Urban Pranksters

Urban Prankster is a website edited by Charlie Todd of Improv everywhere fame, and it chronicles all the pranks and shenanigans going on in different cities around the world.Unless you are a stiffly stifferson, you should really enjoy this blog, and, if you are lucky, you can find things going on in your area to take part in.I have done a few Improv Everywhere missions (slow mo home depot, mp3 experiment search for Steve, no shirts Abercrombie & Fitch, and the Best Buy mission (for which I am the youtube video thumbnail)), and can say from first hand experience that these public pranks are a lot of fun and a great way to meet interesting people.Urban Prankster

Urban Agriculture

I'm opening up this topic just as a place for discussion and link-sharing. We already have a bunch of instructables on hydroponics and small-garden farming. Let's see what else people come up with. Urban agriculture is a much less energy-intensive way of producing food, mainly because the product is transported very short distances to its consumers. Here, for example, is a Saskatchewan business that is promoting ways of doing urban agriculture as a profitable business:http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/006935.html

Your urban legends

When I think of urban legends, the Mythbusters come to mind. Perhaps this is because I watch the show almost religiously, or just today's society. Although their methods are often questionable, they have put some definitive legends to the test. However, I often find myself wishing that they would test some less famous and more common everyday topics. For example: Will covering yourself in a fire blanket protect you from an explosion? Will touching an electric fence while wet short out your watch? Your thoughts?

CityWood: Woodworking in Urban Areas

Our idea is to create a woodworking space called CityWood in urban areas where people can come to unleash their creative side. The problem we have identified is that people want to create, but due to the crowded cities in which we live, prohibitively expensive cost of tools, and lack of resources and knowledge urbanites do not have a safe place where they can create. CityWood is a welcoming environment to experienced woodworkers, and beginners who want to learn. We provide you with a high quality space, community, professional grade tools, professional instruction and storage. The ultimate urban downhill board

I was wondering if its possible to mount some mountain board brakes to some mountainboard trucks with normal wheels. Hell, you could even use some randall trucks. The reason I'm bringing this up is that in urban conditions you may have a rally nice hill.... that leads right into an intersection. I would love to add these to my latest bomber. Also, can you mount normal wheels on 15" mountain board trucks?Let me know what you guys think.-Butt

Anti-Graffiti Coatings? Answered

Would any of the resident geniuses here at Instructables have any ideas for keeping graffiti off of my cedar fence? I live in a fairly rough neighborhood in a major urban center, and we exclusively have the bad type of graffiti-- crappy tags from juvenile delinquents delineating their turf. Any ideas on how to combat this problem with a DIY, cost-effective solution? I'm thinking it might just be something that most spraypaint won't stick to, or a surface that will destroy paint pens. Heat-sensing, motion-sensing automatic machine guns are not an option due to the rampant stray population ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqIHlnfGKV0

How do I keep cats and possibly rats from using my first contaner garden (food) for their own litter or home or eating?

I live in Maryland in a truly urban environment, but I would love to have some help setting up my first food container garden. I don't really want to make raised beds because I'm afraid the neighborhood cats and rats will ruin it. I really would love to grow my own culinary herbs, some peppers, onions or garlic, asian veggies maybe some tomatoes and such. Could anyone give me all the details?  Is that even possible without raised beds?I have both a front and back porch and I would love it to be organic if possible . I'm a first time gardener but I've been wanting to do this for years and I really need to get it started soon.

Building a home-training program?

Sup all! I'm really interested in becoming a modern ninja, so I googled it a bit. In order to be an urban ninja, I will have to learn parkour and the highlighted of the traditional 18 ninja skills, others will be useless.(Horsemanship? It's Urban Ninjutu, in a city...) Check wikipedia here for more info. unarmed combat sword techniques stick and staff techniques throwing weapons techniques pyrotechnics and explosives disguise and impersonation stealth and entering methods water training tactics espionage escaping and concealment meteorology geography I need to find a good book/DVD series that will teach me traditional Ninjutsu, thus will teach me all of the listed skills. I want to focus mainly on unarmed combat, followed by stick, staff and sword techniques and weapon throwing. The rest is stealth, to sneak into places without being detected. That should make me a basic ninja. Finally, after I'll know these, I will study the less important skills - the italic skills.  What I ask for help is, to give me a good DVD or a book that will teach me either parkour or Taijutsu(unarmed combat). These are the things I want the most, explained before. I prefer the course to be free, like an online study course.

