A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah!

Deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean, forgotten for the best part of a century, lies a tunnel linking London and New York.It was built on the whim of a Victorian inventor with the aim of linking two great cities and developing the kind of friendship that still exists today. But bad fortune befell the venture - and the tunnel lay idle ever after.Until today, that is.One end of the "tunnel" emerges next to Tower Bridge on the banks of the Thames in London - the other is next to Brooklyn Bridge on the banks of New York's East River. It looks like something HG Wells might have imagined. Each end has a giant telescope-like construction which appears to punch its way out of the earth. There are dials, and levers, and thermometer gauges on the side of the 20m long brass and wood construction.Peer into it and you can see people on the other side of the Atlantic.Wave at them, they wave back at you.Web-cam it ain't, but the Telectroscope is fascinating. I hope it's stays operational for quite some time.Telectroscope websiteDaily Mail articleBBC StoryBBC Video

The Greenwich Foot-Tunnel

You might not know it, and you may never have walked through it (I have), but you may well have seen it. The Greenwich Foot Tunnel opened in 1902 and runs under the River Thames, it's a popular spot for music-video. As such, I'm offering patches to the first 5 people to post a video-link featuring the tunnel. Denying you one, here's an example 3:20-30 L

Water Tunnel Testing

So, my measurements professor got us permission to fill and fire up the water tunnel in the measurements lab.For those that don't know, a water tunnel (like the one below), pumps water from one end of a tank to another. The water goes through a conditioning filter (to make the flow nice and even), and then it passes through a tunnel (that blueish area in the picture). You can then add dye or solids to the water to see how a fluid flows over the object. We're allowed to bring in one item (per person) to put through the tunnel. The tunnel is a little more than a foot wide. What would you like to see in there? After the lab, I'll post up pictures (and possibly video) :)Keep in mind that the object should be heavier than water (e.g. no balloons :P). See the photo results here!

How do you build a Box Fan Wind Tunnel?

I have a Science Experiment that I am running that requires I test the aerodynamics of several objects using a wind tunnel. I do not have access to a wind tunnel or wind tunnel testing software. But I have a multimeter, a box fan, and lots of cardboard. Does any one out there know how to build a box fan wind tunnel? Help me please!!!

DIY scanning tunnelling microscope

I caught this on the MAKE blog; the full article is at ChemHacker. Sacha De'Angeli has announced the release of "version 0.1" (proof of concept) for a do-it-yourself scanning tunnelling microscope. If you already know what an STM is, my work here is done. For the rest of you, a scanning tunnelling microscope moves a very fine ("single atom sharp") tip across a surface.Electrons can jump between the surface and tip, leading to a varying electric current which can be amplified and measured. How well the electrons can jump depends exponentially on the width of the gap. Near an atom is closer than between atoms, so by moving the tip in very small (nanometer) increments, you can image the atomic structure of the surface. With a less sharp tip, or coarser position control, you can still image surface structure, steps, defects, etc. UPDATE: Instructables user Fabio M had posted a different STM project last December.

Water Tunnel Testing (photos)

I'm starting a new topic so I can edit it later with more content.I went with some friends to a different lab section that was also playing with the tunnel (my official turn is on Friday).Things put in:1. PVC tube -- to show detachment of a cylinder2. Golf Ball -- to show how dimples create turbulence and keep flow attached longer3. Tennis Ball -- to show how fuzz acts almost like golf ball dimples4. Porsche 9115. Atlantis Space Shuttle6. Porsche 911-turbo (or possibly a 935 or 993 -- can't remember)7. Chain Mail Cube -- wtf? why did someone make that?8. Surf Board Fin9. Optimus Prime10. Unknown Porsche (I just can't remember what it was)11. Batting Cage BallThe pump was set to 3.55 inches per second. So for a 1/64 scale model (for the cars) - that's just under 13mph equivalence (in water). My camera had a low battery -- so the shutter was slower than normal. I'll get fresh batteries and a tripod on Friday I'll have some better pictures (hopefully). As for what I'm bringing in... Still don't know -- but I think I am going to do a comparison of apples and oranges :PVideos of the 911, 911turbo, unknown porsche and of the overall tunnel in operation ;)Update November 3rdItems Tested:1. Plastic Cone (with hole in top)2. Apple3. Eyeglass Case4. Obligatory Altoids Tin5. Plastic Water Bottle6. Highlighter Cap7. Reverse Gear from a manual gearbox (Nissan)8. Pen Cap thing9. Rubber Duck10. Nerf Dart (velcro top)11. Batman Shield (this was really cool)12. Welded Plate13. Golf Ball14. Guitar Bar15. Wing FoilAgain, it was set to 3.55 inches per second. I couldn't find an orange on campus (weird considering I'm in central Florida :P). So I'd say an orange is kinda like a golf ball :PThe Bat Shield video is very cool - if you watch just one of them, make it the bat shield ;)

