This must be just me, I cannot find any info on this weird problem: After a fresh install of ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my old Compaq Presario C700 (w/ 2GB RAM and a new 120GB xbox HHD (2007 vintage)), every time I open firefox or google chrome, the screen will go completely blank after a few seconds and the only way to make the screen come back on is to close the laptop and open it again. That makes it go into sleep mode then I can wake it up again. However, unity window manager appeared to have crashed and window borders and decorations are gone, along with the sidebar and everything except whatever windows were open at the time. The screen also has redrawing issues (things get drawn but do not refresh and go away, leer around after, say, a windows is closed.), and going into the CLI and running the command "unity" and "compiz" to restart it does not fix it. After updating everything, I still had that issue, so decided that ubuntu+unity wasn't worth messing around with anymore since I thought it was a unity thing not running smoothly on intel GMA (although 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, 13.10, and 14.04 worked perfectly fine previously! I had to reinstall ubuntu because I screwed up all the partitions on the drive when I did a HHD transplant. (200MB for linux, 110GB unallocated space, little bit of swap.)). Anyway I decided to try kubuntu w/ much lighter KDE, and was pleased to find out IT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! X-( since it works perfectly fine w/o firefox running, I tried to disable hardware acceleration, nope, didn't work. I tried to use google chrome, nope. didn't work. All that did work was chromium, but I prefer chrome over chromium for... reasons. Chrome actually was working fine until I changed the theme of it and enabled the This kind of reminds me of all the issues I had with Nvidia drivers vs linux... I am a bit afraid to screw around with the Xorg stuff, thats how I bricked linux in the long-forgotten past w/ Nvidia graphics. I will do whatever is necessary if anyone has suggestions.
