Recommendations for online vendors of laser cutting materials?

Our makerspace has a few people who are thinking about placing one or more orders for various materials.  Most will be used on the laser cutter, but not all.  Some of the materials we are looking for are: * Wood: basswood sheets, birch (or similar sturdy) plywood, etc * Acrylics * Leather (vegetable tanned) * Paper: undetermined cardboard and/or cardstock What companies are out there that would have a variety of these materials at good prices?  (For comparison, we have been mostly leaning on the local Michaels - probably one of the most expensive options per-piece.) Thanks!

Little magical dancing toys... how do they work?? Answered

I was in Italy, and I saw a few street vendors selling these little paper figures in the form of Disney cartoon characters that would dance when music was played. They had little strings for legs, and they seemed to hover magically in the air and bounce around in time to the music. When the vendor turned down the volume, the little thing stopped dancing. I looked at the back of it, and all I saw was a little strip that looked magnetic. I am mystified. Does anyone what these things are called or how they work?

Fundemental Logic Freeduino maxserial board dosen't talk to pc

Bought board v015, cable, cd and Breadboard Shield from vendor, at this years Trenton Computer Festival. The vendor also had an optional de-9 to usb converter. Fundamental Logic apparently now only deals with retailers. I did exactly what the instructions "said" to do, no response, never got the board to talk to my p.c. Thought it was a little odd that the same software could be used for rs-232 and usb?  Thanks for your help! Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati

Selling Chai at a Farmers Market

Hi everyone, I have some very good connections to be able to sell at a few local farmers markets, and I had the idea to sell chai here.  I love making and drinking it, but in my city, you can't buy a good cup of chai anywhere.  It's all from a mix which tastes like garbage to me. Since we don't have any chai vendors, I have no idea what would be needed to sell chai on a large scale. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has seen a chai vendor in a market or on the street before, and what their setup is like?  If you had a picture, I would be indebted. Thanks

Digital pictures merged to holographic - like image?

A souvenir vendor took two digital pictures of me and my husband, merged them on a computer, printed the interleaved (?) image, then adhered a piece of acrylic with vertical lines (scratches?) to it.  The result is like a hologram in that you see the two different images as you tilt the (acrylic overlaid) photo. How can I make those?

Will Instructables ever reopen their store?

Has anybody heard whether Instructables is ever planning to reopen their store? Or alternative sources for Instructables gear? When I first joined, they had a store with some cool stuff in it. I'd LOVE to have an official Instructables t-shirt or other swag. Similarly, does anybody know of a 3rd party vendor for Instructables shirts/etc? (For example, there are a few vendors who sell on TeeSpring and eBay who have produced their own AvE t-shirts.) Failing any official or current source, I may just have to make my own. I will definitely publicize it if I do end up doing so.Instructables: Do you have any plans to bring back the store? If not, please consider this as an official request from a huge fan who wishes to support you (and wear your support on his sleeve!) Please, and thank you!(I know that Instructables employees occasionally browse these topics, so I'm hoping for the best here.)

Mounting a blade sign to a tent pole—best methods?

Hi there! I'm doing deco for a large event where there will be a line of vendors in pole tents—the kind you typically see at festivals and fairs, with a white top and stuff. I want to see if it's doable to have blade signs hanging for each vendor, mounted to one of the frame poles of the tent. The signs' construction is variable depending on the mounting methodology, I'm thinking the more lightweight the better. One method I was thinking about would be using zip ties to snugly attach a 90 degree bracket to the tent frame pole and hang the sign from the perpendicular arm, but I don't know if zip ties would be sturdy enough. These don't have to withstand a hurricane but do need to be sturdy enough to withstand the occasional nudge or shake by workers/drunk people. I should also emphasize that the tents will be rented, so no permanent alterations can be done (i.e. no soldering brackets to tent frames...) Thoughts/suggestions/possible drawbacks? THANK YOU

Can someone identify this mystery seedling? Answered

I purchased a couple of rose bushes from a mobile vendor and this small seedling was growing alongside one of the bushes.   At first, I assumed it was a weed, but now I don't think so. Laptop's fingerprint reader, is it possible to reuse it on desktop?

