Windmill on top of the mast?

Hi there, I'm rescuing an '72 all-wooden yacht (18ft) named Knights of Ni; the woodwork and painting are mostly done and I'm now busy with the electrics. It has a 12V system running of a car battery which is powered by a small solar cell and if necessary I can charge it on land. I was wondering though, whether it is possible to mount a small windmill on top of the mast using for instance the van of a vacuum cleaner and a bike dynamo (or anything else not too big and heavy), and then running a wire through the mast to the battery. I would be very grateful for your advice. If you want/need to see more pictures of the boat please give me a shout. Greetings from Holland, Barbarossa

Top LED Instructables

The number of awesome LED Instructables keeps increasing, and we want to show them off! We have an older list of top LED Instructables, but within the space of a year and a half, including the very successful Let it Glow! and Get the LED Out! Contests, we've gotten many more cool projects that light up with color due to LEDs. Here are, in no particular order, 10 more great LED Instructables for you to try (or just admire): LED Chess Set With some dedicated modifying, you can turn a cheap glass chess set into a beautiful, glowing version. It also inspired another Instructable, the Simpler LED Chess Set. Synchronizing Fireflies A favorite of randofo's , this series of LEDs shows a possible way that fireflies synchronize lighting up at the same time. Turn Signal Biking Jacket Hand signals, meet technology: a biking jacket with controllable glowing turn signals built in. 4x4x4 LED Cube Make light-based designs and patterns come to life with a large cube of LEDs. Animated Multilayered Engravings Transform a simple engraving into an animated piece of art with LEDs. LED Pasties The LED pasties became an instant classic--a very simple, very creative upgrade of burlesque pasties. Daft Punk Replica Table The squares on top of this table light up individually and can be programmed to make patterns and designs. LED Creatures These LED creatures can be programmed to recognize each other and can be a great project for kids and beginner LEDers. Hard Hat LED Display Geeks and construction workers are not often associated, but this hard hat bridges the gap with its LED Pong display. Fiber Optic and LED Garden Make a glowing garden that looks good both day and night and never needs to be watered. Choosing these 10 was very difficult--there are an enormous number of great LED projects on Instructables.Enjoy these projects, and let there be light-emitting diodes!

Resin table top

Hello, I want to fill my beer bottle cap table in with clear resin and I am wondering how much resin i will need. I have done the math myself but I think I may be wrong. The table is 85"x36"x.25" (has trim up to the cap height) If i did the math correctly I will need 2 gallons of resin. I just want to confirm before I buy $120 worth of resin. The beer bottle caps are roughly 1"x1"x.25" and there are about 2300 of them. so what i did for math was 85x36 = 3060 (x .25) = 765. 765 / 12 = 63.75 square feet 1 gal of resin covers 32 square feet 2 gals needed correct? but then i tried to plug in how much space the caps take up and if i can get away with just 1 gal. so 2300x.25 = 575 square inches 575/12 =47.91 square feet 63.75-47.91 = 15.84 square feet which means 1 gal of resin would be plenty..... am i doing this math correct? thanks for the help!

Top iPhone Instructables

Apple has released the new iPhone--and there are Instructables to make it better. Check out these iPhone-related Instructables, some of our favorites, that can make your iPhone better prepared for everyday use. Retractable Headphones Headphones are always getting tangled up in knots, but these recoiling headphones will keep the wires conveniently curled up and ready to use. Business Card Stand Using just a business card, you can make this simple stand on which you can watch movies or just let your iPhone rest. Handgun Handset By talking into the grip, listening through the barrel, and starting and finishing your calls with a pull of the trigger of this modified airsoft gun, your iPhone calls will never be the same again. If you get trigger-happy, though, you might end up with a bunch of dropped calls. Book Safe As long as you don't choose a piece of classic literature, you can safely conceal your iPhone inside of a book with this design. Car Stand You don't want to be talking on your phone while you're driving, but this car stand will keep the iPhone in a convenient position for music and other purposes during car trips. One-Hand Use A simple loop attached to the back of the iPhone can make one-handed iPhone-ing simple and secure. And these are just a few--there are plenty more great iPhone Instructables to use!

painting an old table top?

