Trip Gauge

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could get an inexpensive (used is ok) trip gauge to tell me real time MPG in my car. I didn't see much on ebay, and am not interested in spending $169 on a new one. I'm not sure the year of my Ford Taurus, but I can check tomorrow. Thanks!

Tripping a Breaker

Hello. I need help with charging a capacitor bank I have. It consists of 10 capacitors: 4 4700uf capacitors and 6 6800uf capacitors. All are wired in parallel. I have been charging them with 110AC rectified to DC. The only problem is that whenever I flip the switch to start charging, it trips our shop's 20A breaker and you have to flip it back to start charging again. It trips our breaker every time and dims the lights making my dad angry. So I need some tips on what wattage resistor i need to use to keep from tripping the breaker. I experimented with a 10W resistor and that was way too much resistance. I am not allowed to experiment anymore until someone credible can tell me what to do. Thanks for your help.

Road Trip/Pilgramage

Me and my partner are planning a rode trip from Seattle to Denver to see Thich Nhat Hahn in august. So far our route is taking us through yellow stone and along the bear tooth highway. On the way home we are planing to go through the north part of Utah and through Idaho back into Washington. Anyways I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for places we should go see. I am particularly looking for places that are off the map.

laser trip wire?

I need to build a laser security system. I already have an alarm that works by shorting two wires with a trigger switch there by activating the alarm. I want to activate this alarm with a laser trip wire. I don't want to get a whole security system I just want to get the laser emitter and the receiver. I can't find this part any where. If somebody could help me find this part I would apreciate it. Thanks.

I’ve seen several configurations of a laser perimeter alarm design, however, I don’t want a piezoelectric buzzer going off. I want a message or alert sent to my smartphone. San Francisco Trip

Heading to San Francisco in April for a family wedding and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on things to do.  I'm bringing my three little girls, 10, 8 and 6, so we will have to do some touristy things.  They would like to see Instructables and I don't know if that is possible.  Specifically I need to find a moderately priced hotel,  a restaurant in China town or any tips you might have.  I am from Chicago and know that sometimes Google doesn't work so great, like suggesting a restaurant or hotel that was just featured on the nightly news, and not for good reasons.  Thanks in advance for any help. Instructables Shark Watching Trip!

First off, we didn't see sharks, but that doesn't mean we didn't have a good time! Yesterday (11/20/13) the Instructables crew went out on a rented boat (there were people to drive this boat) and went out to the Farallon Islands to try to see sharks because the site was able to get 1 Million visits in a single day!  So this was thanks to all of you! It was not the best day (bit rainy and cold), but we all had a good time and only 4 of us got sick!  Yay! Pictures provided by everyone!  Gif by Renee.

inrush current make mcb trip

Hi all, i have a problem with my miter saw, it run at 220v and have power 1.8Kw or 1800w my house power can provide 2200Va, the problem is, when i start the miter saw the MCB will trip,  so i must turn off all my electrical home aquipment , than i can use my miter saw. i try to search on g**gle and find that it need some slow start, or soft start so the mcb will not trip again. it cause from inrush current, when the motor start. but the slow start  some forum in indonesia say it can be done by using capacitor bank. to repair the power factor but there is no explanation what size of capacitor bank we can use for any diffrent load...especially a big load like mitter saw for sure, how can i reduce inrush current from the miter saw? what should i do?

Electric Mower will not start, trips the breaker?

I have a Task Force model #25143 electric mower (corded) that suddenly stopped while I was cutting some grass that I admit was probably too tall.  I have had no previous problems with it whatsoever since I bought it new last year.  After some searching I found out that it had tripped the breaker (was plugged into the GFI outside the house).  It's only a short cord--an extension must be used.  I bought a new one last month, but tried two other ones just to be sure--no change.  I tried using a different outlet--no change.  I tried using an inside outlet and promptly tripped that breaker as well.  I checked the blade, it spins freely, there was a small amount of grass on the shaft above it, I removed that.  There was a lot of cut grass on the underside of the deck (it's a mulching mower) and I removed all that going to the side discharge and the chute where the bag would be.  I took off the cover to the motor, there was some grass and dust in there, I cleaned it all out.  As for the connections, they are still clean as a whistle--no rust, corrosion, burning, fraying, etc. they still look new.  I was looking for a fuse and couldn't find one, checked by the motor and in the handle where the switch is.  After all this it still trips the breaker so I'm thinking there has got to be a short. The plug side of the extension cord was warm.  I found an answer that said use a multi-meter and I suppose I could go buy one but then what do I do with it?  I don't know what I'm supposed to hook it to and I don't know what any of the readings would mean.  I'm too low on cash now to pay for repair or buy a new one and where I live the grass needs to be cut almost 2x a week--any advice?  How can I find the short or is the motor gone?  I also read about motor "brushes" but don't think I saw any not that I would know what they look like anyway.  I included pics of the switch and the motor.

Redirecting power to evade a power trip.

