UCs, Toyota Team Up

Toyota has donated two Priuses--one to the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Berkeley and one to the Advanced Power and Energy Program at UC Irvine--for consumer research and upgraded electric car capabilities. The big news: a plug-in possibility that would allow for pure electric power up to 60 mph, a significant upgrade from the current 30 mph limit (after 30 mph, some gas is needed). A 7 mile commute could be done purely on electric energy, with no gas. Additionally, the universities will do research on people's reactions to charging their car and trying to gauge consumer preferences. This is not particularly new, but it could still be huge for the electric car community. Thanks to Tim Anderson for bringing this to our attention.Link

Toyota Hilux fuel issue

I have a Toyota hilux that will not go over 80km(49Miles). I suspected it to be caused by lack of fuel supply so I replaced the diesel fuel filter and then removed the top of fuel tank to clean the pickup filter in the tank. Following this I blew the fuel lines that go from the tank to the filter near the engine with air and all the lines were clean with no sign of dirt. I then put it all back together and bled the fuel system before going for a test drive. After preforming the test it had not improved at all and still struggles to go faster than 80km. Wondering what would cause this after thoroughly cleaning fuel system? You can rev the engine all the way up to 3-4 thousand revs in neutral and its fine but under load it is very sluggish and wont preform. Could it be injector pump issues or something like that? Appreciate any help :)

Toyota Will Offer a Plug-In Hybrid by 2010

If you make it, they will come. Or something.CalCars, the California Cars Initiative, has not only been campaigning for plug-in hybrid vehicles, they were the first to build a plug-in Toyota Prius. CalCars longstanding, and really quite simple, thesis is that plug-in hybrids can achieve 100+ MPG using today's technology:We promote plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). PHEVs are like regular hybrids but with larger batteries and the ability to re-charge from a standard outlet (mostly at night). They're the best of both worlds: local travel is electric, and you always have a gas-tank backup. More details here.Toyota seems to have finally received the message, now pledging to offer a plug-in hybrid by 2010: Toyota Will Offer a Plug-In Hybrid by 2010 (NYT). From the article:DETROIT -- The Toyota Motor Corporation, which leads the world's automakers in sales of hybrid-electric vehicles, announced Sunday night that it would build its first plug-in hybrid by 2010.The move puts Toyota in direct competition with General Motors, which has announced plans to sell its own plug-in hybrid vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt, sometime around 2010.Katsuaki Watanabe, the president of Toyota, announced the company's plans at the Detroit auto show as part of a series of environmental steps.Mr. Watanabe said Toyota, best known for its Prius hybrid car, would develop a fleet of plug-in hybrids that run on lithium-ion batteries, instead of the nickel-metal hydride batteries that power the Prius and other Toyota models.Plug-in hybrids differ from the current hybrid vehicles in that they can be recharged externally, from an ordinary power outlet. In a conventional hybrid the battery is recharged from power generated by its wheels.Mr. Watanabe said the lithium-ion fleet would be made available first to Toyota's commercial customers around the world, like government agencies and corporations, including some in the United States. He did not say when they would be available to consumers.Another case of hackers' solutions becoming mainstream? Definitely!

The manual (driver side) door will only open a few inches, because it thinks the gas cap door is open-a safety feature.

I have a toyota Sienna 2005 minivan. The sliding manual (not power door) door on the driver side is catching on the mechanism build in to stop the door from sliding all the way open when the gas cap door is open. After filling up the other day, and closing the gas cap door, I am no longer able to open up the sliding manual door on the driver side. This has happened before ver randomly and I used to be able to get it to open by manually pushing the little black "release" button on the inside of the gas cap door a few times, but this no longer works. How to fix this? Thank you in advance.

We just had the clutch replaced in our 2009 Toyota Corolla.  Now it grinds going into 1st and 5th gear.  We have never had any problems with it prior to that.  Is it possible that the clutch isn't adjusted right or is the synchro bad?  It drives worse now than before replacing the clutch.