The dead laptop is a HP Pavillion dv3 4010sl, the sensor is a Validity VFS301 (cdk1071_r04_hf) as written on the sensor itself. if i remember correctly it was shown as a USB peripheral. maybe is simple and it need just some resoldering to a USB cable, the problem is that the flat cable connecting it to the motherboard has 6 pins/lines and my knowledge in electronics is quite limited... I've found online what seems like a motherboard schematics (pg.48) and the vendor's sensor's manual. Does Anyone knows if is possible, If yes how?

Where do you buy a cheap bicycle pump? Answered

Please note that most shops here sell "Made in China" products and the only places that you can trust is Ace Hardware, Home Depot ( do they even sell bicycle pumps? ) and some vendors in Manila. Like, seriously, the stuff they sell in Manila is cheap, strong and hard to find. I just need one to power my air cannon and impress my teacher and finally get to get some people to say "WHOAA!!!!". Oh, and it should be Php.150 or lower ( $3 equivalent ).

Cable extension parts

I am working on a project involving a Presario V5000 laptop (well mainly its innards) and would love to find extension cables for some of the components.  For example, the keyboard attaches to the motherboard via a 24 pin flat ribbon-like cable (see example image).  It would be great if I could get a simple extension piece (male to female) to give me any additional length, but I cant seem to find anyone that makes this, or what the techincal name is for that type of cable. (is it even a cable?  Is it a flexible circuitboard?) Anyone aware of a good vendor for hard to find laptop accessories like this??

Are there Dremel attachment(s) meant for removing or shaping solid aluminum? Answered

First, I'll explain the background for my question.  I've been meaning to make a 1000 lumen Maglite (Jayrob from CandlePowerForums conceived the design-look it up, it's awesome).  I can get the heatsink from CPF vendors but they come with a 14.5mm diameter pedestal.  I want to reduce the diameter of the pedestal, ideally to less than 12.5mm in order to use a reflector with a smaller hole. So, which Dremel rotary tool attachment(s) would be appropriate for removing and/or 'shaping' aluminum?  Any ideas, other suggestions, or musings?  Thanks.

Valley View Park Update 3

September 2010 Hello again! The past couple of months have been full of activity. We'll start of by showing you what we saw on our way here. As you can see in pic 1 there's a truck bringing supports of some kind. We were eager to get into the park and see what was going on. While we were walking down the main street we encountered the park inspector who was too busy to answer any questions. As you can see in the second picture the park is still attracting a large crowd. We got to Destruction and guess what we saw. The park has got a construction crew which has brought track and supports! As you can see in pic 3 it looks like Valley View Park is getting it's first coaster! We still do not know what style it will be but we do know that it won't be a wooden one. We asked several park guests what they thought about the new coaster. Here are some of the replies we received. "When I saw the coaster construction I jumped with joy. I've been up to the theme parks in Gold Coast and they were awesome and it's good to know that New South Wales is receiving a good theme park."  Another reply was "Oh boy! Valley View's getting a coaster! I can't wait to see what the park will present to us."  As you can see the guests are eager to see what this will turn into. A you can see in pic 4 we walked past the new food stall and it looks like the vendor is still camera shy. We also found the new Lemonade stall which can be seen in pic 5. This vendor is one of the happiest vendors in the park and he loves cup stacking. His name is Walter Doogle. He make the best lemonade we've ever had. After a ride on Destruction we went to ride the Inversion Spinner. You can see that the queue is still large in pic 6. There have been rumors of a new name to be given to Inversion Spinner. We don't know if the rumors are true but we will definitely investigate the matter. Before leaving we rode on the rest of the rides. We hope that you enjoyed this update of Valley View Park. Stay tuned to see what the park's future will be.

Poor punmanship

I finally got around to really reading through the new ibles blog. Seems you need to log into facebook to post a comment there so hence the posting here as forum topic. I was interested to read about the ice cream gathering, the one promoted with the "nitroglycerine" ice cream. I get to the part where you have the flavors listed. I see: Rum Raisin (aka MADD About You) Now, that is questionable on many levels. If that is the name of the flavor promoted by the ice cream vendor, shame on them. If that is the name of a flavor made up by the blogger, I think they need to have a look at the Be Nice policy. I am not beyond reproach but I do know where not to cross the line.

Where to buy gateway 3ds card (in the US)?

Hi everyone, Sorry if this question has been asked before. I'm sure it has at one point. I'm just about to buy a new 3DS XL for my son, and would love to get a flash cart for it. I looked through the forums and Google but all answers appear dated. I've read that the latest 7.1.0-15 firmware is not supported by any flash card out there, though this was a few months ago. Have things changed? Can I grab the gateway 3ds flashcart, r4i gold 3ds deluxe edition or any other recommendations? I rarely online shop and I am looking to buy from a good vendor. Thanks in advance for any help.