How do I build an underground room? Answered

OK, I have had this in my head for some time.  How do I build an underground room about 10'x10'?  The area I would like to build it in is in the back woods, no houses or roads for about a mile, I hit water when I dig 15" down and there are power lines in the area.  Another question is do I have to have a special permit or something to do this on when its my land?  And what about a tunnel leading to other rooms?  Any advise will help.

Where can I get large ( diamter larger than 3 ft.) plastic tubing for a child's diy inside gym/playground.?

I want to make a Super Mario Bros themed inside playground for my kids.  I'm basically wanting to construct some type of tubing to make a "warp pipe" tunnel large enough for them to crawl in and out and create a little wooden fort that's painted to look like a castle from the video game that would connect to these hypothetical warp pipes I want to create. I need whatever I am working with to be safe and smooth, non toxic, strong enough to support two kids btwn the ages of 2 and 4 years old & 25 to 35 lbs, and durable yet not so heavy & dense that it would cause injury to my kids if they bumped their heads. I've briefly looked at PVC piping and concrete forms and am a little unsure; would either or both of theses products be suitable for my idea (and do they even come that large)?  Or does anyone else have some suggestions?   Thank you for your time and any responses.

ISO 4in diam clear tube 3-4ft in length for sm pet slide

Hello, I was watching a video where someone was using a mailing tube a hedgehog slide. I wanted to do the same with our heggie as he loves to burrow and will dive off any ledge he can find if we don't watch him. I think the one she used was 3in, but our heggie needs a 4in round and since here is a bit rounder; it needs to be about 3-4ft as well, though we could cut it down. I would like to find an alternative that is clear or semi-clear as it would be nice to be able to see him in the tube as he slides. It also needs to be fairly inexpensive. For anyone interested, our heggies name happens to be Burrow as well. Maybe a fairy whispered it my ear because we choose the name when he was no larger than a large spiky button and it was 6 weeks before we could bring him home. He has wobbly hedgehog syndrome and we really want him to have some fun.  Thanks for any help, Liocorno

How well will an RC radio signal transmit through an underground tunnel?

I want to take one of those overbuilt monster truck RC cars from WalMart and stick a camera and a bunch of lights on it, then drive it down drainage tunnels to see where they go. Why? I'm nuts, that's why. My question is this: how will being in an underground tunnel effect the RC transmission? In a cement tunnel it seems to me that it would have increased range because the signal would bounce down the tube without getting lost in the air or degraded by other signals, resulting in improved signal range. Is this hypothesis true? I would be thrilled if I could get 100 feet of signal range in a tunnel. Any ideas?