Hello people :) , im in the process of painting a table top., ive sanded the top (Lightly) and put an all purpose primer on top, but ive run into a spot of bother, let me explain further. the table top i have detaches from the legs, which bis handy, now looking underneath it, it is painted black, but i can see that it is real wood underneath (i can see and feel grain and knots) BUT on top it seems to be a different wood or covered in something different on top of this, there and rectangles of veneer - which the primer seems to adhere to ok, but the darker part of it dose not seem to pass the fingernail test, so it may not be the right primer, but im stumped as to what primer i would need, sanding didn't seems to make much of a difference to the dark wood barely dull it really, and im not sure its laminate or some sort of plastic... ive added a picture of the table

Today was for first time this happened to me (note: at this machine, the OS is WinXP, and so the browser being MSIE can not be upgraded higher than 7). the grey bar near the top of the page (where SIGN IN is slightly higher in the right hand corner), prevented me from signing in. The drop down box slid behind the grey line. I only managed to get a sign on screen by trying to post here (and then it of course, prompts you to sign in or join).

Dutchj's Top Loading Rifle

Well, here's my Top Loading Rifle. I built this for the sake of building something after being inactive for such a long time. The original idea was to make a very solid gun that could be top-loaded with rods, so the pusher would never have to leave the gun, which would make for quicker reloading. That didn't work because rods always pull on and push each other, but I managed to complete it with different ammo. Some may find it to look a bit boxy, and that's because I didn't add anything to the gun that wasn't needed. No long barrel, no wedge-shaped stock, none of those things. The stock is strong enough as it is, and a longer barrel would only decrease the range ( dramatically ). Here's some basic stats:Type: RepeaterAmmo: Grey connector - green rod - orange connector - green rodCapacity: 9 without the pusher leaving the gun at all. otherwise 10, or more with mods.Range: Depends. I haven't tested, but I think it gets pretty average ranges for a repeater.Power: It drew blood at point blank.Reload time: Shorter then other repeaters with fixed magazines because the pusher never leaves the gun.INSTRUCTIONS: http://knexinnovation.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=49&t;=846

The banner advert (I would assume it's meant to be a Craftsman one, it's where I saw the most of those animated craftsman tool ads) directly below the instructables masthead is sporadically broken for me, replaced with a bunch of gibberish of the form "BZh91AY&SYEHk5߀pc07L>0 5". I can upload a screenshot if you want, but essentially imagine a few lines of that directly below the home-explore-community-submit links and the search box.

Top 10 Summer Instructables

Summer is finally here, and so we've selected the top 10 Instructables related to the summer months. From enjoying the sun to cooling off, here are some of our favorites. These are in no particular order, and there are plenty more great Instructables that didn't make the list but could be fun or helpful this summer. Instant Hammock This instant hammock is a simple, easy way to relax under the sun. The directions are clear and the moving images make following the directions a breeze. Fly a Kite This very appropriate Instructable from Kiteman gives you all of the information, and then some, about how to fly a kite. Cozy Boat If kite flying isn't your thing, perhaps you'd enjoy a scenic boat ride. A simple, easy-to-build boat (and its upgraded incarnations) could add a fun element to your summer. PVC Air Cannon For a little more summer fun, you could throw water balloons...or you could shoot them 250 feet with this cannon. I'd go with the cannon. Make Lemonade After a hot day, there's no better way to cool down than with a tall glass of lemonade. Try this, or one of the many other Instructables recipes. Tetris Ice Cubes To cool the lemonade, though, you'll need ice. You can make your lemonade that much better by adding these tetris-shaped ice cubes. LED Picnic Blanket To enjoy your ice-cold tetris lemonade, you'll want to sit outside and bask in the weather. This LED picnic blanket, with hard center serving surface, could be a great option for a drink or an entire meal. Plus, the lights give the blanket nice ambience for a nighttime meal. Solar Lawn Mower Before you can picnic in the grass, however, your grass needs to be mowed. This upgraded lawn mower uses solar power to provide the energy to power the machine. You still have to mow the lawn yourself, though. Beach Cover-Up If you want to look good while you picnic or when you hang around the beach, this Instructable turns an old towel into an attractive piece of clothing. Heat-Blocking Curtains If your house is hot and muggy, being inside will be anything but relieving. You can turn the AC up, but that uses up an absurd amount of energy and makes the electricity bill skyrocket. These simple, cheap curtains could keep some of the heat out and make your house more efficient and comfortable. These are only a few of the Instructables you can use to your advantage this summer. Enjoy the summer (unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere)!

