Torque loss in Drill

Hi, I am having some trouble with torque loss from a drill motor and gearbox I harvested for a project. I followed the steps in this instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/Hacking-Drills-CheapPowerful-GearboxMotors-for-/) to get the motor and gearbox. I then hooked it up to a motorshield and an arduino. Originally the drill (Rigid 18v Cordless) States that it can deliver close to 500 lb-in of torque. However when I hook it up to my apparatus I am able to stop the spinning with my hand.  I use PWM to control the speed but upping the speed still does not produce the required torque. If anyone has any ideas as to why it dropped in torque I would be very appreciative. Thank you in advanced.

Simple Torque Calculation!

Hello! I want to calculate the torque for my project.I will have 4 individual motors to move a vehicle around 10kg. Here’s the specs:Wheel weight = 100g Wheel radius = 3” Wheel axis radius = 2” Vehicle weight = 10kg Speed I want to reach = at least 20mph with ease.Because I’m using four motors, I’m assuming torque needed would also be 1/4 of total torque needed to move the vehicle.Thank you! knex motor torque?

I got a knex motor at goodwill and it has the worst torque it can not make a car go our do any thing use full is there a way to fix it. i do not mean using gears to bring up the torque the motor is silver. it just slips on the rod and will not turn it under pressure

RC servo Torque Increase?

Hi; I have a DC Servo motor. I want to increase its torque. It has 12volt and max 900mamp current gives 15kgcm torque. I want to remove the tiny DC motor and fix a 5amp 12volt big motor with metal gears. I want to ask " How can I give more current without burning the main SMD circuit board". If I place a battery in parallel to the motor terminals it can burn the circuit. Any ideas ?

Estimating torque on microscope stage

Hello,I am involved in a project, based on the technologie used in microscope stages. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Olympus-Mechanical-Microscope-Stage-w-Specimen-Holder-From-Model-BH2/123699351875?hash=item1ccd0e5143:g:Hs4AAOSw0TpckTT2These have an X and Y axis which can move independently and are driven by rack and pinion gear, controlled by a translation unit with two knobs. The consistency of the grease used in the shafts that connect the knobs with the gear generates great damping and resistence when the stage is moved, so that the movement is nicely smooth and slow. I am not a technician/engineer but a designer and know nothing about torque. I need to know the torque that is generated by this sort of system, especially when the stage is moved BY HAND, so not using the knobs. I would be interested in the minimum and maximum torque that is generated when pushing the stage by hand.I am thinking of using a slip clutch/torque limiter to replace the translation unit, because I don't want to depend on grease. That is why I need to know the torque. Anyway, maybe somebody on this forum has a better idea. I'm all open.Thanks,Rob

High torque solar motor?

I've wanted to do this for ages: build a solar stand for a strawberry planter (or it could be for any other plant) with an extremely low RPM. I'd like it to rotate once every 48 hours so that over time all the sides get equal sun exposure. I'd also like it to be solar powered..... All the motors and kits I find are on hobby sites  and they're tiny little things (plus even the high torque ones  have RPMs above 1). I thought of using a clock mechanism, but there's no way it could handle the weight.... Any ideas where I could find what I need? Thanks!

Hi, im building a vehicle to move approximately 0.5kg of load, trouble is the motors are too weak to move the vehicle. its arduino controlled, 4AA's to supply 6Vs to the 2 motor im connecting the motors directly to the wheels (they spin fast when i lift the system up) any ideas as to how i can increase the power ?

Advice about high torque motors ? Answered

So recently I've been wanting to to build some kind of electric mini car/gocart but I have no idea about battery and motor requirements. Basically what I want to know is what would be some battery and motor requirements for such a vehicle, I need to know how many volts, amps, rpm, amp hours, kg per sq cm, motor type etc. I know I'm asking a lot , probably way too much but I'd be really greatful if I could obtain even some of this information.:-)

Looking at cordless drill I noticed one which stated on it that it produced 32Nm of torque at 2000RPM. This seems a lot are they being optimistic. None of my drills have it marked on them.

Does anyone know how treads affect torque? Answered

I am referring to treads like those found on tanks etc.  If the torque on each wheel in a three wheel set is x ft/lbf how would the addition of a tread affect that torque?  Would it increase/decrease it significantly?  Or at all?  Would the thickness of the tread have a noticeable effect?

Torque to linear thrust through lead screw

Hi,I am trying to figure out maximum linear force I can produce with an electric motor through use of lead screw and nut. I have come up with an equation which seems correct but resulting forces are way higher than my intuition believes is correct.I tackled the problem from the perspective of energies:F' * p = M/r * 2*π*rlinear force * thread pitch = torque / radius [M/r = force at radius] * circumference of lead screwF = 2*π*M/p * (1-k) //k stands for coefficient of friction between lead screw and nut)Radius falls out of equation, which seems fine as force is provided by torque, which is radius agnostic. I used a 7€ stepper for source of torque which can provide 0.42 Nm of torque and a lead screw with 8 mm pitch and 4 mm radius, I assumed 15% losses. My equation tells me that such system can provide 280 N of force, which seems wayyy too much for a cheap motor.I have attached a python code that calculates linear force in case it helpsCan someone tell me if my equation is either correct or flawed?

