Room heat transfer?

Greetings all, I live in a solar powered house which is heated by a single log burning stove which is situated in the main living area. Is it possible for me to transfer heat to the colder rooms by simply putting ducting between the top sections of the adjoining walls (seeing that hot air travels to cold areas - in theory!) or will I have to use a fan? I am trying to use as little power as possible or ideally non at all. Has anyone got any experience of this or know of any suitable solutions? Many thanks in advance.

Pro Patches Not Transferred

I received a Pro membership for being featured, so I was using that for the 6 months or however long it was supposed to last. I waited for it to expire so I could renew my regular paid membership, which I just did. However, none of my patches transferred, I only had the 15 that I was supposed to get for the one year membership I just paid for. Before I had at least 20, so I should have about 35 now. This same thing happened before when I waited for my paid one to expire in order to use the one that I won, I had to contact Instructables to get them back. Is there a way I can get all of them back again, and maybe change it so that you still have the patches even when the membership expires?

PCB toner transfer? Answered

Hey all- back with another dilemma. Whilst trying to make a PCB for the second time (first failed miserably), Im stuck on toner transfer. I printed my design out from eagle and laid it out, and Ironed it for about 2min on each side (mostly because the first time i tried i did it for about a minute and i only got about half the design on). When it cooled down i took it off and nothing got transferred. I got some residual lines from I think heat stress on the paper, but I was able to take them off. So naturally I tried again- but this time with a different method. I found some t-shirt transfer paper upstairs, and tried that. NEVER doing that again. I ended up having to sand my board down for like 5-7 min trying to get all the gunk off. Any ideas why my printer method doesnt work? Im using the same brand of photo paper as last time (Costco Kirkland brand), but a different printer- a canon instead of a brother. I have access to the brother printer, a hi quality photo printer (1200 dpi I believe), a dell laser printer, and the canon. I think I used the brother printer last time I tried (or possibly the photo printer- also a canon). Could that be the problem? Thanks in advance- Astroboy907 P.S I also have some transparency sheets if anyone has a method to get that to work.

If a material is heated from the one side (100C), does it require the same amount of cooling (-100C) to get it cold?

If a material is heated from the one side and it takes 10min to transfer the energy to the other side, how long will it take to get the material cool to it's original temperature? (10min?) Does it depend on heating versus cooling. in other words, if it is heated at 100degrees, do you need to cool it at -100degrees to equal the time it takes to enter versus the time it takes to exit?

What is the best method to determine the minimum surface area to conduct electricity through a metal conductor?

I have a piece of steel that I am looking to have ~12VDC applied to it.  My goal is to have the voltage driven power supply, send ~12VDC and 2W of power to the piece of steel through a point-contact system (the piece of steel touching the power supply terminal). My question is, what is the best way to determine the minimum surface area of the piece of steel at the point of contact?

PSP Umd transfer: POSSIBLE?!?!?

I had this great idea for transfering UMDs to a PSP Go. If you have custom firmware on your PSP you can download UMDs to a memory stick, and from there put them on the computer, right? Starting to make sense? Maybe you could then download the game to a PSP Go!! I'm not sure if its possible, though. Does someone have any idea if it could work?

Soft T-shirt transfers? Answered

I've seen a couple of vintage shops using really high quality transfers put on t-shirts to make them look old. (So the t-shirt and transfer look old and soft like a genuine vintage tee) The transfers you get in shops always end up feeling crispy and cheap, and looking glossy. Does anyone know where I can get decent transfers or an alternative method? (Not fabric paint!) Thanks! x

Need Help with CitraSolv Transfers !!!

Hi, I have been trying to do the step-by-step tutorials on how to do the CitraSolv image transfers and I can't get the image to transfer.  Everyone is commenting how quick and easy it is......well - it is  but when I lift the paper I have no image! I went to Staples for some toner based black and white photocopies of my image.  Came home and did everything it said to do. No image! Went to Kinkos the next day and the man behind the counter assured me that all the copiers were toner based cartridges (I even opened up the side door and saw the toner cartridge myself!).  I made some more copies and followed the instructions for the transfer and still - Nothing!  No image.  I burnished harder, added more liquid, held my mouth just right...... What the heck am I doing wrong?  I really want to do this for some pillows I am making for a gift for a friend....... Anyone?  Help please......

