Can you change your user name? If you can, how???

When we had an Orangeboard, I used to leave messages on a spammer's Orangbeboard, and then report them so the staff could see. Now I can't do that. On YouTube, under the about page, I can report the user, but now, I can't do that. Example, on the right part of the screen: https://www.youtube.com/user/Matthiaswandel/about Something like this: *clicks* Choose between the following options: Spamming/Unwanted advertising Inappropriate profile picture/comments/etc... ... *clicks* Thank you! The Instructables staff will review this ASAP!

As someone who focuses on contests here on Instructables I find that it helps to try and enter other contests on other sites as well to get a feel for how it is to be on the other side. It's fun to have a new challenge and it's even paid off in unexpected ways. So far I've won a gift certificate to Home Depot, a laptop, and a Kodak video camera. Well, I entered another contest on YouTube recently that Olympus was sponsoring. I didn't think I'd win this one, but I hadn't entered a contest in a while so I made a video. I had more fun playing with some motion graphics than coming up with some compelling story to win it and the results showed it. But, it's always worth trying, right? So then I submitted my video into the site only to find out that the only way that I could become a semi-finalist was to be in the top 20 in terms of "likes" my video received. I was urged to promote via twitter and facebook and any other method possible. I thought about the merits of spamming everyone I know and promptly forgot about the contest. Screw it, it wasn't worth it. Now, I understand why this would be a filter for semi-finalists. YouTube contests can get a ton of entries and this helps narrow the field without judges doing any work. It's also a way to promote the contest, and therefore Olympus, to all of the entrant's friends. As an entrant, though, it just stinks. It's a popularity contest only. So that's why our process for choosing finalists combines user votes and staff selections. Half of the finalists are the top user votes and the other half we pick out. Many cool Instructables are submitted that are looked over. We really appreciate the time and effort it takes to make an entry and make every step we can for the contests to be fair for people who enter.

I would like to have a way to block a user, or ban a user from commenting on my instructables. Currently you can send a patch, subscribe to, or send a private message to a user. I would like to see a block tool as well. I have had users that started discussion threads on my instructables that become offtopic, or inappropriate. Flagging the individual comments when they post takes time. If we could block them, then it would stop the commenting all at once. Instructables could even use this filter as a guide to see what users consistently are being blocked, and use it to ban users who are abusive.

We have created this topic for users that cheat, steal, spam, drop viruses, etc. The topic is also for those who are reporting users as bots, or users that are computer generated and carry out tasks that they are (often maliciously) programmed to do. We posted this topic on account of a bot user known as N-Factor. This bot has gone around Instructables in Computer software guides and has dropped the same virus over six times.

Here's an idea I thought of a few weeks ago: Subscribing to Users on Instructables. It will be exactly like YouTube kind of, except you can see the New Instructables/ Slideshows/ Videos any of the users you subscribed to posted.Picture 1) This will be on each users page. Obviously the button will not be like that, it will be like the buttons on Instructables, gray and orange words.Picture 2) Next to Submit, it will say "Subscriptions v" (v is the little arrow), and when you hover over it, it will say New Instructables, New Slideshows, New Videos.Picture 3) Couldn't make my own, so I used YouTube. It won't be like this, but it will be close. See the New Videos/ Instructables/ Slideshows? Click on any, and it shows any of those from any user you are subscribed to. And when you click their user name, it shows all the new stuff from them. See how right now in the picture it just shows a video? Exact same thing will be for the Instructables and Slideshows, so they won't have a video time under it unless it is a video. It shows the date it was posted, the views, the ratings, the usual. If you have any suggestions, please comment! Thanks!NOTE.Click the i in the picture to see it full size.