So, I'm fairly new to electric motors. I salvaged a motor from a vacuum. I know that they have high torque. I'm just wondering what kind of weight they could move. For example, if I weigh 225, would it be able to pull me on a go kart?  Thank you!

How to calculate torque required for transport motor?

I'm planning on making my own Segway. My biggest design problem right now is my motors. I need to find the torque needed to move them. I'm thinking an equation like this would use the radius of the wheels, the mass of the rider, etc. How do I find the torque needed to move this Segway? Bonus points if you can point me to a place to get one of these motors. I don't want to spend more than $20 each for the 2 motors. Thanks.

Hi there I'm in the process of developing a K'nex new ball machine lift, but the current motor I am using (the TT one 2 speed- the one below) does not have enough torque to drive the axle. I was wondering which motor is best suitable and has a larger amount of torque. I was thinking the 12V one with the adapter, but since I don't own one yet, I cannot test one. Robot wheel torque to weight calculation help

It's been a while since I've had a physics class and I'm scratching my head to remember how to figure out the following problem.  If I have a pair of motors for a robot wheeled base that have a torque of 6 lb/in each and, lets say, a 5 inch wheel, how heavy of a robot can I build?  I'm starting to build a robot base that I would like to future proof so I can add extra electronics and hardware and start with a battery with plenty of power (which of course means more weight).  I'd like to avoid building the robot and find out later that the motors don't deliver enough force.  Any ideas?

Is the torque that an electric motor provides the same that is required to turn it when not powered?

A 30 hp electric motor provides 158 ft-lbs of torque when rotating at a rate of 1000 rpm. Does the same electric motor require 158 ft-lbs to be cranked at the same speed? Think of it as using any electric motor as an electric generator like in a windmill.

Need hobby motor help

I'm a bit clueless about the technical side of motors. I mean I know how they work and I know torque and speed and whatnot, but I'm looking for certain motors with a certain amount of torque. I'm looking for a motor than can lift approx. 20 pounds plus itself and 3 other motors that have equivalent amounts of torque. I have no clue what the Stall-torque rating is or how it's measured, so a crash course in that couldn't hurt, either. Help?

I'am building a robot based on the beetlebot with 3v motors, i modified it to run with an arduino but now my motors seem to weak i use a p2n2222a transistor to control the motors is there a way to get more power from my motors without using very expensive things (this is a school project and is due in a week so i need your help please) i have a TIP 41A transistor should this allow for a greater current so a greater torque from my 3V motors

what motor should i get PLEASE HELP?

For science fair, i need to make a car for a 'king of the hill' type thing I need 2 motors (one for each back wheel) that can get me up the hill relatively quickly. The maximum power source i'm allowed is two nine volt batteries at one time (i can switch out dead ones in between runs) The hill is 40 inches in height and the ramp leading to the top of the hill is eight feet long The motors need to have a driveshaft sticking out about 1-2 inches for the wheels to fit on I'm not allowed to use remote control but i've devised a way so that the car will stop, regardless of what the motor is. Which power do i need to run a motor as a generator in the following environment?

I want to generate electricity with a rotating axis at a power of 3 Watt. The mechanical torque (depending on the gearbox) on the input axis varies between 0.73 Nm (@ 250 rpm) and 0.122 Nm (@ 1500 rpm). Currently i am thinking about a synchronous machine, because it yields higher efficiency, but it is very difficult for me to find a synchronous machine fulfilling the mechanical torque regarding the power.  Furthermore i usually just find motors in that size, so i need to turn them around but i have problems understanding the data sheet. For example this motor: Name: ASM 16 Output Power: 3.1 W Input Power: 9.2 VA Rotation velocity: 1000 rpm As this is a motor, but i want to use it as a generator, should i align the output power from the motor with my input power (the 3 W mentioned above, and than as a generator)?  Can you please give me some ideas how o progress from here?

Which Servo Should I Choose For My Nerf Gun?

I wanted to build a servo automated nerf gun ,however i am not sure what type of servo i should choose and how much torque i will require.The gun i want to trigger is a semi automatic nerf barricade rv-10 .Should i buy the small 9g hobby servos' or will my need be satisfied y the larger ones which provide torque.I am not using anything to amplify the pull of the trigger by the servo and i am connecting the servo horn directly to the trigger using a small metallic wire like piece .Please help me chose a servo.