Summer days can be a bit too much in Southern California and my family uses a lot of electricity to keep the house cool. The problem is that one side of the breaker for the house is too heavy to handle all the appliances and electronics; because of it, the power trips a lot since people in my house apparently don't understand the whole "turn something off before you turn something on" concept. I considered running extension cords throughout the house but not only is it not practical but it can be a bit dangerous with the build up of friction from the ohms and what have you. I've been trying to think of ways to solve this issue and I was thinking maybe I could install a sensor switch or something of the sort that would not allow the use of certain appliances while others were on or maybe something that would turn something else off automatically in order for something else to be used. My biggest problem is I'm no graduate or electrician. I know a thing or two about the sort and am very capable of learning, I just need someone to point me in the right direction. I may not even be thinking in the right area which is why I'm posting. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

IR trip wire with discreet components

I am in need of help and I am going insane with this. Question is about a simple circuit with IR sensor/tripwire part and 555 timer which would keep the alarm buzzer on for thee seconds. No fancy stuff like arduino or relay or anything like that just LEDs, resistors, transistors, 555 timer and a buzzer. I got the IR sensor part to work and the timer part to work, but when I try to combine them everything goes haywire and nothing works. I have IR photo transistor TOPS-030 as the IR sensor. I am really starting to lose my mind with this and it has been three years since I started doing this project. I got diagnosed with undefined neurological disease (probably MS-disease) which has slowed my down even more. I worked on the circuit every now and then not every night during the past three years =) I know this circuit is simple and it can be put together in a brief moment the thing that is driving me crazy is the fact that when I got something working then everything goes haywire. Doing very basic beginner instructable describing this circuit would be very helpful even to others not just me. It would also keep the knowledge of using discreet logic up in these micro controller days.

Help please! Repairing trip-up!

Please Help!!! I need help to fix my telephone's mic! I have a telephone at home that was dropped many times and ultimately finished breaking something (e.i. the microphone) so while me being an aspirating electronic engineer (NOOB!) I tried to open up the phone and change the mic with a solution that I thought pretty smart; I learn some time ago that if you change the polarity of a speaker, you can use it as a mic so I naturally opened up the phone and to my surprise I find 2 freaking mics that look nothing like a speaker (or even a freaking mic for that matter) (Picture below). So I was asking myself... Can someone help me to change the mics in the phone with the speaker (Picture of the speaker below, any of the speakers are ok), by telling me about any changes that I have to do or any alert that this might not work (keep in to consideration the voltage, speaker type, and the polarity)... P.S. â€‹II was also thinking about changing the antenna because it's pretty weak!(Pics below). Any thoughts about that? And Thank You! Sincerely; Your hopefully future friend and companion: AntF

Don't try this at home, EVER ! The trip to NYC

Ah, I have finally gotten a little time to put some of the details up about my Trip (definition of trip, to stumble, fall, or to almost fall....) to NYC. The bus ride to Manhattan was uneventful. We were dropped off behind the Winter Garden Theater at 50th St. and 7th Ave. For those familiar with the city, this is a little north of Rockefeller Center, and a little west of Radio Music Hall. My little adventure started with me being a little greedy with what I wanted to see on this short day trip. I started down 7th Ave. and decided to scoot over to Broadway. In walking down Broad way (heading south, now) one have to be careful as it crosses the other blocks on a diagonal and it is very easy to lose the road and end up on 7th (and further south; you start ending up on 6th Ave - the Ave. of the Americas). The blocks heading south were shorter then those in the East - West directions. Walking through the Theatre District, and finally reaching Times Square (which is on 7th Ave), I was taking my fair share of pictures (Later, after I get them all posted, I will have to get my Sis in Law to help me identify the buildings, etc.) . Moving from Times square, I get the Garment District. This was a fairly quick walk for me, I didn't see much I really was impressed by there. Madison Square Park, was a nice little area, and then came the weirdest building I have EVER seen (and I have seen a house the shape of a shoe), I came upon the Flatiron building (see pics). In the Flatiron District was Union Square park. A fairly small park. Now, the streets going East and West were numbered, and I had started at 50th St. I was now at 12th, where Broadway becomes University Pl. and it ends at Washing Square Park. This was a nice little park too, so I got a few pictures of it. By this time, not having had a breakfast, I thought it would be good to find something to eat. I moved west along 4th st. until I got to Broadway again. Once I got into Soho (South Houston), I started getting a little turned around (I had just walked nearly 50 blocks). When I got to Canal Street, it was so crowded, I only went about one block on the street and didn't find anything of interest, so I continued on south on Cortland. Somewhere in this area I found (somehow I got to Chamber's St) I found a little Indian restaurant called Jhankar. It was a pleasant atmosphere, and the food was good. I continued on Chambers to get to the east side. I saw the World Financial Center, and eventually found Ground Zero. I took a few pics of what I could see. I did wonder around Battery Park a bit too long, and finally asked someone how to get to the Staten Isl. ferry docking point. I was told it was another 20+ minute walk further south (I was already at the other ferry docking ports and had already walked for over 4-5 hours). He let me know of the Shuttle bus, which the city pays for, which would pick me up and drop me off right outside the area of the Staten Isl ferry. That was a really decent little ferry ride too. 1/2 hour over, 1/2 back. Now it was getting to be near 6 PM and I thought I had better have a little to eat before heading back to 50th st. After walking a few blocks, I realized I was NOT going to make it in time. I looked for a Subway terminal but found none (I had already walked as far as getting back up to the most southern tip of Chinatown. I walked (very briskly) up to Bleecker St. looking for a subway or a cab. I finally got a cab waved down (I am just NOT the type of person that waves down cabs), and we headed off. I called the Bus driver. He said it shouldn't be long, he should get me there in time; and said traffic is a bit heavy here on 4th street. He nearly blew a fuse (and he had just reason too).....but he calmed down and said he'd circle the block and hope I got there soon, and to give him a call when I did. Fortunately, when I finally got back to 50th and 7th, it was only 12 minutes late and he had just pulled up with the bus. Besides the quarter sized blister on the ball of my right foot, and the lunch/brunch I had I brought nothing home with me (well, I forgot about the sunburn on my head.....yeah yeah, I should have worn a cap). All in all, it was nice to see everything......and I will never again walk 70+ blocks just to see everything again. I will become familiar with the subways, as that is about the cheapest way to go (except the shuttle bus). And I am about as stiff as I can be....now for some pictures. UPDATE:More pics UPDATE #2 The few remaining pictures I have left have been uploaded with these to my Facebook album NYC Trip