Bug in search results which include forum topics

When an Instructables search includes forum topics or comments from forum topics in the results, each of those items has an error associated with it.  Instructables which are search results have a trailer line "by in : ", where each of the keyword items is an appropriate hyperlink. For example, searching for wind tunnel includes   VAWT Lenz type. Stage 1. Converting wind power to rotary motion. Jul 9, 2010 ... This VAWT takes advantage of a natural wind tunnel affect I get between 2 of my sheds. The unit has to be free standing so it can be moved ... by Dr Qui in workshop: energy But the same search also has the following: Wind energy to light up a car top sign? I was thinking that it might be a good idea to use the wind from the car ... that said if the sign is hollow you could make a wind tunnel ... Need help with LED lights

Hey, I'm making an infinity tunnel/mirror based off an instructable on this site. https://www.instructables.com/id/cool-DIY-infinite-LED-tunnel/?&sort;=NEWEST&limit;=40 But the instructions are crystal clear and I'm running into a few road blocks. What kind of LED should I buy? They all have to be the same voltage correct? Does it matter if I connect it to a battery pack or the wall? What kind of battery should I use? Basically I know nothing about electronics and I don't want to create a fire hazard. Any help is appreciated.

after school program help

I am hopefully going to be designing an after school program for the spring semester. the age group is potentially 5- 11. but could be, if i so choose, only 9-11. I am trying to create a program that is exciting, fun, educational and of course, relatively cheap. The first idea i have is to build a model wind tunnel, then have the students design and build pinewood racers (with assistance of course), then we can test the drag in the wind tunnel and make adjustments, then race them. Giving the students the oppertunity to learn a little about wood working and also aerodynamics. I am also looking for suggestions for other projects that would meet the criteria of fun, educational and inexpensive. so if anyone has any ideas at all please feel free to share them. also if anyone is intereted in persuing the above project i am happy to supply links, as they are all ideas i have stolen. thank you Alec

High Tech Microscopy on a Very Tight Budget

Among microscopy amateurs there is a long established tradition of grinding lenses and making their own microscopes. ( Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, who is known as the "Father of Microbiology", was a linen-draper by trade with no formal scientific education, yet his skill at making microscopes and his observations won him international recognition.)  When it comes to non optical microscopy (electron and scanning probe) the idea of making your own microscope at home is more intimidating. Mostly because of the cost and difficulty of getting parts you'll need.  But it seems that this man, John D. Alexander from Gilbert, AZ, found a clever way to build a scanning tunneling microscope using cheap and commonly available parts.   Have a look at his site www.geocities.com/spm_stm/Project.html  Very interesting. If someone of you will try to build his own microscope, let us know.

Partial solution to trash in water? Maybe.

Hey everyone, I had a couple of ideas for getting trash out of our storm drains/oceans/streams/rivers, the first one, this one has a couple of flaws: This is a very basic idea to skimming trash off the surface of water, a net. Preferably one with small holes to limit the amount of trash flowing out of it with the water. BUT, fatal flaw: It can also catch wildlife in it, and I'm still trying to figure out how to work around this. Any suggestions? Second, a filter of sorts for storm drains/streams: Imagine a metal mesh wedge, kind of like a snowplow wedge, that would go in front of drains and such (I'm thinking more for the type of streams and drains that have those big tunnels going under roads and sidewalks and emerge on the other side). The wedge could allow water to flow through, but direct trash off to the sides to collection tanks. I'll try to illustrate it below.                       - - - - - - - - <0 (the lines would be the stream, then the wedge, then the drain/tunnel opening. I couldn't do the tanks...) I'm eager for any suggestions/tips, improvements, and thoughts on these!

My second trip to NRPH

So these are just a few photos from my trip to Northville Regional Psychiatric Hospital. This time i went on a bad day for this as it was raining for a good part of the day and was able to go into the wards. But we had to leave as it sounded as if people were walking around....so enjoy the photos the next time i go i might go into the tunnels and should have a better camera right now im just using my phone for these.

Minecraft

How many of you Instructatarians play Minecraft? For those of you who don't, Minecraft.net. Its a sandbox game where you can create and destroy blocks to build structures and dig tunnels in either a vast single player world or collaborate in one of many public and private Minecraft servers with players around the world. Kind of like Legos, but as a game. For those of you who do, how many would like a private Instructables server? I've been thinking of setting one up.