These stuffed peppers are a great way to use your grill for a very different type of meal. Cut A Watermelon No summer barbecue is complete without watermelon— and you can cut your watermelon and remove the seeds at the same time. Jello Fruit Salad This Jello fruit salad brings a sweet, summery touch to go along with your main meal. Make a Pie Crust Trying to make a classic 4th of July apple pie? Use this pie crust and fill with whatever you like to make the perfect pie. Sweet Soy Ribs For a different spin on grilling ribs, try these sweet soy grilled short ribs or use the marinade to coat something else. Top 10 LED Instructables

LEDs are an incredibly useful and versatile source of light. Use just one of them to make a simple indicator, or wire up a whole bunch and you can create a bona fide high power light source. There are tons of applications for LEDs, and there is certainly no shortage of ideas, projects and helpful feedback at instructables. To help make sense of it all, I thought I would try to pick out 10 of my favorite LED instructables that are great for the LED beginner and the expert alike. This list isn't hierarchical - I like all 10 projects. Instead, it's loosely arranged in ascending level of complexity, so newcomers to LEDs might want to start at the beginning and work their way up (or down as the case may be).Drum roll please...1. LEDs for beginners is a first time guide for anyone looking to learn a little bit about how to wire up one or more LEDs.2. How to solder is a guide that explains how to solder wires, electrical components and more and assumes no prior soldering knowledge. If you're going to work with LEDs, chances are you'll need to do some soldering, so this could be a useful place to learn some skills.3. LED Throwies is a super popular and simple instructable that shows you how to take a magnet, a battery, some tape and an LED, and make a cool light that will stick to anything magnetic.4. Fridge Lights is an instructable that shows you how to turn your refrigerator into a canvas for LED art. It has a little more involved in it than LED Throwies because you have to prepare your refrigerator surface a bit, but its still a great project to get started on working with LEDs. 5. LED Football is a simple project that embeds LEDs in a Nerf football so that you can see it in the dark. The football emerges from the process relatively unharmed, and from the pictures it looks a lot like a cool flying saucer.6. LED Bikelight V2 and How to build a 1,024,000 mcd portable light take multiple LEDs and wire them together to make high power bicycle lights. There are many bike lights on the site besides these two that are also great, but I like these two because they are really BRIGHT. 7. Blue LED Light Box is a bedroom light that helps combat Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD) and the winter blues by letting you bask in 18 watts of LED power. If you like the first iteration of this project check out the Blue LED dawn simulator for Soleil Sun Alarm add on that controls the brightness of the LEDs according to a dawn simulator alarm clock.8. Spoke POV: LED Bike Wheel Images is an instructable that puts LEDs in motion and creates persistence of vision (POV) images of your choice right on your bike wheels as you're riding. If you have never seen POV images before you should definitely check this out as there are a bunch more POV instructables on the site. It's a public mobile display for your bike!9. Watch futurama on an 8x8 pixel screen shows you how to make an LED display that you can use to "watch" tv on. While the actual display doesn't have enough pixels to actually create a recognizable image, I like this instructable because even though I work with technology, I think I secretly want to live like a caveman, and it's this kind of forward thinking backwards technology that gets me going.10. Microdot - wrist watch LED pattern timepiece is an instructable that shows you how to build a unique LED watch. It's one of the more advanced LED projects on the site, but rgbphil offers good support in the comments section and should you decide to build it ever you'll end up with one heck of a watch.Instructables HQ is going to be mailing stickers to the authors of the projects on this list as a mini prize for making great things with LEDs. Anyone else who makes a list of their favorite instructables and posts about it on the forums gets stickers too!