"Re-making" Ninjutsu, combining Krav Maga and Wing Chun

Hiya guys! Recently I had to give up studying Ninjutsu, because there were no close Dojos. I decided to study Wing Chun instead, but I was still very sad I won't become an urban ninja. Later on, I watched some material art TV shows - I then heard about Krav Maga. It's an israeli martial art that focuses on self-defense. I don't want to give up Wing Chun for it, and nor it for Wing Chun. Now here comes the interesting stuff - I came up with a great idea. Ninjas were basically assassins, but that's not what I wanted to be. I wanted a lifestyle. If I will study parkour, I will be able to run jump and hop, like ninjas did. If I will study Wing Chun, I will be an expert an unarmed combat. Krav Maga will teach me weapon stuff - defending attacks, disarming, and fighting with them. All left is to be sneaky, and here I am - a whole new modern ninja-like life style, designed for life in the city! My question is, will I be able to learn Wing Chun and parkour at the same time, and as soon as I'll reach Wing Chun Mastery I'll start with Krav Maga. I'm not sure if I'll ever make it to master 2 martial arts, but the ninjas mastered fighting with almost any weapon, so I guess it's possible. Your opinion?

SciFi Essay Topics - Any Ideas?

For school, I have to write a 6-8 page essay, double spaced, about a chose topic. My teacher said we could pick our own, but she (a) has to approve of it, and (b) it has to be mysterious/unsolved/SciFi/urban legend/consipracy theory. Also, any suspicious crimes, like that concerning Lizzie Borden, are also accepted. My friend is writing of the Chupacabra. Does anyone have any ideas on some good topics, that I won't be straining to find info to write about, i.e., a topic with a ton of info, so much so that I have to condense it? I love the genre that my teacher gave, conspiracy theories, SciFi, and urban legends are my thing. I just can't think of any that would be worth writing so much about. Thanks, I appreciate it!

UK: Boycott Marks & Spencer's

Heads up -- Marks & Spencer's in the UK actually DYES their (perfectly good if past-due) food BLUE before tossing it out, intendending to deter or prevent urban recyclers and others who think waste is immoral, from scavenging their dumpsters. Reportedly they also slash the soles of shoes that get tossed so that they can't be reused. It makes NO difference to M&S, yet company policy is to ruin the goods. Imagine stomping on a bunch of bananas you couldn't sell at the end of the day, rather than giving them to a hungry person. If waste bothers you, consider thinking twice before having dealings with Mark's and Spencer's.

Help With Senior Project; Building a MOUT Facility.

Even though it is a few years down the road (two, to be precise), I would like to begin this ambitious project sooner rather than later. I plan to build an Airsoft/ Paintball MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) facility, that is, a small scale town to do battle in. An example would be the Jericho facility found via Google search. It is my hope to build this (mine, not Jericho) facility and make a profit from it, possibly turn it into a business. I know this is a major project, which is why I am asking for any advice you can give. Is there any way I can obtain cheap materials? Have any hints on buying or (hopefully) obtaining free land? Any advice at all will be appreciated.

Interactive robot art installation on the streets of NYC

This is so intriguing to me. A NYC based artist, Kacie Kinzer, did a very interesting social experiment. She wondered if a human-like creature could traverse the sidewalks of New York City, and perhaps provide insight into human interaction and urban connectivity. So she built robots. Naturally. The artist built small robots (which were rather errily similar looking to our robot!), attached a white flag to the top stating the its destination, and let them loose. The results were surprising - not a single robot was crushed, chomped, stolen, lost or broken. All the "tweenbots", as their creator dubbed them, safely reached their destinations with the help of kindhearted citygoers.Link

Please looking for recommend on the best bike light DIY on Instructables!

Hello, Subject pretty much says all. I'm getting dizzy going through all the bike lighting projects here on Instructables :) Could anyone recommend a good setup that is : 1) Relatively low cost 2) Easy to do 3) Bright 4) Uses standard AAA or AA type batteries (already have these and great charger) 5) Possibly shared system for headlight and flashing tail light This is on a newer urban type bike, so I'd like something I can tie down pretty well. Been using the old hose clamp and 1 LED flashlight for a few years. It's not very good. Thanks for any pointers!