Ink jet phot transfer

Ok so I am doing a project it and looking for a nice way to finish it off. I have this part down pretty good... I have laser printed photos use acrylic medium to transfer the photo to the wood. Then I put some mod podge gloss coat over it. And this looks fine. But... I have recently been interested in using a product called "glaze coat" it's a 2 part epoxy that is used for thinks like counter tops and stuff just gives it a nice hard crystal clear glossy finish. But I'm worried that it might destroy the pictures in the wood if I use it. Any ideas or experience doing this.

Heat transfer through cement

I have a garage on top of garage because my land is on a hill. The lower garage is all concrete all the way around including the ceiling. The floor in the upper garage is the cement from the roof of the lower garage. I want to heat the upper garage, but I know the floor will always be really cold because it is cement and the lower garage is not heated. The lower garage does stay quite a bit warmer than outside temps. My question is this, If I heat the lower shop, will the floor in the upper garage and the upper garage that is insulated be warm as well? Or am I better off just heating the upper shop and having a cold floor? I spend a lot of time in the garage and would like it comfortable when I am in there. ThanksJed

Created Instructable Draft and want to transfer author credit

A fellow member was working on a project he was talking to me about. I encouraged him to write it up as an instructable but he's still in the thick of it. I created an instructable draft outlining his project adding links he'd sent me. The text is all pretty much directly from our conversations and I just wanted to help him get started since his work should really be out there. I've added him as a collaborator on the project, so he can edit it but I want to give him full control to publish it and show up as the author since I figure he'll be taking over at this point. Is there a way to do this?

Sending email from wifi-enabled Arduino via Raspberry Pi?

I want to put instrumentation on a number of appliances and systems around the house by using wifi-enabled Arduinos. The Arduinos would send me notifications of status changes by texting my cell phone. In order to do this, I need to be able to send email from the Arduinos. I would prefer to use raw (command line) SMTP, but I'd prefer to avoid encryption to keep it simple. This brings up the problem of sending my email login password in the clear, which I also don't want to do. So, it occurred to me that I could set up a raspberry pi as a local mail server, send unencrypted mail to it, and have it forward encrypted mail to my email account. However, so far in my reading it seems that I have to have a domain name for the server to be able to set it up. But I don't want incoming mail at all, which would be the reason for setting up a domain. Is there a way to set up an outbound-only, domain-free mail transfer agent on a Raspberry Pi? Or is there a better way altogether? Thanks