1992 Toyota Paseo (5-speed manual transmission) with difficulty shifting into 1st, 2nd, 5th & reverse?

I have a 1992 Toyota Paseo that's recently started shifting hard into all gears except 3rd & 4th.  We've tried it even when the car's off and it's still having difficulty, so it doesn't seem like it would have anything to do with the clutch.  Weirdly, it doesn't seem to do it all the time. It almost seems like it does it right after it's rained. When it's being difficult, the hardest to shift into is definitely reverse, although 5th isn't always a picnic either. 1st and 2nd are a little tough, but not that bad. 3rd and 4th are smooth as butter. Is it possible for the shift assembly box (or whatever it's technically called) to have some sort of difficulty that could be causing it to stick or be held back in some way? My boyfriend is a mechanic (although he hasn't been able to take it in yet) and he doesn't think it's the transmission, but he's not all that familiar with manual transmission cars. It's got about 160,000 miles on it. Any thoughts?

Can i increase my carrying capacity if i install heavy duty coils?

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia and it has coil springs all the way around. I was wondering if i merely installed some variable rate coil springs (so it still isn't like driving a rock) that have a heavier weight rating if i could load my SUV heavier. On vacation I carry 4 people, their luggage, and a small 14 foot pop-up camper. I'm using a weight equalizer hitch, and as it stands, i am maxed on the back axle and could carry 200 lbs more on the front. If i installed heavier suspension, can i expect my axle and chassis to be able to handle the extra weight? and how much more?

I'm replacing my rusting out brake lines on my "93 Toyota 4x4. Is there such a thing as flexible copper brake lines ? Answered

My 1993 Toyota 4x4 is rusting out under the frame area! Flaking everywhere. Now my fuel and brake lines are rotting out too. I am slowly replacing the leaky lines, but its messy and time consuming. The standard steel lines don't bend easily, unless you have a bending tool. Is there such a thing as flexible copper brake line tubing? If so where can I get some?

Bad stereo ground/fried alternator

After reading the instructions I installed an aftermarket stereo in my 1999 Toyota Camry. I'm confident in that I made all the proper connections correctly, but I think my ground wire is bad.a few day after I heard a high pitch whine that got louder when the rpms got higher. Then the power would cut off from the stereo but only for a split second, then my car would do the same thing until ultumitly it was completely DEAD I couldn't even turn on my hazards. I'm pretty sure my alternator is fried. And I think it's the ground wire. Now my question is can I run a direct ground from my stereo to the car or do I have to chase this wire down?

See On Board Compressor/welder for a vehicle. Can 2nd alternator be eliminated?

This instructable relates to this question . I can see the need for a second air conditioning compressor for that part of the build. With the alternator however, there is one under the hood already. Why not hack it to do two jobs. Couldn't you just add back in the alternator parts you disabled in an external box and then with some wire and switches, alternate back and forth between welding and charging. The car can run off the battery for a while, so this should work. Part 2 of this question is, the alternator in my case is in a Toyota Corolla. Toyota makes pretty tough stuff, however will my alternator make nearly, or as much juice as the Ford unit the guy recommends for the hack. I could swap in a Ford alternator I suppose, however it would likely require significant work to adapt the mounting bits. Thanks for Listening, Zipperboy

Is it true that for some cars nowadays, 90,000+ miles is "just getting started" and possibly OK to buy? Answered

I need to sell a late model lo-miles car & buy a cheap one & have lots of cash left over. I keep seeing Toyotas, Subarus, etc. with like 150,000 or even 180,000 miles and the sellers want $5,000-7,000 for them! Is this a sucker's bet? I used to buy cars only if they had less than 50,000 on the clock, but those are over my budget now.

"Metal" letters/Car "name" magnet

I recently bought a bright blue Toyota Yaris and I would like to put a magnet of the word "Tardis" on it. I want to make the word look as close as possible to the "Yaris" metal nameplate on the car. The letters don't have to be metal, but I would like them to be metallic and something that's not going to deteriorate that easily. A friend of mine had made something akin to this out of shrinky dinks that she painted with silver paint, but I don't know how long that would hold up.

I'm a beginning engineering student and my dad is also an engineer. I'm not sure, but it seems he is using secondary voltage to power the split and then burning it. He claims 60 mpg. If you guys would like to give me a series of questions/tests, I would love to go to my hometown and ask/perform them, then report back. Any takers?

Intact fog light wiring and switch going to waste, what else could they be used for?

I'm 16 and have a '83 Toyota Tercel, a bit of a junker, but I'm trying to learn everything I can from it. The previous owner removed the front turn signal assemblies and replaced them with fog lights which isn't legal to drive in MT. I bought and installed the new turn signal assemblies, and almost removed the fog light wiring (plus the switch inside the car to turn them on), but I would hate to waste all that wiring already set up nice and neat. What else could I hook up to them? Any ideas?