Hi everyone If you can see the picture you might see my problem, some nut has posted comments on one of my instructables that I use to teach kids at school. I could delete the comment but that may make it look even worse with "the pedo under your bed deleted by authors request". tag under my 'ible Do we really need a member with that user name, and can I get rid of all trace of it from my page?. thanks. I don't know if this is the right area, feel free to move this message if it isn't (if you can do that). Is there some way we can notify users as spam, the way we can with Insturctables and comments? There has been a rash of new users, mostly allegedly 25 years old, posting spam instructables about a couple of DVD ripping/converting programs (Cucusoft and Daniusoft, IIRC). The instructables are written like genuine ones, so at a glance aren't obviously spam, but there have sometimes been duplicate postings of identical 'tibles by the same persontheir comments are pretty much more of the samethe screenshots of the products appear to have been made for other purposes, they haven't used the 'ibles image hint box thingsKarel Jansens has commented on many of them and has also flagged them, but it seems like a bit of a chore commenting all their Instructables and comments when the users are transparently only there for the purpose of spamming.Just from a quick search for "DVD converter": danke, chickchest, seinfelder, Adam Smith, D Eric, floxir and skyocean appear to all be spamming a couple of video format converters.tl;dr- can we report users for the banhammer? Does it count as spam if they post a well-written set of instructions for how to use software that happens to not be free? EDITIt's getting worse, it appears- the spam users are commenting on each other's Instructables to make them look legitimate. Observe this fine specimen:More blah about DVD convertersAll three people who have commented on it (at time of writing) are spam-only members who appear to only exist to talk about this software. The names Daniusoft and afterdawn predictably come up again. Blueberry, tracyjump and CrayDeng can be added to the list above.I'm officially petitioning the site admins to ban all of these users (and preferably their IPs) and remove their Instructables.

When are the powers that be going to finalize the UI? It is a real pain in the tush to come here and find that, yet again, the site has been revamped (how many times in the last couple of months???), leaving the user to grope in the dark just to find that their usual link(s) has (have) disappeared. Take a cue from the big boys and only completely redo the layout (especially navigation) once every year or two, and don't change it completely. Familiarity keeps the customer coming back. Confusion drives them away. That way, people won't get pi**ed off and leave. I mean, how would you feel if you went to drive your car and the control layout changed from the day before. It'd drive you mad, wouldn't it? (See, this is what happens when you have a multitude of volunteers working on the website, no clear direction.) Qa

I have been trying to follow HackerBoxes for some time now (about six months), but it doesn't work. The button gets stuck on "Loading..." as the image shows. I am using Windows 10 and have tried Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Opera with the same results. Is there a fix for this? https://www.instructables.com/member/HackerBoxes/ Thanks, Gary

I know how to flag a comment as 'not nice' or 'inappropriate' and an Instructable as 'inappropriate' or 'spam' ... but how does one flag a user?I've seen a few around that are rude, offensive, racist, sexist, and some times violent. Is there any way to flag a user, and not just his/her individual comments or Instructables?

Hi all, I am following some categories (such as woodworking, home improvements, etc) and users. Is there is a way to browse only through the followed categories/users instead of the homepage featured instructables? Something like a personalised homepage? Sorry if it is already been asked, I searched in the forum but have not found an answer. Thanks in advance!

I have seen many users ask questions like "how do you report a user" and " is there a button for flagging a user after I flag the instructable?" Well I myself already know but that doesn't help the other few million users(wow) that don't know. After this forum post I plan on emailing email@example.com but maybe there is another way. I was thinking that maybe an admin could send a private message to every new and old user saying that the way to report a user is to go to the about page https://www.instructables.com/about/ click on an instructables team member then to send them a private message telling them what the user did, where and why it should be removed( user and/or instructable). It would be even better if the instructables team got together and made groups open to the public again. I did some research and groups used to be easy to get to https://www.instructables.com/edit/new?type=group but if you copy and paste this and try to go to it it won't work. I did some more research and it seems that all the current groups are run by businesses or companies. I just want to make things easier for the average user so that we can make this a more enjoyable site. Also I would like to make a group for younger users so that we can post instructables to each other. It would be cool to have our own circle. -gearup500

Every user has a name on a computer. not the user names that show when youre on the login screen, but other names (usually the same names) that show in command prompt and in my computer and as the computer's users name. Mine is currently set to my mother's name (she registered the computer I guess, or something like that) What I would like to know is, how can I change this name? I'd like it to display my name. If you dont know what Im talking about, open command prompt. it will say something like C:\windows:users:(yourname) the (yourname) is what I want to change.

Hi there, I'm currently using a raspberry pi and LCD as a jukebox with Volumio. I was hoping to tidy it up in a nice enclosure and have found a broken digital tuner which I hope to recycle. The casing does display a warning of electric shocks so thought I'd ask for your advice! I've never really fiddled around with mains powered devices before, so are there any things I should watch out for, safety-wise? I'm only intending to remove the non-working electronics inside, not to make any adjustments to them. Thanks in advance

