Ubuntu

Alright, I really don't like vista (big surprise). Anyway, I'm not great with computers, decent, I can hold my own when working with them, but I'm no genius. And I have been wondering about Ubuntu for a while now and I was wondering if I could/should change to ubuntu from vista. What are the advantages really? And would I be able to abandon and come back to Vista if I changed my mind, I have Windows Vista Home Premium, it came pre installed, so I do not have a disk. And "dual booting", I've heard about from friends but don't really understand/don't know how, if possible. I think thats all. I'll list all my q's if it helps. And also would programs installed on vista (games and such) be able to installed? And would my wireless internet get messed up? -Should I? -Could I? -Advantages? -Disadvantages? -Would I be able to come back to Vista? -Dual booting??? P.S. why does my cursor not blink when I type on instructables? It's bothering me...

Ubuntu stuck at partitioning?

I have a computer running Windows xp, and I am trying to install Ubuntu Linux on it. I have already tried with an official 9.10 CD, and now am trying with a 10.10 CD I made myself. All this I have done with both 9.10 and 10.10: I boot from the CD, and that works fine, but when I get to the partitioner, my Hard drive doesn't show up. Any tips? Oh, and if you have any questions about the specs on my pc, just ask.

Linux, ubuntu, and the like

Ok, so I'm tired of my windows system. It is starting to get boring to look at AND VERY VERY CLUTTERED. I would like to switch to ubuntu, but I'm not sure if it will play my windows games that have a lot of code and/or are graphically intensive. I know it has dual boot, and the other thing, but idk if it will play AOE3, Risk, Itunes, Windows Media player, or any of the windows programs. One of the reasons I would like to switch to ubuntu is because they have a download just for media and music production, and me being a wanna be music superstar, that is what I want and/or need right now.

ubuntu WiFi problems?

Recently after replacing the router in the house, my main ubuntu machine wifi has become extremely slow and unreliable. The culprit appears to be the speed at which the connection get set at 15mb/s or 1mb/s. The Belkin N300 USB WiFi card is capable of 150mb/s, but for some reason it only operates at really nice blazing speeds for a few seconds to minutes after connecting, showing speeds up to 10Gbit/sec transient when first connecting, and the average internet speeds of ~5-10mb/s, but then instantly dropping down into the k bit/s range in the system monitor. * A wired connection is not an option * I have tried "sudo iwconfig wlan1 rate 150"  and "sudo iwconfig wlan1 bit 150" Seems to do nothing. * I have also tried "sudo iw wlan1 set bitrates legacy-2.4 9" This seems to change the connection bitrate, but has no permanent effects, and absolutely no noticeable effects on the actual transfer speeds. * I have tried installing device drivers using windows drivers on the disc, and using "windows wireless drivers" application in linux, though it seemed to have no effect. (I don't think ubuntu is even using those drivers!) At this point I am at a complete loss as to what the problem is. I know that this wireless chip works fine in windows. Any ideas, I am not an expert at this stuff.

Ubuntu crash help, please? Answered

One of the computers in my house was awfully slow, so I installed Ubuntu to speed it up and add stability. (Yes, I could have just added more RAM. But that wouldn't be free, would it?) Being my first time using Ubuntu, I was really surprised at how much I could push the processor without running out of memory. However,I still have one problem, which seems to be occurring every three days, or so. Spontaneously, the screen turns black for a few seconds, then flashes white, vertical, one-inch wide bars at one-second intervals. I've searched everywhere on the internet, yet I don't even know what the white bars mean. Does anyone know what the bars are, maybe what the cause is, and how I might go about fixing it?

