing to block my desired path. I beseech, take on return, and purloin. I have the gift of legitimate precognition. I was, however, unaware that I would feel it. Despite this fact, it is blocking my desired path. Your gaze was unwavering, Torn breeches, Epidermis was exposed, The night exhibited an unusually high temperature, And there were active air currents.