Miele washing machine - tripping the electricity (RCD)

Hi I have a Miele W5741 washing machine which is three years old. The other day it tripped the electricity (RCD) I found that it would trip the RCD every time regardless of what program I used. After a few trials I have found the following: if I use the machine and select cold water (no heating of water) then it does not trip the electricity (RCD). So my conclusion is that it is the heater that is causing the washer to trip the electricity! What do you think? I opened up the front to locate the heater. However I don’t see how I can remove the heater as I see no screws! I have attached a pic so you can see the front/heater.

Zombie hunter - a game for long car trips

For as long as I can remember a long road trip with the kids meant playing some games to kill the time. For years we tried spotting special cars, like original beetles or a rare color like yellow. Then came phones and tablets and the kids went silent. We now found a quite entertaining game we call Zombie Hunter.A zombie in this game is a person using a mobile phone.Points we tried to keep simple in the beginning but now that little ones are getting batter at math we advanced. Here is a little points list:1 For every pedestrian on the phone or a passenger in a car.2 If said pedestrian ran into something or had a fall because of the phone use.5 For someone on a bike using the phone.10 points for a driver using the phone.15 points for a policeman using the phone while driving.Half an hour stuck in city traffic can get you well over 100 points even with 4 people playing LOLMy favourite areas to make quick points:Stops at the traffic lights - always some good points to make.Stopping somewhere near a drive through and you are certain to get 30 or so points if you are quick. If the kids are still little and you go often to playgrounds there is another nice game.I call it Lost Child.1 point for every parent who obviously lost sight of their kid(s).2 points for every parent missing to realise their kid(s) is about to have an accident of fall.3 points for every parent just sitting there and staring at a screen instead of interacting with thier kids.5 points for every parent running around in panic trying to find the missing kid(s).An additional point for every kid you can collect and keep out of harm until the parents notice they are gone.Have fun playing but don't become a point yourself...;)

Is your Bottom made out of Iron? Ever taken a Serious motorbike trip? Daytona? Sturgis? The Big Easy?

Ok, a friend (one of our church members) has asked me to come visit. He's got a contract flying Choppers and Cropdusters for the next two months. We used to eat breakfast together about three times a week when he was in town, and he said if I'll ride up there, he's buying. Problem is, he's 500 miles away. I can't afford to drive the Tahoe, and I don't trust my crackerbox (18 year old Mazda). I think I'm going to take the Goldwing. I've never really ridden more than about 200 miles in a day, but I'll only have about 3 days to make this voyage (1000 miles round trip). What do you think? Is it do-able for a sleep deprived, rapidly-aging, and slightly-overweight desk-jockey?

Help making laser trip wire with LED counter

I have seen a few different laser trip wire instructables here, but they are usually for triggering a nerf device or other projectiles. I am interested in a laser trip wire that would count objects as the laser beam was broken, and display the count on an LED screen. I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to create an instructable for this. This has real world applications, such as counting cases moving along a conveyor line. I would like to use an arduino with a shield for this, and be able to plug it into an outlet. I am a complete Noob when it comes to arduinos. This is a project that I would like to get my feet wet with. I learn best by working on something that interest me. I know it isn't as much fun as a nerf Gatling gun, but it would get plenty of use every day.

Self-Contained Laser Trip (All in one unit)

Hey y’all, I have been searching for a way to create a laser trip wire that doesn’t involve two units that line up to have the beam broken. Is there a way to emit a laser that triggers LEDs or buzzers just when the laser is broken, all coming from one unit? I’ve read about the LED/IR type projections and that’s the closest I’ve found. Any help is welcome. Thanks!