How to flush out a groundhog

Alright I have a real problem.A whole community of groundhogs has just made its home in my dams retaining wall. I have counted around five separate holes in the wall and have tried to smoke them out with around 5 separate smoke grenades, but apparently the tunnel system is much like the Viet Cong and are just to vast. I need to nail these rodents ASAP before they break through. Any help would be great thanks.

DIY Schematic with instructions for pest control

Would it be possible to get a schematic and instructions to build a dog / cat/ rabbit and ground squirrel repeller ? One with a volume adjust would be nice, so they can go anywhere outside my yard. I do have outside AC plugs... However, a battery powered with AC adapter would be ideal !! ?Here in Arizona, I have numerous problems with these pests. They eat my fruit and vegetable plants, tear up my yard, and tunnel in areas they shouldn't, like under the house foundation.Help anyone ???

where to find thin wall plastic tube?

Hi, I'm building a wind tunnel, and want to achieve a more laminar flow. I've tried drinking straws but they seem to stop the air flow too much. So I made a much larger bore honeycomb with toilet roll tubes. That worked a lot better, so now I'm after something a little better looking. Does anyone have any ideas for where to source a few meters of thin wall plastic tubing? About 25mm -> 35mm diameter. Transparent would be ideal. Thanks!

HELLO, I NEED TO MAKE AN INDOOR SKYDIVING EQUIPMENT?

THE POWER OF THE ELECTRIC MOTOR AND THE PROP WOULD POSE AS PROBLEMS? I KNOW THIS WOULD MAKE ONE'S EYEBROWS TO RISE BUT I THINK IF THEY CAN DO IT, WE COULD. IT IS JUST A MATTER OF PRIMING UP THE PROPS TO PRODUCE A WIND FORCE STRONG ENOUGH TO BLOW ONES BODY IN MIDAIR. i KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THEY HAVE DONE THIS AND I SHOULD JUST BUY MY OWN, ITS NOT THAT I COULD AFFORD IT, I JUST FEEL I COULD REDUCE THE PRICE BY MAKING MY OWN. ANYONE.?

Easy Computer Mouse Modification / Repair

The first time I did this modification was about 10 years ago, and this is my second attempt. Both times it was done as a repair and not strictly as a modification. There are actually many advantages to a newly "rewired" mouse such as the mouse button being easier and more convenient to press.  (possibly an inexpensive and simple method to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome?) Anyway, the modification is located on one of my website pages: http://www.1728.org/mousemod.htm I've seen a lot of mouse modifications on the Internet and I doubt I was the first one to think of this. **************************************************************************** Edited to Add I finally uploaded a picture to this posting.

Anyone use a Car air filter for home use?

Hello all~! An Idea just flew in my mind! Has anyone used or thought of using a Car air filter for home use? my primitive plan says a Car filter (My car's looks like a tunnel/Chimney) with a high CFM computer Fan mounted on top. The fan would be driven on 12v Adapter (or 9v for silence and life) and would suck air through the filter. The dust would then stick to the outside surfaces of the filter, which can be brushed off / Vacumed later. Any Pros/ Cons/ Ideas? Jump in! People!

What is the current on my foam cutter? Should I be worried?

I built the 5 min. foam factory, but instead of a model train transformer ($45 for the cheapest one they had) I used a regular 12 volt transformer and a rectifier bridge (I had to borrow it from my infinite LED tunnel :'( ) Now when I went to buy a variable resistor/potentiometer for the thing my local electronics shop guy said that the 12 volt transformer put out too much current for the ones he had. Now this has me worried. How much current is currently going through this thing? Should I be worried?

What's the most simplified way to light up an XBOX 360 once you have a window installed?

I have 2 XBOX 360's that I'm trying to mod myself.  One, with blue lights and one with red lights.  I already have the Talismoon fans and the Talismoon wind tunnel.  I just need to know if there is  anything else that I can easily wire up that would brighten up the case.  I have a soldering iron but that's hard for me.  I've already ruined 2 controllers.  I need more practice.  I can paint controllers and cases pretty good but the electronic part is what's hard for me.  Thanks for any help.