Shade options for a casual, outdoor wedding? Easy to put up/take down? Fairly cheap? Attractive? Impossible?

Hi- I'm trying to figure out our shade options for a casual wedding. I'm hoping to find something fairly cheap, easy to build/take down, and made with reusable materials. Am I dreaming? We have tools and the like, but the solution has to be pretty easy. The event will be stressful enough. There might be a breeze (probably not too heavy) and it has to look okay for the older and more judgemental guests. Preferably it would fit 10 chairs and a couple of small tables. Do you have any good diy links? Vendors for parachute material? Thanks in advance!

Same Same...but Different

Two years ago I spent my fall semester in Vietnam.  While shopping in the markets I often heard the phrase "Same Same...but Different".  This usually referred the knock-off North Face bags (mine fell apart after a month) and designer sunglasses that were, according to the vendors, just as good as the real thing, but a little different.  Although knock-off often has a bad connotation associated with it, it really just means same same but different. What types of things have you encountered in your everyday life that you've thought, "hey this is just like this other thing I tried"? examples... - the perfume I wear smells just like this designer perfume that is 3x more expensive - this bands has a similar sound to this band; they're a little less known but their music is just as awesome! - the city I live is a smaller/larger version than this other city I visited you got the idea

Let's see 'em!Feeling left out? (I am!)Scope the goods at xkcd and Penny Arcade for some clever ways to join the flashmob.I totally need that poster with the map of the internet. I keep getting lost. . .

Great event to show off your cool contraptions!!!

I just thought I would let you know of an event I'm producing in September in Northern Ca. It's going to be quite Edwardian-Futurist in orientation and aesthetic. The event is a human-powered, kinetic, rail-bound sculpture race and so much more. We have negotiated with the city of Santa Rosa, Ca., to close down a number of streets and we will be using the Railroad Square Depot parking lot and railroad tracks for our main event. There will be an array of bicycle based contraptions. Exhibitions of Mechanical and Artistic Wonders by all sorts of notorious tinkers from around the Bay Area. (Cyclecide, Kinetic Steam Works, Bryan Tedrick, Todd Barricklow, Neverwas Haul and more) There will be food booths, amazing craft vendors, all day music, random circus acts, large art installations and sideshow performances as well. www.handcarregatta.com

I'm getting tired of these EasyEDA promotions masquerading as Instructables projects

Seems there are at least 5 Instructables projects recently that are obvious promotions rather than true maker projects.  I'm disturbed by this.  I have no problem with someone recommending a company or product that played a role in a successful Instructable.  I do this all the time.  But if compensation was provided (free PCBs from JLCPCB because they are offering a fee order to anyone that promotes their service, for example) that needs to be clearly stated up front.  That is the ethical thing to do. But, the Instructable needs to be meaningful!  Not, "Here's how to build a 555 timer circuit using JLPCB".  That's completely bogus.  At least TRY to make something useful like a guitar stomp box or a multi-channel audio mixer or an Arduino relay I/O project.  Not some crappy 555 timer circuit, or basic transistor circuit, or a project that has no other redeeming feature than it looks cool when assembled on a JLCPCB circuit board.  Please.  Raise the bar.  If you are going to promote a vendor, don't be lazy, make it an interesting project that is worth my time to read. US Distributor of HB Electronic's LEDs - www.Buy-LEDs-Online.com

I just completed an order for a couple hundred LEDs and batteries that Instructables will be using at SXSW next week to make LED Floaties at PopSci's SXSW afterparty. I ordered them from Buy-LEDs-Online, a US distributor for the well written about HB Electronics. HB Electronics is the recommended vendor of LEDs for LED Throwies and LED Floaties. They ship direct from China, but unfortunately they were out of stock on their throwie packs. Buy-LEDs-Online helped me out by providing everything we needed with great phone and email support and super fast shipping. Robert from Buy-LEDs-Online was not only very helpful, but said that he knew of Instructables and that he uses the site to determine what products he should carry. So, if you're looking for LEDs for your next project, I highly recommend getting them from Buy-LEDs-Online.This is not an advertisement and my opinions are unsolicited. These are the words of [www.instructables.com/member/noahw noahw], LED purchaser, Instructables Content Producer, and debutante extraordinair.