USB charging and data transfer problems

I recently got some mobile phones given to repair the USB ports. You might know the problems claimed on faulty USB problems first hand: charging takes forever, device is not always recognised in Windows, data transfers are interrupted or the device disappears suddenly and without any reason from your explorer. Although a lot of devices can suffer from from those symptoms and will work fina after paying money for a new USB port I also discovered a totally different source for the problem. In my case the cables itself. It is obvious that you should try a different USB cable before going through the lengths of replacing a USB port, but: a) not all cables are the same even if they have the same connectors! Some cables contain resistors to regulate the max charging current, others simply have flimsy and hair thin wires inside, prone to breaking. b) not all chargers are the same either! For example Apple chargers provide a voltage on the data lines that in return tells the device how fast it can charge - totally against the USB standards but Apple claims it is fine because they don't use a USB connector on the device side... Why does my device get problems with the USB? Well, to be honest, I don't know as it is not my device ;) Joking aside I will narrow it down to wear and tear. Both the connection on the phone and inside the USB connector can and will wear down over time. With daily charges for power users it is obvious that at some stage one part has to fail. Having a spare, quality replacement cable at hand often helps to find the source of the problem. In my case I had the cables for the phones but also a brand new and with 5$ quite expensive cable to spare. Guess what? None of the supplied cables worked while my new cable performed perfectly with all "broken" phones. After checking the USB ports with good light and a magnifying glass I could see dust, dirt and worn contacts. For 3 of the 5 devices a decent cleaning with methylated spirit and a small brush fixed that issue, the other two will either need a proper new cable or a port replacement. What to do if I have USB problems? 1. Check on a different PC or for the charging use a different charger. 2. Try a different, if possible new cable. 3. Check and clean the USB port. Only if the above won't help at all you should consider that the port itself might be faulty! Is there something to prevent the repair? Yes: don't use your USB port too often ;) This means, you can use a QI charger (wireless) and for the data transfer WiFi, on Android Airdroid is a really good choice. Keep your device clean! This does not mean you are a filthy pig, but more that a phone with an uncovered port tends to collect dust and dirt over time. In your hand bag, pocket or car, it does not matter time will get unwanted stuff in there. If you want to keep your device happy use a cover that also covers the USB port. I checked all the above and think I need a new port - what are my options? If in warranty go the offical way. Out of warranty a repair shop will fix it fast, but not always at reasonable costs, depending on the device and labour involved. Some devices are easy, others require the display to be removed to acces the port electronics. Online tutorials on how to dismantle your device should be available and if you are good with sensitive stuff you can do the repair yourself. Some sellers of replacement ports not only include all the tools you need (watch out for this if you don't already have them) but also videos on how to do it. I hope this little info helps people to avoid high repair costs for no good reason.

Wireless energy transfer and resonant coupling?

I am getting a bit sick and tired of frying expensive parts, entire coils and sitting in stinking smoke for hours, so time to gather some new ideas from you guys ;) Problem as short as possible: I am working on wireless energy transmission. Not with the usualy distances we know from charging pads or electric toothbrushes though, I am aiming for 30cm and more of distance here. After endless hours wasted on testing different coil designs I think I got that one nailed quite good but the thing is that I seem to be unable to keep resonance under load. The coils require a very tiny window for the right operating frequency in the 40kHz range or for the other design in the 150kHz region. When the frequency shifts more than 3 or 4kHz from the resonant point the efficiency drops to useless. Since this entire thing is planned to be as simple as possible so everyone can do it I would like to prevent complicated electronics. The few I need so far are done through ready to use modules. Of course a microcontroller would be the most obvious choice here but that does not fit in as I like "old school" for this one. Two ways I considered so far with more or less success: a) Fixed frequency feed and limited output power. This works actually quite well but only allows for tiny power levels like charging a mobile phone or tablet if you have some time. Problem however is that load changes affect the frequency and without a link back to the sender the efficiency goes down and not enough energy reaches the receiver for usage. b) ZVS driven coil. So far this approach gives the best output power but also uses huge amounts of juice. Good to make a fancy glass stand for your TV and supply the power through a hidden receiver in the base of the TV but since there is no limit or link between sender and receiver it is full power only. Is there a really simple way to provide a limited amount of power together with automatic resonance keping? Next one might be a bit tricky: Is there a simple way to increase the harmonic frequencies? As we know every simple oscillator also creates and reacts to the corresponding harmonic frequencies. On the sender's side I would like to be able to not just feed the primary frequency but also one of the harmonic frequencies with a similar power level. Again without a microcontroller or extensive electronics where possible.

Why dont they use alcohol in closed system steam engines? Other than safety?

By closed system i mean constant mass of working fluid.  i.e. no steam leaving system, like an air conditioner. My point is that alcohol has a lower boiling point that water, (some kinds can boil from the heat of your hand!). SO other than the safety problem of alcohol being flamable, alcohol could operate with a lower heat input than water.    With the addition of a cold resivoir, the closed system alcohol steam engine could work right? Or why not use a refridgerant gas in a closed system steam engine cycle,? >Which would effectively absorb the heat input any ideas? addition*  I mean for use in any steam engine with a closed loop cycle, like the Rankin cycle   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rankine_cycle