How to run Ardublock in Ubuntu

I wanted to ask a question to the community of instructables, hoping to solve my problem: I've been trying for a few days to integrate ardublock with arduino 1.5.8 within Xubuntu. All attempts that I made following the various indications,: http://blog.ardublock.com/engetting-started-ardublockzhardublock/   but I had no success! After changing the destination folder schetch and open the Arduino, again I get the message: "the schetch folder no longer exists. Arduino will use the default location and create a new folder if needed .... at which point Arduino stops talking about himself in the third person. " And finally the arduino opens usual way without integrating into the ardublock folder. I understand that this explanation is a little vague but if anyone from these clues can figure out the error I will be grateful; I remain waiting and ready to give further study to ask them about me. Thank you all for your attention   Torx

Ubuntu 10.10X64 Live on USB Question? Answered

Hi! As a project I decided to install ubuntu 10.10 X64 Live to my flash drive so I can take it around with me anywhere I go. I'm familiar with this operating system, but I don't have it on my home computer, I just wanted to put it on a usb. Anyway, I used Unetbootin (  http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ ) to put it on my drive. It boots fine. The only problem is that I don't think it installed to the usb. Changes that I have made don't seem to stay and drivers that I download don't stay either. Its sort of frustrating becsue while I'm familiar on how to use it, I'm not familiar on getting it to work. Anyway, when I go to the boot menu and select the usb, it gives me several options: Default, Install Ubuntu, Boot from Hard drive, Install Ubuntu (to hard drive), and several others including repair. Now I first was clued into the fact it didn't install because it showed install as an option on this boot menu. The problem is that I want ubuntu on the flash drive, portable, but I don't want it on my machine. The Unetbootin is great, but it doesn't give any instructions for after its installed the software. All it tells you is to reboot.  I would like to keep using this software because I trust it, but I need to get this working.  CAN ANYONE WHO KNOWS UBUNTU OR HAS DONE THIS HELP ME???? Thanks! P.S.  ANY Advice would be helpful here!

Dual-Booting Windows XP and Ubuntu? Answered

I just want to make sure I have this right before I go ahead... So, right now I have two drives. One is partitioned into two, one half is Win Xp(about 60gb), the other completely blank(about 20gb). Then, my slave drive is just for backup. I'm planning on installing Ubuntu onto that blank partition. By doing so, it shouldn't affect any of the files on either of the other drives, right? And when it boots it should boot into Windows as usual unless I directed to go to that partition since the windows drive is the first in the boot order. This, I think, should work without worrying about anything getting wiped right? And this setup won't have the OS's conflicting with each other? Would I have to use GRUB and if so how? Help, is greatly appreciated.

Weekend Builder links not working (Ubuntu)

Consistently, the links in the weekend builder do not work for me. After spinning for a long time at the "app.streamsend.com" referral counter, the page times out. To visit the projects featured in the email, I have to either search for the project in the main page, or parse out the instructables link from your "streamsend.com" referal counter, both of which are rather annoying. I have tried viewing the links using firefox 3.0.10, Midori (webkit based) and Epiphany (gecko based) in Ubuntu 9.04 with the same results in all browsers, on different machines and networks. streamsend.com seems to be faulty.

I need help with my Ubuntu 11.0.4!!!!

I need help with Ubuntu!!! Whenever I boot into ubuntu, the pc makes strange clicking noises and gives me an error screen that contains things such as "FAT32 PREFIX NOT SET" and then "(hd0,0)". Afterwards it quickly transitions into :"GNU GRUB Version 1.99~rcl-13ubuntu3" with a command line under starting with "grub>_". It then has a paragraph consisting of "Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions." The first time it happened, I re-installed Ubuntu, and it worked for a while. It then happened again, so I re-installed hoping this would be the last time. Now it has happened again and I really don't want to re-install everything again.I am new to Ubuntu, and not as computer-experienced as the true "techies", so I was wondering if anybody could help! Thanks for your time! I tried opening BIOS and restoring the factory defaults, but it had absolutely no effect at all. The computer is an HP Media Center PC m495C (several years old). Again, thank you so much for taking the time to read this! ï

why won't this machine load XP or Ubuntu?

Ok- so- my wife's computer was running slow / would not load programs/ acting generally funky.  I couldn't even run a virus scan- I pulled the hard drive and put it in an external case and reformatted it and reinstalled.  I then tried to reload windows XP pro-  it took LITERALLY  2 days of very slow running to load only part of the install files and then locked up.  I bought a new hard disk , installed and try loading window again- it only took a day to load this time but I can't adjust the video resolution.  I try loading Ubuntu using a live disk and it just won't read- I adjust the BIOS so I can load from a flash drive and it starts to load but takes about an hour to get anywhere and then the screen goes black and I cant get anything to come up.  So far I have tried TWO hard drives , booting from a CD, and booting from a flash drive.  Any one have any ideas about what is going on?