Materials Resources

It'd be helpful if we could create a permanent page to list recommended vendors of common supplies. If you have a favorite website for LEDs, magnets, electronics, or any other parts you could contribute to it. It would be a materials wiki, except one person updates it. An instructable wiki would be helpful as well, but one step at a time, eh?For example:PartsKlockit Clock movements and partspchcables.com One-foot USB extension cables (so common!)Tap Plastics Acrylics. Scrap bins in stores are a great resource.digikey Gobs of electronics.MagnetsK&J; Magnetics Neodymium magnets. Check out their surplus items and eBay auctions for deals.Printing & Cuttingblackbookstencils.com Lasercut stencils. Never used, looks good.[http:///www.calsilkscreen.com calsilkscreen.com] Excellent full-color vinyl stickers with cheap die-cuts (batches of 1,000)psprints.com Stickers are decently priced, but don't have glossy coat that protects them.overnightprints.com Really great full-color, double-sided, round corner business cardsSticker Guy $20 for 250 b/w stickers, but delivery can take up to 8 weeks.Otherocremix.org Great free remixed video game music

Arduino stuck in dfu mode Answered

Hello, I recently updated the firmware on my areduino uno. It is this model, "               Product ID: 0x2ff7               Vendor ID: 0x03eb  (Atmel Corporation)               Version: 0.00               Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec               Location ID: 0xfd140000 / 4               Current Available (mA): 500               Current Required (mA): 100               Extra Operating Current (mA): 0 " I put the arduino in dfu mode, then upgraded it with the firmware in the package contents of the arduino app of a mac. I typed in dfu-programmer AT90USB82 erase and it worked well, Then dfu-programmer AT90USB82 flash /Applications/Arduino.app/Contents/Resources/Java/hardware/arduino/firmwares/atmegaxxu2/UNO-dfu_and_usbserial_combined.hex. That also worked, then finally dfu-programmer AT90USB82 reset. It worked fine last night and this morning, but I found it would not take the code meant for a Leonardo board. I put my board in dfu mode again, then when I went to push the firmware again it would not take it saying it was already installed. I did use the erase command first though. Now my arduino is stuck in dfu mode. Will it just reset itself after a while? I have left it unplugged for an hour and the sketch book still won't show it's port.

4 Days to Order an Open Source CNC Mill Kit at Inventables

Inventables has reached their tipping point by successfully selling 50 Shapeoko CNC Mill Kits.  What does this mean for you? If you purchase a kit in the next four days you are guaranteed a Shapeoko CNC Mill Kit to ship to you in 60 days.  If you wait until next month to order your kit it may not be available!  We will be giving one of these CNC kits away in a July contest so make sure to check back in for more details! About the CNC Mill: These are simple, low cost, open source CNC milling machine kits that can be built in about 3-5 hours. Assembly is required before you can use it. This machine has been under development for the last four years. Edward Ford has been designing, redesigning, and building what he hoped would be a CNC machine that anyone can build. Make Magazine did a nice article on the project. The entire process is built around open source components. From CAD and CAM software to the CNCcontroller, every step has an open source solution. Every nut, every bolt, every belt, is fully documented with part numbers and vendor list. The reason you would consider ordering one of the three kits vs. sourcing all the parts yourself is convenience.

how to build a mount to hold a a roller wringer for drying clothes?

I recently purchased a roller wringer, but having trouble finding a place to secure it to which will remain stable while i crank. The oval washtub i have id small around 30quarts, it fits , i use a piece of wood so the clamps aren't  on the washtub.. however the tub id too light weight and falls over if there is no water or clothe in the tub.i will truy and edit this later with a picture and measurements, but off hand i think between the screw clamps it is 14 inches,  i would really like ti mount in on my bathtub, outer rim which is 6inches.,since i would  have no stability and movements.he vendor i bought ot from said it was normality monuted on a upside down T shaped wood setup, i am not sure what that means. i also  don't want to get a bigger wash basin, since i l live in an apartment and space is really limited/ these are the specs from amazon " Clamps open to 1 3/4". The wringer's metal frame size is 15.5" wide. With the crank handle attached it extends the length to 29". The frame height is 8.5" but extends to 10.25" counting the tension screw knob on top. The metal frame is 2" deep with a 6" drip tray the slides into the frame under the rollers. The usable inside width is 11.25" from one side of the roller to the other. Weighs about 15 lbs assembled."