Book cover Hinge

Hey all. First time poster here (second attempt, since Instructables stopped responding the first time) so hopefully I am posting in the appropriate place. I have in mind a leather-book-style cover for my tablet that I'm very excited to work on. However, I would like to use friction or torque hinges to position the cover at any angle  from the spine in a 180 degree radius and have it stay there, similar to the screen of a laptop rotating around the hinge. I've included a picture that shows the basic design that I'm aiming for, though the hinge itself doesn't need to be ornate. Unfortunately, I don't really know where to find such a thing. I've looked on various furniture hardware sites and taken a trip to the local hardware/home improvement stores, but I haven't found anything that matches what I'm looking for. Common small brass butt hinges would be ideal if they had friction/torque properties to them, but I can't seem to find anything like that. I've never looked for specific hinges before though, so for all I know they've been right in front of my and I didn't realize what they were. Does anyone know where I can find such hinges, or can someone offer up an alternative solution? Perhaps there is a way to add friction to simple hinges bought from a hardware store. I've been working on this (hobby status) on and off over the last fifteen years or so.... a mechanism that immediately begins to rotate in either direction with an imbalancing displacement of as little as one degree. With repeated periodic displacements of as little as five to seven degrees its rate of rotation rapidly approaches about a 100 to a 150 rotations per minute over the course of just eight to ten repetitions, all while overcoming only negligible frictional resistance from the main axel (equipped with bearings). It may have some applications for extracting rotational motion more efficiently from wind and wave and maybe a couple of other things too.... or it may just be a work of art.

What is the best gear ratio for my Go-Kart? Details below

I have a Go-kart I am building and was wondering what gear I should get that connects to the axle from my motor. It will be Direct Drive and the motor has a 11 tooth sprocket. The motor is 48 v, 1000 watts and 3000 rpm. The wheels are 9.5 in diameter. I will be driving on mostly to totally flat areas. Plz ask for any other info you need :) thanks!

any ideas on where to get or how to make a torque based switch?

Im wanting to make a motorised target changing rig that will need to stop against a back stop a set distance away from the shooter. i want to make the rig self contained (i.e. no additional switches etc. down range) so that different distances can be used. the only way i can think to do this is to use a switch that stops the motor when a certain torque is reached.  any other ideas on how to do this are very welcome

Rewinding a DC motor for different voltages

I modified small DC motors, like used in toys and such but now I have one that requires to do it properly.Motor in question runs on 24V and uses about 3.5A under full load.Drives a high pressure water pump on either side of the shaft.The rotor is basically empty with just a few turns of wire and lots of empty space.I assume the same model is used for multiple power configurations by the manufacturer.For the toys my basic approach was to just calculated the number of turns or to count them when removing.From there I get the voltage per turn and can rewind accordingly.So in theory and by blissfully ignoring all higher things involved I could do this motor the same way.Right now I see 10 windings per coil, so with thicker wire I would use 5 to run it on 12V at roughly the same speed.Only problem is that thing then would use around 7.5 to 8A when running under full load and get quite hot.I need the speed to keep the flowrate at the same 7.5L per minute but I also need the power to be able to still get the 120PSI from just 12V.Isn't there any winding trickery that would allow me to reduce the required current a bit without sacrificing on speed or torque?

The studs that bolt the exhaust manifold onto the engine on my dads nissan navara (year 1990) with a td27 engine have broken. The engine is un turbed. What are the stud torque settings for these bolts? Thanks.

whats the best motor and ESC to use for a high torque r/c tank?

I am currently building an r/c tank, but i am having trouble finding a suitable motor and ESC that will allow it to go realy fast ( high speed tank). all i can find are brushless motors that require 30A at 6-12v, the same goes for the esc's, and i have no idea were to get that sort of power as i only have access to a 9.6v 750ma battery but i can get sealed, lead-acid batteries, at around 12v and 3amps, but thats still nowhere near what i need. does anyone know where i can get a brushless motor that can have at least 30kg of torque @ at least 1500rpm, that can run off 1A 9V?

Need a Motor for ASTM testing: 1-5 RPM, ~150 lb in of torque. Any ideas?

I need a motor with low speed and high torque as described above. Thinking about using a 12V power supply but I'm flexible there. I've tried gear motors but I can't find any with the characteristics I need. The application: motor needs to turn a screw that is fixed until the screw fails. After I have the motor I need I'm gonna have to find some way to graph the torque vs. speed curve. Can't spend a fortune but willing to spend up to $100 because it's time critical. Summary: Needed RPM: 1-5 RPM Torque: 150 lb in Cost <=$100 Thank you so much for any suggestions!

Whats the best way to make an air powered go kart? Answered

I have an old go kart I'm fixing up and decided I want to make it run on compressed air. My question is whats the best way to achieve this? I've been debating between having an air motor drive the wheels directly, or having the air motor turn an alternator/generator to power an electric motor. I figured having the compressed air doing the work would require more torque, and therefor more air, whereas if the air motor just had to turn an alternator/generator it would need less torque and more speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