How do you thin client ubuntu?

Well, I have a computer running ubuntu 10.04 that I want to use as a server for a sun ray 1g thin client. If I can get it to work with your help I will get another client. I have a user set up for the thin client named test with the password as test. The thin client is hooked up to my network and has the ip 192.168.1.110 and when I turn it on the little box on the screen says the ip and that it found one server but then it fails and has a yellow message at the bottom that it cant find a server. When I open terminal server client in ubuntu on my server computer and type in the ip address, user name, and password it gets an error. What else do I need? it says domain, client hostname, and protocol file (they are all empty) Do I need to install any other software? Thin client manager gives me nothing since I cant get connected. I do have the thing that starts with like ltps or something like that installed through terminal. If I type in the ip address of the server in it will open up a window with ubuntu in it. I believe it is in a program called xpst or something like that. I dont know exactly but I found it in instructables here.  it also says 27b in the bottom left corner and 100f ofer something that looks like a sideways wifi thing that ubuntu shows.  ok, it looks like the image if you scroll down to 27 on this page but it says 27b instead of 27d http://wikis.sun.com/display/SRSS4dot2/SRSS+Troubleshooting+Icons I I found these websites about it but I would like something easier. http://wiki.sun-rays.org/index.php/SRSS_4.2_on_Ubuntu_9.10_(i386,_amd64) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuOnSunRay

Ubuntu 14.04 / Kubuntu 14.04 graphics issue?

This must be just me, I cannot find any info on this weird problem: After a fresh install of ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my old Compaq Presario C700 (w/ 2GB RAM and a new 120GB xbox HHD (2007 vintage)), every time I open firefox or google chrome, the screen will go completely blank after a few seconds and the only way to make the screen come back on is to close the laptop and open it again. That makes it go into sleep mode then I can wake it up again. However, unity window manager appeared to have crashed and window borders and decorations are gone, along with the sidebar and everything except whatever windows were open at the time. The screen also has redrawing issues (things get drawn but do not refresh and go away, leer around after, say, a windows is closed.), and going into the CLI and running the command "unity" and "compiz" to restart it does not fix it. After updating everything, I still had that issue, so decided that ubuntu+unity wasn't worth messing around with anymore since I thought it was a unity thing not running smoothly on intel GMA (although 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, 13.10, and 14.04 worked perfectly fine previously! I had to reinstall ubuntu because I screwed up all the partitions on the drive when I did a HHD transplant. (200MB for linux, 110GB unallocated space, little bit of swap.)). Anyway I decided to try kubuntu w/ much lighter KDE, and was pleased to find out IT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! X-( since it works perfectly fine w/o firefox running, I tried to disable hardware acceleration, nope, didn't work. I tried to use google chrome, nope. didn't work. All that did work was chromium, but I prefer chrome over chromium for... reasons. Chrome actually was working fine until I changed the theme of it and enabled the  This kind of reminds me of all the issues I had with Nvidia drivers vs linux... I am a bit afraid to screw around with the Xorg stuff, thats how I bricked linux in the long-forgotten past w/ Nvidia graphics. I will do whatever is necessary if anyone has suggestions.

Dual boot

I am looking towards creating a dual boot scenario on my computer (XP, and Ubuntu) and I am in need of a bit of assistance. Some background and foundation: Present OS = XP SP2The main partition is NTFS, however the "backup" partition is FAT(16 or 32, I am not sure)Now, to my main question: I realize I can partition this further so I can have a dual boot situation, but I am worried about losses that may occur. I haven't had much time lately to read up on the process, but I have seen warnings about loss of data files, etc. and my being cautious to a fault, I haven't proceeded any further in my quest. So, what precautions should I take, and what is going to be the process I need to follow to get to where I want to be?