For me instructables is great because of it's outstanding community. Still, I believe this could be an even better place if we worked closer together. Sure, this can't be forced, but it can be made easier: It would help greatly if a "@user" tag was introduced. It should do two things: Notify the user mentioned, both with an on-page notification (like a PM) as well as through email Produce a clickable link to the user's page The usage cases are plenty. It could be used if... an authors project is based on @user ideas/ project @user has improve upon one's work @user has similar project worth checking out a comment/ forum post is adressed to @user, even though it is not a direct response one knows @user is interested in a instructable/ forum post, but may have missed it Unlike PMs it's a quick and public method to reach out for people. I am very aware that even though this is a "small" idea it may take much effort to develop and integrate throughout the site. Yet I do believe it would be absolutely worth it, as it... motivates authors (it is the greatest feeling to know somebody values the project you've poured all of your heart into) keeps conversations going (I've seen many comments not being responded to just because they haven't used the reply button) brings people with similar ideas and interests together (isn't this what instructables is all about?) It could happen that this will be abused by some people, so "blocking" certain users (to not receive notifications) should be a mandatory function. What do you think about this?

This past Monday, Feburary 12th, I gave a talk titled "Getting to Open-Source Hardware" at Eric Von Hippel's MIT Innovation Lab Meeting at Google. Eric's research focuses on user innovation where he has found that users rather than manufacturers are the actual developers of most new products and services. My talk gave a brief introduction to Instructables and then did a case study on the K'Nex guns as a community that is building open-source hardware in much the same way Zeroprestige was before we started Instructables. Check out the PDF of my slides.

Instructables.com never recognizes me from one visit to the next. Every time I click on a link in an email (unless I already have instructables windows open, and I'm logged in) it doesn't know who I am. Granted, this is bordering on a feature request, but I do think that it should be considered a bug. Since pretty much every other website that isn't a bank account recognizes the user, I would call it a bug unless there is a reason for forcing the user to log in on every visit. Thanks EDIT (Aug 21, 2012): I was using Windows XP with Firefox when I had this problem, and it was consistent for at least a year across different machines. Since posting this question, instructables hasn't asked me to log in again! Maybe it's because I switched to Chrome a couple of days ago, or maybe it was just me. Since this is not a typical, please never mind.

I'm sure that there are a lot of tips&tricks to learn and good utilities / applications to download to enhance the functionality of this little neat device. Does anyone have any tips or pointer to good websites for blackberries except the official blackberry-site and handango?

I can't believe this but the UI of this site continues to be virtually unusable. I am now trying to respond to a comment in one of my instructables and cannot do something as simple as upload an image. Here is the work-flow: Click 'Add Images'->'upload'->'Upload Files'->nothing->'SELECT FILES'->select an image->nothing Next I go to my member profile. There is not a single link there that allows me to upload images or even see what images are in my library. I tried this in Firefox and Safari with the same results. If I add a link to an image uploaded to a file hoster, which is the preferred way to do it, it does not display. How is anybody supposed to add an image to a post or to their own instructable? This is just basic functionality that is taken for granted in any forum. Why is it so difficult (impossible really) to do this in a forum that relies entirely on images to convey information?

Pwn2Own hacker: Apple Safari is 'easy pickings'Charlie Miller, the security researcher who won last year's Pwn2Own hacker contest, is predicting that Apple's Safari browser will be the easiest target this year.In a note posted on the popular Daily Dave mailing list, Miller describes Safari as "easy pickin's" and forecasts that at least four zero-day Safari flaws will be used during the contest at CanSecWest later this month...Safari: hacked by 4 different people. Easy pickin's as usual.Android: hacked by 1 person. Not too tough but no one owns one.IE8, Firefox: Survive unscathed. The bugs to exploit equation is too hard for $5k.iPhone, Symbian: Survive due to non-executable heap.Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Chrome: I don't know enough to say anything intelligent. That said, they're probably hard/obscure and so survive.Last year, Miller exploited a Safari flaw to hijack a fully patched MacBook Pro machine. When the page refreshed, all the boxes were still ticked but my email address had changed to that of another user, towelinmonk (www.instructables.com/member/towelinmonk/ ). I'm not sure if this user is actually now receiving my email alerts, but I thought I'd best report it anyway. I've changed it back now, by the way. Hi everyone, I was wondering if there is a way to find the IP address of a Skype user. Me and a lot of my friends have been getting heaps of people just saying "Hello! Please add me to your contact list" and then if you reply they say "How can you forget me, I want to meet with you, You can view my picture here..". (and that link redirects to a p0*n site, and it is the same link every time) I want to find their IP address to see if the same individual is doing it or if it is multiple people, because this is getting out of hand and just blocking them and reporting them won't help. I'm using a program called "SocketSniff" to find the IP addresses that Skype is using, but I can't seem to find any that are a home computer... They all seem to be servers. Any help finding who is doing this and helping me to find the IP will be greatly appreciated
